"eyewitness news" reporter natasha brownies tracking very latest from our cbs-3 sat center. what is the the latest. >> reporter: story is still unfolding at this hour, more than a dozen people killed, four injured and those numbers are fluid at this point and could ultimately rise. rye now there is a massive manhunt for at least three gunman throughout to be behind carnage in california. a frenzy response to a mass shooting with mass casualties and injuries in san bernardino, california. emergency responders scrambled to treat multiple victims after gunfire broke out at inland regional center 60 miles east of los angeles. >> up to three people entered the building and they had opened fire on people inside the building. we do have some preliminary numbers upward of 14 people that are dead and upward of 14 people that are injured. >> reporter: social services facility serves people with developmental and mental disabilities in the area. one woman described rushing to

be by the side of her daughter who was shot. >> she called me. she called. i called her. she said, she was cold and sweating. she had a gun in her side and they were scared because these guys were still out there. she told me not to come. it ties dangerous. these guns are so large, though right. >> others are waiting for loved ones were kept abreast of the terrifying moments, by text messages. >> people shot. in the office waiting for cops. >> reporter: for some there has been no communication with loved ones who work at facilitate. fernando valenzuela's wife is a counselor and he is growing more anxious by the minute waiting for word. >> i'm just ter filed. i'm speechless actually. i don't know what to say. i didn't expect anything like

recapping our top story right the now mass shooting in san bernardino, california. here's what we know right the now at least 14 people dead, 14 injured and ten of those people are in critical condition, three in serious condition. i understand our sister

station k cbs is reporting what we are looking at right now. >> what we are looking at right any is some sort of a pursuit and you can see camera trying to catch up with everything. we know there were three suspects they believe were on the loose and what kcbs is reporting that they believe there is a pursuit right now with one, maybe more of those suspects, again, unconfirmed but that is what they say they are hearing right now. so we will continue to monitor, this situation as it happens, officials are planning an update they were planning it at the top of the hour, you can see now at 6:13. so we could have have some developments coming here real soon. >> no doubt about that. >> shots rang out at 2:00 this afternoon eastern time in the conference area of the social services building and that area we understand an auditorium area was rented by an outside group. right now, once again we are looking live, you are looking live at a pursuit, there in california, things have slowed down now, and we can see, we can see one vehicle there and many people on the sides

watching but now it looks like we are in a tense standoff. >> kcbs our affiliate out in los angeles is reporting that police were possibly pursuing one, maybe more of the suspects. this is in southern will california, you see incredible police and tactical presence there. it appears they are going in here. you can see top of the screen. this appears to be a neighborhood in southern california where they have chased whom ever is in this vehicle that clearly they want to get to right now. dark colored vehicle, again, witnesses reported that these suspects as many as three got in and fled in a dark colored suv but they were never able to pin down an make model or anything like that. >> as you saw they are doing what they are trained to do, they go out in tandem fm, and try to center in on their suspect. this is helicopter from our sister station kcbs in los angeles. we are looking at this just as

you are looking at it live, right now at 6:15. 3:15 in the the west coast. >> looking at this live we want to remind you this is a live feed in a very serious situation that could turn violent at any moment so we just want to prepare you for that. we don't anticipate showing any of that but because this is a live situation because it is so fluid, we don't know what happens next. we are looking live at a dark colored vehicle. it appears that the windows have been shot out. >> windows have been shot out in the front and back there. it is indeed a dark colored suv is what witnesses did report, and we may see authorities lining up behind them. it looks like the tires were flattened also. there is the shot. back to you. you can see that car better.

occupants have have taken off. the pursuit seems to be stalled right here, this is an important part of the drag note. >> let's go ahead and let's go ahead and pull all of the way out and take this again. we are following, what appears to be a pursuit, from the san bernardino mass shooting where 14 people are dead, at least 14 people have been injured. it happened around 2:30 this afternoon, outside, out west, and then suspects fled after minutes, of gunfire, many injuries, many deaths. and there was a massive manhunt, they are continues to be a massive manhunt in southern california. what we are looking at kcbs our affiliate in los angeles is reporting a police pursuit with one or maybe more of those three reported suspects.

>> and they didn't get too far if that is truly them because of the traffic situation in los angeles. the story, they could not have gotten too far but it appears, it appears that this drag net is about possibly to come to some conclusion. the once again no one is in that vehicle thaw saw in that suv that was reported earlier a black dark suv, windows totally shot out, obviously gun battle ensued, tires flattened and now search continues for the people who are, were in those cars, they could be somewhere in that neighborhood. >> and, what you're looking at right now is, of course, massive police and first presence and then also to tactical swat teams, there and now that cruiser, picking up speeding ago long this residential, road. witnesses said that the the suspects were dressed in military a tire, clothing, that they were in dark closing this were carrying long guns that they came in with extra ammunition. according to witnesses these

people came with the intent to do some harm and damage and destruction this afternoon. >> we are looking at two live pictures, one of the left you see more heavy artillery, swat teams, local police, fbi all coming to the scene and on the right that seems to be where the situation has stalled, there once again is the the dark colored, suv that has been shot out completely shot out front tires, back side, drivers side of the car has been flattened. that carries going no where. where occupants are right now, we will certainly find out hopefully in a matter of moments. we understand we are on stand by for a special report.

witnesses reported three gunman in assault of a county office building, and had escaped, in a dark suv. well, now the the police have stopped, this su blank this is a or vehicle that ace approaching suv that they stop. this ace live picture of what is happening right now. and, earlier today, about 2:00 8 people, were shot, 14 of them were killed, by what witnesses described as three gunman, dressed in military style gear with assault rifles, and the target was apparently a holiday party, at a california state office building, in san bernardino. now these are live pictures we

see police with their weapons drawn, the vehicle is surrounded, witt tonight essay the gun man who attacked the building got away in a dark colored suv. now, these are the the police armored vehicles approaching, that suv which they have stopped. our correspondent carter evans is on the ground there, carter, what do you know? >> reporter: well, scott we just saw dozens of police cars, racing at a high rate have of speed with lights, sirens blaring there were swat vehicles, armed police officers hanging off the side, traveling down the road, there are reports of the gunfire, not far from here, and that there may be some activity, surrounding that, and that is where all of those police officers are heading there right now. that may give you an idea of what is going on with that vehicle that has been stopped. >> carter, thank you. you know, it looked to me on that closer shot from the helicopter, that the drivers side and passenger side

windows, were broken on that vehicle. possibly shot out, possibly something else, but it appears that the windows on the driver's side and passenger side were broken. these are the swat teams, with the armored vehicle, and approaching as if someone was inside the suv. it also appears that the the rear window of the suv is broken. this is a live picture from our helicopter, and the officers acting very much like there is someone inside or around that suv, and again, all of this is in response to the the shooting. there is a police briefing happening right now, let's list nep on that. >> seventeen at this point the number of fatalities, has been remained at 14. we have a telephone number that we were like to provide for people that want to be

united with their families, that was, possibly at the regional inland regional center today and that telephone number is (800)637-6653. we are asking that anyone who has family that was at this facility, call this telephone number, for first, and the person, will advice you where you need to go in order to talk to somebody to get reunited with their families. >> you have an ongoing tactical situation at the road here, with suspect down and officer possibly down, what do you know about that. >> i did hear radio traffic on that. there is an active scene. i believe there may be a suspect down. it is my understanding that the the officer is okay and i don't have many updates on that other than the the officer is okay. >> can you confirm that it is connect to the shooting.

>> i cannot confirm that at this point. again there is a dark colored suv involved and i believe there is one suspect down, very active, and we will update you as soon as we get more information on that. >> just one scene then. >> correct, just one scene. >> and only one suspect. >> i only know of one suspect that doesn't necessity that there are not more at this point. >> how far away is that from here >> probably a couple miles from here. >> so can you repeat once again there is an active scene related possibly to this mass shooting, earlier what is going on? >> the only thing i know that is there were shots fired, officers were involved, and there is a suspect down. whether it is related or not we do not know just yet. we will update as we told you we will update you on the hour, we will remain out here, and we will update you as soon as we get any additional hopefully within the hour. >> were any officers hit in the exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the

officers? >> i cannot confirm that. i know that all officers are okay. whether or not they were struck i do not know. >> what led to you this suv? >> i could not tell you that at this point either. it is such an active, fluid investigation, there is so many aspects to it and we he just don't have all that information at this time. >> unaudible. >> that i do not know. >> sergeant is the building clear? we saw these school buses go by. who is in the buses and is the building now secured. >> that i do not know. it is my assumption witness and victims were inside those buses but we do not know if the building is completely cleared just yet. >> what about the the the condition of victims at the hospital, how many people are hospitalized as far as you know and what generally if you can tell us what their conditions are are any gravely critical. >> i heard they ranged from

gunfire. we heard from a police expects men that the suspect is down. this is a suspect in the mass shooting from earlier today about four hours ago. in which 31 people were killed or wounded, four of them killed, 17 wounded, and many in critical condition. police received information from witnesses, and that three gunman escaped in a dark suv. then the next thing we knew, is that there was gunfire at this location, apparently gunfire by the officers, and one suspect is down, we don't know what might have happened to the others. the the officers are lined up, behind their armored cars, obviously, a approaching this very carefully which suggest there might be someone left

inside the vehicle will. but we have not seen any movement inside of the vehicle best we can tell. this is a live picture from our helicopter. just watching these events un fold. the attack at about 2:00 eastern time, apparently targeted a holiday party that was being held by the san bernadino county department odepartment of publia state office building. we have no word on the motive, why someone would do that. but witnesses described men dressed in black with military-style assault rifles, multiple extra magazines that attacked this holiday party. at least 14 people are dead, many others were shot. 17 people are injured.

some of them were injured escaping, so we don't know precisely how many were shot. but we do know police have reported at this moment 14 dead, some others in critical condition in the hospital. is this the suspect or suspects? we don't know. the police have told us in the last few minutes that no officers are seriously injured in this. you can see a number of police officers surrounding the vehic vehicle. the vehicle matches the rather broad description that was given. police can not have a very good description of the gunman. one witness told us that the gunman-- there were three, she said, were dressed in black, carrying assault rifles, extra magazines, dus she could not see their faces and could not tell their race.

as we continue to watch this scene unfold live, let's go to jeff pegues in our washington newsroom. jeff, what do you hear? >> reporter: well, scott, investigators have had a name to go on as they try to track down the people responsible for the shooting. there was one name, they have not revealed that name, but we know there is a name floating around law enforcement circles, and so that has helped as they have tried to track down the suspects. of course, as you mentioned, there is this scene now. there were shots fired, a suspect down, possibly related to the shooting. scott. >> pelley: jeff pegues in washington, thank you very much. now, do not go away. we are not going to leave this coverage, but we are going to pause for just a moment to begin the cbs evening news and then we will start this coverage again.
