♪ right now at 11:00 o'clock, gearing up for the first major winter storm of the season. bringing trucks, brining trucks rather could already be seeing major roads tonight. the region is kicking into snow mode. we'll show you how both emergency management officials and residents are working to stay one step ahead of the sto storm. all right. let's take a live look at storm scan3. snow showers are expected to move through the region tonight. now that's just a small preview

of the big show that's likely to come this weekend. good evening, i'm jessica dean. >> i'm ukee washington. the storm is heading our way and the two big questions on everyone's mind when will it get here and how much snow will we get? we have live team coverage as we track this major winter storm. let's kick things off with meteorologist kate bilo. she has the very latest information coming into the weather sent. >> kate. >> thanks ukee. we just got new information our latest run of the gfs model just came in and it seems to support what we've been saying the only thing to look at which we'll talk more coming up in main weather in about 15 minutes or so is the chance for mixing which could limb snow totals that's something we have to keep a very close eye on warmer air trying to move in with the storm. in the meantime tonight storm scan3 showing snow and it's snowing pretty steadily over much of the delaware at the moment. snow showers still back to the west from the philadelphia area but overnight tonight after midnight you can see a few of these snow showers move through philadelphia but notice the steady snow here over delaware where some spots could end up with a half inch much not. mainly just scattered snow

showers. this is not associated with our snowstorm this weekend. this is a clipper moving through. it's going to be here about 2:00 a.m. and moves on out. little or no accumulation in the city but a coating possible off to the south. mainly across portions of the delaware. let's take look at the timing of our major winter storm. this is going to get here late friday so you can see high pressure starts to move away. the storm lifts up the eastern seaboard and by friday evening, the snow will start. here's 7:00 p.m. starting to move into portions of delaware. i do think after about seven, 8:00 o'clock is when we can start to see first flakes moving in from south to north but you'll watch is that mix line will enough warm air get in to change this over briefly to sleet or even rain in portions of the area want does that mean for our eventual totals. winter storm watch has been issued. this goes from friday evening until sunday morning. significant accumulations expected in philadelphia. coastal flood watch also has been issued and we are talking about some major coasting flooding possible sunday morning some of these coastal flood

numbers could get mere hurricane sandy levels we'll talk more about that and of course how much snow is going to fall in our area that's coming up in just a few moments. back over to you. >> kate thanks so. with this major winter storm approaching preparations are under twinight. before the snow starts to fall "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is at philadelphia office of emergency management right now where they are getting ready for the first big stop of the season. david? >> reporter: ukee the city building behind me doesn't look like much but i assure you in the basement is going to be the nerve center for the snowstorm coming up this weekend and officials here they say we've had an easy winter so far. they are ready for whatever comes this weekend. the first snowstorm of the season is just a few days away and the early forecast show we're on target to get hit city trucks out brining the roads in preparation for the storm. >> i have a huge yard and i have huge hills ready to go sledding i can't wait for the snow. >> first time in philadelphia i don't know. >> she's from russia and insists

they're more snow there but back in philadelphia, this emergency operations room will soon be packed with representatives from police, fire, the streets department and members of mayor jim kenney's team. >> we will bring people in here 24/7 right now we're thinking sometime friday threw the weekend. >> reporter: samantha phillips is the direct of emergency management for philadelphia and says her department has extra money and resources because of the record setting warm december. >> we really can't complain about this winter because it's really been easy one to manage and so i have to say there's kind of small element of excitement as we approach this weekend to really get into action and do what we liked to here. >> reporter: penndot is in similar situation. and so are the folk at peco. who are already in snow mode. they're ready to hit the streets as soon as outages are reported. heavier wet snow could accumulate on trees and cause some issues and cause power outages for customers. >> we got the question, are you

rusty. you haven't dealt with this for awhile. we're in good shape and ready to go for this weekend. >> reporter: ready for whatever happens this weekend. i've check a lot of events are being canceled this weekend. interesting to note the sat's college entrance scam that will not be canceled that's a national date schedule for this saturday obviously folks will need to make other arrangements there but it is just hard to believe that one month ago eu i mean a month ago people were wearing shorts and t shirts just before christmas. we're live tonight david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news". winter is certainly here, david, thanks so much. the plow trucks are ready to hit the road and for the first time you'll be a toil keep a close eye on the plows as they clear the snow during the winter storm. natasha brown is live in new castle, delaware, tonight with more how this all work. natasha. >> reporter: jessica, deldot actually is already gun prepping major highways like interstate knife here which is what i'm alongside right now and take a look behind me. you can see the snowplows are gathering here at the salt yard

and now you will be just an app away from tracking these snowplows throughout the area. >> we applied salt brine to the roads today. >> reporter: delaware department of transportation is getting ahead of the massive snowstorm predicted to hit the region in the next couple of days. as many as 450 saul trucks will soon be canvassing more than 13,000 miles throughout the state and now you'll be able to track their every move. >> you can look at the real-time location of the snowplows throughout delaware. so if you're wondering how we're using our resources or where the plows are, you can click on the app and take a look and see where all the plows are real time. >> reporter: deldot will activate snowplow tracking app on thursday long before the first flakes are expected to fall. by downloading the app drivers will be able to trace in real time the highways and state roads being tackled by salt trucks. delaware department of transportation officials are hoping this technology will help drivers navigate a safer path.

>> our ultimate goal here is to keep penal off the road. give them information that they'll stay home. and not be driving on the snowy roads. >> i think that's a great idea to be honest with you because a lot of people travel routes they haven't even touch. so it's good thing. >> i think it's great. people will be able to determine what route they want to take if they have to go out. >> reporter: while most drivers seem to be embracing the idea of tracing a plow truck's routes, others question it's effectiveness. >> snowplows are only allowed to go on state property or streets -- state maintained roadways and things like that and people that live in private communities see the snowplows get set because they don't come back and plow their driveways out. now with the app it will be even worse i think. >> reporter: well we can only imagine these guys are about to be very busy in the days to come. we can tell you tonight that deldot uses approximately 13,000 tons of salt during any major snow event.

now the snowplow tracking app will be activated tomorrow ahead of the impending snowstorm and also be 30 live cameras along the route as well. so you can see the snow removal process in action. that's the very latest here in new castle, delaware, tonight natasha brown cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> all right. natasha, thank you. >> many people hit the stores today to stock up on searches. storm related products moving fast at fairmount hardware similar story at written house house hardware people snapping up shovels and ice melter was a hot item. reminder from philadelphia police you cannot save parking spots along the street during the storm. remember respect the chair. police are asking you if you see folks saving spots call them and report the location. they are using the hash tag no savesies. >> stay with "eyewitness news" for continuing coverage this major winter storm and updated forecast is available at cbsphilly.com around the clock as well as maps of the projected snow totals.

tonight the philadelphia police department is on high alert after receiving a new threat against officers. we're told police received an anonymous phone call saying someone wanted to shoot an officer. police then traced the call to an address in upper manhattan according to our sister station in new york city. the threat was also directed at new york officers and right now the nypd is questioning a man in connection with the threat. philly police also taking it seriously. >> we put out a safety bull tip to our officers just so they can be aware as a precaution, le letting them know the information we received, just so they can be on their toes and aware of their surroundings many we're still doubled up in two person vehicles that has hammed as a result of the or hartnett being shot last week. >> nypd says the person investigators are questioning is not the suspected caller. crews are now demolishing parts of an apartment building destroyed by fire in center city. the department of licenses and inspections determined the building at twirls 21st and locust is at risk of collapse

after last night's fire. we're told the heaviest damage was to the elevator shaft insi inside. the red cross is helping 10 display families. we talk to man who lost more than just a place to live. >> we came back this morning around 6:00 a.m. to look at the building in the daylight and it was -- hit me then that we have nothing. no home. no clothes. not even a toothbrush. >> the cause of that fire remains under investigation. prosecutors pursuing sex assault charges against bill cosby saying he's seeking special treatment by trying to have the case thrown out. even before the first evidence hearing. montgomery county district attorney kevin steal says he can prove cosby assaulted a woman at his cheltenham home in 2004. this after cosby's motion to dismiss the case. common pleas judge scheduled a hearing for february 2nd. new tonight turning guns into garden tools to promote peace in philadelphia. melting furnace heat the up donated firearm at the

university of pennsylvania. a blacksmith with the violence prevention organization raw tools then used a hammer to transform the firearms into garden tools. he sees them as a useful symbol of change. >> this one is almost finish. it will be a garden tool that use to cultivate and stick a handle in it so it will be a handle tool that you can use for weeding or planting. >> the demonstration was part of program to celebrate the life of dr. martin luther king, jr. you know what they say you're as young as you feel. >> and one local woman lives by that saying age is only number. >> i'm just so happy to be able to do the things that i do. >> all right. hang on to this. she's getting ready to turn 100. >> say what. >> uh-huh. she's showing no signs of slowing down. still ahead at 11 we'll have her secret to long and happy life. kate. >> snow falling across much of the area tonight but this is not associated with a major winter

legislation introduced tomorrow in philadelphia tee city council requiring children to wear protective gear when riding hover boards. hoverboard injuries are on the rise. 40-year-old mike keller is learning to walk again as his brain slowly recovered. he had a blood clot that his brain and serious swelling aft he fell off hoverboard the day after christmas.

>> my two daughters are almost, upping, father less. my wife is almost husband less. my mom and dad almost lost a son. which is very very difficult for me. >> there have also been issues with some hover boards catching fire. the car used by pope francis during his historic trip to philadelphia will be one of the must see vehicles at this year's philadelphia auto show and it could be yours. the pope's famous fiat 500l will be auctioned to benefit minute trees and missions of the philadelphia archdiocese during the black tie tailgate january 29th. another fiat will be on display during the show. the vehicles have become icons of the papal visit. >> it a to us raise much needed funds to help care for our communities most vulnerable members. >> the auto show is january 30th until sunday february 7th. we probably all have an idea of what live at 100 might look like but take the stereotypes

and just throw them out. >> yes. just shy of her 100th birthday one local woman drives herself to lunch with her friends, plays golf, creates art and travels. >> i had the chance to meet bobby rose at her montgomery county home and i found a woman who can teach us all a little something about living a full life. bobby rose is still swinging at 99. >> i've always been young in spirit. >> you're about to turn 100 years old we were talking earlier and you said age is just number. >> what do you mean? >> doesn't define high i am. any of the birthdays i've ever had i was happy to have them. >> p between those birthdays, she's done a little bit of everything excelling at pretty much all of it. a star athlete for all of her life she's passionate about golf. she plays regularly and even has a tournament named in her honor. she picked up the game decades ago and decidedly different time for women in sports.

>> it was long skirts and the hat. i had to wear a hat. i mean i didn't know any different. so when i look back at those pictures and i see them, i'm hysterical. >> then there's bobby rose the artist. >> it's actually one of my favorite pieces. >> see this rug. she made it. this metal sculpture her first creation. and so it goes. her home filled with expressions of her never ending creativity. >> it has to be my way. may not be anybody else's way but it's got to be my way. and that's all match nation that comes into it. >> but when you talk to her, it's her family two children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who clearly make rose the happiest. >> the important thing for me to do is to keep them together. and i think i've done a pretty good job. >> one look at bobby rose the twinkle still in her eyes and a true enjoyment of life and it's something we can all hope for as the years go by.

>> when you're 100 you don't have to live through snowstorms. unfortunately we do have are live through the snowstorm. we are actually experiencing some snow outside tonight and this is nothing to do with the storm friday into saturday but you may see a few precursor flakes coming down especial until delaware where it's been snowing pretty steadily for the past hour or two. not surprised to see half inch maybe as much an inch of snow on the ground here as we take a look at storm scan3 you can see there's another batch very light snow scattered snow showers but we had snow move through the dc area earlier tonight. they got about an inch of snow. the roads were not treated so what happens when you get snow on cold roads and then hot tires it turns to ice. tons of spin outs major traffic problems in dc tonight and you can see that snow is now moving toward delaware and there's a steadier band right about here you see that purple shading so if that moves through delaware on the tail end of what's fallen wouldn't be surprised to possibly one. amounts there. in philadelphia a few flakes during the remainder of tonight and then is out of here

overnight. still snowing in rehoboth beach and you can see the boardwalk pretty well coated here on our life neighborhood network cam a the sand coated as well. 25 degrees and again this just a little practice run for what we'll experience friday into saturday. so we do have blizzard what much in effect for baltimore and d.c. and in our area it's a wint storm watch that will turn into a winter storm warning as we get closer to the storm within 24 hours or so. friday afternoon into sunday morning. friday evening really. you can see 9:00 o'clock on friday that's when i expect the precip shield to be starting to work its way on inform so this is mainly a saturday storm the brunt of the storm is midnight to midnight although it may end sooner than that. heavy snow the dark purple showing banding setting up saturday morning. i want to you watch this mix line this particular model and actually the latest run of the gfs just came out less than had a half hour brings mix line and sleet and rain towards the i-95 corridor on saturday. this is not a lock. but that could lower our ams but

then on the back edge, as the storm moves out, the snow intensifies once again and we could get some banding to set up. future wind gusts, very strong. 30 miles an hour wind gusts in philadelphia at noon but you can see down the shore, wind gusts over 50 miles per hour there's a coastal flood watch down the shore that could bring in some major coastal flooding problems some property damage is possible down the shore and through the delaware bay as well the wind piling the wind up along the coast all day saturday gusts over 50 sustain winds on saturday over 30 miles an hour pretty much all day for the shore points. let's break down the impacts by time period you can see the heaviest of the snow friday night through the day saturday. over a foot in spots. winds gusts 40 to 50 miles an hour especially saturday afternoon into sunday. coastal flood watch is in effect for that time period as well and the winds could lead to possible power outages. here's our first call snow map. 12 to 16-inches expected in a general swath along the i-95 corridor. that does include philadelphia.

slightly lower amounts north and west and also south and east thanks to the mixing. if we do get more mixing we may have to trim back these numbers much this is a preliminary call. we're looking pretty good for a foot of snow in philadelphia. overnight a seventy two snow shower in spots. 25 degrees. "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast shows the brunt of the storm is on saturday. heavy snow, gusty winds and don't discount those coastal impacts if you have friends family living down the shore. they need to prepare as if this was perhaps a tropical system. very very strong winds and we've been through nor'easters before we know the damage they can do down the shore. >> that's for sure. >> thanks kate. >> don what's coming up in sports. were busy night in sports. sixers do something they haven't done all season. the big five celebrates 60 plus we hear from chip kelly and the gang looks to be almost complete. the eagles coaching staff rounding into shape. those stories coming up next in
