and an uber attack is caught on video. a driver's cash camera is rolling when his passenger turns violent! good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. thanks for joining us. i'm anne-marie green. russia's top aviation official says the russian airliner that crashed on the psinai peninsula broke apart in mid air but it's too early to know just what happened. the russian jet had taken off from a red sea resort headed for st. petersburg with when it fell out of the sky on saturday and in the air 23 minutes and all 224 people on board were killed. don champion reports. >> reporter: the bodies of victims of the russian metro jet crash in egypt were flown to st. petersburg this morning. russian aviation officials say flight 9268 broke apart 23 minutes into its flight

saturday. at the time, the plane was cruising at 30,000 feet over egypt's sinai peninsula. all 224 people on board were killed. an affiliate of islamic state group claimed responsibility for the crash but, so far, investigators say there is no evidence to support that. they are looking at possible mechanical and structural issues because the plane suffered severe damage in the past. >> it had a tail strike seven years ago and had been repaired. we just don't know if it was i adequate repair. >> reporter: as precaution a growing number of airlines including lufthansa and air france are avoiding the area. >> it is probably prudentents to avoid the area. >> reporter: the head of russian aviation say the debris is spread over six square miles. the plane's black boxes have been recovered but, so far have not been analyzed. russian officials hope to recover the bodies of all the victims the next few days.

the airline that owned the plane that crashed has been ordered to ground and inspect all of the a-321 airbusses in its fleet. >> don champion in new york, thank you. the kansas city royals are the kings of the baseball world this morning. kc wing its first world series since 1985 thanks to another late stunning inning collapse by the new york mets and comes one year after kansas city's own heartbreak losing last year's championship in the seventh game. kenneth craig has our report from new york's citifield. >> reporter: it was an intense couple of hours at citifield but in the end royals fans left here after they got what they came for, a world series win for the first time in quite a while. >> inside corner! the royals 2015 world champions! >> reporter: the kansas city royals defeated the new york mets 7-2 to clench the world series championship at citifield.

a home run by curtis granderson right off the bat gave the mets hope. >> that is in the air to right center. it sounded good. >> reporter: but game five came down to a pitcher's duel. matt harvey against edinson volquez and the two bull pens. >> nasty pitch from volquez. two out. >> reporter: the royals bats came lialive in the top of the ninth and never looked back. >> a gap to right center. >> reporter: a long time coming. kansas city baseball fans have waited 30 years for this moment. >> there some part of me that wants to go back to kansas city, but i'll take it here. >> reporter: a sea of blue and white filled the streets in kansas city to celebrate the royals victory. as for the die-hards there is always next year. >> i think they made some bad decisions in the ninth inning. i don't know. i guess all of the sports commentators will analyze it for months. >> reporter: this was the first world series ever to be played

here at citifield. the last time the royals won was in 1985. kenneth craig, cbs news, queens, new york. >> very excited kansas city fans celebrated the big win. the city will hold a parade for the team tomorrow and we will have more on the world series coming up in sports. the campaigns of frustrated republican presidential candidates are agreeing to a series of demands over upcoming debates. last week's gop debate in colorado moderated by cnbc drew harsh criticism. candidates complained about the format. candidate carly fiorina thought that was a good idea. >> i hope it was a signal, quite honestly, to the liberal media they need to be more deliberate and more balanced and more respectful. >> the commands including mandatory opening and closing statements and an equal number

of questions for the candidates. paul ryan, the newly elected speaker of the house, says he doesn't trust president obama when it comes to immigration reform. ryan says you can forget any comprehensive overhaul of immigration law while mr. obama is still in office. >> i think it would be a ridiculous notion to try and work on an issue like this with the president we simply cannot trust on this issue. he tried to go it alone and the legislative process with his executive orders. >> no november the president issued an executive order that would allowed 5 million immigrants to stay in this country without the threat to be but it was put on hold by courts. fred thompson's unusual career led him from prime time to politics. he was success at both. thompson, the former senator from tennessee, died yesterday following a recurrence of

lymphoma. brian webb reports. >> reporter: fred thompson had a commanding presence. he was 66, had a booming voice and a straightforward southern sensibility. born in alabama, thompson first gained notoriety during the 1972 watergate investigation as legal counsel, he asked the question that led to the disclosure of a taping system inside the white house. those tapes played a pivotal role in the resignation of president richard nixon. >> i'm fred thompson and i want to tell you what i believe right now. >> reporter: thompson won al gore's tennessee senate seat in 1994. he retired when his term expired in january of 2003 and briefly ran for president in 2008 as a republican party candidate but most of america know thompson from his role on tv show "law & order." and "the hunt for red october. >> i imagine you'll tell me what the hubbub is about.

>> reporter: fred was the same man on the floor of the senate, the movie studio, or the town square of his hometown said his family, adding he died peacefully surrounded by his family. fred thompson was 73 years old. brian webb for cbs news. parts of the southeast are bracing for more wet weather today. a slow moving storm will deliver heavy rain to alabama, georgia, and the carolinas before pushing into the mid-atlantic. the region is cleaning up from heavy flooding and tornadoes over the weekend. the severe weather killed six people in water-logged texas. a driver in austin was recording video as his car was swept away. >> so you can see i'm floating down some sort of creek in the middle of this weather. i've called 911. >> carrie packer escaped from his car before it sank. he saved himself by climbing a tree. a u.s. navy crew will try to recover the black box from the

wreckage of the cargo ship el faro. sonar shows what is thought to be the 790-foot ship upright on the ocean floor. el faro disappeared during a hurricane off the bahamas a month ago. all 33 members died. victims of a deadly colorado springs shooting rampage are being remembered. dozens of people gathered sunday night for a candlelight vigil near the shooting scene. a man opened fire with a rifle saturday, killing three people. he died in a gun battle with police. his motive is not clear. north carolina police are searching for the gunman who opened fire on the campus of winston-salem state university. the shooting, early sunday, killed one student and wounded another. several hundred people braved rain for a vigil last night. coming up on the "morning news." possible outbreak at chipotle. people are sickened to e-coli

major airline announces discounted flights and chipotle investigates e. coli square. the stores of the contamination is not known. 22 people have become six from e. coli. 16 in chipotle the past few weeks. eight have been hospitalized. they say who becomes sick and see a doctor. wall street has eyes on jobs report from october on. the stock market finished october with its biggest monthly gain in four years. last week, the dow gained 16 points. the s&p finished higher by four points. the nasdaq was up 22 points for the week. next year, americanaiines is introducing cheap fares to compete with low cost carriers.

city royals fans is over. their team beat the mets in dramatic fashion early this morning to capture the world series for the first time in 30 years! now game five turns sour for new york at the top of the ninth inning. mets ace matt harvey confronted manager terry collins in the dugout demanding to finish the game he started. but after giving up a lead-off walk, harvey surrendered a double and the royals rallied to tie the game. collins said it was his fault. >> i let my heart get in the way of my gut and, you know, i love my players and i trust them. so i said go get 'em out. >> harvey master kansas city for the first eight innings and allowing no runs and striking out nine batters. mets fans hope they will celebrate a world series title next year on the 30th anniversary of their last championship. it was a rough day for new york football fans as well. giants quarterback eli manning

a high school teacher in sacramento, california, faces charges for a violent classroom incident caught on camera. cell phone video shows teacher david fritz wrestling a student to the ground friday. he is wearing a halloween costume. fritz was arrested and charged with willful cruelty toward a child and police say there are signs he was drunk. a shark attack survivor and tampered halloween candy. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the philadelphia enquirer says police are investigating reports of tainted halloween candy. several people reported finding sewing type medles inside wrapped candy bars they got while they were trick or treating. >> we all checked our twix and our skittles and our snickers so

in the debate over gun control, the idea of smart guns keeps coming up. they are firearms that only work when they are fired by their owner. in a report for "60 minutes" last night, lesley stahl took a closer look at the fight over the new technology. >> you have to be careful not to fall into the technology trap. it doesn't solve every problem. it's great. we are not here saying that technology is a bad thing. technology, obviously, improves our life in many ways. i think you have to look at firearms in a slight different way. the they are at the state now that consumes want them and in the united states there is lots of tradition involved with firearms. people like guns of the old west. they like them the way davey crockett used them. they like them the way they were used years ago. >> reporter: that was the case a
