and a suv crashes and this all happens outside a hospital. we are live with an update. also times running out for philadelphia public schools. the superintendent warned that without a state budget schools will not be able to keep their doors opened much longer. the embargo is finally lifted, that means first official reviews are in on the the new star wars movie. so does it the live up to all of the hype? find out what critics are saying. we promise no spoilers. we will in the ruin it for you. good morning, it is wednesday, december 16th, i'm erika von tiehl. we will check with katie a and meisha. it the will be even warmer than average today but still feeling cool, good morning, guys starting to cool down. >> it is a all about perception. roadways are nice and dry. traffic volleys low for those joining us. what is on tap today. >> nothing much really. it is a quiet day, still as we just said above average when it comes today time highs but it will trend cooler then

yesterday. we flirted with 70 after all and hit a brand new record before the sun came up, but now that cooler air has caught up to us and that said it is still above average. we will see is what going on out there. cooling down is the headline for us in the weather department for next couple days. average high at this point is in the mid 40's. by the time we start the weekend we will finally be able to be below average. not terribly below but below average nonetheless. perception as meisha mentioned is what will get you. it will feel so much colder then it has ovulate. we are talking about a 30-degree, descrepancy between where we came from and where we will end up at that point. storm scan quiet nothing more than a handful of cloud overhead and right now it is warmth. 48 degrees toward trenton, wilmington, reading, slightly cooler even in the poconos. 39 degrees is not shabby. as we walk through here we expect to level off in the mid

toward airport looking good there no major delays at the airport, construction at girard avenue ramp to i-95 is closed and this is in effect for quite sometime until june 2017. use that alternate castor a avenue where we will be redirect, erika, over to you. new this morning, two people are shot the in the the cities, frankford neighborhood and that led to the crash right outside a local hospital. eye witt the necessary news reporter jan carabao joins us live outside aria torresdale hospital where victims are now being treated, jan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is second time this week that philadelphia police had had to follow a trail of blood to find a shooting victim. add that to a car that nearly crash in the local hospital overnight, and philadelphia police are certainly investigating a dramatic string of events. two shooting victims are under going treatment but this story started at aria frankford

hospital. they smashed through the front door of the frankford hospital overnight. one of the people inside a man shot and critically injured. >> that suv actually crashed into a pole in front of the main entrance, of aria frankford hospital and then the 31 year-old victim went inside the the hospital and he is being treated for two gunshot wound, one to the face and one to the back. >> reporter: police say he was shot around 11:30 tuesday night on the 4900 block of darrah street in frankford but when investigators arrived initially there was no one to be found. >> they found a crime scene with ballistics evident but you there were no victims. >> reporter: it turns out one of the victims a 24 year-old woman shot in the leg ran several blocks to area frankford for help. >> we have followed the trail of blood from where she was shot to the hospital. >> reporter: where they discover the suv and second victim. vehicle is part of the evidence and the the investigators say driver who was not the hurt is now being questioned by police.

detective believe the shooting may be drug-related. investigators fund cash and pills at the shooting scene. >> northeast detectives are on location processing the crime scene, knocking on doors of the this mainly residential neighborhood to find any witnesses, as to what occurred because we don't have a description of our shooter, or shooters. >> both of the shooting victims are at here at aria torresdale because this is closest trauma a center, both of those victims are expected to be survived. we are reporting live, january carabao for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". meanwhile a driver is in critical condition this morning after being shot, and then crashing his suv in the hunting park section of philadelphia. it happened around 2:30 when police say the 47 year-old victim crashed into a parked tractor trailer this happened at intersection of german continue avenue and pike street. multiple bags of crack were found inside his suv.

the clock is ticking toward a possible shut down of philadelphia public schools. the superintendent william hite made startling announce. the last night saying the the district may have to close if the state does not pass a new budget. the deadline is january 29th. now hite goes on to say our ability to keep schools open, issue paychecks and pay bills is uncertain. prospect of running out of operating fund is dire. 6:06. the republican presidential candidates have wrapped up their last debate of the year in las vegas. the debate centered on national security and foreign policy and it was punctuated by clashes between candidates. cbs news correspondent danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: nine republicans took the stage at the convenient meisha hotel in vegas where the debate focused on national security. the first topic was donald trump's call to ban muslims from entering the you had. trump would extend to it refugees already here. >> if obama has brought some

at macy's we caught up with shop hours spotted big discounts on winter gear especially normally expensive, coats. now while this means bad news for stores, other owners are embracing the warm weather for business. >> incredible for christmas, definitely especially if you have a lot of kid. >> retailers are counting on the foot traffic from good weather and malls around the country are seeing a little bit of the drop. this warm weather is causing confusion in many places, check this out, washington d.c. cherry blossoms are blooming early, expert say autumn flowering cherry can bloom in autumn if temperatures stay high enough

as they have been. they also say don't worry, the the bloom will not have any impact on the blossoming again in the springtime. such a great tradition in d.c. they love cherry blossoms. >> absolutely, that is a whole festival. understandable but this monster el nino as we would call it, they have a very significant impact, obviously economically speaking but on our weather. i mean that continues to be the headline. the it is still above average, substantially so. even thorough we cooler then yesterday. it is really interesting to see how things can pan out but that el nino, will, dash our hopes at a white christmas across the eastern you had for the the most part. so, unless we go higher up, it is slim pickings for snow if that is what you have been dreaming of. storm scan three your eye gets drawn here, doesn't it? this is latest storm system to take shape. we have been talking about this as the catalyst for cooler air to finally mean

a deputy risk his life to stop a drunk driving suspect. that is collision after jason mostly used his patrol car to stop the driver, who was going the wrong way, down a highway in houston. mostly hurt his wrist, arm and shoulder in that crash but did he manage to end the other driver's dangerous ride. his boss, called him a hero. put their lives the line for is one else but it is something special when you see someone actually do it. very proud of him and decision that he man made. >> police found bolt of wine in the other driver's purse, she's now facing dwi charges. stop what you are doing if you can and watch this extremely close call for bicyclist in poland. he collided with that speeding

good wednesday morning, live look outside, we knew it, warm weather could not last forever. it is a cooler start. we joked it is not above or below average but it is compared to yesterday, how are we looking today. >> i think that is the biggest thing, is it warmer or cooler, sit wetter or dryer? i think that is just something that you can really tell the difference between day to day but when it comes to average temperatures we are well above them. i try to tell myself it feels cooler. >> yes. >> it is dry out. we have a pretty quiet day, high pressure just paying us a a brief visit. we will keep sunshine around once sun does come up later and later every day but once it gets here it is a nice day in general. storm scan is empty on the the

area radar. we have a hint of cloud cover and higher up, nothing terrible but it is out there and that should be fizzling with time. but with that said despite the fact that we did just hav a cold front cross through the temperatures are still above average. eventually there is a more potent cold front and that will up our rain chances by tomorrow. it is a given you will see rain tomorrow. 100 percent chance to see heavy rain no less across the delaware valley. friday that is getting out of here but we will keep it the at a low percentage chance at this point but still for now no shot for any wet weather today. you will see sunshine and temperatures still a again a above their average but tranquil. win is in where near it was yesterday and that is calming down. northerly component to the wind flow but much lighter wind by comparison. so it feels crisp. mid 50's the the temperatures that we're expecting in the afternoon highs in the poconos, more like mid 40's but still again above the a average. we will keep it home. quiet mid week.

hour and it is getting busy for those thinking you can hold off, getting busy. construction start to go day girard avenue ramp to i-95 north is closed until june 2017. you are being rerouted to castor avenue just keep that in mind, erika, back over to you. happening today a jury begins deliberations in the trial of catherine knott, charged in the a attack on a gay couple in center city in september of last year. knott is charged with shouting slurs and punching a victim. yesterday she testified that she tried to intervene and never punched or insulted them. in baltimore deliberations resume for jurors dead locked in the manslaughter trial of william porter. porter is one of six officers charged in the death of freddie gray, gray died in police custody last april setting off days of protest and riots. the city officials are concerned about possible civil unrest following a verdict. thousands of student in los angeles head back to school today, they had the day

off yesterday when officials closed the schools over a bomb threat the which turns out to be a hoax. cbs news correspondent chris martinez reports. >> reporter: more than 640,000 students in the los angeles school district will hit the the books gannon wednesday. >> we believe that our schools are safe and we can re-open schools in los angeles unified school district, tomorrow morning. >> we are closing all district campuses today due to a threat that has come. >> reporter: calls like this one went out to parents in los angeles on tuesday morning. the superintendent closed down the entire district over a threatening e-mail sent to school board members monday night. police say it targeted all schools in the system. >> the implied threat was explosive device, the specific threat was attack with the assault rifles and machine pistols. >> reporter: new york authorities say that they received the same e-mail but called it a hoax, los angeles officials defended the superintendent's decision to

today. 6:36. congress reaches an a agreement on a massive government funding bill that had a today's midnight deadline. paul ryan says $1.1 trillion bill would fun it through september. the government was then set to run out of money at midnight but leaders are prepared to pass another short term funding measure as they moved towards topprove the the broader bill. and if you set to sign up for health care coverage through obama care you have a a few days left. the deadline was supposed to be last night but demand on the health care dot gov web site was so high they extended enrollment until 3:00 a.m. friday morning. you have to sign up by then if you you want health insurance coverage on january 1st. christmas has come early for a north jersey family, a girl with special needs has adopted a special dog that needed a home. karen lee has the story of an unusual bond in which a child and a dog apparently rescued

each other. >> it has only been three days but ten year-old tiana and her pit bull carmela belonged to each other. the ribbon that bind them the fact that they are different. >> carmela just knew that my daughter needed her. >> reporter: she was fostered by sandy roberto, she suspect the pit bull spent mess of her young life crammed in the create and that is why her two front legs jut out and she has a spinal problem. roberto cared for carmelo almost a year because in one wanted here. >> people would comment how gorgeous she was. when they heard about her legs and handicapped, they lost interest immediately. >> reporter: then came along ten year-old tiana. we asked her why. >> she's determined right now. >> reporter: it has been a agonizing year for tiana and her twin sister, one is autistic, one legally brian and has had eight operations.

from tomorrow, and hard to believe holidays are almost here, katie, but that is one away, right. >> absolutely but sweet 16, coming up. >> we can expect to see what looks to be at this point milder then average wet's cross the north east and that includes new york city coming up here. storm scan is still quiet. we have high pressure on our side that will keep control here for at least one day. it is beginning to migrate off to the north east at this point though it will make way for next system in line, which is, our next larger storm system. we have to do it out to see entirety. we have the the storm center across the northern plains and then trailing front that extend all the way down toward the gulf of mexico. but that is the the the front, the front specifically cold front that will be crossing through our area by tomorrow, bringing with it some wet weather, strictly rain, it is just too warm for anything else, but, we are regardless going to be seeing a soggy day unfold. lets walk you through future weather and show you what this will all mean for us. do i think that meisha will not have much to track for

morning drive but it is p.m. commute that gets impacted because right now it doesn't look like we will start to see wet weather of spread delaware valley until nine, ten, 11:00 a.m. that bode well for this time of the day but once it gets here we will see heavier pockets pick up of rain across the region. after school activities might get canceled or at least moved inside if that is the way it end up here but say five or 6:00 p.m. we have heavy rain to dodge out there and it will in the clear out until later in the night. the most of the day is impacted. you walk out the door this same time every morning take your umbrella with you tomorrow. by the time that cold front crosses through colder air finally starts to have a chance to move in. that does mean that around the time we hit weekend temperatures far closer to where they should this be time of the year. so for now it is cooler then yesterday but still a have above average at 56 degrees at the the sunshine. watch for rain tomorrow and temperatures start taking a hites specially by the upcoming weekend, meisha, over

one more check of a story we have been following all morning long. philadelphia police are investigating a double shooting in frankford. "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabao joins us on it side aria torresdale hospital as the victims are recovering there, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, that is right two shooting victims are behind me at aria torresdale this morning recovering from gunshot wound. police are busy investigating a very dramatic string of events that happened overnight. take a look at the the video. this shooting happened right around 1:13 last night in the 4900 block of darrah street in frankford when police arrived they they didn't find any victims. it turns out a 24 year-old woman shot in the leg actually ran several blocks to aria frankford hospital for help, detectives followed her trail of blood and then discovered an suv crashed in the pole outside aria frankford as well. police say that vehicle transported a 31 year-old man also shot. both victims were taken to
