>> this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". good morning. so how low can they go? we'll find out. plunging gas prices are music to the ears of drivers who are saving big at the pump. we'll let you know what's behind the plummeting prices, also, just how long the relief at the p.m. some expected to last. rough morning though if you are going to go fill up the tank. another dangerously cold morning out there. feeling like the single digit if your a already headed out.

you warm when sleeping at night, so does it sort of keep the grounds warm at night, tan can limit the amount of cooling that takes place, but when you don't have it, you're dropping down into the teens here. it could be a lot worse. right now at 17 here in philadelphia, but let's look at some of the other values around portions of the united states. fargo north dakota minneapolis, international falls, your actual air temperatures. it is 16 below zero. on the thermometer in international falls. that's typically one of the coldest spots of the us understandably so. for us not going to feel much better than when you factor the winds in. up through the pocono region, lehigh valley north most suburbs, it is more like sub zero there, as well as in the most outlying suburbs headed say toward harrisburg. city and immediate vicinity, montgomery county, bucks county, more like is her tow 5 degrees, not much better. but at least it is a little something on your side. then we look forward in this forecast, and despite full sunshine, much like what we saw yesterday, winds will crank throughout the day. not necessarily a damaging

one of the reasons it is looking good basically anywhere that i look this morning despite the fact we might be getting plenty of headlights and taillights out there is because the roadways are dry. that's helping us. doesn't mean there is no black ice out there. just means that the roadways for the most part are dry. ninety-five south at cottman looking good coming around the s curve delaware county another point of 95, 95 north at 452 looking good. as you take that all the way northbound to the airport looking good in and around there. so far no major delays at the airport either. erika, back over you. >> hey do you remember when gas prices are about $4 a gallon? well, today's price haves turned that into a distant memory. but, just how long is it going to last? same town. >> i think it is awesome. i found it on an app i had on my phone. so i specifically drove here for it. >> the reason the price of oil is dropping and fast. the closing bell friday didn't bring much confidence to consumers. at one point in the day the dow dropped up more than 500 points. >> the average investor, probably shouldn't check your 401k now because it will put now booed mood. >> ands alex perth say the key to ride things out and not to panic when the opening bell rings. still, you can expect the gas prices to stay low for now. >> it is authorities say when we will see those prices really start to climb. >> jim, with triple a mid-atlantic, and tells "eyewitness news" his offers is already expecting to see new low gas price records. the average price for gallon of gas is dollar 90. down from 3.68 in june of 2014. >> this is really surprise and demand, there is a glitch, plenty of crude oil out there, that's why the prices are solo. >> i can't understand how it is three, $4 a gallon couple

of years ago, how can they afford to produce it now? what changed? >> what changed is the price of barrel of oil. in june 2014 the price of barrel of oil was $107. on friday it was a little bit less than $30. reporting in bellmawr, david spunt, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> and, the latest numbers from triple a show that drivers in southeastern pennsylvania are paying average of 2.08 a gallon, in new jersey, it is 1.69. in delaware, it is a buck 79 for that gallon of regular gas. >> all right, right now, 5:36. time for check on your business news this morning, and world-wide twitter outage, and the irs is ready for your return. money watch's hena daniels joins us up at the new york stock exchange with those stories and much more for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, erika, the irs is ready to start the tax season, internal revenue service is excepting tax returns starting today. and taxpayers are being advised to check their mail and e-mail for important

documents, coming their way, including health insurance forms, and other tax information. more than 150 million tax returns are expected to be filed this year. >> if you're headed to the sun dance film festival, your next uber ride could be on a helicopter. the ride sharing app is partnering with airbus, to take customers from the salt lake city airport to park city for 200 to 300 bucks, a suv will pick you up and get to you your ride in the sky. uber tested on demand helicopter service between manhattan and the hamptons back in 2013. the price of gas briefly dropped to below a dollar a gallon in one town in northern michigan. during a gas war sunday night, one station was selling gas for 47 cents a gallon. police actually had to direct traffic there. other stations also broke the dollar barrier. this morning, how much, prices are about back to normal, about 1.40 a gallon in that area. according to triple a the

national average 1.89 a gallon. >> social media panic, twit is her down right now, all around the world. the site has apparently suffered a total out and. users attempt to go access the site initially got messages warning the network was over capacity, or suffering from an internal error. according to the british newspaper, the guardian, the company confirmed the outage from support account at twitter but so far users have been unable to see that tweet. erika? >> well, you know we just tried jumping on few moments ago, in philly we have twitter back now, hopefully makes its way back to up new york for you. so good news. thanks so much. >> thanks, erika. if a fan of chickie's and pete's' crab fries, good news for you. you will get the same taste at home with a bit after crunch. her's bringing crab fries flavored potato chips to store shelves sometimes in march. we're told they will be sold at stores around southeastern pennsylvania, and southern new jersey. still ahead this morning, security will be stepped up

authorities, however, did finds three life rafts carried aboard. still no sign though of the 12 crew members. among those on board, two are from pennsylvania. captain brian t kennedy is from malvern, chester county, and sergeant adam scholl is her from gardner's adams county. family, friends, of sergeant scholl schuller say they're hopeful. >> very caring outgoing person, there is just not enough words i could say. his heart is so big. >> authorities say the helicopters do carry black boxes, however, they've in the yet been recovered. >> the british parliament has ended debate on whether to bandon ailed trump without a vote. the debate lasted more than three hours yesterday. more than half million britains signed petition urging the government to keep trump out after his proposal to ban muslims from the. s. while many british lawmakers denounce trump most argue the presidential hopeful should not be banned from entering

britain. of course the saying police chases in california, but even this one probably caught the officers off guards. routine end to hour long chase when officers stopped the driver outside of los angeles early this morning. but, that's when things got real strange. see what's happening there? driver opened the door letting six dogs out on to the highway. the chase right back on there is time, the offers her to try to wrangle those dogs, they eventually rounded them all up and arrested the owner. didn't see that coming. >> rough day on the job for report nerve san diego. watch here nearly taken out by the huge wave. the reporter was taking some video on his cell phone when he got just little too close. my goodness, got to stay safe out there. just got drenched after the waves. surfers tanking advantage of the strong surround before waves as they hit 18 feet pounding the beach. then katie the beach, sounds nice right now. but this forecast, you want to stay away? >> slutly. we look forward to the up cop being weekend, coastal

at zero. john perkosie, it is negative two. and the list goes on. it is not much better even if you're in positive territory here. 3 degrees the best it feels like from lynn, phil, ed and robert. they're all across basically the greater philadelphia region here. so yes cold is the story for now, eventually the snow will become the next big thing. at the moment still high pressure essentially on your side. piece of energy, don't worry about that right there. eventually it will be across the northern portion of the jet stream. we get the tell straight earth on here. northern portion of the jet stream sends little piece of energy our way. that's going to trigger shower, snow shower, flurry come tomorrow night. and then we are going to start to see this guy move in, cross the rockies, and develop into something much larger, once it hits the plane states. and really it starts to blossom through the lower mississippi valley before drifting north. that will all happens thursday into friday. and specially saturday. so, timing for our snow at this point locks like it is afternoon at the earliest

just starting to heat up now as we push toward the 6:00 hour. of course we'll see it heat up even more into the 6:00 hour. 422, taillights moving in the eastbound direction, then valley forge, giving you kind of look at what it looks like there. everyone still traveling at posted speeds as we push toward that six. that's good news. here is a birds eye view, just love it, vine at 95, looking good. everyone moving about, as they should right now, we will start to see things slow down just little bit in a little while. water main break in glennside. jenkintown road at briar wood road. also, another water main break in gilbertsville berks county philadelphia area before loud 100 northbound ramp. both places both places where these water main breaks are, traffic getting by but use caution, as we are going to have some icy conditions. erika, back over to you. >> thank you, meisha a on your cbs-3 health watch this morning, the season for coughs, colds, and sore throats. but new recommendations are reminding doctors to prescribe antibiotics only when absolutely necessary. kenneth craig with the details from new york.

>> con gels dollars at small. >> little bit. >> mackenzie has sore throat and cough. >> as it persisted for five daisy decided to stop in and just kind of make sure that it wasn't strep. >> sit m.d. doctor, jennette, determined it was not strep throat, a bacterial infection but more likely a virus, which is not treated with antibiotics. >> seems like a lot of people really think antibiotics are the answer for everything. >> kenneth, it is important to remember that most coughs, colds, runny nose, sore throats, are caused by viruses. >> the american college of physicians together with the cdc wants to cut down on prescribing antibiotics for common respiratory infections. they say about 50% of antibiotic prescriptions may be unnecessary. >> the goal of this is to prevent antibiotics which would cause antibiotic resistance, which is literally killing people in this country. >> the recommendations include prescribing antibiotics only

when strep is confirmed. for sinus infections that last more than ten days, or itself ear symptoms last three days. meyer was told to rest and take over the counter meds. >> i want to make sure that when i'm really second my body will be able to fight it off and the antibiotics will be able to help. >> she was told to come bark if her symptoms got worse. kenneth craig, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". all right, well, hey, if you are like us on the morning show then you also try to catch up on sleep during the weekend, right? new study says, that that can actually be beneficial to your health specially in men. researchers at the university of chicago found catching up on your sleep over the weekends can reduce your risk of developing diabetes. the study showed getting fewer than five hours of sleep on four consecutive nights hypes diabetes risk 16%. but, after sleeping more than nine hours for two consecutive nights, that risk returned to normal levels. everyone in the studio turned when they heard that. oh, still ahead this morning,

>> barely above zero headed out the door. katie is updating the frigid forecast coming up. first, a long planned wedding reception takes place in see at he will without either the bride or the groom. the groom back out about a month before the wedding. and as debra horn reports, the bride decided to donate the entire party to 150 homeless families. >> you would never know the idea for this unusual wedding reception came out of heartache. the bands is here ... the ram bunks us guests, too, even the bride's mother is on the dance floor, only the bride and groom are missing. the party to celebrate what was supposed to be their wedding day transformed instead into a night to remember for 150 people who have no permanent place to live. >> this was supposed to be a very different day for you and your daughter and your family. >> that is so true. >> karen olson's daughter dana

decided she wanted to donate the reception to a charity with the help of her grandfather, they settled on mary's place, shelter for homeless families. >> and so after contacting them, and looking into the organization, we thought that is a perfect match. >> mary's place found hairstylists and make up artists, willing to donate their services to give these families a time of make-over, a chance to turn a terrible wrong into a right. >> it is sad, really is, but i think it is great instead of throwing away all of the food, she's doing this. >> i asked what message daisy walter has for the no longer bride to be. >> thank you, and i hope everything works out for you. >> what an incredible person to donate this. >> and one person's heart break now was spread to all of this selflessness to so many people. i got goosebumps. i love that story.

>> i love that the mother of the bride went there, all had their hair done, make up done. >> and the homeless got to enjoy something spectacular. >> that is a beautiful store. >> i so great. sticking to the theme of weddings here, today the 70s wedding anniversary for lois and bill larkin of declare moore, oklahoma they were high school sweethearts back in the day. they celebrated yesterday afternoon at a mayo hotel in tulsa where they actually spent their wedding night back in 1946. the happy couple let us know how they've mid it seven decades together. >> we've had a lot of good memories. it's been a wonderful time. i'll -- i've never won an argument in 70 years. >> he was always wrong. >> oh, you hear, because he was always wrong. bill says when you get into an argument and you're right, don't say anything. and if you're wrong, apologize, so good advice, right? congratulations to mr. and mrs. larkin. we'll be right back.
