the there is always a lot of traffic, and cleared things up a lot. >> reporter: don't try driving on those shoulders and winding up with a ticket for it, just yet, penndot says that the shoulders would need widening from eight to 10 feet to 12 feet, a big challenge since much of the schuylkill is tightly squeezed, between rock walls, and the river. >> for now if i'm talk in traffic i will just look longingly at that opened lane. >> that is right, i mean it is not for use right at this present time. >> reporter: so we will just to have wait, until we see if we can ride this schuylkill's shoulders, but then, waiting is nothing new for all of us, who brave the the expressway, every day. >> if we can expand that road in any possible way, it would be a good thing for the city. >> reporter: now in addition to possibly being able to ride on the shoulders here penndot also says that variable speed limits and high tech traffic monitoring are all part of the

>> hi, yes, sir contact the the vice-president is running late. he is still upstairs, chatting, and shaking hand. he talk about how cancer has impact his family, and that he wants to speed up research, to space other families. the vice-president launched his moon shot mission to cure cancer with the tour through one of the research labs at penn's abramson cancer center and then round table discussion with doctors and researchers. >> the goal, whatever break throughs we can make in ten years my goal to make sure we can do tonight five years. my goal, it is that we have find absolute cures but for some cancers we get to the point where we can manage and they become chronic diseases. >> penn is one of the cutting edge places in the the country doing work on new cancer treatment. >> reporter: breast cans are patient ann backeract was part of the clinical trial at penn testing new clinical trial drugs. >> it work enormously well in

two treatments. >> reporter: she was able to attend her son's wedding bald from the experimental chemo but on the road to recovery. >> treatment has gotten much easier to tolerate and much more effective. >> reporter: labs at penn abramson cancer center are working on a variety of treatments including immuno therapy where cancer is killed by patient's reengineered immune system. >> we are beginning to see a few patients hoff been treated with such therapies really walking away from their cancer with durable remissions. >> reporter: vice-president's moon shot mission is aiming for more of that, and it follows death of his son beau present brain cancer. in announcing he wouldn't run for president joe biden said instead wow lead effort to cure cancer. >> cancer has a very personal impact on millions of americans, including the vice-president. >> reporter: it is estimated 1.7 million americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year and while survival rates are improving, the vice-president says that owe wants to ramp it up.

reporting live from penn, i'm stephanie stahl, for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you for that. two alarm fire badly damages a home this lower gwynedd montgomery county. chopper three over wood view and canfor lanes with fire fighters on the scene. fire broke out just before 1:30, crews were able to contain the flames in about an hour. no one was hurt. no word on what caused the fire at this moment. twenty residents in burlington city, new jersey are displaced after a large fire ripped through a section of the row homes. three people, including two children suffered minor injuries. authorities say four homes were damage after the fire broke out at 5:30 this morning on the 300 block of st. mary's street. red cross is on the scene and helping the families no word as of yet on the the cause. elderly woman is hurt after her neighbor's car smashes through her home, this happened on colfax court in wilmington delaware this morning. police say 60 year-old driver bank in the garage the on the same block before plowing in another home, pinning a seven

three-year old woman under the car. victim was trapped for about a half an hour and may have broken two ankles. her neighbor was cited for reckless driving but police continue to inn rest gate that crash. philadelphia police need your help identifying the man in this sketch. this suspect is wanted for robbing and shooting an elderly woman in the face as she walk near the 7100 block of erdick street in tacony new years eve. the suspect was driving a white nissan maxima, and it was last seen, getting on i-95 headed toward bucks county. a $6,000 reward is now offered for information leading to an arrest. a philadelphia man has been ordered into a pretrial intervention program for hitting the dog, a pit bull mix named ruby with a baseball bat. forty-one year-old andrew wallace will participate in anger management and complete community services. he is also been ordered to pay $2,500 toward the dog's medical care. there are new developments in the border explosion at philadelphia elementary school

this week that critically injured a maintenance workers. schoolworkers part of the service employees international the union protested today at philadelphia a cool district headquarters. the union says the incident which injured one of their members is an example of unsafe conditions in schools, because of the deteriorating infrastructure. mayor kenney met with the union and district officials tonight, and, announced a task force that will be going around to look at school boilers and heaters. >> i think this is an opportunity, an example of how the city, school district, state, labor everyone can work together to address the problem that is clearly there. >> the maintenance workers was injured wednesday when he attempted to ignite a backup boiler at edmond elementary. it exploded igniting the man in flames. an appeals court in philadelphia a has sided with billion air karl icon in his demand to end taj mahal workers benefit this was last major obstacle before the billion air took over at the casino this ruling is in favor of the casino's parent

a north philadelphia high school celebrates a milestone a achievement. 100 percent of their first senior class, has been accepted into a four year college. "eyewitness news" at crystal ray school here on north broad street for the big announcement, many students pick up scholarships to their dream schools and they are very excited about their futures. >> my classmates are outstanding. lining this is something you have to live it up, we have to do our best, so everyone is living it up. we have been exceeding expectations. and, so i'm just so happy. >> wonderful. school's first graduating class consists of 86 seniors who have earned more than 300

we head into our saturday and on is rainfall that will be moving through as soon as over the next couple of hours that rain will start to build in but right now dry conditions, as we get a live look at center city philadelphia. the buildings, twinkling, looking good, temperatures feeling good. 50 degrees right the now. very mild day, light southeasterly wind a at 3 miles per hour, no wind chill impact abe temperatures today yeah, they were up in the 50's and many locations 54 , we will top at 50 in trenton, very mild day in mount pocono. 48 degrees. temperatures right new we have cooled down in the poconos. 36 degrees, still elevated at philadelphia 50 right now. we are at 48 degrees in ac but storm scan three is showing us that the clouds in place but that rain is a erasing to the northeast up the i-95 corridor. soon we will move in over the next hour to the delaware beaches and then as we head in the next few hours it will overtake a delaware valley, parts of the jersey shore, so rain is moving in as we head in the evening hours into the city especially after about

9:00 o'clock, continuing overnight the tonight, heavier at times, a rumble of thunder possible and for tomorrow mainly dry day, gradual clearing especially as we head in the afternoon and now behind this rain, we are still going to be mild. 49 degrees, breezy conditions. secondary cold front that will come through late day tomorrow and then take care of that for us. future weather shows us in the next several hours that precipitation shield lifting north in center city and moving up in the lehigh valley as we head after after ten or 11:00 and then widespread rain, heavy pockets of rain overnight tonight, best chance of the heavy rain will be along the coast there and then we will see possibility of a rain/snow mix in mount pocono and higher elevations where temperatures will be right on that border of the freezing mark but by 9:00 o'clock tomorrow morning that rain moving out and then as we head in the second half of the day the cloud deck slowly decreasing with more sunshine for second half of day but rainfall totals it will be fairly significant and especially down the shore where we could see an inch, over an inch of rain possible with those heavier rainfalls,

half to maybe three-quarters of an inch in philadelphia, then we will call light totals but still fairly significant a quarter to a half inch in the lehigh valley through early tomorrow morning, so, for tomorrow, those showers come to than a even. main event is overnight tonight. peaks of sunshine in the lunch hour as we look to noon, breezy conditions taking us in the second half of the day, and then we will start to cool in the evening hours on the back side of that secondary cold front and that will take to us 39 degrees, on sunday, passing snow shower possible, in the evening hours, on sunday, and then as we look ahead toward monday as i was mentioning, cold, cold, cold, 29 degrees, windy as well so those wind chills will be in the teens all throughout the day and then temperatures themselves will be in the teens by tuesday morning, and still blustery and quite chilly highs in the 30's all through next week. >> that wind will make it. >> that is what it does. >> thanks, a lot, appreciate it.
