♪ right now at 11:00 o'clock, preparing for the worst. jersey shore communities still recovering from hurricane sandy are now bracing for the possibility of another major storm. hurricane joaquin is colonel moving towards the center islands of the bahamas. storm scan3 shows the hurricane churning in the atlantic and it's getting stronger. joaquin is now a category three hurricane. good evening everyone, i'm ukee washington. >> i'm jessica dean the exact path of the storm is still unclear but meteorologist justin drabick in for kate tonight

you've been getting new information into the wet sent. >> that's right. jessica this storm upgrade to do major hurricane category three. winds at 115 miles per hour. but still little bit early in the game a lot going on in the upper atmosphere to get an exact track on this storm. now here we are just east of the bahamas. you can see good looking hurricane on satellite imagery. the progression again still to the south and west but eventually forecast to move to the north over the next 48 hours or so but back hole, things are drying out now. so that's good news there. at least catch break from the rain a couple of showers earlier. but the front stays stalled offshore and another wave of said dee rain will start to move northward impact our region especially again tomorrow night and certainly on friday. that's not associated with joaquin. here's what we know. expected to intensify a little bit more over the next 24 hours. toe potential us landfall highest risk in the mid atlantic at this point. still uncertainty remains because some of the models take

this storm inland into the mid atlantic but the euro model keeps it out to sea. those two scenarios are possible. here's a look at the model spread right now. from the storm and again you can see the consensus now trying to confine it more into the carolinas that's most likely bet at this point but still some models take it farther to the north an few take it out to sea. little bit uncertainty still to go yet hopefully in the next 24 hours we can nail this down. heavy rain and wind associated with a cold front. sunday and monday we watch joaquin we could be seeing heavy rain but into the weekend from that front we'll see gusty wind at the shore high win watch for friday and saturday. all right. we'll talk about the potential impacts for the delaware valley coming in a few minutes. jessica, back to you. >> justin thank you many down the shore are keeping a close eye on joaquin watching its ever move. "eyewitness news" diana rocco has more from tuckerton, ocean county which got hit hard by hurricane sandy. >> it was like bomb went off

right in this neighborhood. i mean, people lost their homes. >> reporter: images of sandy destruction are still fresh in the minds of all in this tiny tuckerton beach community. homes still remain untouched. abandoned after the storm. or in the process of reconstruction. homeowners say if joaquin moves in, they'll evacuate. >> how can you not? you know, suffer such a devastating below. media saying it could happen again. so yeah it's on their mine. >> shore line communities have already activated emergency management systems warning residents to take all necessary measures. >> we don't know if it's going to be an inch. we don't know if it's going to be 10 feet. we just don't know yet. >> reporter: you don't want to take any chances. >> we can't. because if it hits here monday, sunday, monday it's too late. >> reporter: when hurricane sandy moved in the water came with such force over the bulkhead it knock these five homes clear off their pilings. now nearly though years later, and the rebuilding process still

hasn't started. this is what that same area look like just days after sandy hit. >> i can honestly physical you i probably lost $250,000 in sandy and i don't want -- not only that, there's lot of heart ache. >> maritime owner owner eric hanson has started pulling boats from the water. sandy taught him to never underestimate what can head this way. >> we've been trying to prepare. >> most here have their eye on the forecast and if it looks like joaquin is headed this way it will be full on preparation mode 20 hours day pulling boats boarding homes and evacuating the area. in tuckerton beach, diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news". to the north belmar monmouth county is taking steps to get ready. bulldozer on the beach are creating walls of sand and crews are pumping out a lake to reduce the severity of flooding. >> by lowering this lake we helped mitigate against flooding into all the homes that surround it. so we have hundreds of families

that are right now scared. >> up the shore and asbury park a ditch is being dug on the bitch in long branch a lone bulldozer operator prepared for the possibility of a destructive storm. harvey cedars trash cans were removed from the beach. as we track joaquin's path we have a guide unpreparing for hurricane on our website just go to cbsphilly.com and click on the link right there on our home page. >> in other news tonight and developing right now chopper three over a tanker truck fire in buck county this vehicle caught fire on the lincoln hoy way in middletown township. crews now have it under control. it's not clear what caused the fire or what is inside the tanker. no injuries have been reported. the power is back on tonight in the city of camden. city hall and the county social services building will be open tomorrow. they closed today after an equipment failure this morning at a substation. rutgers camden and the camden county college campus shut down and then resumed classes at noon. it's unclear whether the rain we

had in the overnight hours was in part responsible for the failure. two men are charged with beating and robbing an elderly war hero in west vincent township chester county. "eyewitness news" was zachary hails was brought into custody. authorities say he and joinery's pushed their what into the 81 year old's home on july 29th. authorities also say hails was appliance rei mayor man and had performed work at the home shortly before the robbery. authorities make arrest in a center city arson that damaged a construction site and forced some people into nearby buildings to evacuate. police arrested 52 year old steven pettiway of philadelphia today. he's senhor in surveillance video. authorities say he intentionally set the for on south 13th street september 15th. that building was under construction two adjacent buildings were also damaged. today attorneys delivered their opening statements in the trial of the contractor charged in the deadly center city building collapse.

six people were killed when a building under demolition collapsed on to a salvation army store at 22nd and market in june 2013. griffin campbell faces six counts of third degree murder. prosecutors say campbell was the lead contractor and left a four story brick wall unsupported before it collapsed. pope francis is reflecting on his trip to cuba and the united states as well as his time in philadelphia. the pontiff talked about the trip during his weekly audience at sain saint peters square. francis says his night from havana to washington, d.c. was a symbol look one and spoke of building a bridge between the two countries. pope francis called his visit to philadelphia an opportunity to celebrate the family. he called the covenant between man and woman keep key to the prosperity and sal his car are the for the world. honoring remarkable acts of heroism the national liberty museum recognizing police officers, firefighters and emt's for going above and beyond the call of duty. our natasha brown was at tonight's ceremony where one

come in. not only about the ran we'll get first but then joaquin as well. >> looking a little bit more likely the storm may go into the carolinas but still at this point not a lock. still a couple of scenarios we have to iron out because so much going on in the atmosphere. but potentially impacts from joaquin would be second half of the weekend for the delaware valley until then quiet for now. but we are track something more rain headed our way fort end of the week. let's take you out side right now where we had the showers earlier this evening. last of the cold front that's moving through but now that front is going to stall offshore and bring more rain. so just overcast skies currently as you take a live look at center city. fall weather fans you'll like this forecast for the next few days. we're actually cool the temperatures down. past few days we were up in the 80s. and then now it's 65 at the airport in philadelphia. 53 in point every mount pock know. humidity levels starring to drop. look at that low in and mid 50s to the north and west that. cooler air continues to settle south and east for the neck several days. they're the front lined up offshore. you can see steadier rain

developing across the tidal water of virginia heading north this will impact our region later on thursday and certainly friday. so another round of potentially heavy rainfall. front stays offshore but now we got to deal with the stronger northeast wind, thursday, fry daring saturday, even into sunday watch out along the coast if you're headed to the shore. gust too winds will kick up the surf. potential for coastal flooding and beach erosion. periods of rain for friday it's windy even in the inn land spo spots. saturday i think showers really come to an end early in the morning so saturday afternoon may be okay. just cloudy and windy and cool. then we watch joaquin as the storm potentially tracks northwards towards the mid atlantic. coastal up packets because of the strong winds from the cold front could gust over 50 miles per hour. beach erosion rough surf not a good idea to try to swim in the ocean surf heights up around six to 10 feet. much of thursday at least the first half is dry. just some clouds. it will be breezy some steadier rain starts to move in late thursday night and periods of rain through the day on friday.

some of that could be heavy at advertisements. saturday looking a little bit letter better a lot of these showers start to break up by the early morning hours. here's the latest on joaquin. winds at 115 miles per hour. gusting to 140 so that's category three major hurricane still east of the bahamas moving southwest but eventually start to go lift back northward over the next 24 to 48 hours making landfall somewhere along the carolina coastline sunday night as category two storm. as it tracks inland the storm does dissipate. we would feel the effects if that is the exact track in the form of some more rainfall moving in for the second half of the weekend a lot of players. we have this dip in the jet stream upper level trough that's what's forecast to pick this storm up zen it northward. if the trough misses it the storm stays out to sea which is still possible but it look like the most likely scenario at this point would try to turn it towards the mid atlantic coastline. no matter what happens we're cooling with tropical moisture it will be rainy no matter what. how much rain now through saturday from the front? maybe an inch or two.

more to the south. but if we add the potential effects from joaquin we could be dealing with three, four, maybe 5-inches in some parts of the delaware valley. tonight mostly cloudy maybe a stray shower 58 for the low temperature. tomorrow clouds continue, breezy, rain arrives late. high of only 63 degrees. even cooler on friday with the wind and rain. 58. saturday getting some morning showers i think the afternoon is okay still windy and then of course sunday and monday whatever is left of joaquin dealing with more rain temperatures warm back into the 70s early neck week. >> this is going to be interesting. >> it will be fun.
