this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". bundled up, but still calm. for now. seeing some dog gone chilly temperatures right now throughout the region, as we break for major winter storm on friday. good afternoon, i'm erika von tiehl. another chilly day across the delaware valley, keeping our eyes glued to the radar, we get ready for expected to be major winter storm. we want to get over to justin drabick, i know us guys have been watching this since last weekend? >> pretty amazing, these models picking it up already. storm hasn't developed yet. doesn't develop until tomorrow. that's why still a lot of changes possible in this

forecast, but we have the cold air in place, that's huge. this is what we haven't had for much of the went owe now finally going to get a storm that will run through the cold air, not as cold today, arctic air easing up its grip from the delaware valley, check it out compared to 24 hours ago, eight to 11 degrees warmer, feels better outside, right now the numbers generally at or above freezing so good news there. winds, also, much lighter out of the northwest coming in 10 miles per hour or less, so no nasty windchills, that's not the storm on storm scan3, you do see some snow showers breaking out across parts of kentucky, tennessee, the ohio valley, little weak disturbance in the upper atmosphere, could be stray flurry or snow shower specially south of the city through the overnight hours tonight. but again that's not the main event. that storm doesn't develop until tomorrow. along the gulf coast. so for today, just partly sunny skies, finally back above freezing, 36 degrees for the high for philadelphia, mid 30's at the shore, 20's in the poconos, now let's jump ahead to friday as the storm

develops and tracks up the east coast, expecting by late friday afternoon heavy snow to develop from southwest to northeast, gusty winds, blowing and drifting, coastal flooding, certainly, a bet. obviously hazardous travel beginning friday night pretty much the day saturday along the coast look out very strong northeast winds coming in gusting to 50 miles per hour, a lot of coastal flooding, and beach errosion, we'll show you, or time things out when the storm finally arrives, show you where the hardest hit areas could be, i'll show you that in the seven day coming up in a few more minutes, erika, back to you. >> thank you, you can track the major winter storm any time at your fingertips, download the free cbs philly weather app. it is available on itunes and google play. and it is a difficult time to be forced from your home into this freezing cold. but that's exactly what happened to families in center city in an apartment building when a four alarm fire broke out. chopper three shows that building near 21st and locust right now. cbs-3 reporter anita oh joins us on rittenhouse square where searches are searching for the

cause of the fire. good afternoon, anita. >> good afternoon, erika, i just learned that of the two firefighters injured, while battling that blaze last night, one released from the hospital this morning, another remains there in stable condition. i want to show you the scene, what it looks like today, at the very different scene than the relentless flames we saw last night. this historic apartment build something now covered in icicles, and fire officials were just using cameras to look inside the building to determine whether its structurally safe. also told by crews on the scene that 38 units in this block have no power due to the damage from this fire. and we've seen people stopping by that throughout the morning, i spoke to one witness who is also here last night, watching as this building went up in flames. he says he lives few blocks down and came outside when he heard the commotion. here's how he describes the scene today. >> it looks like winter wonderland kind of. but it is, you know, a shame that this kind of stuff has to

happen. you know, it has done a lot of damage, quite amazing, and i feel really bad for who ever's apartment this was. >> chopper three over the scene now. it has been a battle of the element for crews, the biting winds had made it tough for firefighters put out this four alarm blaze last night. today definitely more challenges foray head for investigators as this building as you can see just covered in sheets of ice, and much of the neighbor's belongings inside i'm told are total lost. but the good news is that everyone who lived here was safely evacuated when this fire happened. and the red cross has stepped in to help this displaced neighbors. back here live, fire marshals remain on the scene assessing the damage they say they expect to stay here for much of the day, but as far as what caused this fire, officials say, that it is still unknown at this time. live in center city, anita oh, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". now, this picture from the

claymont fire company shows what firefighters face when they confront add deadly overnight fire in tally ville. one man was killed, when fire swept through a home on abington road in dartmouth woods. that victim has not been identified. investigators are searching for the cause. a developing story now, this noon. gunman kill at least 20 people at an university in northwest pakistan. in addition to 20 civilians, four attackers killed in the attack. one taliban group immediately disowned the attack. but, the associated press has received a claim of responsibility. that claim came from the taliban lead here was the mastermind behind a 2014 school attack. that killed more than 150 people. massive search for is it marines missing after two helicopters crashed off the coast of hawaii went to recovery and salvage mission, five day search basilica of saints peter and paul sea and air failed to locate any signs of those marines. all four life rafter were spotted, but no survivors.

two of the marines were from pennsylvania. turning now to campaign 2016, donald trump stomped in iowa and oklahoma with new ally, while ted cruz and marco rubio focus on new sham shire, mostly quiet day for the democratic candidates. craig boswell with the latest from washington, d.c. >> donald trump greeted large crowd in iowa this morning looking for support less than two weeks before the state's caucus. >> if we win iowa we'll run the table. we may lose a state. >> trump's campaign for the gop presidential nomination got a big boost on tuesday, when sarah palin endorsed him. >> sarah came along, she said we love what is happening. it is a movement. >> palin supported ted cruz when he ran for the send that the 2012. and cruz says he will always remain a big fan of the former alaska governor. cruz was out campaigning in new hampshire this morning, zeroed in on what woe do if-ee elected. >> first thing i intends to do

is list rescind every illegal constitutional executive action taken by this president. >> on the democratic side hillary clinton is spending most of the day fundraising, she holds size recall lead in the national polls over bernie sanders, but the vermont senator is ahead in new hampshire and hopes for good turn out in iowa, as well. craig boswell, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". and stay with cbs-3 for the latest on campaign 2016. when we aren't on tv we're on line any time at cbsphilly.com. the water crisis in flint was the focus of last night's state-of-the-state address in michigan. governor rick snyder apologized saying the state will commit $28 million in the short-term to pay for filters, bottled water and healthcare in the city. snyder also promised more transparency, and would release his own emails regarding flint's water. flint residents have found two class action lawsuits against the governor over the state's handling of the situation.

against two would be carjackers in florida. in the city you can see the men rush to a van, on the other side that far pump before turning their attention to the red car. they try to jump in but the woman drags one of the men from the driver seat, see that ripping him off. wow. police say that woman had a good reason to fight. >> she was a mom watch that bad guy didn't know in the back seat of that car were two kids. and she wasn't going to let them be taken, so she fought, she dragged the guy out of the car and they both ran away like cowards. >> and there you g the men jumped in a get-away car which sped away, but they did not get very far. officers started following that speeding vehicle, which crashed, all three were arrested and charged. well done, mama. >> jamie foxx stepped outside his role as an actor to save a man's life. he is being called a hero today. and helped pullman from a car that crashed and exploded correspondent brittany hopper has the incredible story from west lake, california. >> emotional father walks down the driveway, with actor jamie

foxx. after thanking foxx for saving his son's life. >> was here when he needed to be here. he was here for my son. and as far as i'm concerned he saved his life. >> so you said you were able -- >> to pull him out. we pulled him out. he's in serious, serious burns. >> the truck lost control. rolled several times. then burst into flames outside jamie foxx's house monday night. it was foxx who helped pull the young man to safety. >> your son is a fighter. when he extends he extends out of the cabin, pull him out, and as we pull him out within 52nd later the truck goes up. >> he didn't have to do a thing. and, like i said earlier, that i think we all hope that we can do something when the time is there. but the question is do we? do we act? >> foxx known for playing many roles including a hero in some of his block buster movies. yet he still doesn't consider

saving a man's life heroic. >> look at it as heroic, i just look at it he just had to do something. you know, and it all just worked out. >> police say that the driver did suffer from some burns, and he was taken to the hospital. but, he was also arrested, for driving under the influence. brittany hopper, west lake village, california. >> the outcry continues today over the apparent lack of inclusion and diversity in this year's oscar nominations. a group of actors including spike lee and jada pink he will smith are boycotting this year's awards, they say the lack of none machine white nominees part of larger problem. george clooney is the latest actor to weigh in saying in a statement to variety, quote, how many options are available to minorities in film particularly in quality films, we need to get better at this. >> plenty of opportunity to

this morning, such great guy, as we looked out from the cbs-3 skydeck. >> ii noticed when looking, that's mars, right, the the red one? >> that's mars. >> the redish tint. is that hard to spot sometimes if it is a little cloudy out? what kind of conditions should you look for when trying to get outside and see the planet? >> just like this morning, clear sky conditions, will let you see these planet without much difficulty. here's one little truck. >> let's hear it. >> how do you tell the difference between stars and planet? >> no idea. >> stars twinkle. plan ends don't. >> there you have it. fun fact for your wednesday. eye also learned be able to see four planets in the sky next year, but they won't be as high in the sky making it little trickier. so really prime time for sky gaizing for about the next, and look so cool to look outside and see the planets. nice and clear to see that. >> yes, tonight not so much. some clouds rolling on in, then get ready for the storm. >> big story. >> getting closer and closerment storm hasn't developed yet, still computer generated storm, it will

happen. >> getting it? >> we're going to get something. this is pretty billing storm. will turn into. just really depend on where the track goes exactly will determine who sees the most snow from the storm system. but it is quiet for now, and finally back above freezing, we had good 48 hours below freezing, check it out, cold enough where we did get the frozen delaware there, check it out. live look, from chopper three, in new jersey, near pennsauken, do have some ice on the delaware river for the first time this winter season. and now today like i said going back above freezing, will stay cold enough to support snow with the next storm system. there you go. some true signs of winter here typically on average coldest time of year. headlines tonight just weak disturbance comes through, maybe flurry or snow shower, then track the major winter storm coming in friday into the weaken. >> good think with the storm, it doesn't get real cold behind it. thirty-three at the airport, 34 in allentown, but still there is arctic air just to

the north and west it, will start to ease up over the region, but like i said, stays cold, just in time for that next storm to run into it. here is the weak disturbance i was talking about over the ohio valley down toward tennessee, kentucky, maybe snow showers late tonight around midnight. that will rolls through. out west you don't even see the storm yet. the energy still way up in the jet stream. and it is not going to develop until tomorrow over the gulf coast. that's what we have to wait and see exactly where the storm system develops. check it out. you need energy in the jet stream to fuel these storms. out across the pacific northwest. watch what happens in time. dives southward over texas, start to see it intensifying, nice circle here, that's what you want to really energize east coast storm. that looks like it is going to happen later friday into saturday. so, as far as the snow potential goes, this is just one computer model showing the access of the heaviest snow just south and west of philadelphia, near baltimore and washington. but still areas here in the purple, easily potential for foot or more of snow, where exactly that storm goes will determine where this ac ex of

heavy snow. this is one computer model. weather service out of washington issued blizzard watch for tomorrow or friday night for parts of the baltimore area. so let's talk about the impact and timing from the storm. again, snow arrives later on friday, through the day saturday, tapering off overnight saturday, potentially for over foot in many areas. winds gust to go near 50 miles per hour specially on the coast. watch out for tidal flooding around times of high tide specially saturday. any time you have windy and heavy snow you will deal with power outages across the region. so here is the first disturbance goes through thursday, nice and quiet, we get some sunshine, here comes the next storm. now there is model holds the snow off little bit later until late friday night, 11:00 but starts to get in here it, will come in fast and furious, will start snowing hard the over night hours friday. cold today, partly sunny 36 degrees, tonight chilly maybe flurry 24. there is the extended forecast, once past the storm by sunday we clear the skies out, temperatures look to rebounds back into the 40's
