now at 11:00 the voice of an angel. the boy who captured hearts around the world when he sang for pope francis take the stage at the kimmel center and tonight bobby hill is the talk of two major hollywood stars. good uncertain future for philadelphia public schools tonight the superintendent says without a state budget, his schools will not be able to keep their doors open much longer. and there's a new twist to holiday shopping this year. why this unusually warm weather may have you saving more money at the malls. good evening, i'm jessica dean. >> i'm ukee washington. retailers are feeling the heat this season. the typical hot items for cold weather are still on store shelves. >> but that could mean extra money in your pocket. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt has more on how the warm temperatures are impacting sales and christmas lists. >> reporter: as the christmas lights inside macy's shine bright, some customers aren't quite feeling in the christmas mood. >> it's not even the same no more. totally different environment right now.

>> reporter: we caught up with shoppers leaving the messi's in center city dressed like their on the way to cape may. many customers spotted big sales on winter gear. including normally expensive coats. >> incredible for christmas definitely especially if you have a lot of kids, definitely helps out. >> reporter: we noticed sales 40, 50, sometimes 60% off for winter gear at multiple stores in the area. compared to last year, the numbers are not good. >> we're rolling with it. >> reporter: ethan within a retail consult at that particular time in philadelphia who runs a pop shop on walnut street. he's actually in embracing the warm weather for his business. >> it's getting people out into the streets and so for us we are going to adapt to it and we mark down our winter gear and also introducing some of our newer items and lines for the spring report roar it's not just clothes that are taking a hit. home improvement stores are seeing a decline, too. >> it is great on a personal level and really really scary when you think about climate change and what's going on. >> reporter: but while the sales last people will come back to buy more ready for whatever

winter brings. >> they're phenomenal. use my credit card a lot. >> reporter: some business owners are embracing this mild weather. telling us equals foot traffic. that's not the case for malls. some malls around the country have seen a decline in sales because after all people aren't rush to go malls when the weather is nice. reporting in center city, david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news". well the pet weather is causing confusion everywhere. take this -- check this out. warm temperature caused washington, d.c.'s cherry blossoms to bloom early. experts say the autumn flowering cherry can bloom in autumn if temperatures stay high enough. they also say the late year bloom will not have any impact on the tepp cal blossoms in the spring. today mark the fourth consecutive day of record high temperatures so kate what it's feel like outside now. >> express cash it feels a little chilly right now. maybe i'm just getting spoiled by the warm weather. temperatures still have well above average. in fact the temperature right

now in warmer than the high is supposed to be today. but compared with the past four days, it does feel a little on the cool side this evening here on the sky deck much headlights take a look at temperatures across the area. dropping into the 40s in some spots. 47 in wilmington. 47 in millville much it's 50 degrees in philadelphia. keep in mine the normal high is 45 for today's date so it's really still well above average. it's still a bit brisk outside though. winds about 10 to 12 miles per hour sustain at the moment. now coming up we'll talk about another chance for rain in the forecast. behind that it starts to feel a little more like december but maybe not for long. i'll tell was i mean coming up with the full forecast. back inside to you. >> kate, see you shortly. thank you. pennsylvania's long budget stalemate could soon make it impossible for the philadelphia school district to keep schools open. superintendent doctor bill hite issued a warning tonight and says that the district can only continue operating through january 29th. dr. hite goes on to say "after that date, our ability to keep schools open, issue paychecks and pay bills is uncertain".

th prospect of running out of operating funds is dire. the los angeles school district will reopen tomorrow after a threat shut down the district today. the threat is now widely believed to have been a hoax. a school board member received an e-mail threat this morning raising fears of another attack like the deadly shooting in nearby san bernardino. 640,000 students in the la district had the day off. those who had already arrived at school were sent home. authorities in new york city say they received the same threat but concluded it was a hoax. school went on there as usual. in campaign 2016, the final debate of the year. the republican presidential candidates went after each other in las vegas tonight and much of the debate focused on security concerns. >> nine republicans took the stage at the vie niece hotel in las vegas for a debate focused on national secure r the first topic was dan named trump's call to ban muslims in entering the

>> hundreds caused traffic grade lock this evening as they march and chanted no justice no piece. >> tate brown 26 eighty three old was shot and kild by police philadelphia during a traffic stop one year ago. the officers involved were cleared of wrongdoing and will mott face charges. philadelphia police have released surveillance video of a man suspected of stabbing two men in center city. investigator sauce this is video of that suspect. walking on north 21st street aft he stab the first victim in the hand and stomach near 23rd and walnut. this happened around 5:00 their this morning. just minutes later the suspect cut a second victim on his face near 21st and arch. if you rock night the suspect call philadelphia police. top night we do know the identity of the driver who philadelphia police say hit an officer and then took off. here is the suspect police say they're searching for. 26-year-old maurice taylor of the 1500 block of elsworth street. near 27th and sears last night

police say taylor jumped into his car and tried to flee from police trying the officer and throwing him ton a car windshield. the officer remains hospitalized tonight sill suffering with a broken leg, shattered kneecap and head injuries. he rose to prominence during the visit of pope francis with what many say is voice of an angel tonight philadelphia's own bobby hill took the stage at the kimmel center sing ago holiday classic. it was quite a treat for the crowd. our todd quinones was there to see it. >> reporter: beautiful voice of bobby hill brought people to their feet inside the kimmel sent. surprising spontaneous performance in front of pope francis in september. and tuesday night, he was back in front of a crowd that was ready for him. his conductor knew he could handle it. >> truly a remarkable voice. i mean i think personally you'll be interviewing him at the met one day. it's that extraordinary of an instrument. >> the choir was singing as part of the soulful christmas holiday program and as great as solo performance was, it was when the rest of the choir joined him during oh, holy night that the crowd had its strongest reacti reaction. >> ♪ >> reporter: it was cool to be able to sing altogether and have it work. it was just great. >> reporter: also just in time for the holidays hill has released a single. it is his version of oh, holy night and it's available for free on his website. roaring from center city, todd quinones cbs3 "eyewitness news".

2 feet of snow in the colorado mountains before barreling on to the plains. drivers are now dealing with treacherous road conditions as hundreds of miles of highway are covered in snow and ice. the storm also forced airlines to cancel 425 flights at the denver airport. of course, no snow here. we're pretty far from it. kate is tracking big changes heading our way in her full forecast is coming up in just a few minutes. new tonight, eight people are injured when a southwest airlines jet goes off a taxi way at nashville international airport. flight 31 from houston's hobby airport had just landed when the plane went off the taxi way. there were 133 passengers and five crew members on board. all evacuated safely weren't bussed to the terminal and faa is now investigating what went wrong. police in delaware tonight say they have proof of the danger of texting and driving. take a look a this photo of a silver pontiac that crashed into the rear of a home on orchard circle in newark. police say the 23-year-old

driver was teching behind the wheel and missed his turn. the driver has been issued citations and was released thankfully no one was at home at the time. the building inspector says until repairs can be made, this home is uninhabitable. >> a year after a high rise apartment is demolish a brand new housing development opens its doors. ing see a whole lot of nothing really. the system that came through last night the rain maker for us turned into a bit of snowstorm for the canadian maritime provinces much that's winding down and as it does, the winds and that strong pressure gradient will start to wind down as well. so the winds weaken through the overnight hours and tomorrow you won't have to deal with much as much win as what we had today. storstorm scan3 showing our next storm. this brought a lot of snow to colorado today lifting to the north but it will bring in a lot of gulf moisture over the eastern half of the country by thursday. so that's our next chance for rain. in the meantime temperatures right now warmer than they're supposed for daytime highs much it's 50 in philadelphia. 52 in allentown and it's 47 down in millville. peak wind gusts today across the area at the broomall 40 miles an hour. 34 miles an hour gusts at the new castle county airport. so it was a blustery day. as that cooler air made it in. four records have fallen in the past four days and tomorrow not a record breaker but still well above average highs in the mid

50s. normal high 45 degrees. so it's still going to be nice warm mild day in fact if this were a different december we'd all be rejoicing and thinking it feels like spring with a 56-degree day in december but on the heels of 60s and 70s it's going feel chilly out there. but we've got lots of sunshine. here's 3:00 p.m. no problems through the day tomorrow. then the clouds increase here comes some rain light rain around 9am on thursday. some steadier rain comes in the afternoon here's 2:00 p.m. and notice it continues as we head through the evening. 6:00 p.m. you'll see some rain for your evening commute. then it clears out. but after that front comes that was we do usher in the defendant air of the month so far. temperatures finally closer to where they should be for this time of the year as we start the weekend. so overnight mainly clear, breezy, colder than recent nights we're at 43 degrees. your wednesday most sunny, cooler, take it with a grain of salt still not cold at 56 degrees in mid december. and take look at what we're dealing with as we move ahead in time. as we head into the next couple of days it's still mild. here's that batch of cool air for the weekend. on saturday but watch how kick

out the candles on his 25th birthday then he proceeded to blow by the bills offensive line for seven tackles anzak. eagles defensive tackle is freakishly good and getting prop lead league wide after the sunday buffalo head coach said that none is a player. last season cox was snubbed for the pro bowl. once again he deserves a nod. >> he's playing at a level where he should definitely get the recognition and be considered but like i said i don't decide that. i would definitely love to see him get rewarded for it the hard work he's been putting in these past years since i've been here with him. >> had a he was not overlook by his pierce. the players will vote him in. the coaches will vote him in. the problem lies in the fan vo vote. >> we continue to talk football. this time we talk temple. four years comes down to four quarters. senior linebacker tyler wrapped

up his career tuesday in the boca rah ton bowl when the owls take on toledo. he talk about his time on north broad street. >> time has been surreal. to go from not playing first few games freshman year and getting thrown right to it and now three years later i'm standing up here, you know, with a bunch of accolades and having a shot to go to the first bowl game, win 11 games the most in temple history, it's such an amazing experience. >> amazing experience for him and college and it will be one that continues in the nfl that kid will be a high draft pick for sure. >> great player. >> great things to come for him
