firefighters battling a massive fire at a golf course, we're live on that scene. good morning, it is tuesday january 5th, i'm erika von tiehl. all i can say is at least we don't ice or slick roads to deal with >> yes, the roadways are looking pretty good because, loathes, erika, it is dry, it's so cold, what i get worried about is the jens for the starting. start those early and bring extra gloves in that car, takes awhile to heat up, katie, we know it's dangerous >> you just have to bundle up adequatelyly. that really is the bottom line on days like this. we got so used to, well, you probably got so used to hearing me ad nauseam talk about how you need to bundle up adequately. last winter, we're finally getting into some of that arctic chill that we had been devoid of frankly for months now at this point. let's go ahead and take a look how it's looking outside right now. this is one of your warmest spots in live neighborhood network 17 degrees. that's one of the warmest spots. notice you also have the

northwest breeze kicking in. crystal clear as a bell right now in the live neighborhood network around the board. look at the area wind speeds. we're not talking windy blustery conditions, but it is enough of breeze. notice the wind direction, mainly out of the north and northwest. that you notice it. it's a cold wind. what that means for your windchill values is that it's going to send them plummeting, so this is at best how it feels this morning. this is what i want you to use as a guage this morning. a lot of you are into, at least single digits and positive territory right now if not the teens. but when that wind blows, this is how it feels, take a look at your region and factor it in. that's how you need to be dressing here today. it's more like it's into negative territory in most spots this morning. on storm scan it's quiet. clear, as we said and it is going to stay that way, nothing but wall wall sunshine region-wide but those temperatures, that's rough stuff. low 30's at best here in the city today. meisha? >> it sure is rough stuff.

thanks katie. for so long we're talking about warm, now we're talking about the cold. that's not good, because the roadways are still dry despite the cold temperatures 202 headlights moving in the northbound direction. this is what you're looking at. not too bad. we've seeing a steady flow starting to hit the roadways, 42 freeway, this is one of the areas i'm keeping my eye on, it's heating up quickly. you can it's looking busy. soon if this still continues we're going to be traveling -- 95 tail lights. you can see the tail lights again moving in the southbound direction, we're starting to see the brake lights go off. they're traveling a little bit less impulsive speeds when they get at the slow spots. we do have an accident here if chalfont at count line road, and we still have that accident in doylestown. reports of downed wire, root 202 north swamp road all lanes still

blocked. latest on our developing story. we've been following all morning long. a young child is safely back with his family after a frightening ordeal. the boy was asleep in a car were someone stole it from a parking lot. jan carabeo joins us in the frankford section of northeast philly with more on this. jan, good morning. >> reporter: erika, good morning. this could have ended a whole lot worse. it is frigid out here this morning. this little boy, six years old, could have been dropped off anywhere. he also has asthma and didn't have his inhaler with him. fortunately, police say he was found safe and sound, asleep through the entire thing and found still inside of that stolen car. the heat was still on. we were here at this 7-eleven in frankford early this morning when mother and son were reunited. take a look at this video, this is the 7-eleven at bridge and oxford avenue. our cameras were rolling as mother and son embraced, of course, there were a lot of hugs and tears. understandably so.

in the meantime this morning, police busy trying to track down the suspect. this all started around 2:30 here at the 7-eleven in frankford. police say the boy's stepfather went inside the store and left the 6-year-old sleeping in the back seat of a car with the car still running. that's when police say another man got in car and sped off with the boy still inside. now, police were able to find that car, they tracked it down just about 30 minutes later as it turns out, the suspect ditched it that the 4300 block of leaper street. that's about a mile away from this 7-eleven. take a listen. >> we're going to print that entire car, get dna evidence. we are now, now that we know the boy is ok and we found car, now we're going to text person who did this. >> reporter: police say there was just a lot of hard work by investigators on the scene to track down the car. the boy then was reunited with his mom about 30 minutes after that. a 60 minute ordeal for mom. everything is safe and sound. everyone is safe and sound this

morning, police are still looking for the suspect. anyone with information, they're asked to give pleas a call. live in frankford, jan carabeo, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> glad the little boy is ok. jan, thank you. also, new overnight, fire guts a chester county home but luckily the family manages to escape unharmed. you can see thick smoke there and flames billowing out of the house on the 1,000 block in kennett square around midnight. firefighters battled the flames and icy conditions. eventually at that home's roof caved in. a mustang also damaged. no word on what caused the fire. an investigation also under way on what caused this fire at the cobbs creek golf club. they battled flames, cold temperatures and low water pressure. justin finch joins us at that scene in overbrook with the latest. justin good morning. >> reporter: good morning, as you detailed, this was not an easy fire firefighters to fight.

they have been out here since last night into the overnight here morning rotating crews and spraying the side of that building with water. the fire is out for now but remains under investigation this morning. >> flames in the nighttime skies, seen rising from the roof and spilling from the sides of this cobbs creek golf course club house in the area of carting ton road and lansdowne avenue >> there's a large structure behind it. i guess that's where the golf carts make the large one story garage. there's two properties were what we were concerned about. >> reporter: firefighters were on scene just before 11:00 upon night. >> three or four rooms on the first floor and companies were inside with hand lines for about 20 minutes. and the fire took control of the walls up in the ceiling. >> reporter: inside, flames moved fast. floor by floor. outside crews hit the house with water blasts. in sub freezing temps, there were hick cups.

water pressure was low. upper darby firefighters backed philly crews with extra water hoping to bring the one alarm fire under control in under two hours, no injuries to report and though fire officials say crews are always cautious, they say this cold presents it's own challenges >> we have to be carefully way we operate on a fire. the water spraying all over, i seeing things up. we have to keep the equipment moving. in another hour, hour and a half we'll change out the troops, bring in fresh troops. it's the kind of weather completely changes the way we operate. >> reporter: you are looking will you have at fire crews continuing to douse this building. the water going right through the side of that building here again, no injuries to report this morning. the cause remains under investigation. the fire marshall was here last night and will return here later on this morning. we are told the golf carts and other golf gear that may have been spared damage. again, at this time, that

jim kenney will attend a swearing in. instead of the inaugural black tie gala. he welcomed hundreds at the convention center. raised money for the philadelphia school district. the new mayor addressed the crowd during the ceremony. >> how do you like our block party? isn't it fun? in black tie, gowns, we're good. we come from neighborhoods. we all know what it's like. >> earlier in the day, mayor kenney signed six executive orders including the creation of the city's chief diversity officer. new city council members were also sworn in. you can watch mayor kenney's entire inauguration speech on cbsphilly.com still ahead "eyewitness news" that swelled affluenza teen and his mom will both be in court. as the drama continues to unfold, family members of those involved in that horrific crash two years ago, they're now speaking out. also this.

ocean from beach california. residents are bracing for major storm that could dump as much as four inches of rain in california. storms are being fueled by this winter's el nino. experts are warning residents to be aware. meanwhile the nation's midwest continues to deal with deadly flooding, the missouri and mississippi river cystsed at an all time record. homes and businesses in that downtown area are flooded out. so far 25 people have died as a result of those floods. the mississippi is expected to lower by friday. just our west pittsburgh saw about an inch of snow yesterday. the first blast of winter was enough to delay schools and slow down your morning commute. that snow tied the city record for the latest first snowfall of the season. i just asked are we close to breaking a record for the latest snowfall? >> nope because we haven't had winters that haven't had any measurable snow at all.

what's interesting, while we have if measurable snow. there was a strong el nino just like we have right now. not to say we won't see any. there have also been strong el nino years where we end up with well above average years. in fact, back in 2010, that ended up being the snowest on record. let's take a look where the latest storm is tracking across california, heavy rain falling, eventually moves on shore obviously. it will move into the planes then what happens with it? looks as though we're going to see it eventually become a story for here. for now, high pressure is the main headline, keeping things very cold but very clear as well. you're not going to see any kind of presip in the next couple days, but i will stay cold. with that high in place, you get the northerly component. keeping it a tad breezy, not windy but the breeze is

federal authorities appear to be in no rush to end an antigovernment group's take over of an oregon wildlife preserve. the two ranchers at the center of that stand-off dwight hammond and his son steven have reported to prison. about two dozen activities seized to protest the conviction of the hammonds for allegedly setting fire to federal land. there are no hostages and no one has been hurt. a bus full of high school athletes burst into flames in new jersey and the whole thing caught on camera. 32 students were on board that bus in newark getting ready to leave for a track and field meet. their coach, who stepped out to get something from his car, saw the smoke and flames. moments later, got everyone out. the entire bus became engulfed in flames. >> i smelled the smoke and then saw it. >> i didn't want to be in the area of the debris if there was a below up >> the fire destroyed the team's equipment but not the spirit.

the so-called affluenza teen, ethan couch is expected to appear in court today in mexican for an expedition hearing. 18-year-old fled the country with his mother, tania several weeks ago. this is prosecutor's investigated whether he violated had us probation in regards to a drunk driving crash, deadly one that left four people dead. his mother will be in court today in los angeles, and this morning we're hearing from one of the victims of the crash. reporter has moreful. >> reporter: i don't really see the reason yet.

2014 leaving her drexel hill home. police say the mother of two has a history of addiction and believes she is no longer alive. over the weekend, a hiker found skeletal remains at ridley creek state park. police asked amanda family for her dental records. >> i don't think that's my baby >> there's something in you. >> that's right. there's something inside telling me it's not my baby. >> police have asked amanda's family once again for the dental records. authorities say it will take time to make positive identification. president obama is taking executive action to tighten gun control laws. under the measure background checks would be rider for guns purchased from dealers even if they're bought on line or at a gun show. the government will consider anyone who sells guns a dealer, which aims to narrow loop holes. president obama will also bring on more agents to process those checks. gun control advocates and many democrat lawmakers are hailing the move.

. a new jersey couple is accused of leaving their children in a cold suv while they gambled. it happened at pa rx casino saturday night. three children one, three and eight all found sitting in the back seat in below freezing temperatures, their parents, ebony walker and nelson are now charged with reckless endangerment and end endangering the welfare of children. >> spend the extra money and get a baby sitter. you made a hell of a gambler that day by gambling with your children's lives. in this particular case, thank god the children were not hurts investigators say the children were left in the car

more than an hour and a half. a passerby spotted them and notified security icy road led to this incredibly close call in oregon. it slid off the road. that huge truck and came to a stop within inches of an apartment complex. neighbors say they saw that tluk jackknife on a hill and spun around until it lost control on the slick road and just so lucky didn't hit the apartment building, but katie, one blessing, at least we don't slick roads, it's cold but the roads are ok. >> even though we are dealing with this arctic blast of cold air, you don't have to deal with any kind of precipitation out of this. there's a little bit of a breeze, you won't have too much frost on the windshield. you're going to need time to warm up. we have beautiful pictures that came into us. we'll take you on a tour of a couple. greg sent in the crescent moon clear sky through the overnight. you can the halo and rim right around the moon. we can show you a better shot of that where you can see the rest

worst year in her contrary to prepare for this summer's olympics. news back in the morning, see you in about ten minutes >> going to be here before you know it. nora, thank you. it's the first full week of the new year. many are working hard to keep the resolutions on track. if you're looking to improve your health in 2016, there are simple steps you can take to stick to those goals. family physician joins us now with more on that advice and there's have to stick to but there's simple things you can do to make sure we follow through. what are the simple things >> it takes about two to three weeks for any resolution to really become a habit and about six months become part of our life. we look forward to it. let's go through a checklist. >> let's do it >> the first thing, keep it realistic. if our goal is to lose 30 pounds and exercise one hour a day, seven days a week, that's not realistic. you got to go to it garage rally.

then we'll have a higher chance of success. also besides that, we want to make one change at a time. i have a to do list, i got to sleep more and eat healthyier and exercise more. don't overload. one or two things at a time that insures it helps our chance of success with that. the other thing is make -- write down our goals and share with others. if i say erika, i'm going to start doing more steps each day and walking and i text you each day. if you have family and friends involved, that helps you with success >> absolutely accountability there >> encourages you and tracks your progress. if i want to lose an inch, more steps, if we keep track or food diary, we can write down what we're doing and see how we're doing. sometimes we don't have to best day with keeping to our goals, we get sidetracked. we have internal gps, back on track. the more we try, the higher of chance of success. get back and try. >> try and try again. i think the most common resolution always to lose a few pounds. if you're trying to lose that

weight, what should you do >> food diaries. we often eat more or drink more stuff with calories than we're aware of, and there was a study that shows people who keep a food diary lose 15 percent more weight than those who don't. that's one thing to do. the other thing is after breakfast just drink water if we're thirsty. average american has 25 pounds worth of drinks with sugar in it. fruit drinks or sodas, cut back on that. and blue. think of blue. have food on a blue plate. blue is not a hunger inducing type of color. looks like food on mud. that's not too appetizing >> clever >> restaurants know that the food color, warm color, red, yellow, orange, that stimulates appetite. if you want to lose weight use a blue plate >> so many of us sit at our desks all day long, you get hunched over, trying to move more, how should we start that,

i'm going to work out one hour a day, not realistic >> it's not but if you work at a place that has stairs, ten minutes a day, take the stairs, center for disease control says if you use stairs ten minutes a day it's going to help strengthen your muscles and help you lose wait. every hour, get up for five minutes, walk around see a friend do whatever you can to walk. it's important. we can keep track of those steps but activity is very important, get up, move around, stretch looking at the dogs and cats, they do it >> first things in the morning, what's a good step to eat healthyier >> fruits and vegetables. have broccoli, add cucumber, add tomatoes, because water dense food helpful us up we're get vitamins and help us lose wait 6:52. we'll be right back

. police are searching foreman who stole a car with a six your boy sleeping inside. luckily that child has been reunited with his family overnight. jan carabeo joins us now in the frankford section of northeast philadelphia with details. we're so glad he's ok. good morning. >> reporter: that's right. erika. police are still searching for that suspect this morning. as you may fortunately. the little boy is ok.

ham hurt. police say he slept through the entire ordeal. take a look at the video. "eyewitness news" was here. cameras were rolling here at the 7-eleven on bridge street and oxford as police brought the little boy back to be reunited with his mother. there were a lot of hugs and a lot of tears. this started around 2:30 this morning here in frankford. police say the boy's 30-year-old stepfather went inside the store and left the 6-year-old sleeping in the back seat of the car with the car running. that's when police say another man got in the car and sped off with the boy still inside. police did find that car about 30 minutes later. the suspect had ditched it in the 4300 block of leaper street. that's about a mile away. now, police are dusting that car for fingerprints, looking for dna evidence. also searching for surveillance video. again, that suspect is still at large this morning. the good news is that boy is doing just fine, reunited with his mother this morning. live in frankford, jan carabeo cbs3 "eyewitness news" thank you.
