this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". happy new year, the first day of 2016. a look at philadelphia and cities around the world celebrated. plus new years eve tradition, the mummers he parade takes place today, groups are waking up and getting ready to the big day and marching down broad street a look at those preparations straight ahead. >> how is today's forecast looking for that parade? kate has a check on your new yeast days weather.rade? very important with all of those mummers strutting around. very soon. it is january 1st, good morning, i'm nicole brewer. happy new year. >> i'm jan carabeo. erika is off this morning. so let's gather check on the forecast with katie. thousands are going to go out to see the mummers.

how will it feel? >> definitely feel chilly but seasonably so, something we've not experienced lately, seasonable weather, the entire month of december above average, as was november of record breaking month, as well, for our area. but we are expecting to see some very calm and collected weather settle in for our area as well as we move forward in this forecast. quiet beginning to the day on storm scan3, all is tranquil. we are expect to go see skies clear out nicely even though there are hands full of clouds when you go out to the three hour loop overlooking the delaware valley. just some high clouds, nothing in the way of fog. that's been of concern obviously as of late. it is not going to be for us here today or for many days ahead actually. we are going to see a very very quiet pattern un fowl here. couple of properties come in to keep us on l chilly side. currently at 41 degrees, 38 currently in wilmington, and you're at 38 in trenton, so it is a colder beginning to the morning than this same time yesterday. actually below freezing even up at mount pocono, very

modest breeze, but enough that you will notice it, so with seasonable conditions, talking mid 40's, both at the shore point and here in the city of philadelphia. you won't even break out of the 30's up in the mountains, brisk, and chilly, that said, and even despite that sunshine, not going to warm up all that readily. but quiet weather is what's ringing in 2016. even though it is a colder pattern that's unfolding we are expecting sunshine for days. so granted chilly but it will look a heck of a lot like southern california in the days ahead which isn't the worse news guys considering it has been so darn gloomy as of late. >> we will take it. phillies iconic new years tradition starts here in just a few hours. >> looking live at city hall where the mum letters give their main performance cents and the judges will pick the winners. right, they have to get ready for their long and fun day ahead here at quaker city. pretty much dark here but won't be for much longer. across the city everyone is busy, sneak at the peak at the fancy brigade, last minute things are underway. things will fall into place until the parade gears up until 9:00 this morning watch to expect for the 116th mummers parade, all of your favorite fancies, win chest, comics, string bands, fancy brigades, will be there, and the new philadelphia division this year welcoming differs participants including the second drill team, 10,000 participants, 40 plus bands, will strut down broad, plus, those fancy brigade shows at noon and 5:00. we spoke to fancy brigade club president bill berg, jr., he said after decades of parades

and fancy brigades shows, the day of nerves never quite go away. >> if you're not excited and not nervous then you shouldn't be in this parade. it is what it is all b you worked all year hard, it is our superbowl. there are 11 peoples out there, everybody wants to win it. only one guy will come out with the first prize plaque, and that's what everybody wants to do. >> and that of course is a major factor, who is going to win these competitions this year. here at quaker city the set up begins at about 5:00 this morning, they want to impress their viewers of course, themselves, their competitors, and of course those judges. now, up first this year will be those new philadelphia division participants. live here in south philly, justin finch, cbs-3, "eyewitness news", jan, neck snow. >> looking forward to it, thank you. extra pa tolls will also be there making sure everyone stays safe for the mummers parade. last night philadelphia police stepped up security along the delaware river waterfront as well. extra vigilance even though

officials say there is nothing out of the ordinary to worry about. >> all of you know the reports of some threat made toward new york, washington and los angeles. there have been no direct threats made toward philadelphia but that doesn't mean that we don't need to be vigilant. >> with the threat of terrorism looming, 6,000 nypd officers were on patrol watching over the huge crowds in new york city times square. >> check that out. beautiful display over penn's landing last night, the clock struck midnight, and the skies lit up with fireworks to celebrate the new year. here's reporter kim hutchinson with how the rest of the country rang in 2016. >> america says hello to 2016. cities large and small rang in the new year, each in its own unique style. times square of course was the place to be in new york city. officials expected a million people to pack the space. at midnight the waterford crystal ball, 12 feet in

diameter, sporting more than 2500 crystal triangles, came down, to mark the beginning of january 2016. raleigh, north carolina celebrated by dropping an acorn. while in atlanta, crowds gathered watch a peach drop n mobile, alabama they celebrate dollars by dropping a moon pie. fort worth, texas, treated new years revelers to impressive light and fireworks show. this was the scene on beil street in memphis, tennessee, people galt toward watch a guitar drop. unfortunately, it stalled. revelers in new orleans partied as hard as would you expect them to in the biggies i. same goes for people on the strip in las vegas, west coast represented itself well as usualment san francisco party centered around treasure island, while seattle iconic space needle perfect counter point for the city's fireworks display. cbs-3, "eyewitness news". new this morning, fire officials are investigating a two alarm fire at a home in

evesham township. it happened just before 12:30 in a two-story house on plymouth drive. heavy fire was showing from the wack of the home. crews evaculated the building. everyone inside was able to get out the house unharmed. no word yet on the cause. >> and police officer is in the hospital after an accident in glassboro. just before 1:30 this morning, police and emergency crews responded for 100 block of buck road for report of police car accident and injured officer. only one car was involved in this accident. the officer was taken to the hospital. he is said to be in stable condition. >> new years celebrations around the world were changed after several threat of terror attacks. this morning, a new york man behind bars for allegedly planning an attack on restaurant in rochester. twenty-five year oley manual luckman planned the tack. allegedly purchased knives and michetti's, ski masks, and plastic cable ties with the help after person who turned out to be fbi i am form ability. authorities say some evidence

was even corded. >> what is alleged is terrifying. it is allege that there were tape recordings, and meetings, with confidential informants, that there were actual conversations in social media. >> court records show he has criminal history stretching back a decade. >> meantime, residents in belgium rang in the new year quietly. the fear works display and all official events were canceled in the capitol city of brussels over heightened fears of terror attacks. the decision was made days after belgium authorities arrested two men suspected of planning a new years attack. police also reportedly nabbed someone who was leng today last month's attack in paris. >> the new years celebrations went off in munich, germany, despite threat of terror attack there. police tightened security after a tip that isis was planning to strike with five to seven suicide bombers. the warning came about an hour before the city rang in the new year. police asked people to stay away from two of the city

train station. >> very scare situation to tell you about in due by, the city prepared to ring in the new year with fireworks. fire engulfed the address downtown dubai, housing hotel and ability. the fire started around 9:30, dubai time, 14 people suffered minor injuries, one person died after having a heart attack while evacuating that building. dtbai went ahead with its elaborate fireworks display nearby at the world's tallest building, even as firefighters worked to contain that fire. >> the 127th road parade steps move just a few hours now. already, hundreds are lining the parade route in pasadena, california. here is a look at last year's parade. temperatures in southern california are expected to be a little lower than usual early this morning. but that's not stopping fans. there is an unprecedented amount of security, as well. >> this year's grand marshall is dock ooh men tear yan glenn

hundreds have been evaculated. >> we're at the point now, that the sandbag something not going to hold it back. we're going to lose probably anywhere from 100 to 150 homes will be affected by this flood if not more. >> the mississippi river near record levels at many places in st. louis it peaked about seven and a half feet below the 1993 record. well, one of this year's most popular christmas gift is keeping doctors busy this holiday season. the rothman institute here if philadelphia, says, it has seen being injuries from hoverboards, local doctors urging people to wear protective gear and start slowly with their hoverboards. the new jersey division of consumer affairs announced hoverboards are being investigated by the us consumer product safety commission for possible fire hazards. we just keep hearing about these things, people are either falling off of them or they're blowing up. crazy. >> i do not have one. >> no. >> nor do i want one.

nor do i want toroid one. >> seriously. let's talk about this forecast, katie. it was nice yesterday. cold, but quiet. >> hey, the turn of the, you know, new year. to actually feel like it is cold outside, it is, in fact, going to stay that way. and very quiet, this is one of the most boring forecasts frankly we've had in a long time. >> yes, i know, i like doing this weather. happy new year everyone, we do start this 2016 year off on a very tranquil note for one thing, we've got sunshine for days for you here. no major storm potential at least not initially, and seasonable chill, at least overall, now, once we get to the seven day, you will see things do go downhill in the thermometer department, but start things off with what's going on in the here and now, live look at "skycam 3", the quiet town of bethlehem. all of the festivities have since wrapped up here, nobody's still out there, and about. but, yes, chilly start to the morning here in the lehigh valley. we can expect to see more

sunshine up here, as women, but with the clearing sky, obviously allows the temperatures to drop bit more readily. granted do you still have some cloud cover, see how they're starting to thin out off to the west. so even though, yes, cloudy picture, these are thin and high clouds that we have out there. even lake enhanced snow falling down of lake erie, ontario. that will will not affect us. high pressure is our story it, will continue to be so for many days ahead. however as we look ahead to the upcoming weekends, most specifically monday, another front. we can go ahead and call this arctic cold front, ushers in much chillier air, sends temperatures on baby nose dive. it means we are looking at below average conditions for the first time in weeks. now, that doesn't happen until neck week, but for now, we're into chillier territory. a lot of 30's showing up here on the board. we're really only at the mildest spot in philadelphia at 41 degrees, and that's typically where we top off this time of year. so starting to see the trend down, been above average as of

late, every single morning, you would see some of the chill in pit burying, state college, buffalo, cleveland, that's all headed our way. that's what you start to find cropping up here, in the seven day forecast, solo mid 40's, very typical overall for early january standards. but as we look ahead to monday, actuals, those are the coldest day of the packment temperatures struggle to hit 40 monday, looks awfully chilly tuesday. check it out, guys. 36 degrees for a high. haven't seen that in quite a while. we send it back to you. >> change of pace there, katie, thank you. do have quick traffic update for you, police just cleared this accident, from i76 east near the girard avenue exit. somehow, the white mini-van you see there on your screen wound up on the metal guardrail. so good news in all of this, there were no injuries. >> well, talking sport right now, chip kelsey gone. the eagles begin the new year with one game remaining in another disappointing season. the birds were back at practice on new years eve preparing for sunday's game against the giants in north jersey. demarco murray was a big
