all american tradition takes the city by storage, it is army versus naff think weekends. we are hours away from kick off. but the festivities are already in full swing. new from overnight, serious crash in delaware county. the latest on the investigation. and you saw the amazing rescue only on cbs-3. now there is a major new development on how this bald eagle was injured. we'll explain. >> today is saturday, december 12th, good morning to you, so glad you're with us, i'm nicole brewer. today and this weekend we chasing record warmth. we'll send it over to katie fehlinger now, she is joining us on a saturday morning. good to have you, man, this is ideal.

>> the weather has been so pleasant, look august head to such nice weather, i thought i had to extend my work week. why not? >> yes, so, so nice outside. when you hear birds chirping outside in the middle of december you know it is mild, right? we actually continue to keep the really tranquil weather pat american place, as well, not just mild. so often we talk about trade office where all right if you are going to have warmth, you have to unfortunately deal with some rain. not this time. not this weekend. so, beautiful weather unfolding overall. i do think you'll see few more clouds out there, which we'll discuss, but overall i think the warmth is definitely the big weather headline, let's show you what's going on on storm scan. t heck of a lot. we have generally clear sky for you, but i do want you to keep in mind that since the last few days, we've had areas of fog develop, very likely to see that happen again, satellite coverage not showing a heck of a l see little hint of green pop though back through western pa. no rain here, but that's the warmfront lifting in, and helping to bring in all of the warmth that we expect this weekend. so, that said, there may be

some visibility problems with the light wind combined, with the fact that you do have again such warm air in place. so, as we lock at millville, that's your one and only spot that stands out like sore thumb visibility wise, at half mile. temperatures at the moment in the 50's, that's higher than the normal high this time of year. and we keep that theme going right through the day. pair of six's both down the shore and here if philadelphia, and again, you might see few more clouds, but lab nice pleasantly warm day. speaking of army navy, we kick off at 3:00 today, 65 degrees, with at least some sunshine, and a light wind, that is perfection as far as football weather is concerned, if you ask me. a lot of tailgaters will be out there today. >> can you blame them? katie, thanks. >> talking about it here, an american tradition, the iconic army navy game takes place today. this year, being held at the linc in south philadelphia. as our natasha brown reports, this year, security also top of mind.

a cheer off to set the tone. long before the army navy game, the festivities kick into high gear. the night ending with a gala here at the pennsylvania convention center. >> we're happy to be here, pretty exciting game, great to have these 8,000 young patriots all in one place, all one time. >> keith runs program in st. louis, that trains both cadets and midshipmen. he's not making any predictions on the big game. >> i have people on both sides, hard, kind of on the fence, army, now 13 people graduating from navy, so hard call. >> no matter which team has a losing season it is army always shows up, navy shows up. it will be a good game. i'm excited about it. >> held pep rallies hyping up the crowd. >> this year the storied rivalry will likely be met with heightened security following the terror attacks in san been dino and paris. >> every day precaution that you have got to take. i feel no different than they have to do it in other part of the country, this is an event that can draw a lot of attention, i think it is

practical that they step up and follow through extra security when they feel it important to the safety of everyone that's there. >> despite who wins, who loses, match up on the field, pride on both sides for these brave men and women representing our nation. in center city, natasha brown, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". and the army navy game is this afternoon once again at 3:00 at lincoln financial field. you can catch it right here on cbs-3. well, new this morning, state police are investigating an accident on i476 in delaware county overnight. >> this happened just after 12:30 this morning in the southbound lanes in netter providence township. one car was involved in this crash. the investigation still ongoing. also new this morning, police arrested three men accuse in the home invasion in southwest philadelphia, it happened in the 6,000 block of almond street just before 3:00 this morning. police say the suspects tied up that homeowner but only stole an iphone. the victim wasn't injured. the suspect were later found on south 17th street in south

philadelphia. police are now investigating if this was random home invasion. this morning, police searched for the gunman responsible for shooting and killing a teenager, sitting in a car in north philadelphia. it happened about 7:20 last night on the 2400 block of north park avenue glenwood. police say the 15 year old boy was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and the head in the back of a lincoln town car. first responders pronounced him dead at the scene. >> well, it is a story seen first on cbs-3. this morning, very disturbing update on the health after injured bald eagle rescued from the backyard after new jersey home. now it, turns out the national symbol was shot. and in a television exclusive, "eyewitness news" has the x-ray showing the area of impact. our ukee washington has more. >> the x-ray shows the answer in black and white. >> somebody shot the bird. there is no question about it. >> chris, the director of the raptor trust, the group that rescued the three, four year old male eagle this week.

>> we took x-rays when the bird came in, and we can see that there is a big led pellet lodged its leg and the leg is fractured. >> eagle nicknamed lilly whose little girl's backyards he spent days in. first he flew away, eventually he was caught, and his long road to recovery began. >> the bird is feisty. i mean, it is energetic, it is fighting back. >> fighting back, his future unclear. >> it is not able to use it leg, and there may be some further injuries. >> lilly is scheduled for surgery sometime this weekend. doctors will remove the pellet and sends it to the department of environmental protection hoping to determine exactly what happened. >> if this is buck shot, there is no way it was an accident. >> ukee washington, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". now, if you have any information on who may have shot lilly, you can call the department of environmental protection game hotline 1855-ogt-tips. >> dive team reserve assumes

search for evidence in san bernardino, fbi trying to unlock the phone to determine if the shooters communicated when extremist groups. atf is investigating suspicious fire at a mosque. cbs news correspondent terry okita report. >> reporter: federal investigators usurp. for clues to determine if a fire at the islamic society was intentionally set. members say midday prayers were about to get underway when someone through what was described as a fire bathroom into the lobby. neighbors say the mosque has been targeted before. >> there was gunfire, they broke like all of the windows and everything. >> muslim community remains on edge, for possible retaliation. 75 miles from here, 14 people were killed by syed farook and tashfeen. >> the shooter's cell phones had levels of built in inch corruption. fbi trying to unlock the phone if the killer couple communicated extremist groups. so far investigate verse only

been able to determine that the deadly shooting spree was at least inspired by isis. >> we're just trying to ensure we account for every minute of the time that day. >> dive teams were back at the lake about 3 miles from the shooting rampage and recovered an item of interest. officials believe farook animal evening may have tossed computer hard drive into the water. investigators say they don't know how long the search will last n san bernardino, california, terry okita, for cbs-3, "eyewitness news". here in philadelphia, members of the muslim community are rallying for peace and uniting against terrorism. a group gathered at city hall condemning the attack in san bernardino. leaders of the event say they stand with america in fighting extremism in the terror attacks do not represent people of their religion. in campaign 2016, the race for the gop nomination is heating up as new pole numbers put can head-to-head. cruz surged into second place in the latest cbs pole, now

three-point ahead of retired neurosurgeon bern carson, well behind donald trump. carson saidel leave the party if they ignore the will of the voters. >> i have no intention of running as an independent. but i certainly don't want to be a part of corruption. >> meanwhile, trump spoke at rally in des moines, iowa, addressed hot button issues including keeping syrian out of the us and bringing jobs back to the u.s. >> new details in the 130 billion-dollar merger of local chemical giant, dupont, and dow. dew point announced cut more than 5,000 jobs ahead of the merger. no word on how many jobs already affected. delaware governor jack markell says he has spoke tone dupont's ceo about plans for the new dow dew point. in a statement markell says quote we will continue to advocate that delaware as many advantage, can be of major benefit to the new companies, and the state is committed to supporting those affected by dupont's cost-cutting in delaware. >> 5:09 right now, it is final

>> bust sicklies within feet of this speeding train. it looks like it is swallowed up, but another angle shows that man getting claimed and knock from his bike, amazingly suffered only minor injuries. gosh, that makes it better to watch, doesn't it? thank god he is' okay. well two, people are dead after small plane crashed near a resort in pennsylvania. shortly after take off yesterday, that plane's door came off. the door hit the wing, the plane then crashed into the woods and caught on fire. the pilot and one passenger were killed in this. a second passenger survived, and is now hospitalized with severe burns. it was within several hundred yards of this plane coming down while i was hunting. i didn't know what it was at first. but then when the woods filled with white smoke, and we could hear bystanders hollering --

>> just awful. federal investigators are now looking into the cause of that crash. >> on the cbs-3 health watch this morning, millions of people suffer with dry eyes. it is one of the most common reasons that people go to the eye doctor. now, researchers are trying to determine if popular supplement could help. stephanie stahl with new information about a research trial. >> linda has had dry eyes for much of her life. >> really dry and gritty, and specially in the mornings when you wake up. >> she has tried all sort of remedies. >> artificial tears, then some ointments. >> while dry eyes are mostly a quality of life issue, they also lead to serious eye problems. >> it can be associated with infection, to the surface of the eye, things with permanent loss of vision. >> now linda volunteering for clinical trial to see if fish oil supplement might actually ease her dry eyes. >> it is an oil of course.

but really anti-inflammatory activities what makes it of interest. >> linda has been taking five capsules a day that might contain fish oil or might just be olive oil. >> i think i felt bit of difference. i am hoping i am taking the fish oil supplement, we'll see, i'll finds out toward the end of the stud. >> i doctors say there is little down side to taking fish oil. it is also known to be heart healthy. previous studies looking at fish oil for dry eyes were inconclusive. >> this large study is meant to really determine its effectiveness. i'm stephanie stahl, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> well, it is finals time for students at universities across the region, and therapy dogs are helping toilets the stress at the university of pennsylvania. >> absolutely, i would love to have a therm any here when we're doing like snow coverage. >> cowage. >> you want to rip your hair out when you are doing that. >> just crazy stuff. >> we're out, i should say, without me during a hurricane, we would rather them in the studio, but yes, anything. >> so true, though. the stress, just the touch after pet, amazing, real i let's talk about this forecast, also amazing. >> i was helping you transition there. >> oh, amazing. so, so nice. you said t talking record breaking warmth today and tomorrow. >> wow. >> we stay warm monday. that's when the next storm comes along. so there is couple of side note we want to discuss. main weather headline definitely the warmth. let's go outside first and for most, "skycam 3", beautiful view overlooking center city off in the distance we face south. no worries of visibility, at least here right now. but dow want to caution you, you might run into a couple of patches of fog out there throughout the course of the morning if your travels will be taking you out before the sun comes up. ooh degrees currently, ooh degrees, normal high on this day of the year, guys, 46.

so we're already exceed that. not shabby. very light wind, as well. that said, storm scan very quiet once more. we are watching warmfront lift in. where some of this very, very minor little speckle of the green is showing up on the radar, not expecting any rain here, rather, likely see few additional clouds today. that's pretty much it. it is pretty quiet view, even of the nationwide map. we do, again, though, have very strong ridge of high pressure, that's building in, hoping keep just that warmth, and keep us in the quiet weather for the next couple of days. temperatures meanwhile, are very warm up and down the eastern seaboard and way back to the mississippi valley. little rock checks in at 67 this hour, 62 birmingham, the sun has not had a chance to rise yet. the fact you are in 60s agree in columbus, ohio, that's big deal. exceptional warmth then, continues to be the story. soap, record breaking warmth today, we won't call it heat, it is warmth, i feel like there is a fine line there. but we expect high of 66 in the city today. and even warmer tomorrow. yes, we triple the exclamation point because we expect

actually to come very close, if not actually hit 70 degrees come tomorrow. just unheard of. meanwhile, we jump into monday, that is when we start to see this next storm, more specifically, cold front cross through. and that's going to your honor err in rain, wind, probably even few rumbles every thunder. now we've also goto touch on the eyewitness weather health report. because air quality is less than ideal today. no air quality alert has been issued, say for lancaster county, however, there is fine particle pollution out there. high pressure, in place for as long as it has been, plus the warmth that's in place. there is nothing to really help mix the atmosphere up. in other words, the pollution can settle. so you've got to be careful if you fall into the sensitive category. children, the elderly, if you have got respiratory illness, take it easy today, but this isn't a horrible day. you might just see some haze off in the distance, that said, you might also as we mention see fog out there in the morning that will eventually get scoured out by the sun coming up and helping to mix things little more so, sort of burn it off as we say, but report warmth, 66 degrees,

actual record, is 65, but we expect to exceed that obviously, mostly cloudy, very mild tonight. we drop to only 53, with very light wind. and as we said, rare warmth is the story for tomorrow. 70 degrees, last time we actually hit seven open degrees in the month of december was back in 2006. so been quite a while. let's talk eagles, shall we? tailgating at it finest, perfect, almost like spring scrimmage weather. nice and warm, 67 degrees, for tomorrow's kick off. but as we said, 70 is the magic number, for tomorrow's high. we keep it warm as well monday. that eagle should be on sunday, i a popjoys for that, that's my bad. then look ahead to tuesday, nicole, that's when we see the sun return. little cooler but still well above average. i'll get on that eagle issue right now, promise. >> i think you made up for it with the 70 degrees, but katie, thanks. a lot going on in and around the city today and tomorrow. here's meisha johnson to tell you what you can expect on the roads this weekend. >> hey, everyone, here's what you need to know for this weekend. so first, let's talk sport.

shall we? today is the 116th annual army navy game at 3:00 p.m. at lincoln financial field. espn college game day will be broadcasting from xfinity live from 9:00 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. >> also tonight, at 8:00 p.m., at the wells fargo center, the philly pops present andre as bo kelly in concert. if you love great music you do not want to miss this one. for our commuters in the world of mass transit, the market frankford line will be running at special schedule for the army navy game. trains will run between frankford and 69th street transportation center every five to ten minutes with free transfers to the broad street line at city hall. all of this begins right at 8:00 a.m. for those coming from the suburbs, there will be an express from fernrock center en route to the sports complex beginning at 9:05 a.m. today until 12:30 p.m. for the army navy game, and also this evening at 7:08 p.m.

let's see what the numbers would be to beat today. out at the a.c. airport you have to hit 67. in reading, 66. here in philadelphia, six after is the number to beat. now, i have to tell you, i think we've got real good shot to do. that will that's what we are in fact forecasting, storm scan, nice and clear on the radar, we throw the satelite coverage on top here, not finding too much other than some high clouds, very quickly moving through. do you see the little pocket evergreen though that shows up just outside of pit? that's the warmfront lifting in. i don't expect it to bring any wet weather to us. it is going to bring in few more clouds, very likely you'll run into some patchy fog both this morning, as well as tomorrow morning. current temperatures, as they stand, in the 40's, or even low 50's, obviously at the airport. that's the story, warm air in place already. say for patchy morning fog, it is mild with some sunshine, and we will just keep that trend going up and up and the thermometer to the point we hit 66 degrees again the records it beat 656789 so we think we will do it here today. and this isn't the only day nicole that's expected to break records.

"eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff live at the linc this morning with more on today's display of american pride. great to have them in town, alexgood morning. >> reporter: well, hey there, nicole. the first army navy game played in 1890. it has been held in philadelphia 86 times. so this is big win for our city this year. now, while it is football, that these midshipmen, cadets, vets and families are all here to see, these festivities as you can see already began here in the city for the battleship new jersey to downtown, a competition that warmed up this young crowd, appropriately called patriots. >> this year, little different from years past, as we are quickly approaching, as katie said record warm weather. it is also important though to

well, dogs who are once cast aways now getting a second chance, really making a difference, thanks to some real compassionate volunteers. transformation is all thanks to the throw away dogs project. than average. not even one of these days has been under 3 degrees above norm. i mean, it is so substantially above average here. even the last two days we've been 13, 15 degrees above the norm. we expect to continue that trend not just through this forecast, but possibly, guys, into january. it is just a way the signals are coming in through the atmosphere, and specially because of this monster el nino that we've been seeing unfolding. it looks like this is pattern that's going to hang out for awhile. now, i am not saying there won't be storms. actually tracking one come monday. quiet weather still rallying the roost, on the eastern two thirds. united states generally speaking, that high is responsible for the very quiet pattern. now, you'll nets, there is a little hint of moisture back across western pa, then extending to the lanes. that is your warmfront, lifting in. we're not going to get any wet weather out of it. we may see additional clouds out of it today. meantime, not really all that well organized. you see, look real close, see how little bit of trough being dugout by the jet stream? that's the beginning of what

eventually becomes our next storm system. but it has got some time to kill before it gets here. we are, how much, going to jump all the way to monday, give awe sense what's going to come. 1:00 a.m. monday, starting to see some moisture build across the northern counties, but we should get most of the day in dry before the wet weather arrives. so, at least p.m. time frame when we expect that rain to move in. mornings should be okay. then the rain comes along, tan looks as if, if it comes through like this, with somewhat of a line setting up, it is a frontal boundary after all, we could even have rumbles every thunder with it, then it gets out of here through the overnight heading into tuesday. but, meantime, the jet stream has remained so far removed to the north, that not just the delaware vale, but basically the entire eastern half of the us has been sitting pretty here in this warm air. for the most part. and it looks as though it will continue with the cold air just getting locked off into the arctic circle. that means, polar vortex isn't going to be an issue, just total polar opposite no pun intended of what we've seen in recent years, right?
