first a quick tour of the penn lab and vice-president is part of the round table discussion, with doctors and researchers at penn's abramson cancer center. >> my family has been touched by cancer, some family members have survived, and some have not. >> our research is a at cutting edge and we're thrilled that the vice-president is here to see the work. >> reporter: these labs at penn are developing a number of cancer treatments, one of the most promising immuno therapy where a patient's cells are engineered to attack their cancer. >> we're beginning to see in some patients, treated with our first immuno therapy drugs that that is possible, for to us cure their cancer. >> reporter: but there was nothing to save the vice-president's son beau who died at 46 from brain cancer. instead of running for president joe biden says he wanted to leave the mission to cure cancer. >> it is a devastating disease. now we're fortunate that we have begun to see through research, and some new therapies, the the a ability to lower the impact of cancer in this country.

"eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter joins us on the expressway at city avenue to tell you more about a possible new lane of traffic, walt. >> reporter: well, ukee do the people crawling behind me here along the the expressway, the drivers, that opened shoulder lane looks like an oasis in the traffic desert, of course, you cannot drive on it the now. you'll get a ticket from the state police but in the future

penndot says they might just opened up those shoulders for driving as a way of easing, conn gets. facing seemingly endless jams on the schuylkill expressway, who among us, hasn't gaysed longly at the traffic free shoulders of the road, thinking if only it were legal to drive there. well, penndot now says that some day, that just might happen. >> one aspect of it being given very serious consideration, and an examination under this study is use of the shoulders. >> reporter: penndot study now underway aimed at easing traffic, between routes one and 202, could mean, shoulders expanded in to a third lane in both directions, for at least, part of the day. >> there is some serious concerns that would have to be looked at and addressed during engineering phase. >> reporter: but before anyone heads to the shoulders, penndot cautions that they will have to be expanded, from eight to 10 feet to 12 feet, a

on wednesday's service disruption. hundreds packed the station while crews worked to remove a fallen tree near tracks. when patco opened up the turn style exits to relieve crowds, some riders did in the use their freedom card to tap out of the system. when they got back on the train thursday morning the system thought that they were fare evaders and charged them an extra fare. >> wilmington woman is run down by an out of control car as she sat in the chair inside her own home this happened around 7:30 this morning on colfax court. the seven three-year old victim was pinned under the car for a half an hour and suffered possible fractures to her ankles. the 60 year-old driver who is rick tim's neighbor was able to get out on their own but she was cited for reckless driving. the investigation is still ongoing. about 20 people are displaced after a large fire ripped through a section of the row homes in burlington city, new jersey. three people, including two children suffered minor injuries. authorities say that four hems were damaged after the fire

broke out around 5:30 this morning on the 300 block of st. mary's street, red cross is there on the scene and helping families, no word on what cause that had fire. a five two-year old woman was hurt during this roll over crash in northeast philadelphia. it happened just after 10:00 this morning on roosevelt boulevard at tyson avenue. the southbound inner lanes had to be closed as crews cleaned up the crash, which is also under investigation. ten people were arrested in connection to the large scale drug traffic going operation in trenton. the here's the suspects, they were rounded up on wednesday during an execution of search warrants in the trenton area. authorities say more than 1.3 million-dollar worth of drugs, mostly heroin was confiscated. citizen complaints helped kick off this two year investigation. >> i get complaints in my office on a daily basis, this is one that definitely the crew likes, thanks to the efforts of the detectives, and agents, who are part of this

and it is just blossomed. >> a double barrel shotgun and five luxury cars were also seized during the drug bustt. it is a case that has captain rated the nation, many are debating whether or not steven avery is guilt of murder after his case was widely viewed on the documentary series making a murderer. we saw major players on doctor phil. now "eyewitness news" reporter rahel solomon has more about this controversial case, from a local expert. more like hit documentary, making a murderer, the netflix series now making headlines, involves a wisconsin man steven avery as he is quick of raping and assaulting a woman. he spent 18 years in prison until another crime. the just years later he is accused of a brutal murder of another woman. do prosecutors have wrong guy again? many fascinated around the world seem to think so, jurors did not. >> there thinks kind of

horrendous crime, it is difficult for them to say okay, we will let it go. someone has to be punish. >> reporter: philadelphia defense attorney nino tenari that many captivated by the series, he found the state's case to be a problematic. very agency involve in the initial rape and assault investigation, played a large role in the murder investigation. >> the best way that incurred, and, without any kind of controversy, was to exclude the other counties, and they didn't do that. >> reporter: critics say the series left out incriminating evidence and in a interview with cbs doctor phil show, kenneth peterson maintained the inn telling grit of the investigation. >> he is exactly where he should belong and he should be there as long as he lives. >> but not everyone is as sure. >> it touches people because they do want fairness and just advertise and they want to make sure things are done right. >> reporter: many legal experts say despite all this

attention and uproar that has been created by the series, chances of steven avery getting a new trial are slim and would require newly discovered evidence, reporting from center city rahel solomon for cbs-3 "eyewitness news" good a lot of people talking about it, no doubt about that. in other news stocks plumeted on wall street on news oil prices dropped below $30 a barrel. u.s. industrial production dropped for third straight month and retail sales slipped in september. all this equals worst two week opening for a year ever. here's are the numbers, dow jones was down 390-point to close just under 16,000. the nasdaq dropped more than 126 points and s and p lost 41 points. search crews are standing waters off hawaii's coast for any signs of two marine helicopters and dozen crew you members on board. the 13-foot waves and cloudy conditions are complicate ago this search that began overnight. helicopters collided during a training exercise late last night. rescue teams, spotted a debris field and a empty life raft, but there was no immediate

one person is blaine dead and five others patients are in the hospital after something went wrong during a drug trial. the company behind it all, has ties to new jersey.

medics, rushed six research volunteers to this hospital, in western france, after they became, violently ill, while taking part in the drug study. prosecutors have launched an investigation. >> the french health minister says that 90 people took part in the experimental testing that involved varying doses of an oral painkiller. the hospital says that one person is brain dead, and three others have damaged that may not be refersable. health officials say it is rare for people to get sick when testing new drugs because researchers usually start with the lower possible dose after extensive testing on animals. the botched drug tests happened at bio trail laboratory in the city of ren. the french company specializes in clinical studies. bio trial web site says it has 25 years of experience, with clinical trials, and french company also has offices in london, and newark, new jersey. so far there is no name for that particular drug, that was

being tested. also on the healthwatch tonight, the cdc is considering a travel warning for pregnant woman in certain region of the caribbean central and south america. the the concern is over mosquito born z eka virus. it can cause neurological disease in babies causing them to have abnormally small heads which can lead to death. there is no vaccine and in medicine to treat it, just yet. very disturbing video posted by video blogger that seemed to show firsthand danger of hoverboards. hoverboard seems to spontaneously buts, smoking, then catching fire, as the camera rolled and the guy jumps off the flaming board. bloger says he was testing out a new hoverboard and recording it when this all happen. he says, hoverboard didn't work so he kept trying until it exploded. amazon has stopped selling the hoverboard and some college campuses have have band them. a short time ago, a tennessee couple came forward to claim their share off the record breaking power ball jackpot. lottery officials, presented

in his own word actor sean penn sits down for one on one with cbs anchor charlie rose about his interview with mexican drug lord joachim el chapo guzman. "eyewitness news" continues at 5:30. good evening, i'm ukee washington. i'm jessica dean. penn's interview helped lead to guzman's recapture. it is an outcome that the actor says is far from the truth. kenneth craig has a preview of sunday's 60 minutes.

cleve. >> reporter: ukee, one of the programs announced this week means two years of college for free, and work place experience, right through going with gloucester county with rowan college of gloucester county. another program will help get a degree from a four year degree, less than a cost of one semester of many colleges. >> we're pricing young people out of it. >> reporter: in the two years since gloucester county college partnered with rowan university to be rowan college at gloucester county, two word are already on frank keithing's mine, quality and afford built. >> now student are looking a at us that never looked at us before. >> reporter: this week rowan college announced two initiatives that might make the ask much more appealing, then a high priced university. three plus one program allows students to take three years of rowan college and one year at rowan university. >> this degree would be a bachelor's degree at approximately $28,000. >> reporter: that is $28,000 total not per year. second new program is

retail giant wal-mart is closing 269 stores and more than half of them in the u.s. 10,000 american workers will ab affect by this move. most of the u.s. locations are the smaller wal-mart express stores, they were lawn inched 2011 and the test program, the company sites increasing competition including on line rival amazon.com. but wal-mart says in stores in our area will be closing. amazon is offering a discount for its prime membership this weekend. the subscription fee will drop from 99 to $73. the promotion starts tonight at midnight and runs through sunday, here's the catch only new customers can take advantage of that deal. ukee, you always say if you love what you do you never work a day in your life. >> true, true, so true.

precipitation quickly lifts out, temperatures still very mild to start by january standard in the the 40's. as i mentioned in advance of the secondary cold front we will still climb up in the upper 40's tomorrow to near 50 , and then once that cold front drops through tomorrow evening, we start to clear skies out completely, that is when temperatures will start to take a dive down into the 30's but future rain amounts we will get healthy rainfall totals from this rain overnight tonight, generally about a half inch, i think in most places we will will see low amounts toward lehigh valley, and the highest amounts down the shore, we could pick up an inch or over an inch of rainfall from this rain tonight and then clearing out tomorrow, 49 degrees, still within that colder air builds in by sunday. 39 degrees. the passing snow shower possible as we head into sunday evening, and then on monday, arctic blast, arrive, we're down to 29 degrees, tie for our coldest high temperature of season so far.
