philadelphia it started on the schuylkill expressway near university avenue around 9:30. then ended about a mile away on the vine street expressway near 22nd street. and that is where we will find "eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter live overlooking the scene and walt, what a big difference from a few hours ago. >> reporter: you can truly say that thanksgiving came, two days early for trooper patrick casey, casey, surviving a vicious gun battle on the lanes of the vine street expressway at 9:45 this morning with only a flesh wound, that gun battle ending with a school busing up in flames, and two suspects in custody, including a 17 year-old who is now charged as the shooter. flames and heavy smoke from a burning school bus, filled the lanes of the vine street expressway, spent shell casings, carpeting the highway, after police say a 17 year-old gunman, driving this car, opened fire, on a

pursuing pennsylvania state trooper. shooting him, before crashing into the bus, which then caught fire. >> i heard multiple gunshots and saw the officers guns drawn every where. >> reporter: fortunately police say 31 year-old state trooper patrick casey suffered only a flesh wound to his shoulder as the teenage suspect allegedly fired at him while he was still being behind the wheel. eye witt the necessary news viewer video showing the scene as one of two suspects, the the second a 19 year-old, were arrested, and neither hit by return fire from officers. >> state police got this guy or whoever it was to put the gun down and that must have gone on it seemed like a couple of minutes. >> reporter: as police examined weapons and other ballistics evidence at the scene investigators headed to a south philadelphia neighborhood nearby where the car was registered, hoping to learn more, about why a 17

year-old a allegedly tried to kill a state trooper. >> the suspect got out of his car, was firing, continually at trooper casey, at which time he was returning fire from his vehicle. >> reporter: police say suspect with three others in his car had originally been stopped a mile away on the schuylkill expressway for a vehicle violation, when he suddenly took off and began firing at the troopers. fortunately, police say the school bus driver who escaped major injury was the only one aboard and in of the bullets flying along the the busy congested lanes of the vine street, struck anyone else. >> luckily there were no kid on board that was my killinges concern, and i hear the state trooper is doing well so that is good news. >> reporter: state police say trooper casey with his mom, his dad, brother and fiance at his side now recovering hoping to go home tomorrow. meanwhile the search is on for

two additional suspects who are in the car at the time of the original car stop. much more on this developing story when we join you at 6:00 t expressway at 22nd i'm walt hunter for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> walt, thanks very much. after the trooper was shot he was rush to nearby hahnemann university hospital and that is where "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos is live with the latest on that trooper's condition, hi there, greg. >> reporter: good evening. we are told that trooper at hahnemann university hospital is in good condition tonight, in fact, officials say he ace a alert, aware, and even making jokes. after a short pursuit which ended in this crash and fire, trooper casey starts to take fire and when suspects got out of the car and troop are casey started to immediately return fire. >> reporter: pennsylvania state trooper patrick casey shot through shoulder and rushed here to hahnemann

university hospital. he was helping to backup two other troopser when the the driver sped off. he persued and that is when the shooting happened. throughout the morning and, both city and state family and friend visiting, trooper casey. was fortunately expected to make a full recovery. >> it is shoulder wound. he described it the as his lap. >> reporter: seven year veteran of the state police and can expect to be home in time for thanksgiving. >> more than likely tomorrow, but he will be under

togethers. >> yes. >> reporter: how does that work. >> it wasn't really good. the the floor conditions at the gym, like it was kind of messed up, the floor was dusty. >> reporter: veronica joyner has asked the philadelphia school district for help, only to be told that there is no school gym space, anywhere in the city, and the mighty elephant can share. the the city of philadelphia recently stepped up and provided the team a temporary court, a few days a week a at a local rec center that the joyner says is in a very unsafe, part of the city. >> i'm going to have to send a team over in the van, because i don't feel comfortable, walking in that area by themselves. >> reporter: do you think that there is some politics going on here because you are a charter school. >> i think so. i have thought that. because there is no other reason why the help should not be extended. >> reporter: but what would the school district care about you being a charter school. >> competition. we have 97 percent of our

"eyewitness news" continues a at 5:30 with the latest on the pennsylvania state trooper, shot in the line of duty. it all started with a traffic stop ts morning along the schuylkill expressway, that is when one suspect, sped away and allegedly caused this fiery crash involving a school bus. and this is video of the violent confrontation between a suspect and troopers, and stunned commuters, were left stuck on the the highway. here you can see suspects being taken into custody, eyewitness erika cabrera a shares cell phone video of the officers walking suspect down the expressway in handcuffs. wild scene unfolded as morning

rush comes to an even. >> one eyewitness got a bird eye view from a nearby apartment building. >> we were up in the sixth floor of the apartment tower over there and heard noise and we thought it was gunfire. we looked out window and sure enough there was an exchange of gunfire. we saw... >> reporter: how many shots. >> i'm guessing probably 30. cops came out of the second cruiser, opened up the trunk and that is where wrapped gunfire came from. >> amazingly in one else on the ground was hurt in the gunfire. there is good news to report about the injured trooper, 31 year-old patrick casey. suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder but we are told he is talking in good spirits and should be in home in time for thanksgiving with his family. trooper casey is a member of the pennsylvania state police since 2009. police have two suspects in custody but two others are still at large. >> "eyewitness news" reporter steve paterson live outside state police belmont barracks in wynfield with the search for those suspects, steve.

>> reporter: ukee and jessica the 17 year-old, teenager accused of shooting a state trooper is in police custody here, being questioned, by police but just moment ago, we spoke to the 17 year-old father who says he doesn't know what happened and says his sonnies innocent but manhunt for those two other suspects, continues. at home base a head count. >> two people in custody, okay, the third and fourth, if you will, fled the scene, we have a positive id on number three, we were still working to identify number four. >> reporter: shortly after trooper patrick casey's shot up vehicle will was brought in for processing sergeant james, provided a midday update and state police barracks, troop k, there two suspects are in custody, including teenage suspect shooter. >> he is the shooter. he was only person in the fleeing vehicle and only person to be involved in the shooting. >> reporter: with their man police now continuing their

philly.com. there are new developments tonight the in the death of the paulsboro woman found bound and burned in massachusetts. a tip led police to ashley borgnor to bridge water, massachusetts earlier this month. her body was found burning next to railroad tracks. today an arrest warrant was issued for fernando owens of dorchester massachusetts. charges were filed against jewel yas squire and shanon squires for misleading authorities. the couple is currently in custody. at people get ready to shop until will they drop on black friday a south jersey town has seen an explosion in new stores. it is taking steps to cut off petty crime at the root. new jersey reporter cleve bryan is live at shops of cross keys in gloucester township with more on this, cleve. >> reporter: that last year gloucester township has attracted dozens of new retailers, but with this opportunity for new shopping experiences, comes opportunity for crime. in fact, shoplifting, nationally cost retailers

about $20 billion a year. gloucester township told bus steps they are taking to prevent that type of crime and to help some of the criminals. whether it is candles, and then suits at shops of the cross keys or discounts designer fashion at premium outlets gloucester township has seen a boom in shopping and the busiest time of the year is now. >> we anticipate a a lot of shoppers here and a lot of heavy traffic and a lot of shopping bags as we go into the holiday season. >> reporter: to make sure customers and stores are both safe gloucester township took unique step of assigning a detective specifically to retail patrol. he is working with the stores on security practices and making his presence known to prevent crime. he also has another role you might not expect, helping drug addicts get treatment. >> arrests alone will not be effective. we must deploy community policing practices and crime prevention action that is involve a inter intervention component that to helps those
