"eyewitness news" reporter rahel solomon is live in center city where many were out and about enjoying this pleasant weather, rahel. >> i got to tell you how warm it was today. we saw folks wearing t-shirts, shorts and a lot of children out enjoying those new toys. the christmastime, in philadelphia. joggers in shorts and t's, children breaking out their new toys, inching to get out of the house to enjoy the warmth? >> it is like can this really be december. >> reporter: yeah, we were shocked too. >> reminded me of income florida and walking around looking at the the lights in our shorts, you know, and it is unreal. the it is unreal. so beautiful. >> it is great, yes, it is great. even though we are going to florida in a few days it is so

states of emergency have been declared in georgia, tennessee and mississippi where a hundred homes were destroyed by tornadoes. storm system moved across south east wednesday with at least 34 tornadoes confirmed. and today that death toll is a at the least, 14, with numerous others injured. cbs news correspondent manual, reports. >> reporter: mississippi was hardest hit seeing a dozens of tornadoes. parts of the holy springs are in shambles. from the air, the the path of destruction, is clear. >> i told my wife you get in the shower. >> reporter: marvin simms home

stronger activity the as we zoom in closer down the shore, very potent storm sell just north of the atlantic city and brigantine moving to the east/north east and we have continuous light evening at one point into the east of little egg harbor. that will roll off shore to the next 20 minutes or so. pocket of heavy rainfall moving in southern new jersey overhead in vineland. probably a rumble of thunder or two in association with that cell. as we head up in the lehigh valley more in the way of rainfall left storm activity the but it is starting to now stretch into the lehigh valley and poconos especially over the last hour, there is much more moisture up wind, to contend with and some thunderstorm activity the, do notice a film developing along i-95 corridor and following the highway there to the east/northeast and we will keep an eye on that over the next several hours and watch them as they approach center city philadelphia as we head into our christmas evening dealing with strong storms, very unusual weather, and they continue. but so far today minimal

rainfall totals but after the next several hours, these totals will start to bump up. we are seeing them moving up in norristown right now about .3 of an inch approaching tenth of an inch in kent square and our temperatures very mild right now running in the 50's and 60's right now. we will top off at 58 degrees in philadelphia before that rain moves through. that tied our record high temperatures set way back in 1964, and we are going to cool things off as we head into the day tomorrow but then bump it right backup by sunday with highs today, 68 degrees as i mentioned in philadelphia, atlantic city that was record high temperature of seven two mount pocono topping at 63, that was also another record for the day, temperatures right now, still very mild, rain cooled air in some spots, 64 degrees in philadelphia, we're at 64 degrees right now in millville, dew points they are elevated and they talk about that moisture content at the surface. up in the 60's it feels muggy and that is ebb by december standard just feels down right muggy and very unusual for

course, they could use the donations. in camden, cleve bryan, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". area first responders got a sweet surprise this christmas day, congregations of this synagogue of philadelphia a delivered more than 500 cookies, to local police and fire departments. she said cookies are a nice way to say thank you. >> the fact that we're determined to put themselves in the line of fire every day even on christmas day, we really wanted to give something back to them. >> reporter: cook writes delivered to police and fire departments around philadelphia, as wells, at huntington valley, abington and bensalem. now that all of those presents are probably opened, the rush is on to return some of those unwanted gifts when the stores reopened tomorrow. cbs news correspondent kenneth the craig has advice to help the return process, go smoothly. >> when celeste worthington goes holiday shopping she tries to find gifts her family won't want to return but she

always has a backup plan. >> i asked to get free byes and i usually put it in the box or put the gifts. >> reporter: that ace smart idea according to consumer report. group estimates around 40 percent of americans try to return or exchange a gift that they do not like. but experts say doing that is becoming more difficult without a receipt because of fraud. increasing number of purchases are reporting they have been victimized by shoplifters who then try to return stolen items for cash. >> 85 percent of the retailers now require an identification, for example, if you don't have a receipt. >> reporter: consumer reports he hadder todd marks say if you don't have a receipt and trying to get a refund keep the gift in the unopened original package. he said be prepared for possible restocking fees and store credit only. >> it can b frustrating. while many are a allowed to return the the january gifts.

authority suspect arson is to blame for a fire that damaged the birthplace of the bill clinton. crew as arrived in hope arkansas around 3:30 this morning. fire chief says that they did find evidence that the fire was intentionally started, and there was also graffiti found on that property. the william clinton birthplace is a presidential national historical site. sarah a palin has another grandchild to the count her daughter bristol gave birth to her second child wednesday. she posted pictures of new born taylor grace on instagram saying her family could not be more complete. the 25 year-old won't identify the baby's father but news of the pregnancy came after palin's engagement to a marine ended. we will be right back.

well, lauren joins us now and so many people, you know, doing the the present things, having good food and if you go outside. >> you need to take your hot cocoa and put it on ice in order to be comfortable. christmas so strange. the another record breaking day. the the third in a row in philadelphia a. we dropped off at 68 degrees today but temperatures, they are cooling because rain is moving in as thunderstorm activity as well. crazy for christmas, right. we have it. rain is moving in across the delaware valley a and we are seeing the the scene changing right now on skies scan three. ominous look at center city. kind of an orange glow, low clouds, obscuring our view and rain is falling across much of the area and some parts of the area quite heavily, and accompanied by some rumbles of thunder and gusty wind as well. checking out on storm scan three that precipitation, swath now encompassing that entirety of the delaware valley, the the shore, lehigh valleys and we have heavier pockets of rain and thunderstorm activity moving through to the north east

right now. focusing on the stronger cells, this one particular cell, moving its way out of the mulika abe continue to movies bound, just north of the northampton city, in the next 30 minutes or so. new castle delaware, getting rocked right now with heavy rainfall and embedded rumbles of thunder. this is moving east/north east and stretching its way up into i-95 corridor and trying to stretch up in to center city philadelphia a leading edge or the northern edge of that little cluster of cells could touch on philadelphia as we head into about the next hour or so. we have much more moisture up wind at this point. this is in association with a stalled frontal boundary. the the thunderstorm activity is now forming over this boundary and we certainly have a warm and moisture in place. we see showers and thunderstorms going in the next couple of hours. so on the road this evening, unfortunately not looking so great with rain and thunderstorms starting to cool down as we head in the second half of tonight. and tomorrow, sprinkles and light rain, so using some

caution. we will not see that rainfall with heavy intensity tomorrow. on sunday we could see a shower developing mainly late in the day but that does look like the best day over the next couple to be on the roadways. high temperatures today as i mentioned another record, a record tier in philadelphia, and a record breaker in atlantic city, mount pocono, topped off at 63 degrees today, breaking a record. this is now our 11th day at or above 60 degrees and several of those were the 70's and we have just killed the previous rorrer. eight was the previous record for the even too month of december in 1998 and 1951 and we will tack on a few more before the the month comes to an end. temperatures right the now 65 degrees. very mild in philadelphia little cooler in allentown. 57 degrees. still near 70 degrees right now in dover. the visability, being impacted by the fall, the the low clouds, and of course, rainfall coming down heavily right now in wilmington. reducing visability down to less than 2 miles, overnight tonight, showers and thunder
