we are just expecting heavy rain. further south a few rumbles of thunder. this is is a a massive storm system encompassing much of the eastern half of the country wreaking havoc since the weekend and now pushing our direction. you can see purple, that is snow, heavy snow across wisconsin into michigan. we have got ice, freezing rain in chicago and southern michigan. then heavy rain, severe weather extend ago long the cold front down into portions of atlanta at the moment. they are dealing with nasty travel conditions right there as well. so major travel delays across the nation. here in philadelphia a it is almost our turn. we have got warm front draped across the region right now, light showers, maybe some sleet, ice off in the far northern suburbs but it is this heavy rain that will come true during tomorrow morning overnight into the morning hours and that will be the worst of it. here it is, heavier rain and we have got a little bit of having on the board here. winter warnings in the upper midwest, flood alerts through mid south, tornado watch in the florida panhandle. winter weather advisories for

our area these are far northern and western suburbs, berks county, lehigh valley a and poconos in effect from this evening to tomorrow morning. worst of it will be in the northern lehigh valley and poconos, this will start as some sleet and then temperatures at or below freezing will change this to ice and freezing rain could be a glaze or ice accumulation on road and sidewalks. dangerous travel in that area tonight. south of allentown toward the coast this is just rain but it will be ref i for a time. i'm break down how much rain will fall and ice and sleet we will sianni what happens when the the system gets out of here. taste of winter temperature wise in the forecast by first week ebb of the new year. for now, back to you. some in our region are preparing for possibility of the wintry mix tonight. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco is in allentown with more on that, diana? >> reporter: it is starting to feel like winter in allentown. rain has been coming down for last few minutes, it is cold but good news is these salt barns have been in and out of here for last several hours.

penndot tells us tonight this is really the first taste of winter that they have seen. first real weather event they have had to deal w they have had salt trucks out on the road. help they want good cover on the highways and roadways through the night, and before all this starts it is ice and freezing rain that is the main concern. as we head in the overnight hours and especially for that morning commute, penndot says at this time last year they had already dealt with several weather events but this year they have been concentrating on potholes. so tonight, the salt spreaders will be out. here's what they have to say. >> we will have a full compliment of drivers out there monitoring the roadways and it looks like this storm will probably be, not a plowing operation, it will be maybe some freezing rain or sleet. so we will treat roadways with materials, mostly salt laying that down trying to keep road from freezing up and getting too slick. >> reporter: these trucks will be working around the clock they are taking 12 hour shifts

until this event is over. you can see these barnes are full and is there plenty of salt for all of the roadways. as you heard kate mention it is lehigh valley and northern poconos where they are concerned, so that is where they will be concentrating their efforts throughout the night and asking everyone to take it the slow in the morning and be mindful of the trucks. we are live in allentown, diana rocco for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". penndot says it is ready for whatever mother nature has to offer, trucks and drivers are red if i need be, penndot has 120,000 tons of salt ready to go but they need the public's help, winter weather hits. >> when you are driving in a winter event, slow down take your time, leave plenty of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you and give our trucks room to work. >> penndot says it has new equipment in trucks to better machine for their locations on area roads as well as how much salt they have to spread. you can track storm heading our way with our team have of meteorologists, just

for us, quarries and mining, we did 3-d imaging. >> reporter: by february 20th anyone who owns a unmanned aircraft including those flying for fun must register with the faa and follow these guidelines. you have to fly below 400 feet, keep the the aircraft in line of sight, remain clear of the aircraft, and don't fly within 5 miles of an airport or near people and stadiums. don't fly an aircraft that weighs more than 55 pounds. drones used for commercial purposes must carry a permit from the faa along with proper injury and liability insurance. he says many companies just don't, flying under the radar instead. >> that is kind of where the the amateurs are hurting us a little bit. >> reporter: this near miss is one of the most recent examples of the the risks associated. with proper training, he says it can ab voided if employees are now currently in the air

training for their pilots license. if you want to operate commercially as in for profit, technically, and legally you must be an actual commercial pilot but for hobby why is if you want to register your drone visit f a aa's web site and it will cost five you bucks. reporting live from center city, i'm alexandria hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news" alex, thank you. hoverboard is being blamed for a fire at the new jersey shore. the fire department in ocean county, posted this picture on facebook last night after the popular holiday toy caught fire. they reminded people you should never leave the toys unattended while charging. there have already been several reports of hoverboards fires this month. u.s. consumer products safety commission is investigating those fires bus has not issued any recalls just yet. well, sources tell "eyewitness news" that governor wolf expects to sign part of the budget plan that has been on his desk this christmas eve. governor will make an announcement tomorrow at 10:30 .

pennsylvania state government has been operating with a budget, without a budget for seven months. new developments on the case involving a roman catholic priest originally convicted over his handling of child sex abuse complaints in philadelphia a district attorney seth williams is asking a state appeals court to take another look at the case involving monsignor william lynn after his convictions were overturn last week. lynn is a accused of neglectly allowing sexual predator priest to have contact with children. >> the victim in this case knew his attacker. in monsignor william lynn covered up father avery's record. >> but the court reviewed our request we will continue to fight to keep monsignor lynn in state custody, where he belongs. >> monsignor lynn is in a prison in scranton. he has served two years of his three to six year term. an apparent murder/suicide is under investigation in mount penn, berks county. two bodies were discover in the home on the 100 block of

perkiomen avenue this afternoon. the berks county district attorney's office has not released names or ages but describe the victims as in a relationship. philadelphia police tonight want to help you track down two jacking suspects. they need your help. take a look at this surveillance video. earlier on christmas eve two suspects beat up a man at a convenient store on kensington avenue and then stole his car, his buick. the victim was taken to temple episcopal hospital where he was treated, for his injuries. police also, want your help to find two men who robbed a tioga grocery store, it happened wednesday, just after 9:00 o'clock. two masked men storm in the el guyo grocery store 10900 block of tioga street. they had handguns and forced customers to the florida before escaping with cash and other items. no one was hurt. and more surveillance video to show you from the robbery a at the r and j mini market on wood land avenue. on december 22nd a suspect pulled a gun on a employee and got away with money. if you have any information

lovers get too excited in the the city you will not see any snow or sleet or freezing rain. you have to head up to the poconos or lehigh valley to dough so. i would suggest you go right the now because things will get messy out there on the roads as we head through overnight hours and early morning mainly in the far north and western suburbs but heavy rain will snarl the commute here in the city as well tomorrow morning. take a look what is going on outside in bethlehem in northampton county, this camera mounted atop the hotel bethlehem. christmas city looking good as the holiday passed but this is one spot that could pick up some sleet and maybe even some ice or freezing rain throughout the overnight hours tonight. the not quite as bad in the lehigh valley, southern most parts of the lehigh valley as it will be in the poconos but that is an area where you could see hazardous will travel. here's how day shake out, we will start off in kutztown with some sunshine today, blue skies, not a a bad start to the day and then clouds thicken, a few showers popped up in the afternoon. you can see a few drops there on the camera lens and sun went down cloud are in place and we are tracking heavy

rainfall. that wintry mix, you can see this storm, shield of snow and ice way up here, and it will take a lot for to us get much in the way of wintry precipitation. hates been so warm. cold air has not entrenched. even though we will see ice and freezing rainy don't expect a widespread ice storm because it will be a very brief dive down to the freezing mark and then temperatures warm up again in our north and western suburbs. you can see 29 in mount pocono right now. anything that does fall there will be frozen. allentown is a at 39. rain and sleet mixed. then a as colder air comes in at the surface overnight we will see brief icing or freezing rain. if ill a is a at 436789 we will stay in the 40's. don't expect anything beyond rain here. you can see by 11:00 light freezing rain and sleet off to the north. the just rain and gets heavier overnight. 2:00 a.m. this will continue in the morning hours. above freezing by 5:00 a.m. finally by 8:00 a.m. it is just rain for everyone. that will clear the companies

afternoon time tomorrow. wind chill weather advisory for far north and western suburbs, mount pocono,al tone un, bethlehem, easton, reading area, berks county this will be sporadic. you will not see too much in the way of the winter weather about you watch out for scattered slick spots. lehigh valley and poconos, sleet, maybe snow. this is not a big snow event in my opinion. the freezing rain and sleet more likely tonight into tomorrow. half inch to an a inch of sleet accumulation. icing up to a tenth of an inch. more of the glaze in the lehigh valley. tenth of an inch in the poconos much was for slippery roads, sidewalks and elevated untreated surfaces through lehigh veil. bridges, overpasses, things like. that take it slow out there tonight. in the city, period of rain, 40 degrees your overnight low. in where close to that freezing mark. tomorrow heavy rain in the morning and then we will clear it out, shower in the afternoon. sixty-two is your daytime high. the lets break down travel, poconos will be a mess right through tomorrow morning, and probably just rain in the lehigh valley by morning commute, overnight is worst part there. and then in the city and suburbs, delaware and south jersey this is heavy rain
