spot all about good food and family. hi, good evening i'm ukee washington. >> i'm jessica dean. we begin tonight with a push by new jersey lawmakers to raise the age for all tobacco sales and that includes e-cigarettes. >> diana rocco is in pennsauken right now with more on the proposal. diana. >> reporter: ukee and jessica, the new age would be 21 and with this new bill lawmakers are now trying to get teens to stop smoking before they start. smoking may soon be a lot harder in the state of new jersey for young adults. the legislature is now tackling a bill that would move the legal buying age from 19 to 21 years old. >> i'm very much in favor of it. >> i think it's a positive thing and it could help a lot of people quit smoking. >> not quit but not start it in the first place. >> reporter: inside sage diner in mt. laurel some of the younger diners see classmates taking less smoke break at school while others say it's about sending the right message. >> it's not good. it's not healthy. everything that we've read and

all the medical journals and all the doctors always tell you how detrimental smoking is. >> reporter: the state would lose $1 million in revenue every year on cigarette tax. >> we certainly move the drinking age from 18 to 21, um, and we've had better out comes. >> reporter: one of the bills sponsor said would save millions in health care for would be smokers who never start. >> moving it just a few more years we know that the young minds don't develop until much later, and if they adopt addictive behaviors early on in life they will continue with these sort avenue dick tiff behaviors. >> reporter: hawaii is the only other state to up the legal age to 21. debbie buzzard has been smoking since 18. >> it's a bad habit and very hard habit to quit. >> others say adults are old enough to make their own decisions. >> 21 seems old to me. >> reporter: so the bill also includes e-cigarettes and all

tobacco products. it goes to the legislature floor on monday. if it passes, it will then go to the governor's desk. we're live in pennsauken tonight diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> all right, diana. thanks. temperatures are much warmer than just a couple days ago but now wet weather is headed our way. meteorologist kate bilo is on the sky deck and kate right now pretty calm. >> right now jessica feels pretty nice out here. temperatures in the city still around 40 degrees. which is way warmer than the past couple of nights have been. it's still cold enough in the poconos though to make some snow on the slopes. let's take a look up there. jack frost big boulder nobody skiing or snowboarding at the moment but they are taking advantage of the subfreezing temperatures to really keep those snow machines going. this is the first week of the year it's been cold enough to really make any significant amount of snow in the poconos. storm scan3 shows a system headed our way take a look at the that rain empty deep south lifting in our direct. it's not going to get here until the weekend though. in the meantime clouds and temperatures on the rise.

right now still 39 in philadelphia. 39 in allentown. but it's a cold 21 in mount pocono. coming up we'll time out the rain and tell you more cold weather on the way for next week. back inside to you. >> thank you. wrong way driver jumps to his death after causing a terrible crash on the rows vessel boulevard. natasha brown at hahnemann university hospital right now in center city with how the chaos unfolded. natasha. >> reporter: well, ukee, this was a whirlwind of events prompted by one frenzied driver that injured three people and snarled traffic for at least three hours. a sea of red brake lights along one of the busiest roadways in the city at the height of rush hour, 4:00 p.m. this mile long pileup prompted by the 29-year-old driver of a chrysler 300 driving the wrong way on the roosevelt boulevard extension at ridge avenue. police say he sideswiped two cars before finally colliding head on with a it to toy camry. >> the driver of the chrysler 300 was traveling northbound the

wrong way in the southbound lane at the boulevard extension at ridge when he struck and sideswiped two vehicles that were traveling south on the extension and then had a head on collision with a third vehicle. >> reporter: 29-year-old driver tried to flee the seen by scene by taking a daring leap. >> he jumped off of the overpass on ridge avenue which is about a 30-foot high drop. >> reporter: police found the suspect severely injured. he was taken to temple university hospital. investigators say a 52 year and 60-year-old woman were rushed to hahnemann hospital. both were inside the car that was hit head on. police believe this all started as a domestic dispute in the 4800 block of germantown avenue. at some point, before the multiple collisions, the suspect's girlfriend jumped out of the car leaving her mother behind to endure the nightmare accident. >> for some reason, the girlfriend exited the front passenger seat. that's when the 29-year-old

driver took off, still with his girlfriend's mother in the back ceta high rate of speed. >> reporter: well the 52-year-old mother of the suspect's girlfriend is here at hahnemann hospital. she did suffer a hip injury. also, the 52 and 62-year-old -- 60-year-old victims that is they're here as well at hahnemann hospital with minor injuries. now, the suspect died at temple hospital just a few hours ago from his injuries. we're live at hahnemann tonight natasha brown cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> natasha, thank you. tonight authorities in south jersey are searching for two suspects connected to a robbery spree. take look at the surveillance video. police think the same suspects are hyped threes convenience stores robberies in december. two of those robberies were in blackwood. one in washington township. in all of them, the suspects were wearing masks and used a large kitchen knife. no one was injured in any of those incidents. authorities hope clues from new surveillance video will lead them to the sun began who shot a

75-year-old woman in the face on new year's eve. the gunman was driving this silver or white nissan maxima in tacony. officials say the suspect took the woman's handbag and shot her as she walked home with her groceries. the victim's daughter says her mother is recovering. vandals strike a camden county church and tonight police are searching for who did it. someone lashed out inside the sanctuary of saint lawrence church in lindenwold yesterday. smashed half dozen stain glass windows with prayer candles and several items were knock to the floor. nothing was stolen. many in the church are praying for whoever is responsible. >> just wish we had a chance to maybe help them out in any way we can. talk with them or see what's going on. see what's botting them because obviously they're angry or they're in pain or something. so we feel badly for them. >> police did manage to lift a zest fingerprints from the scene that will be sent to the lab for analysis. a new steeple now sits a top burr hole em baptist church in northeast philly.

eyewitness was there as crews used a large crane to install it today. strong winds destroyed the old staple last february. parishioners were inside the church when it collapsed during services. no one was hurt. new steeple was trucked in from kentucky. police dam cash usually capture crime. this time it captured a special delivery in new jersey. >> one, two, three, push. there you go. keep going. >> breathe, breathe, breathe g keep going. >> there we go. >> two state troopers helped deliver a baby on the garden state parkway in union county much the expectant mother and her husband were headed to the hospital when they realized they weren't going to make it they pulled over and called 911. the troopers quickly arrived and deliver the baby in five minut minutes. >> father's words out of his mouth, what is it? >> and at that point we're seeing a baby and got to look much it's a girl! >> mom and daughter are doing

just fine tonight. right now chinese stocks are off to rocky star it could be another rough day on wall street tomorrow after today tosses drastic drop. on going turmoil within the chinese mark is fueling the volatility there is concern about a down turn in china's economy and whether that weakness could have a domino effect. the dow closed bound 392 points at 16,514. thes in deck was down 150 points. s and p fell 47 points. the powerball jackpot is now $700 million and it could get even bigger by the next drawing on saturday. nobody won the 524 million-dollar jackpot last night. however in new jersey, seven, third prize winning tickets were sold that matched four white balls and the powerball. two of those tickets worth $50,000 were sold in our area. one of them in burlington township. the other in williamstown.

act of violence fuels terror fears in paris on the one year anniversary of the attack of the newspaper charlie hebdo. cell phone video shows the moments after police killed a knife wielding man outside a paris police station. authorities say the man was also wearing what turned out to be a fake suicide vest. investigators are trying to figure out the man's motive. safety inspectors in upstate new york are examining an elevator that got stuck 9900 feet under ground in assault mine.

17 workers were inside that elevate in the mine in lancing new york and it took rescue crews more than 10 hours to free them all. no one was hurt. new dietary guidelines back off on cholesterol but get tougher on sugar. new guidelines released by the obama administration today limit added sugar to no more than 10% of daily calories. meanwhile eggs get a break with updated guidelines the limit on diet cholesterol roll used to be no more than me 300 milligrams a day about two egg. that recommendation is gone. the report says teenaged boys and men eat too much protein and should cut back on eggs, meat and poultry and instead they should eat more fruits and vegetables. this weekend there will be an auction like none other than in the history of delaware county the now closed townhouse restaurant. we got a sneak peek of the things that people who dine here for generations hope to be taking home with them dave and his wife started the down house in the townhouse in 1951. business drew grew so did the number of items hanging on the

>> i'll let you eat your chicken let's talk about history. >> take us back. >> 20 years ago something really big happened here in philadelphia. you may remember. the blizzard of '96. i don't remember it. i was only like a baby. i was 13. >> choking on the chicken. >> take look at this guy shoveling out his car iconic eagles starter jacket. i posted the picture of my bills starter jacket from my childhood closet you can see that there. take a look. we had a ton of snow. 30.7-inches in fact. the kids loved it. i loved it threading down the hills the actual streets in my neighborhood. the whole city was shut down for days and days and of course it wasn't all fun and games it had a lot of economic impacts as well. and it was just a mess for people trying to get out and go to work but the kids, we loved it. take look at the blizzard of '96 how much snow it produced that dark shaded area. 20 to 30-inches of snow. i dressed to match it today as you can tell. 30.7-inches still the biggest snowstorm in philadelphia history just amazing.

now in this kind of pattern we have this wint this el nino winter you can get a storm like that. a lot of moisture and storms like to come up from the coast we haven't seen anything like that yet but keep in mind we still got a lot winter left to go. live neighbor network camera palmyra nature park 36 degrees. it is cloudy. little bit of fog out that perhaps overnight and that will increase as we head into saturday. thanks to this system which is lifting north and east bringing a lot of warm air with it. especially for january. but also bringing a lot of moisture witness and we will be dealing with rain for the vast major the of your weekend temperatures right now 39 degrees in philadelphia. that's mild. especially compared with recent nights. 30 in millville. 41 in wildwood. thine in allentown not too bad and you can see the mild air taken over the deep south. back to the mid 50s in birmingham, atlanta. nashville at 52 lifting northward. as we head through the day tomorrow don't expect to see a ton of sunshine mainly clouds but a few breaks of sun here and that a lot like today.

tomorrow is generally dry at least this first batch of showers come through about this time tomorrow night be tracking active radar a few showers here there and that lifts out. saturday not a wash out but cloudy, drizzly, it's damp and saturday night into sunday morning that all of this rain starts to lift through and we will have steady rain for awhi awhile. especially thou the first half of sunday. timing the rain scattered showers tomorrow night, saturday during the day clouds, fog, some drizzle. probably get out and get stuff done on saturday not the greatest day ever. saturday night into sunday morning steady rain and gusty winds and then things change so overnight mainly cloudy down to 31 degrees. tomorrow above average. 47. clouds a few breaks of sun. watch for that shower mainly after nightfall but take look at the warmup. we could hit 60 degrees on sunday. that may not seem impressive after the warmth in december. this is really getting toward the coldest part of the year that's a full 20 degrees above average on sunday. then the bottom falls out again. we're cold next week especially thursday a reinforcing shot high
