5:47 pm
looking at mess owe scale when we see a thunderstorm that bow echo. that comma shape is very evident, on the weather map. >> sure. >> looking at large scale and small scale. tonight this is a large scale storm and it is impacting the not only us here in philadelphia a as we go through tonight but it has been impacting every where from the upper midwest, crippling snow and ice there to the tornado you the break to the deep south. for us it is heavy rain. the we are getting best of it a as far as impacts are concerned. lets look outside right now you can see this evening in the looking too bad in center city. pretty quiet. couple showers trying to come through earlier this afternoon. a a few showers here and there, maybe even a few ice pellets, i heard from weather watcher peter up near princeton that gobble was coming down. you could see ice, pellets or snow pellets but temperatures really just too mild to support a ole lot of frozen precipitation anywhere near center city philadelphia speaking of our eyewitness weather watchers let's check in on the map.
5:48 pm
temperatures in the lower 40's. too warm for snow, too warm for sleet in most locations but could start out as a little bit of. that here's peter at 43 in lawrenceville, new jersey. got that colder, lower level air mass. if the rainfalls it could pass through that cold level before hitting the surface. that is why sleet especially north ape west cannot be ruled out here. jimmies in media, 43. mostly cloudy. we are at 40 moving up and check with jerry aubrey. jeromy blue bell. you can see rain here. i don't necessity whether he is seeing sleet pellets or not but wouldn't rule it out. further south you will not see anything frozen at all. want hunter in landingberg at 41 and partly cloudy at the moment. take a peak what the storm looks like. there is that big comma shape we were talking about. it has snow on the top edge of it. the notice pink in between right around chicago right now. that is a lot of ice, sleet, freezing rain and further south notice tail end of that comma trails all the way down to the gulf coast and here's where we have severe weather
5:49 pm
moving toward atlanta, metro at the moment. tornado watches had has been in effect in southern alabama and florida all day long. for us can't rule out thunder especially tomorrow down the shore but really this is heavy rain as we get into your tuesday. starting overnight but heavier rain during early morning hours tomorrow. strong gusty wind as well will will accompany this storm but by afternoon that front clears the companies. the it is of the here quickly. there will be a second wave that moves up along that trailing boundary on wednesday, most of this stays to the south but can't rule out shower, here wednesday afternoon. otherwise cloud and temperatures in the 50's, a and then on thursday, cloud will give way to sun for final day of 2015, can't believe it, 50's once again, should be a dry start to the new year. good news for new years eve plans as we head toward end of the week. but first we have to get through this major storm. it does have good amount of rain. here's what we expect by 10:00 e especially in portions of the southern and central delaware into south jersey as well. we could see an inch, inch a and a half here in
5:50 pm
philadelphia these numbers look on the high side i'm thinking three-quarters of an inch to an inch in philadelphia up to 2 inches down the the shore. net is once this changes over to plane rain it could be we have any allentown and mount pocono as well. first they have to get through ice. doesn't look widespread especially in the lehigh valley. this will be limited to higher elevations, untreated surfaces, excuse me, bridges, overpasses, things like that but up in the poconos, start out as sleet, snow and then changes over to .15 of an inch. over tenth of an inch of ice in the poconos and that could lay on the sidewalk and roadways and could lead to hazardous travel conditions up in that area. so sleet, ice changing over to rain tomorrow morning in the poconos, and quicker change over to the northwestern suburbs and lehigh valley. and, heavy rain in the suburbs, and city. same story for delaware and south jersey. overnight period of rain, wintry mix, 40 degrees will be your low. tomorrow heavy rain in the morning, showers, milder conditions in the afternoon at
