♪ >> the countdown to 2016. one hour away from the new year and the party at philadelphia's penn's landing is in full swing while tonight is about fun security is also top of mind. unbelievable sight at new year's celebrations oversees scarred by a huge fire at a luxury high rise hotel. take trip to hollywood without leaving philadelphia. taste with tori heads to a new year's eve party fit for the stars with food worthy of an oscar. >> happy soon to be new year. i'm ukee washington. jessica is off tonight. we're getting ready to say goodbye to 2015 and hello to 2016. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco enjoying the festivities at penn's landing. diana, happy new year. no doubt the crowds are waiting for the night skies to light up with those firework. >> reporter: oh, they certainly are ukee. happy new year to you, too. we've got our party hat on tonight and we're hoping everybody at home does, too. we saw a phenomenal fireworks display tonight at 6:00 o'clock and now families are lining the

waterfront for the grand finale to bring in 2016 just a little less than an hour from now. >> happy new year! >> reporter: for the young and old, family also all backgrounds and sizes, the party is in full swing from the ice ring to the waterfront. >> are you excite idea. >> yeah. >> reporter: families have flocked to penn's landing by the thousands for a fireworks display like no other. ringing in the new year with resolutions and high hopes. >> lose weight. >> reporter: isn't on everybody's list. >> everybody's. >> my new year's resolution is lose -- gain weight because i'm not that heavy. >> my new year's resolution root for green bay. go green bay. >> reporter: you're green bay fan. what about the eagle? >> they're not good. >> reporter: waterfront full of anticipation everyone waits for 4 tons of fireworks to be set off at the stroke of 2016. >> you having fun? >> yes. so far. fireworks are pretty neat and one time we went ice skating that was fun, too. >> reporter: are you cold?

>> yeah. that's why i'm wearing this heavy jacket. >> these twins from lancaster turned 16 on the eve of 2016 almost born in different decad decades. >> sweet 16 seemed like we to do something really special and this was just fabulous much the fireworks are great. >> reporter: some brought party hats and horns head bands but for others it was the glasses. >> you look ready for 2016r did you get these glasses. >> at party city. >> reporter: can you see out of them. >> no. >> reporter: will you be taking those off for the fireworks. >> i take them off to walk around. >> last year we spent on the jersey side. this year we're on the philly side. >> how does philly compare to jersey. >> a lot more people over here. >> reporter: all can agree on it is a night to remember. >> we brought the whole family, and our two home state kids are here somewhere. really fun night. >> reporter: and it has been so much fun down here tonight and really there's a lot more to come. this has been the best year for penn's landing yet. they tell me for the very first

time they're sol out both at the ice ring and for spectators tickets as more families are arriving to tick down and anticipate 2016. happy new year. we're live at pennsylvania lanning diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> night to remember for sure. diana, thank you. new year's celebrations are underway across our region tonight including in haddonfield, camden county. the town held its 16th annual first night celebration tonight. more than 40 performances are taking place tonight at 18 different venues in haddon feel. plenty of great music, great food, lots of fun for the entire family. the party is rocking in new york city. this is a live look at times square performances going on estimated 1 million people are gathered there waiting for the iconic ball to drop at the stroke of midnight. a live report from the crossroads of the world is coming up in about oh, 11 minutes. the weather is cooperating for fireworks and all new year's eve activities around the region meteorologist lauren casey in for kate tonight. lauren, start

your final forecast of 2015. i hope it's good one. >> oh, my goodness it's so exciting, yes. >> this is it. >> bringing it on home but, yeah, temperatures today, we topped off about 10 degrees above average and of course that has been the trend for december. that very warm air clouds mostly in place. we'll change up the weather pattern though as we head into 2016. we'll bring in some sunshine. we'll bring in some much colder air and that's already happening right now. 24 hour temperature change across the area. down about 8 degrees in philadelphia. down about 14 degrees in wildwood. and temperatures right now 43 degrees in philadelphia. we're at 40 down the shore. freezing mark in the poconos. and that colder air will continue to build in as we head into the next couple of hours and overnight tonight, so you'll want to bundle if you are headed out for the fireworks. penn's landing just less than an hour from now. partly cloudy, surely brisk a temperature around 40 degrees at midnight but that wind chill down into the middle 30s. it is going to be a much, much colder start to the new year.

i'll let when you know high temperatures won't get out of the 30s coming up in your full forecast in just a couple of minutes. >> all right. lauren see in you a little bit. 55 minutes until the new year and celebrations are underway. law enforcement is making sure everyone stays safe tonight. "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan has warning from philadelphia police and how they are stepping up security all across the city. report. >> happy new year! >> reporter: large crowds flocked the delaware river waterfront this new year's eve by day families roasted marshmallows and raced around the river rink. at 6:00 p.m., all eyes turned to star wars themed fireworks. >> ♪ >> reporter: yet while many hearts were filled with winter wonder philadelphia police were on the scene securing the celebration. it's extra vigilance even though officials say there's nothing out of the ordinary to worry about. >> all of you know the reports of some threats made toward new york, washington and los angel angeles. there have been no direct threats made toward philadelphia. >> reporter: one public safety

threat they won't ignore this new year's eve is people firing celebratory gunshots into the air. >> if someone is struck they will be charge charged with aggd assault, attempted murder or maybe even homicide. >> reporter: the danger is real. 1998 a bullet falling from the sky hit then 11-year-old joe, leaving him partially paralyzed. >> since i was shot, it's turned into, um, quiet -- quite a struggle. >> reporter: officials say the number one safety concern this new year's eve is no matter where you go or what you do, if you've been drinking, don't drive. in philadelphia i'm cleve bryan cbs3 "eyewitness news". new york man is in jail tonight for allegedly plan agnew years eve attack on a restaurant in rochester. 25-year-old emmanuel, accused of of planning attack to show his support for isis. he allegedly purchased knives, machete, ski mask and plastic cable ties with the help of a person who turned out to be an fbi informant.

authorities say some evidence was even recorded. >> what is alleged is terrifyi terrifying. it's alleged that there were tape recordings and meetings with confidential informants that there were actual conversations in social media. >> court records show he has a criminal history stretching a decade. residents in belgium rang in the new year quietly. the fireworks display and all official events were cancel in the capitol city of brussels over heightened terror fears. the decision was made days after belgium authorities arrested two men suspected of plan agnew years attack. police also reportedly nabbed someone who was linked to last month' as tack in paris. just a scary situation in due by as that city prepared to ring in the new year with fireworks. fire engulfed the downtown due by that's a luxury building housing a hotel and apartments. the fire started around 9:30 due by time. two and a half hours before the new year was set to arrive. those flames quickly ran up the

side of the 63-story building and burning debris rained down on firefighters, 14 people sudden minor injuries. one person died after having a heart attack while evacuating that building. >> the heat was so intense outside, it was unbelievable. just people started to panic. crushing each other trying to get down the stairs and jumping over railings. i couldn't believe how fast it actually hammed. >> due by went ahead with its new year's firework display nearby at the birds, the world's tallest building even as firefighters worked to contain the fire at the hotel. the cause of that blaze has yet to be determine. an elderly woman is recovering tonight after being shot in the face during a robbery. police say 75-year-old victim was robbed this morning as she walk home from the shop rite grocery store in tacony. the woman put up a fight before the suspect shot her in the face. took $400 in cash and her cell phone. neighbors tell us, the victim is tough. >> five to 10-year-old all day long.

>> she deals with more. >> pretty. you don't need to shoot an old woman. she's stubborn. i know she fought them off. but it's not a bullet worthy. >> remarkablely the woman's injuries are not life-threatening. police are search fog a in his late 20s who sped away silver colored car. one of this year's most popular christmas gifts is keeping doctors business. rothman institute in philadelphia says it has seen many injuries from those hoverboards. local doctors are upping people to wear protective gear and start slowly with the hoverboards. the new jersey division of consumer affairs announced that hoverboards are being investigated by the us consumer product safety commission for possible fire hazards. no one was lucky enough to wint entire powerball jackpot, but there was one ticket, one ticket sold in pennsylvania worth $1 million. it was purchased in philadelphia philly sunoco station in at a coneage matched five numbers but not the powerball. let's show you the winning numbers. 12, 36, 38, 54, 61 and the

ringing in 2016 in style. she went to an iconic building where tonight it's like hollywood on the schuylkill. ♪ >> reporter: dress rehearsal 50 plus crew are staging this iconic building to feel like the sets of hollywood. >> action it's vintage hollywood new year's eve atwater works. >> for one night only let us take you behind theville set ropes of the biggest night of the year. >> really want them to be transported to a different pla place. >> meet the visionary behind the lense our director. >> we different rooms different time periods we started with silent films much casablanca bar and then we move to the ballroom which was hitchcock which is 1950s early '60's. >> keep those credits rolling with the executive producer who scouter the water work and it factor years ago. >> i would come home from the poconos. i'd drive by here all the time and i would just see this amazing building just sitting

happy new year. >> always a celebration. with the dog, popcorn, celebrating all drove up to the nines. >> happiness and health in 2016 and weather is perfect tonight. >> temperatures chilling off but dry conditions after we had 5-inches over 5-inches of rainfall in the month of december in philadelphia. yeah, it's been very soggy and of course very mild as well we'll change both of those factors as we head into 2016 for at least the first week but temperatures across the globe as we're ringing in 2016, all over the place. sultry one in rio de janiero. 82 degrees. but chilly in moscow, bundled up 10 degrees to ring in 2016. paris 46 degrees. sidney, australia nice comfortable 70 degrees to ring in the new year in kathmandu temperatures there 45 degrees. in hong kong rinking in the new year 66 degrees that's not too bad but our trend of course for december has been for extremely mild air.

days at bore above 60 degrees at most on record we had eight in two years dating back to the 1800's this december 13 we destroyed that and of course four of those days we had temperatures in the 70s. and we've had the soggy conditions as well. warmer air is capable of holding more moisture. we had over 5-inches of rainfall but nice, dry conditions right now on storm scan3. we still do have clouds in pla place. we'll kick those out as we head into the day tomorrow. mostly sunny conditions for the new year heading out for the mummers parade you'll need to bundle up. 9:00 o'clock 37 degrees. breezy as well especially towards lunch time. 42 degrees but that wind chill will be down into the 30s and temperatures are dropping off into it 30s in our neighborhood network. 39 degrees right now in wayne. we're at 38 degrees in mace lanning and temperature in philadelphia 43 degrees right now. chillier in the lehigh valley 39. at the freezing mark in the poconos. but we're also right now dealing with a wind chill factor those winds out of the northwest up around five, 10 miles per hour.

and it is having an impact on that feels like temperature so feeling more like 37 degrees right now in philadelphia. feeling like 20s in the poconos and feeling like upper 30s down the shore. it's just going to get colder from here on out. a dip in the jet stream will bring the chillier air in for your new year's day really settles in as we head into saturday and the upcoming weekend. talking about temperatures actually very seasonal for us but unusual for us with highs in the low 40s and then as we head into monday, an arctic cold front is going to drop through an open this door to the very cold air to our north and that's going to take temperatures down another knowledge as we head into the start of next week but for tonight, 35 degrees. chilly breeze out of the northwest. tomorrow mostly sunny conditions, colder and brisk. a high temperature of 44 degrees. and we will be dealing with that northwesterly wind that will be pretty breezy tomorrow. we get a break from the winds on saturday. but cold sunshine, 42 degrees. it's back to the breeze on sunday, 44 degrees. and then on monday on the back side of that arctic front we're down to 39 degrees.

we start off in the 20s for the first time this season. and then just down right cold as we head into next tuesday. high temperature 36 degrees. it's going to be blustery. those wind chills will likely be in the 20s for a good portion of the day. really changing things up for the new year. >> december was fun while it lasted. >> yeah. bye. >> almost over. bye. pat has got your sports. >> more than 48 hours later many continue to reaction chip kelly firing. we will hear from an eagle. a patriot an talking head. that is coming up next in sports.

>> you did. >> i saw it. >> nice. chip kelly is gone. howie roseman is back in control and eagles season is come to go close without a championship for the 55th consecutive year. just after boring winter in philadelphia. many of the eagles players continued to react to the firing of their head coach today. while a iteming to prepare for a meaningless game against the new york giants on sunday. demarco murray was one of chip kelly's pride signings in the off season. he reactioned to the release of his coach. >> i'm a quiet guy. i think he was quite guy as well. i never kind of, i guess, you know just from past coaches i had little bit more outspoken and things of that nature. but, you know, can't compare him to anyone else. like i said he's had lot of success and i wish him nothing but the best. >> one person who was not particularly happy about chip getting the boot was patriots head coach bell belichick. he stood up for his friend when asked about the release today.

>> it's really disappointing, you know, chip kelly to me is a really good football coach and does he a great job. he's done a good job with that team. a lot of players that were on the eagles are no longer on the eagles are really -- aren't really doing too much for anybody else either. >> every monday following eagles game during his three seasons he would join angelo cataldi. he made one more call to angelo to say goodbye. >> i got to say, it was the most gracious conversation i can ever remember having with anyone i ever talked about or dealt with in sports in my life. he could not have been nicer. he was very -- he was very complimentary on the conversations we had had over the years. he was very philosophical about what had happened to him. very confident of his future. and i couldn't believe it. >> here's it is ukee.
