escape. another fire, here in center city leaves dozens of people home less this morning. several people were hurt, including two fire fighters. and we're live with the very latest on the investigation into how that fire started. off the top it business this monster winter storm heading our way. katie has some new information when it all will hit. good morning it is wednesday january 20th i'm erika von tiehl. that cold weather is forcing closure of the west philadelphia will school this happened yesterday. students at allen locke elementary school were dismissed because the building lost heat. we are working to find out the if the classes will resume today because you need that heat on in your home, car every where you go. lets check with katie on the sky deck which is not heated, i'm sorry katie. good morning, ladies. >> happy wednesday. roadways are looking good, for those just tuning in they are nice and dry this morning but it is cold out. another cold day. katie, what is the storm for us. >> another cold day. we had expected to see some sunshine as we are bying our

time awaiting the arrival of what looks to be a pretty substantial storm system for our area. lets start off by taking you out to show you a nice wide zoom. your eyes gets drawn to the the the ohio river valley, mississippi valley, that is not the storm we are dealing with by week's end. the this is a disturbance that will bring a snow shower or flurry. focus on idaho, you see energy starting to develop out that way. that is what will eventually turn into a very large storm system what we will call a major east coast snowstorm. the timing right now is friday into saturday. what else do we necessity about this. heaviest snow out of this storm will be measured in feet, the the question is who gets it. because until we really see this take shape over mississippi valley we cannot pinpoint who gets what but i do think safe to say we are looking at least 6 inches out of this in most locations, probably a foot or more. it is definitely possible. major coastal impacts, too

"eyewitness news" confirms one man died in the blaze in the 2600 block of abington road. there is still no ward on that victim's identity or how the fire started. battling fire and ice in center city these flames giving fire fighters in philadelphia all they could handle last night. aerial shot from chopper three showing intensity of the fire on rittenhouse square just incredible. now two dozen people are home less. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. still a lot of work to be done here on locust street today, when we first arrived on the scene early this morning fire crews were still here and remain here overnight working on hot spots. those engines are gone. but later today fire investigators will work to figure out what started this fire. this is as two does ebb residents have anything left. flames able smoke filled this rittenhouse square neighborhood tuesday night. chopper three over the the 2100 block of locust street as the the fire grew from one alarm to four. >> it is pretty scary. you don't know which way wind will blow or spread. >> reporter: twenty-one apartments here and two neighboring home were evacuated as fire fighters work for two hours to get the flames under control. and, nasty wind chill, made it tough fight even tougher. >> yes, and then if you don't keep water flowing your hose lines can freeze up as well.

>> reporter: meantime red cross kept about two dozen displaced resident warm bay transforming nearby trinity church into a shelter. it is so cold, so many people and like dogs, babies, and just really terrible. >> really sad that this happened. i'm glad to hear they got everybody out. >> reporter: no residents were hurt but two fire fighters did suffer minor injuries and they are expect to be okay. investigators believe that the fire started in the basement and work its way up causing the building to partially collapse. >> once it is safe we will have l and i coming out, once it is safe we can get inside to determine what the origin and causes. >> reporter: fire commissioner says this fire was contained to that one apartment building, however scope is unclear this morning. fire investigators will return to the scene to conduct that cause investigation, later today. it doesens of people displaced and red credits helping seven families who didn't have anywhere to go. you can see behind me that locust street between 21st and

this is first time in a decade for this. >> we are in the great place to see great planets. this morning we can easily see four planets in the morning sky. right here, from the sky deck, are you ready right here from the the sky deck. the this is jupiter right up here. >> jupiter. >> right over here that red one that is mars right there. and then saturn is over here to the east. you can see venous next to the philadelphia inquirer building. >> say you want to step outside and catch a grams what is best way to start picking out planets. >> just turn yourself to where you see sunrise in the morning in your neighborhood you know where the sunrisees. turn to that side of the sky you will see a white object that would be venous. coming back to the right, next bright object in the sky is jupiter and you are all set. if you got a really lovely astronomy app for christmas present for your phone, all you have to do now is turn it on and start using it and that will help you find it. >> i see we are looking at crescent moon here on the

light snow shower or a flurry tonight n problems today. here's the energy that granted doesn't look all that impressive but this will move out of the mountains, drop south, carve out cold air of its own, grab moisture and cut itself off. that is where problems start to come into play here, guys. looking ahead it is friday as early as afternoon but especially friday night into saturday we will be on the northwest side of this storm system. track is still something that will be fine tuned with time but it looks like heavy snow is the the majority, kind of precipitation we will get out of this with strong wind as well. now, lets talk as well about what kind of impact are we looking at? how much snow? we don't have a snowfall map. the it is still soon but it is a safe bet we will see over a foot in some area out of this win gusts as high as 50 miles an hour depending on how long, a lot of blowing and drifting could lead to blizzard watches and warnings. not yet. the coastal flooding is very

katie. happy wednesday to you, if you are just waking up with us, and, here's schuylkill, abe you are certainly heating up around city avenue both directions, east and westbound. you are still traveling posted speeds here. we have got a real hot spot as we push toward 7:00 o'clock. you are just starting to heat up there. i-95 south at cottman we are looking very slow for a moment there in fact, southbound that is something going on but there is not. it is just very busy. i-95 south you can see break lights coming around that s curve. that is letting you know you are slowing down less than posted speed and that will persist through our rush hour. vine at i-95 you can see plenty of vehicles on the roadway. this is one of my favorite shots. i just love it. but you can see getting very busy as you move in all directions at the vine at i-95. 422 headlights moving in the eastbound direction at the turnpike. this is another area i'm keeping my eye on. it was looking busy a moment ago. we are looking okay.
