when you look at their faces and see just the great joy that they have with this moment, to be able to see the man in charge of the roman catholic church, church that they really want to serve, and also, the way that he is projecting, how he wants them to serve. they are connecting with that i think. >> just beautiful. this is something i imagine a life long memory for these young men not just having him visit but staying with him overnight to have that be his home away from home while in philadelphia. >> jim has terrific insight yesterday about the mattress that he slept on, tell me about that. >> a special mattress donated by macy's, lennox china, that was donated. some of that is going back to the vatican with him. i do not see him eating his meals on lennox china. >> i do not good he seems like a paper plate kind of a guy. >> environmentally friendly good i didn't even think about that. >> well, what we are looking
8:47 am
at right now is inside saint martin's chapel, this is one of the chapels within the seminary. you can see individuals who are in there, they are just waiting to hear and to see the holy father walk in through, the giant doorways, of this chapel. they call it a chapel but to tell you the truth it is a large space. it has a big dome on top of it. if you have ever been driving along city avenue and looked across at saint charles seminary you would have seen at the edge of the lawn that are also near lancaster avenue, you would have seen what really looks like a giant church. once again, within of the bishops or archbishop is here in philadelphia for the world meeting of families. that is what this particular meeting is all about right at this point. the holy father is meeting with the bishops and archbishops around the world who have come to the world meeting of families.
8:48 am
he has a very strong, powerful message that he is going to be giving to them. >> that of course festival of families wonderful way to wrap up celebrations, beautiful voices, andrea bocelli and aretha franklin i wonder if they are able to see that. >> parkway was packed as we left the broadcast center a and that whole center section watching those people that could not get close enough to see from the back of us here right over the stage could see on the big screens, tv and they kept asking when will he be here because he was at independent mall first and then went back to the seminary for a dinner break, if you will and then came back. the interesting thing as we were walking through the city, everyone was happy. the police were happy, the the people were happy, it was just a certain positive energy here in the city that you know, all too often a lot of us get jaded from living in the big city. everyone was calm. it was a joyous move.
8:49 am
>> other thing that was really great and might not have been able to show that to you but 40 jumbotrons have been set up all along the parkway and even along broad street and along 15th street and what i found as we were walking back towards the the hotel is that there was, huge jumbotrons and there was a group of i don't know ten or 12 people sitting on the curb side, enjoying the performances. at that point jackie evanco who has one of the most stunning voices, was perform. she looked stunning in this giant screen. you can see almost a sense of reverence about the experience of being there and just watching it on the big screen. >> i have to tell you, a mile and a half from the parkway trying to get some sleep, dark and early this morning and you can sianni hear everyone, from miles away, the cheering of the crowds. everyone so excited. but this wonderful start that
8:50 am
we were here last night to help celebrate him. >> so what the gentlemen you just saw walking in with the yellow tie is fred stein, he has been master of ceremonies of all of this, very behind the scenes. he has manager each one of these pieces outside of the parkway. he has been intimately involved in every aspect of the development of the last couple of -- the last two days from atlantic aviation when he arrived, until atlantic aviation when he leaves. so you see frank with the ear piece with his ear, gave that nod, that to me would mean that the holy father could be on his way, to greet these seminarians. as we will all be able to experience that and see i think what is going to be a great joy that they have. you can see, they looked nervous. >> i don't know because they realize they are on television. i saw that seminarian wipe his brow or the the big boss is
8:51 am
here we better make sure we don't screw up. >> sometimes you look like that too, right before you go on the air. >> it must be amazing for them, this is a once in a lifetime event, for in the only the city but for them because they get so close to him and again, this is not a pope that would be staying at a four star, five star hotel. he stays with his flock, if you will. >> he stayed with the young men who he wants to inspire and i must make note that archbishop chaput who had lived in the cardinals residence prior to moving, initially, when he got into the cardinal when he became arch bush of of philadelphia, he moved in the archbishop residence. he felt that was not the appropriate place for him because of the financial problems that the archdiocese has been having. he ended up selling that property to st. joes university and then tea side todd move in the seminary
8:52 am
because he wanted to be able to be close to the seminarians to inspire them too. that was his rational. so he, he has an apartment, that is in the seminary and i think they ended up creating a wonderful space for holy father to stay in as well. holy father is the kind of man who wants to be in community. it is in the like he is interested in being isolated. that is why he is not at apostolic palace living there. he wants to live where it is a more simple quarters but the the more important thing is that he wants to be in community with other people. he likes to have people around him. he feels that gives him energy and that gives him what he need in order to do this job. >> isn't he a shy man in nature, that is what we are he's hearing. he is not like a politician would be but he gets energized by people when he sees people otherwise i understand he is
8:53 am
rather quiet. >> he is, indeed, we will to have make note of this because there is noise going on behind us and that is because there is a team of people who are taking down some of those white chairs that had been in place for the festival of families last night, for the big concert and it looks to me that maybe they are making more space for individuals to be able to stand at the mass tonight. so we will see how that ultimately goes and we will bring that mass to you beginning at 4:00 o'clock today. so here we are saint charles borromeo seminary. it was founded in the late 1890's and it has served the archdiocese of philadelphia but also other archdiocese around the the country were being a place where men have studied to become priest. it is extremely well regarded. it becomes very symbolic that the holy father is here to be able to address the seminarians and also more importantly, then that, the
8:54 am
bishops, the archbishops and the cardinals half traveled from around the world to be here in philadelphia. in fact, bishop david o'connell who was with us yesterday in our broadcast, bishop of trenton, diocese of trenton, he is actual a machining those bishops and archbishops this morning because he wanted to have the the opportunity to hear the holy father himself. that is yes is in the live with us on the air this morning. >> road to the priesthood isn't the same for everyone including the pope. he is a jesuit and actually people don't realize to be a jesuit and not be a priest. >> yes. >> but the length of education, and time involved is much more different depending on what order you are with. >> that is in fact, very true. the the holy father has kind of a route to become a jesuit. at one point in the very beginning, he kept it secret for almost four years, and he was even interested in becoming a priest, he didn't
8:55 am
even know then. what i think is beautiful you can take a page back. i talk to some of these young men. i said how did you know you had calling to become a priest. so, you look back in the early story of pope francis and he was on his way to join friend a at a party. the story goes that he was going past a church and he said he felt called from within to go inside the church and he went to confession, sacrament of penance within the doctrine of the catholic church he was drawn into that from what he said and then he said something happened to him when he was in there and he felt that moment that he was there that he became a priest. so within his heart, he had that conversion and then it was his process of ultimately studying and telling his family and then being with his friend. from what i understand he never did go to that party. >> good thing he didn't.
8:56 am
>> yes. >> at one point, he had female friend, some girlfriend, if you will, including i believe there was one notation where he wrote a note to one of these young ladies that if he didn't become a priest he would marry her. >> exactly. >> the the father wasn't that happy about that. he said no, we're not going down this road. >> it was interesting because at one point he told a friend of his, you know, ever since i have met her there is nothing else that has been able to be in my mind. so i think we have all been in that situation of great infatuation and great love and then that love transitions and that is obviously what has happen with the holy father. his love transitioned in to something greater then himself. we find that is where we are today with him traveling the world, being here in philadelphia, the the third of his three cities in the united states and just a fascinating that this is, home the first
8:57 am
time that he has been in the united states. >> when i was doing background research because he is a well educated man. he spent his years in college and things like that. fairly well traveled. you would think that he would have been part of the tour or on his path, before now but that wasn't the case. >> wasn't the case at all. he spent, you know, lot of time in south america. he traveled to rome because he was called there but he in fact said he only went there because he had to. >> corporate office, yeah. >> exactly. >> here he comes. >> here he is, listen to the applause, let's absorb this for a moment here.
8:58 am
8:59 am
this point. we have an opportunity for the holy father to shake hands with a designated seminarian, what a thrill, i wonder if he is speaking in english or spanish. >> the pope does have a translator that helps him along the way for his entire trip, it is the same person from what i understand. >> there he is, right at his right side. let's listen. >> unaudible
9:00 am
>> from what we understand he was greeting the oldest, and youngest seminarian and that makes perfect sense. i'm not sure exactly who he is speaking to right there but you can hear, the the chorus of the organ playing and the great cheers from the people who are gathered at saint martin's chapel. this is a great moment, and also a moment, jim, that is reflective of what happened in 1979 when saint john paul, ii came into philadelphia, the first visit of a holy father that we had in philadelphia. it is exactly what happened then too. it is the same thing. great cheers. >> do you know the number of
