from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". good morning, honoring the dream. we're live as volunteers throughout the region get ready to take part in today's doctor martin luther king day of service. good morning respect it is monday, january 18th, i'm erika von tiehl. more on the king day of service coming up in a moment. also this. >> the democratic presidential candidates tackled many issues during sunday night's debate, while tackling each other. i'm weijia jiang in charleston, south carolina with the highlights coming up. >> first and for most, how about the snow yesterday? >> yep it, came down, didn't it? >> absolutely. >> just talking about that, too, we just haven't had any

snow yet. kinds of nice to see it. it is cold out there. >> came sunday, not monday if you are a commuter. >> exactly. >> and holiday, too, thankfully not too many people will be out, well we would assume, meisha is the expert there. >> won't be that many people out there, but we'll wait on the record for the. that will we are dealing with absolutely this much i know cold. >> yes. >> it is freezing outside. it will stay that way. going next to storm can three, start things off there, shall we say, right now the radar looking pretty darn quiet. tri-state sweep not picking up on much. throw the satelite on top of this, do still fine there is some snow, but way off to the northeast at this point. that disturbance now pulling away, so what we are left with is the winds, the cold, and some sunshine returning, that said, look at the area wind speeds, basically straight up out the northwest, seeing them anywhere from 15, 20, 30 miles per hour, that is noticeable, especially, in this kind of cold that we're dealing with, windchill values as a result, bottoming out here, may not feel any better than not even

just single digits, across portions of the lehigh valley but no better than below zero up in the poconos, already seen that so far this morning. and in the city, talking low teens here, for feels-like values. that should say today. but regardless, it is going to be pretty cold morning everywhere. so keep that in mind walking out the door, it will be noticeable chill out there, and you have to be bundled up adequately. that said, watch for black ice, may have formed since yesterday when we had the snow come through, actual air temperatures will likely get to the upper 20's at best this afternoon, keep in mind again you can't go by face value on that thermometer today. meisha? >> that windchill, it does it all, thanks, good morning, everyone, happy monday to you. looking outside, first thing i see when i look at the camera shot is the snow on the median, on the side of the street, letting you know it could be slick out there. we do know that we got some snowfall. so not causing any imagine or delays right now. this is the blue route, headlights moving in the northbound direction, approaching the schuylkill. it is just that snow that we are seeing out there.

so, usually plea curser it could be pretty slow moving this morning, good news is being it is martin luther king day that could keep some people at home and off the roadways, 59 south at cottman looking good, delaware county, again where we are seeing some snow way off to the side. here you can see, 95 south approaching 420, just past the airport, again, just showing you some snow on the camera lens. water main break active. it is active right now causing some icing on the roadways, malvern, swedesford road closed between church road and phoenixville pike. you're going to have to use this alternate, connestoga road or you can use lancaster avenue, back to you. >> meisha, thank you. day after their fears debate, three democratic presidential candidates will attend doctor martin luther king holiday event at south carolina state house. now last night in charleston, hillary clinton and bernie sanders clashed on gun control. and as weijia jiang reports, martin o'malley struggled to be heard. >> bill and hillary clinton greeted supporters and posed for pictures following the final debate before the iowa

caucuses. earlier secretary clinton and bernie sanders clashed on a number of issues, starting with gun control. >> he voted for immunity from gun makers and sellers which the nra said cents was the most important piece of gun legislation in 20 years. >> clinton slammed sanders for voting repeatedly with the nra. vermont senator pointed to his lifetime rating of c minus with the powerful gun lobby. >> i think secretary clinton knows that what she says is very dis inch jen ooh is. >> healthcare reform, also dominating the discussion here in charleston. >> the wealthiest country in the history of the world we should have healthcare for every ma'am, woman and child as a right. >> there are things we can do to improve it. but to tear it up and start over again, pushing our country back into that kind of a contentious debate, i think, is the wrong direction. >> former maryland governor

volunteers, all across some 1800 service project, throughout greater philadelphia, the signature event, happening here, at girard college, little later this morning, todd bernstein is the founder and the director of this really special day here in philadelphia. todd, big day ahead, first and for most, why should people wake up on their day off of school or work come out, volunteer, not just here but in their communities across the us? >> many different ways every celebrating. but, king was man of action, 36 a days of the year, and on this day we get to embrace his legacy, turning concerns about pressing community challenges, into citizen action, we hope that this one day of volunteering will turn into a lifetime of service. >> the theme here this year is justice. and there is a lot of different ways. you're doing that, but talk about the unemployment and the way to give back to those that maybe are struggling to get back on their feet. >> we think of dr. king is a fighter for social and racial justice, but he was champion

for economic justice, too. so we will have a jobs fair, with 500 job seekers choosing among 26 employers with real jobs, the main project where the governor and the mayor and senator casey will be serving involves sorting clothe that will be donated to men and women through career wardrobe and ready, willing and able, to men and women who are seeking employment, who are low income, or unemployed. and that's, i think, an important part whatever dr. king was about, as well. >> as people see this, they can still volume un smear. >> they can call our headquarters at (215)851-1811. >> thank you, today today so much. volunteers will start arriving around 8:00, the health and wellness fair starts, and everything gets con gets going at 9:00 a.m. >> eastern state penetentary also honoring dr. king today. visitors are being treated to

a special reading of letter from, letter written by dr. king in 1963 wheelies press orthopedics in birmingham, alabama. being red three times a day through today. event are free to the public. >> a new push is underway to add two more holidays to the city's municipal calendar to honor the islamic fate. holidays would be a day off for everyone. city council plans to discuss that bill this week. >> if the police are looking foremen who ditched a stolen car in old fifth happened early this morning crescent ville road and adams avenue. >> also, police are trying to track down a gunman who shot a worker to death and wounded another worker, at north philadelphia homeless shelter. investigators say it happened after an argument sunday morning, at the station house men shelter on broad street. >> and, three americans freed as part of prisoner exchange with iran undergoing medical evaluations in germany. one already home, the other has chosen to stay in iran. the us pardon or dropped charges against seven iranians for releasing those americans. a rhode island city official is out of a job this morning, after a controversy involving a man who dressed up as an elderly woman, for a press conference. get this. the this press conference held last week was about the city's snows angel program t asks

teens to help shovel the driveways and sidewalks of elderly residents. now, standing with the officials, was an elderly woman, but that woman right there turned out to be a man, identified as the driver of a local senior center. >> drives the senior citizens in to the salon. so do you have a wig that i could borough? he said i have to get dressed as a senior. >> so then you saw the story. >> saw the store. >> i what did you think? >> and i went oh, my god, i can't believe that, you know, he wanted it for that. i probably would have given him a better wig. >> well, that caused the city senior services director her job, although officials say she resigned. >> one person is dead and three other are in critical condition after a mile long pile up on a michigan highway. authorities say heavy snow, high speed, and reduced visibility yesterday is to blame for this 50 car pile up. cars mangled, other vehicles crashed between jackknife

tractor-trailers. the chain reaction crash caught many drivers by surprise. >> out of no where i was hit by a sim truck which caused me to casino every spin out, land in a ditch, my husband, i guess, he caught the semi truck tail end caught my husband, i mean, it was crazy. >> that highway was shut down for hours, while crews assess the scene and attended to the injured. >> right now, we want a live look along the ben franklin parkway center city. as you can see, oh, the winds just whipping those flags around. oh, i want to check in with katie, just frigid start. thanks to the wind it will feel like what the teens today? >> easily, at best, too, not going to feel much better than for anyone in fact some you might not even break out of single digit territory in terms of feel like value this morning. wind really where we start to turn our focus here, for this weather report. that's where we will bring in our eyewitness weather watcher network. at this point many of them are finding temperatures, cold anyway, 20's, teens, but let's talk about some of these winds, and windchills, that

come along with it, fran report 3-g 1 mile per hour wind speeds northwest flow out in nottingham, chester county, out toward the pocono region charles is in bath, pa, with 17-mile per hour wind speeds, 10-mile per hour wind speeds around chestnut hill area of philadelphia from phil, and the list goes on, gets little lower from lynn, john, ed and eileen, depending on location, may not be as blustery right now. but look what it does it to your windchill values, minus zero isn't number but cold enough, nottingham, out in bath again charles just reported that 17 or so mile per hour wind speeds, feels like five. so that gives you a sense whatever you are dealing with out there. and that's what i want you to really pay attention to, the feels like values, not so much the thermometer readings, factor in the winds, look at the thermometer, and knock good ten, 15 degrees off that's zero that's how it feels the to the maps, you probably heard the rumbling by now or if you haven't here we are to tell but it, largest storm system set to evolve by the end of the week. right now not even on the map. what you see in california is

not the storm that's eventually going to bring this possibility, it hasn't even moved on shore yet. so there are a loft question marks that remain, when you are this far out. but here is the gist, large storm system developing friday into saturday, for us, and it will be a present down near the deep south as early as say wednesday, thursday, but his is right now what looks to be the situation. it will move north. depending where that cold air wraps in, we could be looking at some very significant snow. when i say significant, we would be talking about possibly, and i preface this with possibly, a foot or more worth of snow. all question marks right now, we will let you know as it all evolves. by the afternoon talking up 20th at best, feeling like the teens, and just setting the stage for cold week. again the possibility of snow by friday. meisha? >> all right, we are going to brace ourselves, thanks, good morning, everyone, happy monday. happy martin luther king day to you. taking a look outside, talcony palmyra bridge, kind of hard

to see it, scheduled to open around 5:50, pretty much any minute right now, just fyi for some of you headed out the door. ft. washington, 309 headlight in the northbound direction at the turnpike area, looking good, but under these bridge decks, can you see these slick areas? those are friends, if any gets out on the roadway we start to get black ice, again more on the side streets, under the bridge decks, seeing right now, of course pulled off to the side walks, especially for those every you even walking around, just be mindful of that, we do have snow out there. a look at the schuylkill eastbound at city avenue looking good. as you can see, just beyond these trees, in the wish direction, certainly starting to heat up there as you get off the boulevard. another water main break in north wales. walnut st. at main street, we still have this water main break that's active causing some icing in malvern. swedesford road closed between church road and phoenixville pike, you will have to use that alternate, erika, back over you. >> meisha, thank you. no word when the eagles will
