>> a philadelphia police patrol car riddled with bullet, after gunman ambushes an officer. the city's new police commissioner and new mayor both sworn in this week. >> one of the scariest things i've ever seen. i mean there is guy tried to execute the police officer. there are too many guns, too many guns on our streets, and i think our national government needs to do something about that. >> amazingly, the officer survived the face-to-face gun battle. we are live with the latest on this is condition. also this morning, katie tracking rain on the way, it will be a wet but a warm weekend. we'll have the details on. that will today is friday, january the eighth, good morning to you, so glad you're with us, i'm nicole brewer. getting your day start wad check on weather and traffic. in a means katie and meisha are here this morning. happy friday morning to you guys. >> you said it. >> happy friday indeed. right? rain or shine, i think you wake up on a friday, and already, you're just pep to your step. speaking of, i know we'll get

some rain this weekend, no rain this morning, which is good. roadways looking good. overnight construction moving out of the way, katie. >> good stuff. tell you what, you're right, meisha, a doesn't look as though the wet letter have any kind of major factor in your commute here today. for one thing, won't be real bright and sunny, it the too much sun glare to walt. but rain not here yet either. so at this point when we start it off with just quick peak at storm scan, all you have are hand full every clouds starting to bill owe in here, and certainly, skew some of the sunshine, but should see at least a kim of sunny breaks as the day goes on. again, rain on the way for our area. but it doesn't get here until at least later on today, and specially into tonight. but behind this storm system, guys, we eventually see another blast of arctic chill. time that out, watching the timing, basically, it is into monday, that we really start to see the trust of that. look when you start to lose colors, and you end with black hole of cold, up across portions of the maritime, i mean, you're basically talking about some excessive cold.

but we certainly see the thermometer bottom out in the region as well looking forward in the forecast. nos just yet. not too bad right now. thirty-nine the current temperature at the airport, generally mid to upper 30's everywhere else, it is colder obviously by comparison in mount pocono, but hey, if you're second the kid out to the school bus, maybe head the out to wait for bus yourself, do you want heavier coat by 8:00 a.m. it is only 38 degrees. but even here on the skydeck, not dealing with much wind at all, it is very, very light, so, what that tells you, is that it is not too harsh, it is cold enough to warrant the heavier layer, meisha, a but we should stay dry for the majority of the day, start to see the clouds building in. >> good news about it being dry today. thanks so much, katie. good morning, everyone, happy it is friday, happy you're with us, shear live look outside. where we have an accident, on the platt bridge westbound. twenty-two lanes it looks like or the right lane rather, is blocked, it could be compromising, looks like everyone squeezed over to one driveable lane. authorities see, kind of foggy out there, out of this camera shot. as you can see, certainly

causing slow downs, everyone putting on their brakes. just keep that in mine if you have to take the platt bridge any time soon. blue route headlight moving in the northbound direction, looking good, far cry from the shot that i just showed you, looking good, there boulevard headlight in the southbound direction at fox street, also another area that still is looking good at this hour, friday's tend to be little bit less in terms of traffic volume. so hopefully see that casino of progress through the morning even into the rush hour. pa turnpike eastbound, accident involving four vehicles, between street road and delaware valley. this is now moved to the shoulder. that's good news for those every in you and around the area. and west philly accident on 52nd street all clear. nicole, back over to you. >> meisha, a thanks. we do want to bring you to up date this morning. philadelphia police officer survives gun battle. investigators say, gunman ambushed that officer, while he was sitting in his marked cruiser. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch is live at penn presbyterian medical center where the new mayor and new police commissioner spoke short time ago. justin, what did they have to say? >> reporter: good morning,

they say too soon to gauge how the officer will progress, commissioner richard ross and mayor jim kenney who were at the bedside of officer jessie heartnet overnight. heartnet hit three times in his left arm. we have police radio of the moments just after. >> i'm shot. i'm bleeding heavily. >> reporter: that's officer jesse heartnet telling dispatch he's been hit and is bleeding heavily. this just second after police say he was ambushed, about 11:40 thursday night at the corner every south 06 ' and street n his cruiser approaching the intersection when police say male shooter in his 30's began walking toward the cruiser while shooting a gun. and he kept walking and kept shooting right up into the window cruiser at point blank range. he fired some 13 shots in all, so no bullet were left in his gun. officer heartnet returned fire as the suspect trying running away, but heartnet hit him at least three times allowing police to catch the man around the corner near six ' and

delancey street. weapon was fund there, as well. heartnet taken to presbyterian, the suspect over to h.u.p. meantime the mayor and commissioner spent the overnight comforting heartnet, his girlfriend and his father. >> we're happy essay life. there are too many guns, too many guns on our streets. and i think our national government needs to do something about that. >> this is dangerous, dangerous job, and everybody who takes it knows that. but when you see something like this, and i guess it is even more scary, when you think about the time spread. just a very serious reminder what these men and women have to deal with each and every day. >> officer heart net is 33 years old, he's a 18th district officer with five years on the force. essay wake, alert, on his way to recovery. and we are told as for that suspect, no word on his condition or his identification. nicole, back over to you. >> justin, thank you for that update. so glad he's okay. breaking news to passalong to you right now. two people are dead, six others injured, in a house fire in west kensington.

the two victims are a mother and her child. fire commissioner derrick sawyer is updating the media right now as we speak. this is video, just back from the scene, at fourth and cambria street. now we're told there were at least five space heaters, being used inside that home, and no working smoke detectors. aside from the two dead, there are six other injuries, including four children. >> well, starting today, more septa police officer will be wearing body cameras like the ones you see in the video. the transit agency is making the cameras part of every officer's standard issued equipment when they're on patrol. some officers started wearing the cameras during a pilot program back in july of 2014. >> well, police are look to go see if domestic dispute prompted a man to jump to his death following a wild wrong way crash on the roosevelt boulevard. police say the 29 year old driver jumped from the overpass after crashing into three cars while driving the wrong way. now, the chaos unfolded during yesterday's evening rush hour, near the ridge avenue off

ramp. >> the driver of the chrysler 300, was traveling northbound, the wrong way, in the southbound lane at the boulevard innings tension at ridge. when he struck and side-swiped two vehicles, that were traveling south on the text sean, and then had a head-on collision with a third vehicle. >> three people suffered non-life threatening injuries. >> a judge is scheduled to sentence two men in connection with a center city building collapse. prosecutors want demolition contractor griffin campbell to serve 25 to 50 years in prison. he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and other charges. excavator operator sean benchop pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. in 2013, four story brick wall collapsed killing six people and injuring a dozen other. >> well, the mother of the so-called afluenza teen is expected to be arraigned in texas, this morning, tanya couch stands accused of hindering the apprehension of fell on, before fleeing to

mexico with her son after he mission add hearing. made head lens in 2013 when sentenced to ten years probation for drunk driving cash that killed four people. he remains in mexico. well, we expect to learn more today about recent terror arrests here in the state. two iraqi refugees are in custody. as cbs news correspondent brian web reports, one of the accused is from sacramento, the other from houston. >> court documents reveal the 23 year old sacramento suspect communicated over social media with an unnamed individual living in texas back in 2013. in one exchange, the two allegedly discussed training and fighting overseas. the texas person identified as individual i, writes: i need to learn from your weapon expertise, the sacramento suspect responds: if you arrive and i am still there, i will train you. a criminal complaint unsealed thursday, accuses the sacramento man of traveling to syria from the us and back

>> one of the routes is closed, due to this rockslide. now rangers say it could be several days before that highway can be open to traffic. fortunately, no one was injured, in that rockslide at yosemite national park. >> another storm driven by el nino, sounding powerful rivers along the northern california coast. some people who wanted to see the power of the waves up close got what they wished for. at the saint maverick surround every break on the san matteo coast, tweeted while the waves

were impressive, weren't large enough to issue a call for the famed big wave riding contest. hard to believe they get in that. >> right? >> and people actually ride that. >> that's what i would say to that, because the words that i would use to describe riding a wave like that would be terrifying. >> pretty much. >> takes a certain breed to do it. >> hat off if you have that going for you. i want to take you outright again to our shot out at blue mountain. yes, the skiers are going to be rejoicing this, finally have enough chill in the air here in palmer ton, pretty much everywhere around the region, finally make enough snow. obviously not had any kind of actual nature made snow. but at least the chill is in place so that we are able to at least cover these slopes. so business is open. and ready for action here. we take you around to some of the other ski resort, and give you sense of what they've got going on now that they do have a little bit of base to work w up to 2-foot base, both at jack frost and big boulder, 12

and five trails open respectfully here, at camelback, 13 trails up open, 36-inch base goes on that way, too. blue blue mountain, nine trails currently open. here is the thing, guys, if you want to hit the slopes this weekend, you got to time it just right. we are watching storm system make its advance, primarily a rain producer, so, my advice is this. if you are lucky enough to have this friday off, get in there now. experience the slopes while you can. we eventually see some showers build in. it is all moving in from southwest to northeast, then also see some heff heavy rain build in specifically saturday overnight into sunday morning, so, what do we actually tally up here? we go through the day saturday, through the day sunday, this could be a pretty heavy dousing every rain event here, up to 2.7 inches 6 inches expected here up at mount pocono, according to this particular model. so yes, some heavy rain on the way it, might do number on some of that man-made snow up there. but, they've got the mechanics to be able to fix that here. we look forward in the forecast, though. we see the temperatures just

slow moving there. new jersey, 42 freeway northbound, looking good: as you can see, much different shot now than it was i would say about an hour ago. so you can see, volume levels certainly starting to increase on 42 freeway, 95 south at girard, i will back out of your way so you can see all of these travelers moving in the southbound direction, even here, seeing a loft tail light move out. now in the mass transit, west trenton, experiencing delays of 20 minutes, media elwyn 15 minutes, manayunk norristown 15 minutes, chestnut hill west, running new schedule starting on monday. so check your schedules on line, nicole, over to you. >> thanks, here is something you have to see. it is a snowy owl. see it flying by traffic cam in montreal. prevention transportation actually tweeted this, the snowy owl one of the official symbols of quebec, also got quite a wingspan, as you can tell, the span on this owl, estimated 5 feet. the snowy owl usually lives in the auric, but kind of cool to see him out there see at traffic cam. we'll be right

second amendment and the gun violence gripping the nation. he stood in front of supporters, critics, and some familiar faces, including gabby giffords, former representative who was shot five years ago, and her husband, retired astronaut, mark kelly. >> gabby and i are both gun owners. we take gun ownership very seriously. >> the president says he never owned a gun, and has little experience with firearms. but says his stance on guns helped manufacturers. >> i've been now president for over seven years. and gun sales don't seem to have suffered during that time. >> if anything, actually, you have helped. >> they've gone up. i've been very good for gunman ooh fact tourer. >> he said his policies make sense, but have been overly politicize dollars. >> our position is consistently mischaracterized. >> his current position, expanding backgrounds checks for gun buyer, the gun show loop hope, leaves mall sellers exempt from keeping formal records. not everyone agrees. >> the thing is that the laws that we create don't stop

philadelphia police offs officers sitting in his cruiser, gunman began shooting into the officer. the officer fired back, coming up into just couple every minutes. >> also, this morning, tracking some rain and some warmer temperatures, for this weekend, so bit of trade off as we head into the weekend. i don't know. i think i will ' take the told and the dry weather before i take the warm and wet? >> i'm kind of with you on that. because i would rather see sunshine than have to bundle up. >> yes. >> but at the same time, at least the rain coming on weekend, so maybe the timing could be worse, won't affect your typical morning rush hour or evening rush hour, but at least you have the excuse if you're lucky enough to have the weekend offer. >> yes, make some eggs and bacon, something like, that hang out on the couch. little netflix and chill.

what do you say, nicole? >> i love it. >> all right, storm scan3, very quiet for now. spec to go see the clouds currently to bill owe in get thicker with time, then eventually, there it is, the rain on the horizon, but still couple every state away. so we have some time to kill before this gets here. but what when it does get here it, likely comes tonight, and that means, that we've got few hazards specific to monroe county. so you got to go pretty far north. talking a lot now that the ski slopes are open in many spots, a loft you might be traveling up this way. so late tonight, watch for light fine freeze willing rain, maybe some possibility of snow, but would be very light coverage, less than an inch, just trace of it, and maybe thin glaze of ice out there. so it could get little slick up near say the i80 interchange for example. please use caution if you are head that way. but this is not a concern for anyone else. that monroe county spot, though, you have got winter weather advisory goes into effect later tonight. for now mid and upper 30's, later today upper 40's, and we really don't have to deal with

accident on the platt bridge, moving in the westbound direction, the far right lane compromised, maybe even more from this shot, you can see, tons of brake lights going up. trying to scoot in, and almost looks like they are making single file lane right now, that's very busy. we've been watching that for quite some time, hasn't eased any tension. delaware county looking good, where we take out the eyesore, get eye break, north 452 looking wonderful in the area. update on mass transit coming up in about ten minutes. nicole, back over to you. >> meisha, thank you. we have more on breaking news this morning, mother and child, are killed in an early morning house fire, in west kensington. flames broke out around 4:00 at fourth and cambria streets. firefighters were able to rescue six people, including four children. commissioner derrick sawyer said they found two victims on the second floor, mother had run back in to rescue that child. >> it is not a pretty site. it is not a pretty site tonight see her holding her child in her arms, trying to get back out, that's why it is

"eyewitness news" reporter justin finch is live for us at penn presbyterian medical center to bring us up to date on. that will justin? >> good morning, police commissioner richard ross says he's never seen anything like it, the apparent ambush of a philadelphia police officer while on the job. this morning, officer jesse heartnet here at presbyterian recovering from three gunshot wounds to his arm, we have police radio of the moment soon after. >> we're hearing officer heartnet telling business patch he's bleeding and hit.

ambush 11:40 thursday night at the corner of south 60 ' and sprout. heart necessary in his cruiser approaching the intersection when police say mail shooter in his 30's began walking toward him in the cruiser while shooting. they say he kept walking and shooting, shooting 13 shots in all in to the cruiser window at point blank range. officer heartnet was hit only three times, and still returned fire as the suspect tried running away. heartnet hit him at least three times and police caught that man around the corner near 60th and delancey. they also found that weapon nearby. heartnet was brought to presbyterian. suspect over to h.u.p. the commissioner said he has seen the video of that near fatal encounter. >> i just have to tell you, when you look at the video, weaver video we captured of this, this is absolutely one of the scariest things i've ever seen. i mean, this guy tried to execute the police officer. police office her no idea he was coming. it is amazing he's alive. he was shot three times in his left arm.

significant damage to his arm. he's got at least a broken arm, significant damage to his nerves, fortunately, he's awake, he was coherent, he is okay. >> this morning, all signs are pointing to recovery, all be it possibly a long one, police keeping presence here at presbyterian, officer heart net is 33 years old, 18th district officer with five years experience on the force. as for that shooter, no word on his name or his condition at this time. nicole, back over you. >> justin, you said it, he fought for his live and he won. thank you. >> the minimum age to buy a pack of cigarettes in other tobacco products may be going up in new jersey. assembly panel has voted for bill to raise the age from 19 to 21. now, it is already cleared the senate. some people say they're old enough to make their own decision, one of the bill sponsors say it would save millions of dollars in healthcare for would be smokers who don't start. >> we know that the young minds don't develop so much

later. and if they adopt addictive behaviors early on in life, then they will continue with these sort after dick tiff behaviors. >> i guess it is good for people to not start because it is hard to stop once you start. but i do think it is a little weird that you can, you know, 21 just seems old to me. >> hawaii is the only state to raise the legal age of tobacco sales to 21. well, grab the skis and the snow boards, many of the ski resorts in our area are now open for business. and if you are a beginner, no problem. one local resort is taking part in a big lesson today in fact they are hoping to set an up in record. some other resorts, hopefully breaking word record just as far as how many people come out and thankfully we are able to come out right now after that mild december, now in january, everyone wants to learn, everyone wants to brush up on their skills, sheers here, an instructor here at blue mountain. what do people expect if they want it get on the skis and on the snow boards and have some fun? >> come on out, world lesson happening at 10:00. we hope people will come out at 9:00 and still participate. if you miss it, no problem, we runs lessons all the time. they're continuous on the weekends, would he run them on the hour during the week, also other packages, women's group that comes out wednesdays, men's group that comes out. we have some kids with special olympics that participate, my son raring to go, very excited to see that. >> little something for everybody, dig, snow boarding, tubing, and i've been getting personal lesson. >> and beautiful new restaurant fairly new, every table has a view. >> gorgeous. talk about being out hereby yourself, that's awe s i learned the basics in the last

>> absolutely. we won't see heck of a lot of sunshine out there, nicole, but will stay dry the majority of the day. this is a day of transition for us, we start to see storm system making its approach. so we check in first, for most, with eyewitness weather watchers. a lot more observations to show you. going, this way we can see it, little bit easier format here. gilbertsville, eileen checks in at 33, kyle in mat borough, 36, lynn has got 37, phil, 36, in philly wilmington and lawrenceville, all around the map for this morning, dawn in downingtown at 36 degrees. in dover, 40, and the list goes on here. you can see where we're at. generally mid upper 30's what we have been finding, around the region, thus far this morning. now, that said, we are going to actually see the temperatures continue their climb in the next couple of days. to the point that you're not going to find much in the way of any wintery weather, at least, nothing major. if you want the man-made snow, they are definately making it up in the poconos right now. otherwise, only going to find rainout of this event.

which we'll discuss. outside we go to palmyra cove nature park, little bit of skewed skyline for us, here, is liberty place, smack dab in the center, little bit more difficult to make it out this morning because of the clouds. thankfully not too low to the ground, do not deal with visibility issues. meantime there is same time of day, say, in july, we would have gorgeous sunrise perhaps. or we would at least see some light of day. but seeing that sun come up, thankfully, at least, earlier and earlier, and the sunset later and later. so days getting longer and longer, as a result, but, you know, still seeing that sun go dunn before 5:00 p.m. that makes it difficult. you know? but certainly, as we gain around a minute of daylight every single day, it adds up with time. so getting there. now that we pass that winter solsus. meanwhile, nice wide zoom. here is the storm in question, obviously still the leading edge of the precipitation still way too far to have any issue here, but i would say even as early as late this afternoon, especially tonight, we will start to see wet weather building in across the
