"eyewitness news" is taken in the middle of all of the action, happy new year i'm nicole brewer. er case off this noon. there are familiar faces in this years mummers celebration, and also a new

"eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff is live along the parade route in center city with the instrumenting, feathers, and what is going on there, alex. >> reporter: nicole we are getting a backstage view here. it is funny this is just practicing against this right now. this is a lot of action, festivities, and the frills, the costumes they just keep coming. parade route is different for this year but enthusiasm is all of the same. for the 160th time in philadelphia, the the city becomes a carnival. >> wow. >> reporter: 2016 route is new it began at 9:00 a.m. at city hall with judging at 15th and jfk and wrapping up at washington avenue. >> we come out here every year. we have a wonderful time. weather is great. >> reporter: sights and sound on broad cannot be mistaken. upwards of 10,000, women, children but lavishly dressed men strutting through the streets to ring in the new year. performers are made up of

mourn 40 clubs, divided into categories to be judged, from the fancy brigade to the comics, string band, rivalries are fierce and bragging rights are coveted. >> we have been doing this for 31 years and i will do it for 31 more if i can god willing. >> reporter: it is a satyrical take on universal institutions and royal glamour undescribable to those who are not familiar. with routes settling back, to settlers mummers tradition in philadelphia is a truly family tradition. >> nothing like it the in the world. >> we love mummers and we love philadelphia. >> well, this parade actually began earlier today with a brand new division. that was the philadelphia division, that is an increased number of hispanic, african-american performers, to show diversity and cruel willly represent a city that loves this event so much. i'm alexandria hoff, reporting live from center city, back to you. since you are in the middle of the action i need to see a little strut out there

in center city with the mummers. come on. >> reporter: i just tried to, i need the umbrella, i need to use the the knees a little bit more. >> all right. >> we will give you time to practice, thanks alex. meanwhile protesters with the black lives matter movement plan to show up the at the mummers parade this afternoon, organizers say they will gather at city hall at 1:00 to raise a awareness of police shooting at minorities. organizers are calling for better school funding, and higher minimum wages. well, temperatures are starting up new year on a bit more of the seasonal note. lets look first at the forecast with meteorologist katie fey link are live on the sky deck and i know you are all bundled up. it is kind of cold out there. >> it is when that breeze blows and it is not a particularly strong wind we are dealing with today but direction it is coming from that really matters and also the fact that these temperatures will be a lot more january-like, for what we have been experiencing as ovulate. we have a new pattern and it is definitely a cooler one. but it is quiet.

it is calm. it will stay that way. we will start off with a quick check of storm scan three which is totally empty devoid of any activity here at the the local level. we will zoom it out. heck i will zoom it out one more time. we have got snow falling, folks very light but lake enhanced. even though it is making a a beeline for us, don't worry about it. we have clouds out there right now but not a sign of things to come. we are watching high pressure instead, that is settling in the delaware valley and that will allow these clouds that are currently over our area to thin out and snow that is back over the the central pennsylvania mountains to actually just peter out completely. i don't think you have to worry about any kind of snow flakes here but you have been craving that, it will in the happen just yet. it should be setting stage if we were to have some moisture we would see snow flakes. no snow in this forecast right now. 34 degrees is what it feels like. the these are your feels like values, generally temperatures are in the 30's and lower 40's right now, but factor in that breeze you might be able to

hear through microphone and it does make it feel colder. yeah, chillies in the air and feels more like 20's and teens heading far enough inn lah land or highest terrain. what are we shooting for today we are going for a high of 44 degrees. that is still will a handfull of degrees above the average but we will call this a gut reality check for what it should be actually like here in the delaware valley this time of the year. mid to low 40's that is what you would find when talking averaging. up in the mountains it is more like mid 30's. it is just back to where we should be at this point and we are expecting as we come back to the sky deck live here those clouds to break for sunshine and it is definitely shining down brightly here. i'll tell you what it is not making it feel warmer. so winter is here for a change. >> yeah, by january. >> all right katie, thanks very much. 2016 started with a spectacular fire works show along the delaware river. >> ♪ >> families pack penns landing

for in the just one but two shows that included, 4 tons of fire works. everyone ringing in the new year with resolutions and high hopes. that right there is beverly hills high school marching band performing in london's annual new years day parade. they joined 8500 performers representing 20 countries to help mark the parade's 30th anniversary. in tel aviv a massive man hundred is underway for a gunman who opened fire inside a popular bar. two of those victims died at the hospital and at least three more wounded. police say gunman's motive is unclear. it comes amid more than three months of almost daily palestinian attacks against israeli civilians and soldiers. in duba ai fire fighters are still trying to put out fire that engulfed a 63 story luxury hotel on new years eve. that fire broke out just a few hours before the the annual fire works display. officials say four people suffered minor injuries, in that evacuation.

fire fighters have been hampered by low water pressure, the the cause of the fire is unclear, the developer of that hotel will only say it is under investigation. here locally investigators are trying to pin perth what started this house fire in burlington county, two alarm fire damaged a home on plymouth drive-in evesham township. when fire fighters arrived they found heavy flames in the back of the two story house, good news here there were no injuries. gloucester county police officer is recovering from injuries suffered in the crash overnight, it happened just before 1:30 on buck road in glassboro. the officer's cruiser was the only car involved in that crash, officer was taken to the hospital and at last check was listed in stable condition. well, coming up on cbs-3 "eyewitness news" remembering one of the stars of the hit tv show mash, actor william rodgers has died. and a legal setback for bill cosby's wife camille, we will have details on that, when we return, stay with us.

the republicans in harrisburg were fighting each other over the state budget. that's right. each other. the republican state senate passed a responsible budget that "begins" to fund education but the republican house of representatives has insisted on a budget that fails to fund education and balloons the deficit. call your legislator, tell them to pass a budget that's right for pennsylvania.

five-year old who has been missing for almost 12 hours. police tell "eyewitness news" that the the boy was last seen around 11:00 last night running in the area of south aubrey and east south streets. he was not wearing shoes, socks or a coat so if you see him, please call the police. we hate to see that. 2016 will begin with the transition of power at philadelphia city hall, after eight years in office mayor michael nutter is getting ready to leave. late last night he tweeted this picture of his office, saying, thank you philadelphia for allowing me to serve eight years as mayor of my hometown. happy, healthy, safe new year to all. incoming mayor jim kenney takes over on monday, he says he is eyeing poverty as a top issue. the in his priorities kenney includes improving the relationship between police and african americans and also reducing city jail overcrowding. kenney will be philadelphia's 99th mayor. well, bill cosby's lawyers are on the offensive after being charged with sexual assault. in an interview on cnn,

attorney pressly questioned whether this case would actually make it to trial. >> we have to big hurdles to cross and so do they. i will not give you the the the witness list for who will or will not testify, if these allegations that are now charged go all the way, to a trial stage. i don't know if we will even get there. >> cosby is accused of sexually assaulting then temple university employee at his home, at montgomery county in early 2004. he has said that the encounter was consensual. the philadelphia born comedian has kept in touch with fans on twitter throughout all of this. in a brief tweet he says friend, fans, thank you. now cosby a's wife camille just suffered a legal setback, a massachusetts judge denied her request to get out of the deposition there. that means she will have to testify in a defamation suit against her husband. seven women are suing bill cosby saying he defamed them after they accused him of sexual assault. camille cosby's deposition is scheduled for next week. a television icon of the

1970's has died. actor wayne rodgers was best known for playing trapper john macintyre on tv's mash. he returned to television often including a recurring role in the early 1990's of murder she wrote. later in life rodgers became a successful money manager and financial expert, past two months he died thursday of complication from his pneumonia. he was 82 years old. we have some breaking news into our news room this noon we have just learn that singer natalie cole has died. she won six grammys and sold millions of record, natalie, daughter of legendary singer nat king cole and one of her biggest hits was unforgettable where she accompanied her late father. natalie coal struggled with drug addiction. she underwent a kidney transplant in 2009 we are told that national the lee cole died last night and she was 65 years old. 12:13. still ahead on "eyewitness news" a traditional cold because to start the new year, polar plunge down the shore, so what is that going to be

back on "eyewitness news" the crowd gathered on a bridge in rome to watch three men, do that. one a after the the other the men jumped in the tiger's river chilly waters wearing own a speedo. i know, it is a new years tradition that stand more than 50 years in the making. yikes. closer to home these brave souls took a daring dive in the schuylkill river wearing a little bit more. "eyewitness news" at river front park in pottstown montgomery county for eighth annual polar bear plunge and

there is more. you can see these people are crazy. it is down the shore new years tradition i'm told. ocean city polar bear plunge is what you are seeing here. more than a thousand people are expect to run into the atlantic later this afternoon. ocean water temperature are around 51 degrees we're told. our vittoria woodill will be there, she might be there already but big question will she take the plunge. >> i can see her doing it. >> i think she would. she is up for that kind of thing but to know for sure tune in afternoon. she will be live down the shore on "eyewitness news" at 5:00. i can't not wait. >> you said i have done that. >> i have done a polar plunge, and, i cannot say i would do it again but they are usually for a good cause. >> that is true. the not going to happen. >> but yes, ocean water temperature around 51 degrees but typically it is at about 37. it is not that bad. you are gaining 15 extra

degrees, it is not shabby. i am not saying you want to take a bath in that but it is not terrible. i want to show you something cool. for those trying to get out and getting skiing on. we are seeing coal enough air that they can make some snow. of course we will not see any nature made snow in jack frost big boulder but carbon county pennsylvania there you have it, they are all on. they are definitely covering the slopes as we speak. so, great news for the resorts, they have been waiting for this to happen. lets go ahead and talk water temperatures as we were discussing. lower 50's. the this is well above average. typically mid to upper 30's right about now but it has been exceptionally warm as you all well know and hence, water respond to that too. it is not just air temperatures. so that is where we stan right now. we are looking at area temperatures we are talking lower 40's, upper 30's in these locations and there is a breeze out there, but we just came off of a are very, exceptional december, never

have we seen a month that every single will day was a above average. even if it is only by 3 degrees it is stale above average. we will give you a red block on this graphic. we ended up 13.7 degrees above average. that is a huge deal. this is one for record books for sure. we have flipped calendar and we are seeing snow on the map. that tells me the story grant that had snow will not make it here but chill will. behind it comes high pressure, and we will end up with quiet weather. another check of area temperature lower 40's is what the thermometer reads but feels colder with the win. it is colder in happy valley, pittsburgh and to produce light snow all down wind of those lakes. it will be fizzling by the time it reaches us. looking forward in the seven day forecast we are off to an okay start. low to mid 40's through the upcoming weekend, but, notice what happens here, by monday and tuesday is there a reenforcement of the chill, so temperatures take a hit as a result. we will only flirt with 40 we

do not hit it and then only mid 30's at best on tuesday. come wednesday we will come a little bit more here but what i love about this is the fact you don't see rain or snow in the icon. >> i know. >> definitely sunshine. >> we will take it. >> thanks, katie. many people have been happy with the warm winter we have been having but milder weather is taking a toll on ski resorts in the poconos. the katie has been mentioning that. far cry from last years snow season. many resorts are actually closed but at jack frost ski resort they open up one trail for skiers and snow borders. >> very difficulties a appointing. >> we have had tough years where it has been warm but never been this warm continuously. this is the the worst ever. >> web cams at blue mountain, cammal back, spring mountain and shawnee show snowless slopes. they lost 20 percent of business so far this season but there is some good news, colder temperatures are back and resort are hoping to make up for the slow start to the season as we saw with your

sunshine in bethlehem and every where else. we will go quickly here to a neighborhood camera and that is where sunnies shining brightly at this point. there are a lot of folks on the boardwalk enjoying day off in the first day of 2016. speaking of, we're in a new year and new pattern. the these temperatures will take a hit come monday and tuesday but we really do expect to stay just dry, for that entire time, there will be a weak front that crosses through, brings with it, certainly a reenforcement of the chill but you will not talk about wet weather. >> it has been nice timing too because we have talk about this. it the is so dreary, so much wet weather but then it cleared up in time for new year. >> lovely. >> don't you love when it works out that way. >> that is "eyewitness news" at noon i'm nicole brewer. for katie, all of us here thanks for watching.
