name of islam. >> he has confessed to committing this cowardly act in the name of islam. according to him he believed that the police defend laws that are contrary to the teachings of the quran. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news that the archer traveled to the middle east including trips to cairo and saudi arabia in 2011 and 2012 and sources tell cbs news that while in prison the fbi is investigating he may have converted to islam. bill screen i, special agent in charge of the bro's philadelphia office declined to answer questions about what the fbi might know. >> i won't confirm that for a variety of reasons but one is so we don't let folks who were probably or maybe know what we know. >> this is a criminal with a stolen gun who tried to kill one of our officers. it has nothing to do were being a a muslim or following islamic faith. >> police commissioner says gun allegedly used to shoot the officer, in fact, was stolen from a police officer

in 2012. finally, on monday at 2:00 o'clock the the suspect was scheduled to be sentenced in delaware county, on prior criminal convictions. as of right now it is not known if the timing of that sentencing played any role in the a alleged attack. live from police headquarters, i'm walt hunter for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> walt, thank you. local federal investigators are executing warrants as they hunt for evidence in the shooting. we will get more from "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco in yah den, delaware county, diana. >> reporter: ukee, edward arch aer is believed to have floated back and forth between residents here on mapel street in yah den and at least two others. tonight investigators have just finished, conducting a search on this home, belonging to archer's mother. lawmakers say they often saw him coming and going, they had no reason to believe he was radicalized. investigators in white suits pulling evidence from the yah den home of edward archer a's

mother, one of his three known addresses. atf, fbi and other police agent the cyst spent hours serving a search warrant. neighbors say they often saw archer coming and going. >> sometimes he would play with the kids, they might play football, there was something. >> reporter: unaudible. >> sometimes but most of the time he haddon regular stuff. >> reporter: yah den's mayor says archer had recently been released from prison and was known to them for drug and weapons charges. >> according to my police chief he has a long criminal record. he ace long rap sheet. so he has been on our radar screen and i believe he was scheduled to be in our county court next week. >> reporter: earlier investigators were the at 61st and pioneer the shooting scene in philadelphia, and a apartment belonging to the archer family, possibly his grandmother. archer was believed to be headed thereafter the alleged shooting, and sources say a key to the apartment was found on him when he was caught.

and investigators did remove at least two boxes of evidence from this home tonight, no word on what was inside, those sources tell "eyewitness news" that archer also, frequented a residents in chester. we will have much more coming up on "eyewitness news" tonight at ten and 11. live from yah den delaware county, i'm diana rocco for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". officer hartnett is being treated tonight at penn presbyterian medical center and he faces a lengthy recovery. rahel solomon is live at the hospital to continue our team coverage, rahel. >> reporter: jessica, police say of course this officer was just sitting in his car when he was ambushed and shot several times. he was on duty, when we learned today it is a job he always wanted to do. >> he continued right on into the academy. >> reporter: robert heart necessary says his son grew up wanting to be a police officer. thursday night the five-year veteran of the philadelphia police department faced every

officer's worst fear. >> shots fire, shots fired. i'm shot. i'm bleeding heavily. >> reporter: driving through 60th and spruce in west philadelphia police say he was ambush, shot at more than a dozen times and then struck three times in the arm. >> again the whole culmination of things, and everything involved in this, it is just both confounding and astonishing that he was able to escape it like this. >> reporter: before joining philadelphia police hartnett served on the east lansdowne police force for a year. the police chief there tells me he was a great officer, well like in the community and continued to say i cannot say enough good things about him. philadelphia a police commissioner richard ross added he too had only heard good things. >> i just had a discussion with the vice-president of the fop and everyone says that in addition to the acts of bravery that was demonstrated here that he was a compassionate the police officer in that even as an individual he arrested not long ago for narcotics he stopped and got food for that

individual's son. very person he arrested. >> reporter: an act of kindness where it wasn't necessarily required, possibly true reason he wanted to be an officer, something many are hoping once he recovers he can get back to doing. officer hartnett is listed in stable condition, we're told he likely has more surgeries ahead of him but we spoke to his father today and he said he is a a tough guy. reporting live, rahel solomon for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". stay with us as we continue to learn more about the injured officer and the suspect gunman, we will have the latest tonight on "eyewitness news" at 11:00 and anytime at cbs philly.com. officials say space heaters may have sparked a fire that killed a pregnant mother and her son in west kensington. fire broke out around 4:00 this morning in the 2800 block of north fourth street. fire officials tell us that elizabeth perez who was eight months pregnant got out safely and then went back inside to rescue two-year old nathanal but they both became trapped by the fire.

official says five space heaters were running at the time of the fire and home did not have any working smoke detectors. oppressive odor. >> reporter: for more than a year people living near landfill have been suing its operator waste managerment to get relief. now some are about to cash n company has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit which includes spending $600,000 on deodorant equipment and creating a 1.4 million-dollar compensation fund for residents. >> that is financial compensation for the fact that they had to experience these odors. the odors interfered with their ability to use and enjoy their homes. >> reporter: waste management said waste management is pleased that it resolves this issue. waste management remains committed to operating as a good neighbor. 9600 households eligible to receive money. depending how much people sign on the lawsuit the pay off could range from $100 to several hundred dollars. according to the attorney representing the class action lawsuit, the the settlement the money is only to pay people for dealing with the smell of the link next to the landfill. it wouldn't stop them, some
