we begin with breaking news this morning a tragedy on the roads in northeast philadelphia, three people are killed, in a fiery crash, we are live at the scene with the very latest. the democratic presidential candidates get fired up during their last debate of the year and then a controversy within the party takes center stage, i'm weijia jiang in manchester, new hampshire with all of the highlights coming up. it is last weekend before christmas so who is getting the bigger benefit here. last minute shoppers or the store owners. we will answer that question coming up next. it is sunday december 20th, good morning, so glad you are with us i'm nicole brewer. 6:00 o'clock. let's send it over to justin. it was freezing when i left my house this morning. >> we finally hit it, first time in philadelphia, first time this season, latest it

has ever happened on record. >> it has been great. >> yes. >> it feels like christmas for sure today. we will have a warming trend this week. we're talking about record highs temperatures and how about that. kicking off the week on the cold side, 31 degrees at the the the airport. coldest morning this season so far in philadelphia a. the suburbs are down to the 20's. we're not dealing with the strong wind like yesterday. it is colder but, we don't have nasty wind chills. thirty-one at the airport. twenty-nine in wilmington. upper 20's in the the lehigh valley, same deal pottstown, quakertown, doyletown and below freezing in mount holly. 10 miles an hour or less. much better then yesterday morning when we had sustain wind up around 20 miles an hour. wind chills are cold, but they are still feeling like teens in some spots. twenty-three in philadelphia it is more of a true feeling with the actual air temperatures, we don't to have battle that harsh wind throughout the the day. nice and quiet on storm scan

three a lot of sunshine and get us back where we should be this time have of the year. highs in the low to mid 40's. we're still 35 degrees at 9:00 . by noon time up to 41. a few clouds rolling in this evening. temperatures level off mid afternoon in the low to mid 40's. forty-five for a high for philadelphia, mid 40's at the shore. still upper 30's in the poconos, great snow making the weather and eagles in town tonight arizona kick off, chilly at 8:30, 38 degrees, wind are light out of the south five to 10 miles an hour, we will talk later this week in a few more minutes, back over to you. we will begin this morning with some breaking news, three people were killed in the fiery crash in the holmesberg section of northeast philadelphia overnight. lets go live to the scene where cheri greg from our sister station kyw news radio 1060 joins us, cheri. >> reporter: good morning, nicole. what we know is that three people have been killed and three vehicles have been involved. as you can see behind me, fire

officials, police, they are still on the scene of this ery wreckage. you can see, the the twisted mangled metal that remains here and police say the accident, involved a black chevy camaro and two tractor trailers. and it all happened around 3:00 a.m. they said that the car crashed into a park tractor trailer, caught fire under the bridge here on torresdale avenue. the the gasoline run off caused a nearby tractor trailer also to catch fire and also three vehicles were engulfed in flames. fire crew is a arrived on the scene and controlled the fire and they found 39 fatalities which we had been told may have been women but that has not yet been confirmed, all in the car that struck that first tractor trailer. philadelphia police captain an atone i canaldi spoke to witnesses on the scene. >> they said that they saw the the the camaro northbound on torresdale avenue at a high

rate of the speed coming over the crescent at the street and contacted the ground and lost control, struck the tractor trailer. >> now back out here live i understand that one of the tractor trailers had a herbicide inside that is prompted authorities to call hazmat crew toss come out. we understand that is strictly a precautionary measure but penny pack creek is close by and so is delaware river. so are businesses and a charter school but at the this point in of them have been said to have been impact. i understand that the 8100 block of torresdale avenue has been shut down, until further notice, and fire officials and police, worked on the scene and again, three people dead in this tragedy, live in holmesberg cheri greg for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you for the the update. meanwhile one man is in the the hospital and one in custody after an overnight stab nothing southwest philadelphia. police say a five three-year

old man was stab in the chest with the kitchen knife. it happened on the 6,000 block of baltimore avenue just before 3:00 a.m. at last check the the rick tim was in critical condition. an air france flight headed to paris had to make an emergency rand nothing kenya after a suspicious device was reported on board. that plane depart had late last night with 463 people on board. it landed in mumbasa after a passenger discovered a device in the rest room. bomb experts got to the device and working to determine whether or not it is an explosive. well, the the final democratic presidential debate of the year was held in new hampshire last night. bernie sanders and hillary clinton moved past data breach scandal and candidates discussed a a wide range of topics. weijia jiang has more from manchester. >> bernie sanders put the data breach scandal behind him

during the democratic presidential debate in new hampshire. the the democratic national the committee says sanders sat improperly on valuable information compiled by hillary clinton's campaign. >> i want to apologize to my supporters, this was not the type of campaign that we run. >> reporter: clinton accepted his apology, sanitierses claimed that this is second time dnc accidentally released private data. he said first incident was two months ago in his campaign immediately reported the problem. but with the san bernardino mass shooting still fresh on voter's mine, candidates debated national security and fighting terrorism. >> the first line of defense against radicalization is in the muslim american community. >> reporter: martin o'malley attacked sanders and clinton on their gun control record. >> secretary clinton changes her position on this every election year having one position in 2,000 and then campaigning against president obama saying we don't need federal standard.

funeral arrangements are made for a new jersey state trooper killed in a crash. trooper eli mccarson from gloucester county will be laid to rest on wednesday. a viewing will be held in the morning at rowan university in glassboro followed by services at noon. the trooper mccarson was responding to a domestic disturbance thursday morning when his vehicle went off the road in quinton township salem county. his car crashed in the utility pole. he graduated from the a academy from february and just gotten married in september and was 30 years old. corporal thomas webster from the dover police department is returning to the force after being acquitted of assault in the police brutality case. webster, who was white was seen kicking a black suspect in the head and breaking his jaw in 2013. webster will return to the force on paid administrative leave today and he will undergo a psychological evaluation before returning to full duty. jury deliberated for three days before a chrising webster

last week. city of knoxville, tennessee is warning a high school football player shot to death thursday night. that teen shielded several girls to keep them safe. cbs news correspondent wendy gilette, reports. >> reporter: grief quickly spread through knoxville have after promising 15 year-old was killed thursday night. vivian dodson was sitting with friend on the porch when a group of men opened fire. he used his body to block three girls. cbs news is not identifying them. >> if it wasn't for him he would have just ran off the the the porch we would have been shot. >> it was an honor for my son to protect another individual. >> reporter: his brother saw it happened. >> picked him up, and i sat him on my arms. i was shaking him. i was shaking him. i said i love you, wake up, i need you. wake up. >> reporter: students held a

candle light vigil, those who knew him said they are in the supposed if they saved others. they described football player and mentor as a selfless leader. >> hard worker. a guy that just loved life, loved the game, loved his peers, and just a kid of great character. >> reporter: police say the the shooting was tied to gang violence. earlier gang members shot at the the home of the 23 year-old brandon perry, injuring his mother. he and a group of men went looking for revenge. police say they randomly opened fire on the teenagers who had nothing to do with the conflict. wendy gilette for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". 6:16 right now. the first day of winter isn't until tomorrow but residents in buffalo, new york are already seeing signs of winter. severe snowstorms rolled through the region yesterday, dumping up to a foot of snow, another three to 6 inches could fall today. they have a lot of cleaning up to do before the holidays. marley hall has more on the winter wet ther making round around the country.

nearly 2 feet of lake effect snow blanketed upstate new york, in the town of constableville, 24 inches and counting. in buffalo the wait for winter is over. the area has not seen measurable snowfall this late in the season for more than a hundred years. the the national weather service says up to a foot of snow could fall there, before the the weekend is over. >> i cannot feel my toes. >> reporter: in northwestern, washington state the snow took many by surprise, including the state patrol. >> we just have a lot of snow on the road and we have to turn everybody around. we will have a extended closure tonight. >> reporter: bad news for secures, stuck behind road closures trying to get to the slopes ape cause for celebration for those who made it. >> it is great, yeah. cruel willly nice. it is fantastic. >> reporter: but in florence, oregon landslide proved deadly, a 70 year-old woman was killed friday when a flood of dirt, trees, debris, hit her home.

>> she went down the ravine. >> reporter: in nearby new portland slide damaged several more homes after a hill side gave way, fire chief robert murphy says that crews rushed to evacuate residents. >> this is one of the more significant winters we have had in new port that i can remember. >> reporter: marley hall for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". i guess old man winter rearing its the ugly head in some parts of the country. >> especially out west, it is amazing how in the mid-atlantic northeast, we have had no snow coverage. normally snow keeps us colder. we have to stay warm. that is why temperatures have been warm. checking it the out the across the country as far as the snow pack, again out west looks good in the rockies, denver, ton of snow out there, toward idaho, pacific north west but toward center of the the country not much. mid-atlantic and north east it wasn't until that lake effect snow that started to dump some snow there showing up off erie and ontario and then northern maine to get a true snow pack.

the these areas of shot of the white christmas on friday, and, snow on the ground at 7:00 a.m. it is not much in pennsylvania and bad news for ski resorts but they are able to make snow last night and this morning with temperatures below freezing. chilly sunday again but it is not windy like yesterday. we are talk about rain showers returning for middle of the week and record warmth especially for christmas eve, possibly into the start of the christmas day. the here's our warming trend average high is 43. we will be there today and it gets warmer and we will peak on thursday with temperatures near 70 degrees and then they start to drop off toward christmas day and it is the the the weekend but still well above average even after christmas. look at the temperatures this morning, we're cold, not much wind in locations and that cold air settles in, 26 in millville, still below freezing around the area around the airport, 30 in voorhees, mullica, philadelphia for the first time this season reached below freezing temperatures at the the airport.

upper 20's quakertown, doylestown and pottstown. the here's set up looking quiet, we did have some cloud rolling in yesterday afternoon and those cleared out nicely. any high pressure building in. potential for lake effect snow but looking better, then yesterday. the here's our set up, as long as highs on top we will keep things nice and quiet, that is why we will have decent sunshine today. the here's next storm system, bulk of the storm remains well to the north and west but this doesn't impact us. we may get a stray shower in here on tuesday but monday looks dry and it is warmer in the 50's. the don't expect a whole will lot of sunshine this week. the it will not be perfect, unis i 70-degree weather but just warm. couple showers rolling in here for tuesday, wednesday, probably into christmas eve. temperatures today we are back in the lower 40's over most locations across the region. it may be mid 40's in the warm spots. not as cold tonight, still chilly, lows dropping in the 30's. dress warm heading out to the link for tonight's football game. monday's high back in the 50's and we're off to the races.

the reason is the the jet stream that is moving back north, so it the has allowed the warmth to really expand as we head toward christmas eve, christmas day and a likely we will be breaking record, once again, on thursday, and, forecast high for christmas eve day 70 degrees. that will shatter old record of 64. that was set last year, if you will remember, warm in 2014, high of 64. today though 42 to 45 degrees. sunshine and cloud tonight and clear, breezy, cold, remaining in the upper 20's in the colder spots. tomorrow, winter does arrive 11:48 in the evening. shortest amount of daylight of the year just under nine hours and 20 minutes. here's that extended forecast, mid 40's today, 50's on monday, cloud, fog, some showers, tuesday and wednesday, 60's and then christmas eve 70-degree and then back to the 50's on christmas day. so no chance for a white christmas around here, nicole. >> nope, not with 70's. >> justin, thanks.

an eight year-old new jersey girl is using her hoff of animals to help the homeless. brian has a heart warming story of who will will day gifting. >> it is something because you get to play with your pets and they are very kind. >> reporter: eight year-old willow faust is turning her love of cats into a true act of of kindness.

third grader from ringwood new jersey is a budding philanthropist for one simple reason. >> because i want to help the the the home less people. >> reporter: willow decided to learn how to so and wound up making and selling hundreds of homemade cat toys with the help of her mom and stuffing them with organic cat nip to make them irresistible to their feline friend. >> we started social media and people were buying them, loving them, and so then we had to decide what to do with the the money. >> reporter: they took baskets full of toys to street fares selling them for $3 each. suddenly well will owe had hundreds of dollars and that is when she decided to help home less teenagers and pet owners by buying sleeping bags, coats, and long underwear to donate. >> they are cold and i don't want them to be cold. >> reporter: safe horizon of new york city is one of the beneficiaries where program director lisa o'connor was blown away by willow's generosity. >> it warmed my heart in the way i have in the been touched in a very long time that a

continue but i feel like you need one. >> it is cold out here, coldest morning we have had so far in philadelphia, the latest we have seen sub freezing temperatures since 1874, at least it is calm, key thing here, wind are calming down but temperatures are dropping and a lot of the suburbs and skies are clear. we will have a nice sunrise shaping up. thirty-one at the the airport. twenty-nine in wilmington. twenty-eight allentown. similar in reading right now. colder spots in the mid 20's in south jersey pine land, quakertown, doylestown you you are feeling the chill at 28 degrees. this is what it feels like, not a big difference but it is cold, feeling like low 20's, wilmington, philadelphia, still 19 up in allentown. there is a good news, storm scan three is nice and quiet. if you have plans to do holiday shopping it looks good. we will be battling sun glare outside on the road this morning, it will be cold, 20's to 30's with the temperatures, lots of sunshine, we will

climb up in the low to mid 40's. making it up to 45 for philadelphia, 44 at the shore, and 38 degrees in the poconos. this is a typical mid to late december day as far as temperatures go. big game tonight at the link. 8:30 kick off. it will be cold but wind light, temperature at game time 38 degrees, if you are heading out to check eagles play arizona we will talk about a big warms trend toward christmas eve at 70-degree temperatures. the those details in a few minutes, back to you. back to the breaking news we first brought you at the the top of the show this morning, three people are killed in the fiery crash in the philadelphia's holmesberg section overnight. we will go live to the scene right now where cheri greg from our sister station kyw news radio joins us, cheri. >> good morning, nicole. fire officials and police are still on the scene of this tragic accident here that took place right here near the holmesberg bridge. we understand that three people died in this fiery car crash, leaving burned, mangled metal under this bridge here

and what we know is that a black chevy camaro came down torresdale avenue at a high rate of speed and crashed into a park, tractor trailer, that tractor trailer caught fire and a fuel leak which led to a second tractor trailer to also catch fire and also all three vehicles were engulfed in flames. fire officials arrived on the scene just after 3:00 a.m. and found three people dead inside of that camaro. philadelphia police captain anthony ginnaldi said second tractor trailer leak a herbicide and they have called in hazmat teams in a as a precaution. >> they are this concerned as they were extinguishing the fire some of the power may have run off down the gutter and they were containing that at the bottom. we were down there checking it out. >> reporter: again, we

understand that is strictly a precautionary measure since the penny pack creek is close bias our businesses, and charter school which is right here, across the street from the crash. fire officials told us that this 8100 block of torresdale avenue will be shut down and will remain that way for the the rest of the day, as they investigate this crash and remove what remains. now we don't know whether alcohol was involved, as police, police department investigation continues, again, three people died, in this tragic crash here at torresdale avenue and rhawn street. live from holmesberg, cheri greg for kyw news radio cbs-3 "eyewitness news". meanwhile another tragedy in northeast philadelphia when an elderly man is struck and killed while crossing the street. police say hat seven three-year old man was crossing byberry road near proctor road around 6:30 last night when he was struck by a passing vehicle. he was transported to aria torresdale where he later died of severe head injuries.

>> here we are, six days before christmas and there is a family, without a loved one an elder member of their family 37 years old, this is a very tragic accident. >> police say that the 20 year-old male driver stayed on the scene. the there is no word if he will face any charges. well, family and friend are remembering a zero month-old girl who tied in a north philadelphia day care center on wednesday. they gathered for an emotional vigil outside sisters child care center. on friday the state department of human services shut down the center while they investigated. there is still no cause on that child's death. in san bernardino, california family of the husband and wife, who killed 14 people began clearing out the couple's home on saturday. on friday night, president obama stopped in san bernardino to meet with families of those victims. cbs news correspondent carter evans reports. >> reporter: during his brief visit to san bernardino friday
