bumper to bumper traffic. it is a familiar site for millions of drivers, every single day, and now, a newly released study shines spotlight on what's to blame, the big bad bottlenecks. good afternoon, i'm erika von tiehl. that new report find one of the top 50 recurring bottlenecks right her in philadelphia. chopper three live right now over the schuylkill expressway, route one, between city avenue and roosevelt boulevard. this one right here, comes in at number 36 on that list.

correspondent kris van cleave joins us from another torrealba just trouble spot, lincoln tunnel connecting new york and new jersey, chris, good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, that's right, lincoln tunnel the worse traffic bottlenecks on the east coast. but philly doesn't get off easy. they have two spots on this top 50 list, you talked about one the other is where 76 and 676 get together. that interchange between downtown and the ben franklin bridge. that can be a nightmare for drivers, as well, and when you total up the amount of lost time, because of this traffic, that works out to about $2.4 billion in lost productivity every year. drivers, it doesn't get worse than this. a 12-mile stretch of red lights, crawling cars, and pure commuter agony. interstate 90 in chicago around o'hare airport is considered the worse traffic bottleneck in the country, resulting in 16.9 million hours of wasted time. that's an estimated

$418 million of lost productivity a year, according to a new report. the reason? pure volume. >> destroyed so many neighborhoods to build it, yet people still can't get anywhere. >> i give myself about an hour and a half to get to work. >> the report identifies the 50 worse bottlenecks in the country, six of the top ten, are in los angeles, the new york city area has nine brutal bottlenecks. the 2.6 miles around the lincoln tunnel, results in 3.4 million hours of driver delay every year. >> bottlenecks getting worse? >> it is getting worse over time. certainly between 1982 and today, there is a lot of stud that's show that traffic that once was just in l.a. is now worse than what la was like back then in dozens every cities around the country. >> while all of the bottlenecks suffer from too much volume, too many causer, causes for the problems vary as do the solutions.

but, in general, the research recommends expanding the roadways, expanding mass transit, and looking at smart technology that can make the corridors more efficient to handle more of the traffic, erika? >> working from home sounds that much better, thanks so much. >> a driver is charged with dui after a fiery crash on i-295 in west depford earlier this morning. police say 26 year old eileen dougherty of boothwyne, pennsylvania was driving northbound in the southbound lanes when her car struck a pick-up truck head-on. the driver of that pick up was able to escape just before it burst into flames. the highway was closed for about three hours during the crash investigation. and, tis the season for holiday travel. getting out of town for thanksgiving, expect increased security presence from law enforce the in the wake of the paris attacks. jan carabeo more from philadelphia international airport. >> 46 million travelers will take to the roads, rales, and airways in the united states

this week. and they'll see extra officers, patrol dogs, security at virtually every transportation center in the country. homeland security secretary, jay johnson, says his agency is ready for anything. >> i always hesitate to rang threats, but the potential copycat, the lone wolf actor is one that we're continually focused on. >> airline passengers can expect slower, longer lines, due to enhanced screenings. tsa says it will handle 25 million passenger this week. >> we're a little bit more aware of the increased security now and that people may be little more nervous, but at the same time, we're still traveling. >> if travelers are nervous, so are the airlines. phony bomb threats redirected three flights last week from the us headed overseas, including a turkish airlines flight to istanbul. in new york city on sunday, police held a hours long active shooter drill in the

city subway system. and for the first time the drill included an attacker in a suicide vest. >> we have now beefed up our resources that we will be in a position to handle a significant number of events going on simultaneously or sequencially. >> department of homeland security says there are no credible threats anywhere in the u.s. >> still, the advice is simple. if you plan on flying, arrive here to philadelphia international airport early, because again, those security lines could be longer, and move even more slowly than usual. at philadelphia international airport, jan carabeo, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". we have some good news if you're driving out of town for thanksgiving. gas prices are falling just in time for the holiday. we found gas going for 2.29 a gallon overnight in old city, prices have fallon by more than a dime in the last two weeks, in the week leading to up thanksgiving year ago, keep this in mine, we are paying about $3 a gallon, so cheaper prices definitely something to be thankful for on thursday. now, if you need to fill up here is what you can expect.

drivers in new jersey are paying average of 1.91 for gallon of regular, delaware costs about 2.08 a gallon. and prices in pennsylvania, about quarter higher, at 2.32 a gallon. schools and subways remain closed in bull jump over fears of imminent paris-style terror attack. authorities arrested more than dozen people overnight in raids, have yet to track down paris attacker. correspondent craig boswell with the latest from washington. >> brussels is on look down, heavily armed soldiers are patrolling the streets, trying to prevent paris-style terror attack in the belgium capitol. many businesses are closed, downtown streets are nearly empty. overnight, security forces carried out more than dozen raids across belgium. at least 21 people were arrested, but the prime suspect in the paris attacks is not one of them. >> it is not among the persons

here, at least the sunshine going on, again, the winds really causing the problems today. and this is some true fall air we're dealing with, some of the coldest we've seen this season, bodies aren't used to it, woke up with temperatures in the 20's, 30's, windchills in the low 20's, right now, though, struggling to get into the low 40's, right now 41 at the airport, trenton, philadelphia, and wilmington, mid 30's, north and west up into the lehigh valley, still stuck in the 20's, in the poconos. some of the suburbs, little chill think hour, quakertown, pottstown, doylestown, all in the upper 30's. that winds continues sustained out of the north west 15, to near 20 miles per hour, so still, some harsh windchills to deal with. this is what it actually feels like. feels like freezing in philadelphia, 26 degrees in allentown, 17, that's what it feels like exposed skin up in the poconos. storm scan3, quiet over the delaware valley. to the north get up to the lehigh valley and poconos, there is some stray flurries flying right now. so you may run into a few flakes this afternoon. overall, cold day today, 45,

the forecasted hi, that will make it the coldest day since april 9th. so certainly the coldest air this fall season. again, not any better down south along the shore points, a loft sunshine, though, temperatures mid 40's, then again some flurries up in the poconos, highs only in the mid 30's. big warm up on the way, though, for the holiday. we will check out those details coming up if a few more minutes, over to you. >> eagles have short week before thursday's thanksgiving day game in detroit. will have to put yesterday's turkey of game behind them. eagles gave up historic and the of rushing yardage yesterday. buccaneers doug martin ran for 235 yards against the birds. rookie quarterback winston, through five touchdown passes. and for good measure the bucks returned an interception for a touchdown. coach chip kelly and wip's angelo cataldi got into it a little bit earlier this morning. >> that doesn't flow, that doesn't work, and that's not what people talk about. i mean, i think that's -- if that's what people want, people want to scream and

but overall, it is just quiet finish to our monday. soap, sunny and cold day today, that's the story. we are setting up for a dry stretch, as well. and then, holiday warm up coming up for thanksgiving. wait until you see the seven day forecast, split week something for everyone going on. today's average high should be 53, not even close it that, we're mid 40's on tuesday, warming up little bit still below average, but then by wednesday back to average, then thursday, friday, we're surging our highs good 10 degrees above average talking about mid 60s, coming up in the forecast, south jersey delaware, low 40's, 39 degrees harrington, newark, also at 39, around philadelphia, similar conditions, 41 at the airport, 41 palmyra. then to the northwest suburbs, little colder, 37 in quakertown, 38 doylestown, 36 in allentown. storm scan3, for the most part, pretty quiet. some clouds rolling in from the north. look at the little moisture coming off lake ontario, producing some of the snow showers across the mountains of northern pennsylvania, some of those flurries trying to get into the lehigh valley

area early this afternoon. high pressure continues to build in from the south and west. so we're going to be locked into a dry weather pattern, a lot of sunshine again on tuesday. temperatures slowly moderating up to the upper 40's, and then wednesday, that's when we really start to change things up. this high moves off shore. back to sunny skies again, then temperatures return to the mid 50's, good travel day wednesday, really up and down the east coast. if you have holiday plans, it looks good. and look at that 06 degrees for our forecast high for thanksgiving day. so again there is afternoon, generally mostly sunny skies, stray flurry or two up to the far north and west, then tonight, clear, winds will start to diminish, that sets up for another cold night. but pretty much repeat as far as sky conditions go, for tuesday, mostly sunny skies. so the core of the colds he is air, is moving in right now. so, it sit on top of us today, tonight, starts to move out tuesday, then the jet stream back on the move. so check it out. warmer air builds in from the south for thanksgiving up to 60. then well into the 60s friday for the weekend we cool it down just little bit. but again, no signs of any

sustained cold air coming up any time in our future. forty-one, again, for the early afternoon temperatures, we struggle to get to the mid 40's. cool tonight, widespread 20, a so the winds go calm. at least not dealing with harsh windchills tomorrow morning. then afternoon highs, little milder then today, upper 40's, so for today, mostly sunny skies, cold, breezy, 45 for the high temperature. tonight, chilly, 31, for center city, 20's out in the suburbs, but at least those winds really diminish, check out the forecast, mostly sunny skies, 06 degrees for the afternoon temperature, and here we go, the extended forecast, pretty quiet. no big storms to talk b each day just gets little warmer. so close to 50 on tuesday. mid 50's wednesday, 60 on thursday, and then we top it off friday brinking in some of the warmth at 66 degrees, next best chance of some showers will hold off until later on saturday, and you have been waiting for it, our winter weather outlook, tomorrow night, tune in at 11:00. lots to talk about.
