wintertime is about to, have a lot of folks gearing up. the big question is when will this storm arrive and what will it the bring? good evening i'm ukee washington. i'm jessica dean. meteorologist kate bilo has her eye on things. she has been watching this for days. she is in the cbs-3 weather center with the very latest. >> thanks, jessica and ukee. i want to start with the near term a system moving through bringing a little bit of snow. this is not the storm we are talking about later in the week but few snow shower moving through maryland and those coming in the philadelphia area later tonight. you may see flakes fly. we are not expecting any accumulation maybe dusting off to the south. temperatures in the lower 30's and upper 20's. so now, of course, moving to our major winter storm, certainly biggest one of the year so far. the first major storm of the year so far. we have got snow starting to push in during the day friday but good news timing is little bit later. it looks like it is a saturday storm, friday commutes should not really be affect. now these storms sometimes

like to sneak in earlier, i wouldn't be surprised if it comes in earlier then what this model is saying but it does not start until, we're under cover of darkness here friday night. 7:00 p.m. still seeing snow off to the south. more starts to creep in by about 11:00 o'clock on friday night. then our winter storm watch goes into effect friday evening right the through sunday morning. the that is for the entire area poconos in the included for now. significant accumulation expected with this storm. it is also a nor'easter battering wind along the the coast, coastal flooding, coastal flood watch for portions of ocean county all the way down through sussex county delaware and mouth of the delaware bay overnight as well with this system. your storm time line after 9:00 o'clock friday is when snow begins, begins south to north, throughout the day saturday, heavy snow and strong gusty wind. the snow will taper generally after 9:00 o'clock saturday night. coming up i will after accumulation map and have some concerns, we're looking at and also more the on the timing of that storm in, just a few minutes. jessica and ukee, back over to you.

across the region people are preparing some, expecting the worst. "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan is at a peco facility in south philadelphia with that part of the story. walt, walt, please. >> reporter: yes, the trucks behind me at this south philadelphia facility, trucks at all peco facilities getting prepared along with crews, peco telling me today that the utility is fully ready to face whatever power problems this storm might cause. remember how glad you were to see those hard working crews restoring power to your neighborhood? when the february 2014 storm brought trees and wires crashing down? well, if the the upcoming

storm causes any similar problems, peco now promises that you could well see them again. >> we have all available service personnel ready to respond, both in the field and back off in the office. >> reporter: days before the the first flakes fall peco is now on full alert activating all of its resources. >> we have have also secured additional personnel from our sister utility in chicago commonwealth edison. >> reporter: while in one anticipates resembling record 2014 winter mess, peco says it is keeping close watch, not just on how much snow we will get, but the type of snow. a mix of rain and snow, potentially causing the most problems. >> heavier wet snow could accumulate on trees and cause some issues and power outages for customers. >> reporter: checking more than 38,000 poles and lines annually a along with trimming trees, peco says it is busy every day trying to keep your

surveillance video captured on the 2,000 block of waterloo street at kensington hospital storage garage. in addition to that snow blower they also took a gas generator, power washer and leaf blower. if you have any information call the the police. crews are now demolishing parts of the apartment building destroyed by fire in center city. l and i says the building is at risk of collapsing after last night's fire at 21st and locust. we are told heavier damage was to the elevator shaft inside. the red cross is helping ten displaced families. we have talk to a man who lost more than just a place to stay. >> we came back this morning around 6:00a in to look at the building in the day light and it hit me then that we have nothing. no home, no clothes. not even a tooth brush. >> the the cause of that fire is under investigation. crews are also working to determine the cause of a fire in lower moreland. the roselyn fire company

family held a three week vigil where mike came back to life having go to relearn everything. it was tough and it was hard just to see him, not talk, not sit up. >> reporter: he doesn't remember much but is reminded reading all of the card that poured in. >> we can't wait to see you wake up. >> reporter: now facing three month recovery mike is on a mission to warn others he is especially worried about kid on hoverboards without hell in mets. >> as long as i can touch one person, one parent, to have their kid realize it is not a game. it can affect you. almost destroyed your whole life. >> they are so dangerous. >> mike and sharon were happy to hear that the new hoverboard legislation is being proposed in philadelphia that woman date helmets and other protective gear for children under the age of 12. adult care take hours don't enforce that would face fines up to $300. that is still a proposal.

remember that storm that started a couple years ago right in the middle of the day and grid lock as everyone tried to get home. we should not have that problem on a saturday. stay indoors and ride out the storm. would i recommend that. take a look is what happening right now. we have a precursor in virginia, down toward d.c. they are seeing flakes flying, little clipper system moving through at the moment. not much more than a dusting in spots off to our south through dell marv a we will see flakes here in philadelphia but again not a big deal, through tonight. we will just see a little bit of the hint of is what to come but certainly like the the main event well off to the west. it is here in the country's midsection and digging south where this will redevelop a couple times before it moves off the coast when it phases into a major nor'easter. we will see very heavy snow as that storm strengthen, off the coast, late friday, and into saturday. temperatures right now, very chilly, another cold day. not quite as brutal as yesterday because wind were not as strong but it is 26 in kenneth square. thirty in ardmore at lower merion high school.

thirty at snyder high school in bensalem. hainesport 31 degrees at the moment. take a look at winter alerts. the most of these go in effect late friday and continue into sunday. you can see winter storm watches from portions of kentucky, west virginia, into new jersey. here's your blizzard warning for baltimore, washington d.c. that is very scary stuff over that area. blizzard watch in effect meaning blizzard conditions could occurred. blizzard has nothing to do butch snowfalls but sustained period of strong wind and low visibility. it can happen just blowing snow around can happen if you have snow on the ground had gets blown around. but could be white out conditions in that area this weekend. temperatures across the rest of the region right around freezing at the moment. that is where they will stay through the the end of the week. fresh injection of arctic air and that is one thing you want to watch. we have warm ocean water temperatures. here's the mix line. it looks to stay off shore until saturday afternoon but this is mainly snow and heavy snow, friday night into saturday morning. look at these wind over

40 miles an hour throughout the day on saturday. over a foot in spots, as far as snow is concern, wind gusting to 40 to 50 miles an hour. we have a coastal flood watch for that coastal flooding. here is our relevant i estimates 12 to 16 inches cross the the i-95 corridor, lesser amounts down the shore thanks to the mixing. much higher amounts in the the d.c. area where some spots could see up to 2 feet of snow. overnight the snow shower, 25 degrees. you're witness weather seven day forecast had major storm is mainly sat the day. worst of it midnight to midnight but may end earlier then midnight but it will be a long duration of heavy snow and we will start to see improvement into next week and even warm up next week. so we will see everything start to melt. >> it is interesting too is no school closing toss worry b. >> it is weekend. >> parents don't have to have worry about their kid. >> no fun for kids but helps with the weekend. >> for sure. >> thanks, kate. >> we will be right
