>> "eyewitness news" at noon begins with the latest on the shooting massacre in san bernardino, california. investigators are trying to figure out the motive behind yesterday's deadly attack that killed 14 people, and wounded more than a dozen others. so, was it a case of workplace violence, terror i, or something else? good afternoon to you, i'm nick oil brewer. erika is off this noon. authorities say syed farook

and his wife tashfeen malik opened fire in a social services party. investigators returned to the scene where the suspect were killed in a shoot-out with police. local and federal agents are also spending a second day is her clinic a house, believed to be connected to that pair. now, authorities say, the two assault style rifles and two handguns used in yesterday's attack were purchased legally. correspondent chris martinez with the latest from san bernardino. >> as all rifle, bullet riddled suv part of crime scene at police in san bernardino continue their investigation into why two shooters opened fire on a holiday party at a social services center killing 14 people and injuring 17 others. the suspect have been identified as a husband and wife team. twenty-eight year old syed farook and 27 year old tashfeen malik, were killed in a shoot-out with police several hours after the rampage.

>> it is possible that this was terrorist related. but we don't know. it is also possible that this was workplace related. >> farook worked for the san bernardino department of health. police say he attended their holiday gathering wednesday morning before suddenly disappearing. >> he did leave the party early under some circumstances that were described as angry or something that far nature. >> investigators say, he returned with his wife, both dress in the combat-style clothe, cell phone video captured dozen of people fleeing the rampage. >> based upon how they were equipped, there had to have been some agree of planning that went into this. >> us officials say neither of the shooters has shown etch on us terror watch lists, farook was an american citizen, born in chicago, authorities have not released any background information about his wife. chris martinez, cbs news, san bernardino, california. >> meantime, the justice department is offering it assistance in the mass shooting investigation. speaking at a criminal justice

event at the white house, u.s. attorney general, loretta lynch called the tragedy in california unspeakable. >> let me simply say that whatever the result of this investigation, we don't know a lot right now, but one thing is clear, that violence like this has no place in this country, nan this nation. >> this is not what we stand for. this is not what we do. this is not what we work for. it is not what we live for. it is and stealth call to our values. >> now, the families of the victims of this shooting are obviously still shaken after learning that their loved ones were shot or trapped inside that building during the rampage. and now they're dealing with the aftermath. correspondent john black stone has more. >> i called my kids, and said if something happens to me, there is a shooting here, just be safe. >> panic, chaos, confusion, followed the gunfire in san bernardino. >> they had told me not to come. told me to stay. these guys are still at large.

you know that, right. >> we toll her to stay down. i loved her. then we got in the car and came down here. she never responded. >> families huddled together after they heard about the mass shooting. >> she said had been shot, i was a work christmas party, and i don't know what's going to happen and i'm scared and i love you. not knowing is she okay; she okay, where was she shot. >> their sister among the 17 inland regional center survivors. >> she said that the shooters came in, and they just started unloading rounds on the people that were in the building with her. we're okay now because we found out she is doing fine, she did have one gunshot wound to her back. >> hundreds of people were on the facility grounds when the gunfire began. >> most of the people that were wounded, most of the victims were all centrally located. >> they were prepared staff troubled by the day's attack. >> five adult patients brought

to the hospital. we're all shaken by this, all bothered by it, treating these people that didn't need to get hurt today. >> and that was john black stone reporting. now, the front page of today's new york daily news makes a pretty bold statement about gun control. it features a series of tweets from politicians asking for prayers for the victims. but the headline says: god isn't fixing this. according to twitter, this is the newspaper's most re-tweeted front page of the year. >> stay with "eyewitness news" for continuing coverage as new details emerge in the san bernardino mass shooting. when you're not on tv you can find the latest any time on cbsphilly.com. well, neighbors in one philadelphia community come together remember cues of philadelphia police officer who was involved in a car crash in the city's kensington section. that officer is recovering in the hospital, and is expected to survive. "eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter joins us live from kensington with the latest details, walt, what do we know so far? >> reporter: well, by 8:30 this morning neighbors in fact did race to the officer's

rescue. here's what we know from police. police car with license, sirens, coming this way, westbound on allegheny avenue there is car police say turns in front of him. at that point the police car goes right over here, and crashes, into a pole. surveillance video catching that accident on video in the moment just as it happens. >> surveillance video shows a car turning in the middle of allegheny avenue. second later, a police car responding to a call strikes the vehicle, then crashes into a pole on the corner. >> sounds like big explosion, d he just slammed right into the pole. >> eyewitness video obtained by cbs-3 shows neighbors who ran to help the injured officer immediately, getting him safely out of his car, as wires sparked above the crash scene. >> we take the cop out of the caribous he say help, help, put me down, put me down, and i make sure nobody, but go to the radio, he made call to

911. >> say he made illegal turn, we said yes, he didn't go no where, told him to stay still, we all called 911. we stayed with the officer. beautiful. >> fortunately neither the officer nor the second driver suffered any life threatening injuries. neighbors saying given how serious the crash was, they're very grateful the officer they helped wasn't more seriously hurt. >> and so right now, police are trying to piece together the exact details of exactly how this accident happened. right now those details not available to us here. what is known, when an officer needed help, neighbors ran to his side, and we're told just moments ago, from police, that the officer is expected to fully recover. we'll have more details on the story for you tonight. now, live from kensington avenue, in kensington, walt hunter, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> nice to hear, walt, thank you. today police are trying to

track down some caravaned as that hit a car dealership in northeast philadelphia overnight. they struck overnight at gordon chevrolet on the boulevard. now, police say the vandals stole the wheels off several carls in the dealership block. >> new jersey man accused of killing vineland mother and her three month old baby face as judge this afternoon. ricardo santiago scheduled for arraignment. police say santiago led them to the bodies of neidy ramirez and her daughter genesis. the suspect has five year old child with ramirez, but he wasn't the father of genesis. police believe santiago killed the mother and daughter on friday. that's when the victims were last seen alive. dramatic new video shows the moment a suspect opens fire on a pennsylvania police officer. and that suspect, still at large this noon. cbs news correspondent don champion shows us it all began with a simple traffic stop. >> do you have your license with you? >> in law enforcement, no such thing as a routine traffic stop. >> put your hands behind your

back. >> and the suspect wanted in the shooting in pennsylvania nearly two weeks ago is still on the run. >> this was just a very, very close, dangerous encounter for the police officer. >> dash cam video shows how it all started, when officer lynn anderson with the northern york county regional police department, pulled over a driver. >> not using turn signals, and you're watching in and out of traffic lanes. >> he asked the driver to get out of the car. that's when investigators say jackson pulled out a gun, opening fire. >> even though he was shot at in close range, officer anderson avoided getting hit. it is no less important because the police officer is alive and well when he doesn't have a gunshot wound in his body orest's dead. this man tried to kill our police officer. >> here, police believe, jackson tried to distract officer anderson moments before the shooting by

throwing his license on the ground, investigators say jackson was injured when officer anderson returned fire. don champion, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". well the winds of change are blown in. the rain is gone. we do have some sunny skies, first look at your forecast with meteorologist, katie fehlinger. how is it feeling out there on the skydeck? >> definitely cooler day, but also much, much brighter day. that sun is shining nice and brightly, finally seeing the sky turn blue again, nice welcome change of pace from what has felt like very, very prolonged stretch of very dreary weather, right? the storm scan as you might imagine has completely emptied out. fun fact for you here guys, we had quick little pocket of very light snow that fell, but came through as a burst through the poconos. and in the highest terrain, there was actually inch that fell, if you can believe it, and managed to stick to the surface of lake harmony. crazy stuff. everybody else in the midst of sunshine even up at the poconos when we throw the satelite coverage on top of this, see any left over

and billy crystal. >> oh, what a line-up. great line up. >> but he just seems like cool guy. like somebody you want to hang out with. >> very likable. nice guy. also, likable, this forecast. >> well done! >> the next few days? >> that's a transition right there. >> right? yes, the sun obviously shining brightly, but one little extra variable in the win. so that's what you're going to notice more than anything as you walk out the door, today does feel cooler, seeing low pressure retreat, making way for high pressure, and the wind tunnel effect going between areas of pressure, so that is what sets the winds in motion. not damaging wind, enough, though, you do notice it, it does make it feel cooler. we showed you some of the feels like values earlier in the show. let's talk about the pattern, it is a good one if you're fan of milder air, perhaps if you have yet to put up your outdoor christmas decorations maybe go cut down the tree, nice stretch of days to do that because the jet stream pattern is as such, well to the north. in other words, it is keeping

the worse of any real cold or arctic air well off to the north, as well, that has led us to see temperatures well above average, pretty much the entire past month of november. ends up being the two month of november in terms of warmth we've seen since records began, now seeing little turn around here, temperatures since this same time yesterday have dropped about ten to roughly 10 degrees or so. five to ten, depending on your location, but that said, maybe some of you are looking ahead to winter and we've got a lovely winter countdown graphic for you. so four days left until hand can begins. actually just ten days until the average high would be 45 degrees, not going to be getting anywhere close to that in the days ahead. as far as astronomical winter is concerned, that begins in 19 days, just 22 days until christmas day itself. so hopefully get that shopping going. meanwhile, storm scan3, nice wide zoom. i want to show you first and for most the retreat of the storm system, virtually nothing else to report across the center of the us. that's your high pressure cell building in. it is a large dome of it. it will be with us here, for

couple of days. at the more localized level still see retreat of the storm brinking in pretty decent snowfall at this point across the canadian board nerve new england, but we're done with it, so the sun now out. it is shining beautifully. but it is cool. 52 degrees at best for the high. still above average by few degrees, but you have to factor in that breeze. meanwhile, we've got tree lighting happening here this evening. kate bilo will be out there at 5:00. it will still be breezy and still will be chilly, get in the flare of winter going for you, but dry, they did have it going courtesy of the rain we had couple of days ago, much better news in terms of that event here tonight. we look forward in the forecast, not one day is even at or below seasonable, every day, is above the average by at least a degree, and we keep that sun around, nicole, friday, saturday, sunday, and even into monday, not looking too bad. few more clouds, do expect dry day for now. >> i like this trend. >> good stuff. >> that's pretty ledge it for december. >> you join it, my friends.
