washington. i'm jessica dean. we have three reporters working this story tonight, lets begin with walt hunter at the philadelphia police headquarters and we have learn that the suspect recently traveled to the middle east. >> reporter: that is right, jessica. fbi is playing a much expanded role in this investigation, according to our sources. sources telling cbs news that the suspect, traveled to cairo and saudi arabia back in 2011 and 2012, those sources also telling cbs news that he may have been radicalized while behind bars, serving prison time, after prior convictions, for prior crimes. meanwhile the first we all knew of this violent incident came in the moments before midnight, the officer's voice, calling for help. >> shots fired, shots fired, i'm shot. i'm bleeding helpful willly. >> reporter: with the wounded officer desperately calling for help the flash from the must will of the gun police say shows the suspect opening fire, and then continuing to pump bullets into the the

patrol car. ambushing, and wounding officer jesse hartnett as he trove near 60th and spruce streets. >> he just started firing with one aim and one aim only to kill him. >> reporter: moving way the picture shows the suspect continuing to fire as hartnett, with three bullets in his now disable left arm, jumps from his car, chasing and shooting the the suspect, who was then quickly a arrested by backup officer. >> i cannot say enough for his bravery, and in how he conduct himself. i mean i really can't. >> reporter: suspect identify by police as 30 year-old edward archer of yah den following hospital treatment allegedly confessed why he tried to kill the officer. >> he stated that he follows allah and that is yes was called upon to do this. >> reporter: police say beyond the confession, they are not prepared to say if archer, in fact, had known ties to any organization, or other suspects. in no way, shape or form does anyone believe that islam or

teaching of the islam has anything to do with what you have seen on that screen. that is abhorrent, it is just terrible. >> reporter: finally special agent in charge of the fbi in philadelphia, bill sweeney, declined comment on reporters questions about whether the the suspect, might have traveled to cairo, back in 2013, or had any incriminating materials in his home. >> we won't confirm that for a variety of reasons but one is so we don't let folks that were probably, or maybe dealt in the past know what we know. >> reporter: the police commissioner says the gun a 9-millimeter allegedly used to shoot officer hartnett had been in fact stolen from a philadelphia police officer back in 2012. how it got into the suspect's hand not yet known and finally sources tell me that the officer faces a long, painful road to recovery, doctors expected to have to perform many surgeries, so he cannery gain the use of of his arm, and his hand. we will have much more on this developing story when we join

you at 6:00 live from police headquarters i'm walt hunter for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> walt, thanks very much. to that and officer is being treated at penn presbyterian medical center, our rahel solomon is live, and continues our team coverage, rahel. >> reporter: well, jessica all day we have seen philadelphia a police officer coming in and out of penn presbyterian. many people, that i spoke to some of the officers briefly saying that, of course, they are disturbed by what happened but also a lot of people tonight just in shock and relieved that somehow he survived this shooting and now a appears to be on his way to recovery. >> i'm very proud of him. he is a wonderful person. >> reporter: holding back tears robert hartnett shares word he said to his wounded son officer jesse hartnett. police say the the three three-year old was shot three times late thursday night in an ambush. >> shots fired, shots fired. i'm bleeding heavily. >> all cars stand by we have an officer shot. >> reporter: crews rush hartnett to penn presbyterian

where he is listed in stable condition. philadelphia police say he will likely have to undergo more surgery. >> it will be a long day, as i said, i will go back, get the mother and coming back. >> reporter: hartnett an east lansdowne delaware county native had been with philadelphia police for five years. before that east lansdowne police say he served there for about a year. he also served on the u.s. coastguard from 2001 through 2008, his father, says hartnett is a strong man. >> he really came up a tough road, he is a tough guy, and excellent philadelphia police officer. >> reporter: in no time was that made clearer then thursday night. if you have learned a lot today about officer hartnett. we just heard from his family. coming up at 6:00 we will hear from his collogues, commissioner ross describing how his collogues described him including a incredible act of of kindness while on duty. we will have that part of the story coming up at 6:00 but for now reporting live ra hell solomon for cbs-3 "eyewitness news".

>> rahel thank you. authorities are executing search warrants in delaware county and west philadelphia as they work to learn more about the suspect. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco is live in yah den with that part of the story tonight, diana? >> reporter: jessica, tonight we're learning that edward archer floated back and forth between several residents, and one here in yah den where the the atf, fbi and various police agencies had been on the scene throughout the the day conducting a search warrant. we just saw them removing boxes from the house at 409 south mapel street. thinks believed to be archer's mother a's house. neighbors say they saw him here quite a bit over summer playing football in the yard with kid sometimes dressed in muslim dress. family members were standing outside as police, execute that had warrant. mayor says archer was known to them and had been arrested several times for weapons and assault charges. he was due back in court next week here. thinks one of the three addresses he used, the other one was in chester county and,

of course, at the 61st and pine where a search warrant was executed, early this afternoon. possibly archer's grandmother a's home. sources tell "eyewitness news" archer had key on him as he was trying to make his way back to that home, after the the shooting, when he was caught. the here's what neighbors had to say tonight. >> i basically was shocked when they said, somebody from yah den. i was a little surprised when they said it was him. i was really sad. so, you know, you could not a associate any characteristic about it other than he would come and go. >> investigators have been on the scene for several hours and they have just started to remove boxes from the the house, no worth on what might be inside those boxes, but it is all part of the early stages of this investigation, we will have much more on this, coming up, at 6:00 o'clock. live from yah den delaware county, i'm diana rocco for

cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thanks, diane a be sure to stay with cbs for for latest on the ambush of officer jesse hartnett. when we're not on tv get latest any time at cbs philly.com. it was also a close call for a boston police officer shot in the line of duty. up investigators say a convicted drug dealer shot the plainclothes officer in the leg during a traffic stop in dorchester this morning. he is expect to recover. right now suspect is in custody. the officer is a nine year veteran assigned to the drug control unit. wound pad state trooper alex douglass will attend president obama's state of the union address on tuesday. authorities say douglass was ambushed by shooting suspect eric frein outside blooming grove barracks in 2014. another trooper corporal brian dick son was kill. trooper douglass will be the the guest of the patrick toomey. he was captured after a 48 day machine hunt. more septa police officers are getting fitted with body cameras as part of the standard issue equip: septa

say officers will activate the the cameras while on patrol. the many of been receiving training and wearing the technology since the new year he again. some started wearing cameras during a pilot program last year. a judge rescheduled bill cosby's prelimb nanny hearing on sexual assault charges in montgomery county. january 14th hearing is now set for february 2nd at the county courthouse in norristown. the cosby is charged with assaulting a former temple university basketball coach in his elkins park mansion in 2004. more than 50 women have come forward claiming cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them. cosby has denied any wrongdoing. the. the stock market closes out its worse week sips 2011. it it was another down day for the markets today, investors have been rattled by concerns over slow downs in china's economy, and plunging oil prices. a strong jobs report was not enough to stem the the downward tides. the the dow jones finished

we continue to follow investigation in the ambush of a philadelphia police officer. >> officer jesse hartnett is recovering at penn presbyterian medical center. investigators say he was shot three times in the arm at point blank range by this man 30 year-old edward archer of yah den. arch's ledgely confessed to the attack and pledge his alliance to islam. the sources tell cbs news that archer traveled to egypt and saudi arabia in the last five years. contractor quick in the deadly 2013 center city building collapse at 22nd and market learn his fate today. he apologized to the victims and family before being sentenced. reporter steve towa of our sister station kyw news radio was in the courtroom. >> reporter: before he was sentenced griffin campbell told the judge he asked himself and god what to say to the families. in his words i asked god to touch their hearts and ease their pain saying tragedy shocked the city to the core,

judge glenn brownson sentenced 51 year-old campbell to 15 to 30 years in prison. assistant d.a., jennifer selber say campbell repeatedly took shortcuts at the job site. >> there was litany of decisions made by the defendant that was in exchange of trying to pad his pockets verse doing things safely and he was rolling d ice each time. >> reporter: at trial jury cleared campbell of the most serious third degree murder charges but convicted him of six counts of involuntary manslaughter, multiple counts of recklessly endanger another person, aggravated assault and causing a catastrophe. william hobson maintain campbell was fall guy for higher ups involved with the project who were not charged. >> the only two people quick of this horrible tragedy had two things in common: they are black and they are from north philadelphia everybody who is white and got money and got contacts has got a pass. >> reporter: campbell's equipment operator hundred

shawn benschop who pleaded guilty and testified at trial received a sentence half as long as campbell. judge sentenced him to seven and a half to 15 years in prison. steve towa for kyw news radio for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". two iraqi refugees a arrested on terrorism charge's period in federal court today. the authorities say 23 year-old aal-jayab travel to syria to fight with terrorist before returning to the u.s. twenty-four year-old omar al-hardon is charged with providing material support to isis. >> they clearly didn't let, u.s. authorities admit to what he was doing and this is one of the great challenges of the foreign fighter problem. >> federal officials say that there are no signs that the men were plotting an attack in america but their investigation was cut short when news of the chase was leak. newly released batch of e-mails from hillly clinton's personal account during her tenure as secretary of state includes 66 that are now marked classified. the the state department says

that one of them is now considered, secret. clinton has repeat thely stated he did not send or receive classified material on her personal account. the state department says that the e-mails in question were not labeled class fight at the time, that they were sent. new diet guidelines announced just yet have have already triggered an avalanche of criticism. guidelines has some broad recommendations, more fruits, vegetables, less sugar and limited saturated fats but some experts say that the problem is the the recommendations door vague. for example instead of avoiding sewed at guidelines say less than 10 percent of calories should come from added sugars. instead of eat less meat the recommendations say less than 10 percent of your diet should come from saturated fats. >> there is no direct messaging in the diet guidelines, that says don't eat junk food, don't eat processed food, don't eat meat, don't drink soda. >> one physicians group is suing the government claiming

the egg industry trying to weaken warnings about cholesterol. usda denies that allegation and said that the process that created the guidelines was robust, and transparent. our local restaurants being honored with their ingredients, 11th graders at spring ferry charter school in center city are taking a closer look. they have teamed up with bio technology firm, to test sushi samples from ten philadelphia restaurants. they wanted to find out is it really tuna in that dish or a popular tuna substitute. >> it is interesting to see what we're eating, and so we don't even know what we're eating, it is important to know if we're consuming what we're buying. >> this experiment was just quick test to continuing for common fishery placements and more extensive testing will be done later. >> lauren joins with us your forecast and watching rain moving this way. >> more so moving in the second half of the weekend. the it will get very mild. if you like mild temperatures that winter warmth will return for us.

talking about some 60's as we head into sunday after that bitter cold start to our week. it will end up on a warm note the but we have more cold air in the forecast. it is january but for right now 42 degrees doesn't feel so bad in center city philadelphia a darkness falling as we get a a live look on sky cam three the low cloud, still in place, not much of the breeze though wind speed around 3 miles per hour, so no wind chills in pack and didn't feel too shabby 20 day, 42 degrees, current in philadelphia, upper 30's in the lehigh valley, close to the freezing mark in mount pocono. temperatures fairly mild as far as january standards down the shore right now, where we're in the low to mid 40's but with that temperature close to freezing in mount pocono we have a winter weather advisory in effect overnight tonight until 9:00 o'clock tomorrow morning for monroe, carbon, northampton counties as we could see freezing rain, some periods of snow, but it will be patchy in nature, not widespread we are expecting minimal accumulations, perhaps a trace of ice, dusting of

snowfall as a result from this wintry weather but of course that could make conditions very slick and slippery, on the roadways and on the sidewalks, as well, so if you are out and about traveling this evening, and early tomorrow in the poconos, we will take caution with some of those conditions and storm scan three showing us some of that moisture up wind, heavier moisture toward the western part of the pennsylvania, we could see a few showers, sneak in overnight tonight, in part of the delaware valley but the the best chance of precipitation will be north and west of the city. overnight tonight calling it an isolated shower, cloudy conditions, heading out without umbrella, you will be all right, 38 degrees the overnight low. heading in the the day tomorrow very mild daze 52 degrees, light wind speeds but it will come with the low clouds, foggy conditions, even that dense fog, drizzle as well and a few light showers as we look at the first part of the day. future weather will show us that mainly dry during the evening hours and there is that chance of patchy, freezing rain, some right snow showers as we look up toward mount pocono more in the way of liquid precipitation

looking toward lehigh valley, later this evening. tomorrow morning a few isolated showers, in and around the the area, to the 9:00 o'clock hour, mainly dry heading in the afternoon but again we could see that fog, have a mist, drizzly conditions for the daze tomorrow and then as we head into sunday we are going to be dry at least starting the early morning hours but then as we head toward the 7:00 o'clock hour 8:00 o'clock hour some areas of heavy rainfall, building in and check out those orange and reds. this is again for prior to lunchtime on sunday, so we could see a few residual showers as we head in the a afternoon hours on sunday but first half of sunday, is going to be very, very foggy and for tomorrow, mainly just watching out for that drizzle, foggy conditions, cloudy, high temperatures both mild in the lower 50's and up in the lower 60's on sunday. 62 degrees. our record high temperature is 69. so not too far off of that, and on monday sunshine returns but along with some more winter-like air, 38 degrees, on monday, 41 on tuesday and

arm. pregnant mother runs into her burning home to try to rescue her son but that fire was just too strong and it proved to be deadly. fire investigators say five space heaters were running inside the home at the time of that fire. eye witt the necessary news reporter alexandria hoff has the latest on the investigation. >> it was really hot, i mean we woke up to, you know, screams. >> reporter: at first elizabeth perez was at among six others able to make it out of the burning home, until she thought of him. >> elizabeth, elizabeth. i hood out window and saw fire. >> reporter: at eight months pregnant elizabeth ran back inside of the home in the 2800 block of north fourth street, in hopes of saving her two-year old son, nathanal. neither of them made it out. fire fighters say they found the boy's body in his mother's arms. unaudible. >> reporter: fire had consume the home by 4:00 a.m. just the the fact that it was

started by one of the five space heaters used improperly inside the home, proving deadly due to lack of any smoke detectors. that is why nearly 12 hours later the the fire department returned to the street, like several others, this woman thought her smoke detectors were working fine. and then admit that had they likely did not. she gladly invited crews inside. >> everybody should have smoke alarms in their house and everybody should have a home escape plan to get out of the house if there is a fire. >> reporter: these are rules that neighbors say they will abide by but never run back in the building is one parents refuse to accept. >> you know, you try the life of the person that you love. >> reporter: fire commissioner sawyer says in 205 the city lost 12 people, to fires, and he says that losing two so early on in this new year just dealt a blow to 2016. reporting from west kensington

i'mal sand that hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". one of the most dangerous drug traffickers is recaptured after being on the run for six months. joaquin el chapo guzman was arrested. el chapo has been on the run since his tunnel escape in july from a maximum security prison in mexico. the authorities believe his cartel is the the number one supplier of heroin, cocaine, and marijuana to the united states. well, president obama vetoes legislation that would repeal the affordable care act and cut federal funding for plant parent hide. it is pushed by republican lawmakers since 2010 when the president signed the health care program into law. the the buildings back to the republican led congress which does not have the the votes to override the veto. new version of the hitler's manifesto is back on book shelves, it went on sales in germany for the first time since the end of world war two. a team of historians and scholars spent years preparing this updated addition.

a controversial piece of history, and once again, it is on sale in german book shops. critics of the decision to preprint hitler's manifesto worry it could refuel anti sematic sentiment. this german resident says that to find that in the book stores i just can't imagine it. but book's new publishers say the book can teach valuable lessons. hitler's work required an evaluation, and critique, says the project's leader. it is german for my struggle is considered hitler's rough draft of the hollow cost. he wrote the tirade in the 1920's, after a 40's the the government took control of the text and stopped printing it. but after 70 years, the copy right expired, and it has been given okay for republishing with some key revisions. the german government will only allow a digses meaning

each comment commentary critical of the hitler ranting. it comes as europe grabbles with the migrant christ that is has fueled anti immigrant sentiment. some jews in israel are ambivalent about the reprinting. >> it is kind of impossible to control speech. i'm not sure we should. >> reporter: hitler's original manifesto is widely available in the germany's second handbook stores. scholars say new version offers crucial context that shed light on a horrific past, so history cannot repeat itself. hitler's manifesto was originally printed in 1925, eight years before hitler came to power. it sold more than 12 million copies, until 1945, and today's reprint cost about $65. at a school in way republican presidential candidate ben carson reminisced about challenges he faced in the fifth grade where he was considered the worst student in his class. carson then inadvertently put one student on the spot.
