i'm meg oliver in for anne-marie green. tomorrow in las vegas, the democratic presidential candidates meet in their first debate and it's shaping up to be a critical contest for hillary clinton who continues to lead, but is losing ground. a just released cbs news poll shows clinton with a 19-point lead over bernie sanders but it's a dramatic drop from august when her lead was 41 percentage points. don championsh is here in new york. >> reporter: the clinton camp is hoping tomorrow night's debate will help jump-start her campaign. this week president obama weighed in on clinton and the race for the white house. new polls show tuesday night's debate could be the most important one of hillary clinton's career. the latest cbs news poll shows only 35% of primary voters view her as honest and trustworthy. during an interview that aired sunday on "60 minutes," president obama weighed in on clinton's ongoing e-mail controversy. >> you know, she made a mistake. she has acknowledged it.

i do think the way it's been ginned up is, in part, because of politic. >> reporter: still, democrats overwhelmingly believe clinton has the best chance of winning the general election next year. >> get out of my way, will you. >> reporter: far more believe vice president joe biden is more honest and trustworthy and when pressed whether he will announce his candidacy, the president said this. >> you know, i'll let joe make that decision. >> reporter: president obama was more candid on donald trump. the latest nbc news poll believes the republican front-runner has strong leadership qualities. >> he knows how to get attention. he's, you know, the classic reality tv character. >> reporter: trump will address undeclared voters in the key state of new hampshire today, along with clinton's biggest challenger bernie sanders. now, the convention that donald trump and bernie sanders will be addressing today is focused on bipartisanship problem solving. >> what did that poll show about

the republican side of the race? >> reporter: the latest cbs news poll shows donald trump still very much in the lead with 27%. he even has more support now than he did back in august when he was polling at 24%. right now, ben carson is still in second with 21%, up from just 6% in august. and jeb bush is polling at 6% right now, down from 13% in august. >> don champ here in new york, thank you. as of now, congressman paul ryan hasn't changed his mind about running for speaker of the house. but ryan reportedly spent the weekend considering a bid to replace john boehner. yesterday, members of the freedom caucus, the group of rebel hardline conservatives that drove boehner out, said they could support ryan. but the caucus wants major changes in how the house works. >> we are much more concerned about reforming the institution. this is not just about who the next speaker is, it's about what is going to change, the business

as usual attitude around that changing that is foremost on our minds and that is what we are focused on. >> reporter: the caucus put together a list of 21 questions for speaker candidates concerning policy and possible reform. back now to president obama's "60 minutes" interview. the president told steve kroft he was skeptical from the start about the failed 5 hundred,000 program to train the moderate opposition in syria. >> reporter: if you were skeptical about the program, why did you go through the program? >> well, because of part of what we have to do here, steve, is try different things because with we also have partners on the ground that are invested and interested in seeing some sort of resolution to this problem. >> reporter: they wanted you to do it? >> well, no, sir that is not what i said. i think it's important for us to make sure that we explore all of the various options. >> over the weekend, russian war planes continued to hit targets in syria.

russian president putin says moscow is working towards a compromise by stabilizing the syrian government. coming up on "cbs this morning," more of president obama's "60 minutes" interview and what he expects in the final year of his presidency. russia says it broke up a plot to carry out a terrorist attack in moscow. an unknown number of people were arrested in a moscow apartment sunday. the russian news area reports an explosive device was found and diffused. it's still unclear who is behind one of the deadliest bombings in turkey's history. thousand dolla thousands gathered yesterday to pay their respects and bury one of the victims. the crowd denounced the government for failing to prevent the attack at a peace rally by pro on kurdish activists on saturday. the bombings in ankara on saturday killed at least 95 people. no one has claimed responsibility. the government says kurdish

rebels or islamic militants are responsible. there has been more israeli/palestinian violence this morning. one say a man attacked a police officer with a knife and shot dead. three palestinians, including a 2-year-old, were killed by israeli forces. four israelis were stabbed during an attack last night. palestinian students clash with israeli police on the west bank yesterday. dozens threw rocks at nearby security forces. there were also demonstrations on the gaza strip. since the trouble began last month, at least 24 palestinians and five israelis have been killed. a police officer in memphis, tennessee, is being mourned today. officer terrance olridge was shot multiple times on sunday when he was off duty in a memphis suburb. he was taken to a hospital where he died. he is the fourth memphis police officer fatally shot in over four years. two of them died in the last two and a half months. >> it wasn't very long.

probably in a close proximity where i'm standing now. said something very similar to what i'm saying here and just doesn't get any easier. >> the male suspect is in custody, but police have not said if he has been charged. allegiant airline plane aborted a takeoff in las vegas. >> no problems here. we are just getting ready for it, but no problems. we are just going to sit here for a second. >> the flight was about to depart sunday for fresno, california, when an engine caught fire while it was still on the ground. the plane had 160 passengers and six crewmembers aboard. there were no injuries. coming up on the "morning news." we will hear from one of the passengers who made it off that jet. ahead on the "cbs morning news," travel headaches. passengers on southwest airlines face huge delays today. later, hospital reunion. train heroes get together as one recovers from a stabbing.

airlines today, be prepared for delays. hundreds of southwest flights were delayed yesterday because of a computer glitch affecting seconds. frustrated southwest passengers were delayed for hours. they haven't told us how long we are going to wait but i don't know if we are going to make our flight. >> nobody is saying anything. that is the problem. not a sign. not a person here or anything. >> southwest isn't sure how long the problem will be -- will take to be resolved. passengers are advised to print boarding passes before coming to the airport and to arrive about two hours early. last week was the best week this year on wall street. the dow gained 613 points. the s&p finished the week 63 points higher. the nasdaq added 122 points. the price of gas continues to drop but the price of crude oil continuous to rise, expect higher prices at the pumps. the average price of a gallon of gas dropped to $2.34.

gas prices have fallen about 52 cents a gallon over the past 17 weeks. the good news the gas prices are low but the bad news the lower prices probably means for cost of living next year for associate security recipients or retired vets. it is tied to inflation being dragged down by the lower gas prices. the official announcement comes thursday and if it's as expected, there is -- the third time in 40 years that has happened. apple's news app has been disabled in china. reportedly by apple. customers in china see a message that the app is unavailable. "the new york times" is reporting apple is just the latest tech company frustrated by china's tough censorship rules. china is apple's largest market in the world by revenue. students at the university of connecticut are trying to make the best of a messy situation. >> union street market! look!
