>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> right now on "eyewitness news," temple takedown. the fall in the aac championship game to the cougars of houston. oh, boy, good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. the owls made a game out of it, though. in the fourth quarter but just didn't have quite enough today. lesley van arsdale is here to tell us a little bit about what happened. we're still proud of them. >> this was a very good season. temple owls have been such a pleasant surprise. a 10 and two record and today they had a chance to win their first conference championship in almost 50 years when they faced houston in the american athletic conference

championship game. matt rhule's team came out slow never recovered after a pj walker interception and the cougars capitalized. web punching it in from the web. the home team took the lead and never looked back. ward named m.v.p. houston beat temple 24 to 13. here is pat galn with the postgame report. >> reporter: the temple owls have had their best season in history but a championship was out of reach after falling to houston 24 to 13. >> we've been through so much as a team and it just -- it just sucks to come all the way, you know what i mean, come all this way and come up short. >> reporter: solid defense did their best to keep temple in the game. it was the offense that offered little help. with two first half turnoversovers owls were behind from the start. >> we had some setbacks. once you have a physeter will

setbacks the crowd gets going and they have more energy. >> reporter: the message was overall this season has been a positive. >> just to be able here, be where we are now compared to two years ago when we were two and 10, and not being able to go to a bowl game it's great to see the growth. >> disappointed yes. we jump stepped c and went from b to d and i'm proud of them. >> reporter: in the end greg ward jr. and company were too much for temple to handle. instead of going to the peach bowl it appears temple will be on to something less like the birmingham bowl on december 30th but the owls in houston -- with the owls in houston pat gallen eyewitness sports. >> nothing to be ashamed about. a lot of schools would love to have a 10 win season and program has come such a long way. hopefully matt rhule will be sticking around for a long time. we'll find out what bowl game they'll play tomorrow afternoon. >> can't wait for that. thank you lez see.

temple fans cheered on the owls. they are very proud despite the loss today. "eyewitness news" reporter rahel solomon has that part of our story tonight. >> reporter: supporters at the piazza watched closely. and cheered loudly as temple took on the university of houston saturday. >> we're all fired up. the boys are fired up and i'm feeling optimistic. >> reporter: the optimistic highs were unfortunately met with disappointing lows. >> i think we he should have given it to jihad more. >> reporter: while many held out hope, temple lost 24 to 13. >> going into it with the mentality that they might be able to come back since they are, you know, known as the second half team this year but it just wasn't there this year in this game unfortunately. >> it wasn't their best game we all know that. they had a really good season. kind of tough to end the season way loss. >> reporter: while temple lost the american league congress championship they can

delaware. storm scan3 showing us the clear sky conditions in effect, really not a cloud to see and that's how we'll keep it as we head into the overnight period and for tomorrow as well, another day of abundant sunshine but temperatures going to be even warmer running about 10 degrees above average. cooler as we look ahead towards tuesday with a few more clouds but that cooldown will be brief because we'll be unseasonably mild once again it looks like as we head into the end of next week. i'll have all the details on your warm december forecast coming up in just a couple of minutes. >> all right, thank you. american crewemergency crewd two people from cooper river. the crash happened about 3:30 this morning. police tell "eyewitness news" the victims suffered minor injuries. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. also a man is fighting for his life tonight after a double stabbing in center city. it happened on the corner of 13th and walnut streets at about 4 o'clock this morning.

police say one victim was stabbed in the stomach. he ran to 17th and walnut before collapsing on the sidewalk. first responders rushed him to the hospital in critical condition. a second man was also stabbed and took a taxi to the hospital. police say the suspect is a black plan in hi man in his ears 5-foot seven with a medium build. he's still on the loose. protests in chicago after the city released documents tied to the deadly shooting of a black teen. video of the shooting tells a very different story than the reports filed by responding officers. cbs correspondent brian web has more. >> reporter: protesters hit the streets of chicago saturday claiming a coverup after a black teenager was gunned down by a white police officer. >> this is not an attack on the chicago police department but this is an attack on policies, the procedures, the coverups, the brotherhood that is affecting so many lives.

>> reporter: this video shows 17-year-old laquan mcdonald moving away from police before being shot 16 times in 14 seconds by oicer jason van dyk. but van dyk and at least four other officers wrote in their reports that mcdonald's was moving toward them swinging the knife in an aggressive exaggerated manner and at least two claim that after mcdonald was shot, he was attempting to get up while still armed with the knife. the chicago police department first ruled the shooting was justifiable homicide now van dyk is facing murder charges. on tuesday, mayor rahm emanuel fired the city's police superintendent. >> we want the police culture cleaned up. those who saw it and those who with the information should be a part of the condemnation. >> reporter: some believe the changes should go even further and are now calling for emanuel's own resignation. in new york, brian web for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, president obama will

address the nation tomorrow night in the wake of the san bernadino massacre. the white house says the president will deliver a prime time speech about the steps the government is taking to keep americans safe. you can see it right here on cbs3. meantime there are new developments on the investigation. this morning fbi agents raided a home belonging to a friend of syed farook one of the two suspects in the deadly rampage. investigators say the man purchased two assault rifles used in the shooting that killed 14 people. >> step out of the house, step out of the door and they wouldn't so then that's when he stepped out of his car and he met up with someone else on the yard and then maybe 10 minutes later that's when i heard the windows crashing, the garage door being torn, its breaking in by the law enforcement. >> the fbi's investigation is also now focusing on farook and his wife, tashfeen malik's ties to terrorist organizations. of course keep it right here on "eyewitness news" for continuing coverage of the san

bernadino massacre. you can get the latest on the investigation any time on our web site cbsphilly.com. now our region is remembering some of philadelphia's fallen heroes this weekend. a motorcade of 150 police officers volunteers and the families of fallen officers all visited 54 cemeteries today. the starting point was the fop lodge in the northeast. they placed blue wreaths on the graves of police officers who were killed in the line of duty. the officers' families began making those wreaths last year. >> made up wreaths, christmas wreaths for 14 of our fallen who are up at resurrection cemetery in bensalem. the response coming back after the wreaths were placed was overwhelming in support of this, and this year the families decided to take this and do it for all 274 of our officers who have made the supreme sacrifice. >> organizers hope to make this an annual tradition.

ly. >> welcome back everyone. new at 11 o'clock tonight a car smashes into a telephone pole knocking live wires onto the vehicle and causing it to catch fire. this happened at about 3:30 this afternoon in mount laurel at the corner of south church street and cobblestone drive. firefighters were initially unable to fight the fire because of the live wires but were eventually able to get the flames under control. one person was injured and taken to the hospital. no word on that person's condition. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. also tonight fishtown is welcoming the pennsylvania spca to the neighborhood. the animal welfare organization held a grand opening celebration at its new location on the 1500 block of frankford avenue. some of the fun activities included children learning how to treat dogs and cats humanely. this is the pennsylvania spca's first satellite location in the city of philadelphia. >> we've la few adoptions

today but more importantly we've had hundreds of adoptions in the few months that we've been opened before today. we're also doing vaccine clinics here. we're doing dog training classes, humane education so today is a great day. >> the pennsylvania spca says the goal of the expansion is to save more lives of animals. now an early holiday gift for the people swindled by bernie madoff. the trustee of his firm began distributing $1.9 billion yesterday to the victims of madoff's record pose ponzi scheme. the tote tail payout now reaching more than 9 billion. madoff pleaded guilty in 2009 and is serving 150 year prison term. turning to the health watch tonight. scientists believe parents may be able to significantly cut the risk for sudden infant death syndrome with easy steps, one easy step in particular. researchers in boston say newborns should always be put to sleep on their backs. and they also claim that a

campaign against putting babies to sleep on their stomach has contributed to a 71 percent drop in sids over 30 years. other factors include better neo natal care and increased breastfeeding. meantime a new treatment is also now helping morbidly obese americans. it's called gastric artery embolization. researchers in dayton ohio they used the technique to block the main blood artery to the stomach is suppressing an appetite hormone. they say early weight loss results are encouraging. and it's also going to be a great holiday season for needy children in this area thanks to your generosity. dozens of people brought new unwrapped toys to the montgomery mall to help build a mountain of toys. this is the 16th year our sister station 92.5wxtu organized this special toy drive and everyone was just happy to help out. >> i'm a nurse and the real spirit of christmas is really about helping people and

night tonight with clear sky conditions but we're getting a little chilly under that clear sky but certainly not too wintry feeling, even though we are in a winter countdown, just one day until hanukkah, 10 days until our average high temperature is 40 degrees. 17 days. only 17 days until the official start of winter and 20 days, i can i know it's a little scary, until the christmas holiday, but temperatures after our second warmest november in philadelphia on record are starting off very mild for the month of december. all of our days so far above average and well above average in some cases. today we came in about 3 degrees above average but with the clear skies, calm winds, temperatures are able to cool very efficiently something we call radiational cooling. we're down to 38 degrees right now in philadelphia, 20 in mount pocono after topping at 50 degrees today and we're at the freezing mark in atlantic city and overnight tonight it will be a little chilly, down to 36 degrees but that's right around average for us actually

a few degrees above average. clear skies, winds will be calm so no wind chill impact and then tomorrow check it out. another awesome december day. sunny skies, light winds and high temperatures getting close to 60 degrees. that's about 10 degrees above average for us. storm scan3 showing us clear sky conditions not just in the delaware valley but up and down the eastern seaboard. northeast looking good, just a few passing clouds with high pressure in control through the day tomorrow we're going to reinforce that sunshine so future weather showing us as we head throughout the day just a few clouds up wind heading into the evening hours. still looking good. we wake up monday morning again to clear sky can conditions. then we will see a few late day clouds starting to push in especially down the shore as we head into the monday evening hours but very quiet conditions in the short range and looking good to celebrate hanukkah which starts tomorrow evening. 50 degrees, clear and calm, perfect to ring in the holiday and perfect can conditions to head outdoors tomorrow, going for a hike in the poconos, 50 degrees.

feeling mild, sunshine down the shore 55 degrees with sunny skies so just a beautiful day all across the area. 54 degrees still above average on monday. a few late day clouds. we're cooler by tuesday, 49 degrees. but that's still above average for us. do have a chance at seeing an isolated shower mainly well south and east of the city of philadelphia early in the morning on tuesday. and then we keep things dry into wednesday and thursday eventually warming up to mid-50's on thursday. look at the start potentially of next weekends. near 60 degrees. >> wow. >> again. >> that's amazing. >> we're not complaining. >> i like it. >> soak it all in. >> enjoy it while i can. winter's coming. thank you lauren. all right. big game tomorrow. >> at least the weather is something to look forward to. >> we got to look forward to that. >> eagles looking to end their three game losing streak but 33 just have to beat the defending super bowl champion the patriots. plus could the flyers make it five straight wins? sports is next.

>> the eagles have got to break this losing streak. >> they have sam bradford back. that's good news but 33 do face new england. despite losing three in a row the birds just one game out of the nfc east lead which actually says a lot about their division. they must beat the best quarterback in the game, tom brady last week who went 23 of 42 for 284 yards three touchdowns and an overtime loss to the broncos. in the game brady tied dan marino for the third most passing touchdowns with 420. he says the pats are just looking to rebound. >> i think we all want to get back out there because it's been a long time since we lost a meaningful game and it just -- it -- it just sucks, so i'm glad we're not in a position, you know, where

yards. he was named the game m.v.p. houston took home the championship 24 to 13 the final but temple head coach matt rhule so proud of his team. >> thought they fought back into the game, la chance to make it a one score game. couple plays got away from us but for our kids to win 10 games, to beat penn state, to bring college game day to philadelphia, to do the things that they've done to know that they're going a bowl game i couldn't be more proud. >> the flyers have been on a roll lately winning four straight as they took on columbus down at the center to the second period, michael raffl beat sergei bobrovsky. blue jackets came back. nick got the pass. shot beat steve mason. columbus back up by two. flyers down a man blue jackets with the puck no one on scott hartnell. he scores against his former team. the blue jackets win four to one.

now to hoops sixers taking on the denver nuggets playing an afternoon game at the center. jahlil okafor sitting out for the second game of his suspension for off court issues. sixers welcomed back tony wroten into the lineup out for almost a year with a torn acl. fourth quarter sixers with the lead. covering ton making the 3-pointer to give the sixers a five-point lead. he led the team with 18 points. that lead cut to a basket. jameer nelson hit the jump shot to tie up the game. then nelson drove baseline making a nice pass to galinari who scored. the nuggets beat the sixers 108 to 105. to college hoops fran dunphy's temple owls on the road taking on wisconsin in a long day for fran and the owls. badgers went on a 19 and two run on the first half to take control of the game. hayes scoring 18 points. wisconsin beat temple 76 to 60. so not a good day on north broad street. i feel like all i have is bad
