injured, and then about an hour ago, a massive change here. a large number of police vehicles armored, tactical vehicles racing off to another scene about a mile from here, where they encountered that dark s.u.v. that witnesses reported the suspects fled in. there was a tremendous amount of gunfire, we're told. you could even hear it over the police scanner. we understand that one suspect, at least one suspect is down, another may have been captured. but that leaves a question about the third suspect that so many witnesses spoke of. does a third suspect exist? police can't completely confirm that right now. but if a third suspect exists, chances are, scott, he's still out there. >> pelley: carter evans reporting for us at the scene. carter, thank you. there are 17 people who were injured in one way or another, many of them shot. we're told that some of them are lightly wounded, some of them are in critical condition, and our john blackstone is at one of the hospitals.

jeff pegues has been working on this story with us all afternoon. he's in our washington newsroom. jeff, what's new? >> well, as you know, scott, this is a very fluid situation, and speaking to that point is the fact that investigators, they still think right now that there is still one more suspect who is not in custody or who has not been accounted for. and so that's why you see that they are going house to house, conducting these searches. they still think someone else is out there. but even if all of the suspects are accounted for, that does not mean that this is an investigation that is about to wrap up. there are still so many unanswered questions with this, scott. as you know, in part because this type of active shooter situation does not fit the mold of many of the others that we've seen in this country over the years.
