4:30 am
mast past good morning, we have new information just in. we are now under an blizzard warning. looking at storm scan3, showing major storm system forming, inning closer to our region. >> meantime, preparations continue with heavy snow expected, penndot is loading up the salt trucks, and the plows are ready to tackle the roads once the first flakes fall. and from the city to the shore, it is not just snow, but also flooding concerns for the jersey shore communities, all on the coast, our eyes on all of it for you. good morning, it is friday, january 22, i'm erika von tiehl. >> i'm jim donovan. talking about it all week. the day is finally here, the late west weather and traffic together. good morning, ladies? well, good morning, happy friday. roadways are looking good. still overnight construction project, getting out of our way now, roadways still dry. katie, obviously the big topic
4:31 am
today, what is in store? >> absolutely, and you know what, guys it, doesn't look as though anything has changed all that much, and our thinking from what we ends up with snow total wise, the kind of winds we'll finds, now it is just starting to see the weather service issue what we casino of had expected here, the blizzard warnings, and the winter storm warnings now taking effect for us. they do go into effect tonight, not out there yet obviously, clear scion storm locally, but the sign every things to come off to the southwest. here it comes. with not just snow, but mixture of some ice, some sleet, as well as very heavy rain. snow is a very impact full storm. and a lot of ways. it doesn't get here until this evening, how much, so you will get through i would say pretty much the whole day at least, daylight hours, without a hitch. but then, all of these alerts take effect. so blizzard warning, not to mention winter storm warnings in effect for everyone, take your pick, what you will find out of. >> this winds is issue everywhere frankly, timing the storm, tonight is all begins, seven to 11:00 p.m. window
4:32 am
specific to the city and immediate suburbs. for saturday, though, everybody will be under this influence of heavy snow and strong winds, toward the coast, little bit of different scenario, which we will be talking about, but into sunday morning when it looks like this will be exiting completely. we might still have bit to track here as late as early sunday morning, then still left with winds. so blowing, drifting snow remains a concern. as it stands right now, the winds actually pretty light. for the most part out of the north or northwest. that's going to shift, eventually turns more northeast, we have full blown winter storm on our hands by tonight. so that time to sort of prepare for this storm, starting to dwindle, but at least for now the day as it stands, through the daylight hours specifically, no problems. just yet. it is tonight that things really get underway. >> okay, that's great for our commuters. we know it is coming, thanks, no way to avoid t the good news is this morning, good morning, everyone, happy friday, friday, moving toward the weekends. that's the good news, only down side we know that

4:38 am
concellations on amtrak, but that could change, if you are planning on getting out of town by train, call ahead. and when winter weather hits you can help us tell the story, share your snow photos on facebook and twitter and instagram with the #cbs3 snow. you can see your pictures right here on "eyewitness news". >> now, "eyewitness news" has you covered as we keep our eye on the storm. we will bring you live updates throughout the day, leading up to expanded coverage starting at 4:00 p.m. we will be with you through the night, with complete coverage on "eyewitness news" at 11:00. >> in other news this morning, police are investigating a homicide in west oaklane. an unidentified man in his 20's was gunned down shortly before 2:30. it happened in the alleyway in the 1900 block of allson street. it also appears that the shooter was at point blank range. they remain at large. eyewitnesses help police catch suspect wanted for shooting in center city. man was shot twice last night, at 15th and chestnut.

4:40 am
capitol region. back in two
4:41 am
4:42 am
>> washington dc is making sure they don't get off guard. today the federal government will be closing its offices at noon. non-emergency workers also have the option of working from home today, and there is plenty of salt for those roads. now, it did not take long for snow shovels to disappear from a lowe's in charlottesville, virginia, took only two hours for more than 700 shovels to sell out. how about that? of course preparation for this impending winter storm, charlottesville anticipates 18-24 inches of snow. and this may be the best deal of the storm t comes from outer space. nasa released the photo of the low pressure system over the south central united state. >> when you see that picture, just how big this really is. >> wow. >> coming our way. >> checking the forecast. >> indeed. and well the storm is a sure thing at this point.
4:43 am
we going to walk you through all of the mechanics, how everything will shake out here with the winds, with the snow totals, timing, everything for you. so all nice one big fell swoop to get you out the door today. actually getting out the door today won't be too much after problem. it is getting home perhaps, perhaps how late you plan to stay out today, because the snow begins to fall, generally once the sun goes down. we walk you through everything. so here is the storm, yes, pretty looking storm. usually when they look pretty like this they tends to have major impact. >> this one absolutely will. so, you have got all of the pretty colors that are available to us here on storm scan. the purple for the snow, the pink for the icing, obviously, that heavy rainfall right along the leading edge of the cold front which might even trigger some severe weather. so a lot going on with this, and it is starting to drift north into southwestern virginias we speak, eventually, headed our way too. now, let's time this out for you. delaware, southern new jersey, talking six-9:00 p.m. window for the snowflakes to begin to flight out there tonight, more like 7:00 to 11:00 for the suburbs, and gets later and later the further north you travel here simply because it
4:44 am
is lifting in rather than coming in from the west, let's say. now, in terms of when, how things will all sort of shake out here with the way the storm spins out, so here is 1:00 p.m. today. it is still making its slow climb into even maryland, just starting to see it at that point. soap, yep, i think you will get through the better part of the day. that window of prep time starting to dwindle obviously, then the snow starts to fly. just doesn't stop. now, that said, notice, there is a little bit after demarcation line, where you will likely see mixing take place, that looks like it is closest to the shore towns specially, so that's going to limit your snow totals we think. there might be a little bit after lull that breaks out too. specially through portions of delaware, southern new jersey, so that, too, may limit your snow totals. but, that said, it all get out of here, look at the time stamp, by sunday morning, at the latest. wind, let's get to that next, i don't want you to disregard that, that's very, very big story with this storm. it is not just snow. we get through the day without many major hims. but the winds starts to pick up here tonight. it is at its height, i would
4:45 am
say, tomorrow morning, when the door of the -- core of the storm is ramming up over us, looking at sustained winds possibly into the 40's, down near some of the shore towns. that is easily going to lead to some beach errosion, and definitely coastal flood concerns come into play with this, as well, when you factor in the high tide and the full moon that we have got going on out there. that's going to be something that even lingers into sunday. but the brunt comes saturday. soap, still expecting essentially the same story here, 12-16 inches for the greater philadelphia area, and lower totals as you head toward the outskirts. that said, when does it get out of here? we said sunday morning, then just much quieter pattern, even little milder, too, headed into next week, jim, back to you. >> thanks, katie. big five scrambling it schedule because of the snowstorm. three saturday games now sunday games. so, here's the sunday schedule, is villanova against providence at 1:00 at the wells fargo center, st. joe's takes on lasalle at 5:00 sunday at the tom gola arena, and temple hoses number
4:46 am
8smu sunday, but the time yet to be announce the. there are details on cbsphilly.com. and here is a little something to watch while you are burried in the snow. sunday's afc championship game between the denver broncos and new england patriots is at 3:00. the party start at 2:00 with the nfl today, all of it right here on cbs-3. >> a lot to watch. waiting for that snow. >> exactly. going to be new look to the famous westminster dog show next month. >> getting a look at some of the new breeds in the competition. the 140th westminster show will feature seven newcomb ers, the most since the year 2,000. among them, are the burgomasco, the miniature american shepherd. competition is february 15th, 16th, madison square garden with over 3,000 dogs from all 50 state. >> always such fun to watch. >> exactly. look at those. >> oh, all of those little faces. >> still ahead on "eyewitness news" this morning, car recall, carseat recall to tell you about. >> first though here's what's
4:47 am
coming up tonight on cbs-3.
4:48 am
4:49 am
checking out storm scan3 right now, as we keep our eye on that storm, you can see it form there, a blizzard warning takes effect starting tonight. that system is expected to dump a foot to 16 inches every snow around philadelphia, it is now moving in from the south. katie is going to bring us to up date with the forecast, and new snow totals coming up in just a few minutes. >> now, 4:49. time for check on business news. >> money watch's hena daniels joins us from the new york stock exchange, not only friday, also good news finally on wall street. let's hear about that. good morning. >> finally, guys, happy friday. the price of oil is on the rebound, benchmark us crude, just more than 4% yesterday, closing shy of $30 a barrel. just the day before us crude took its biggest one day since
4:50 am
september, crude, benchmark for international oil, rose almost 5%, still, the price of oil is at its lowest point, since 2003. jim, erika? >> so, hena, important recall parent need to know about this morning. what can you tell us about it? >> that's right, recall of more than 71,000 infant carseats gets underway today. the caring handles on the seats made by bleightack, child safety can break. recall affect the be safe 35, be safe 35 elite and the b safe 35 travel system made from october 2014 to july 2015, at least one infant has been injured already. erika, jim? >> good heads up there, hena, thank you. >> i'll post that on my facebook page later today. meanwhile, katie has updated tracking of the storm. we'll be right back.
4:51 am
4:52 am
all eyes on our impending winter storm. it is turning into a monster right now.
4:53 am
and you can really see this well define storm on storm scan3 at this point. yesterday, if you many, you were with us, it didn't look all that impressive. well, now it does. lots of moisture, lots of strength with this. and it is going to be basically just migrating north with time here. it will be stuck with us for good long window of opportunity to pile up some snow. high winds warnings, are another issue that go into effect for us here, tonight through saturday night, that's specific to cape may county, sussex county, also coastal flood warnings, in effect across the shore point. so that's going to be a big concern with this. now, i am not saying you are not going to see wind inch lan either. just strongest near the shore point. but we could see the gusts peak as high as 40, 50 miles per hour, hence the blizzard concerns, because you will need that wind to blow strongly for a good long lent of time. when you have got the snow either on the ground, blowing and drifting or actually falling from the sky, it can absolutely lead to trouble when trying to travel. so, my advice, just stay in if you can. really don't want you out here in this if you don't have to be. it is heavy wet snow too. that means it could bring down power lines with no problem. as that heavy wet snow sticks
4:54 am
to the power lines and trees, obviously, it can just be too much weight for those things to bear. now, looking forward, things do thankfully clear out by sunday, but, i could see this actually exiting as late as maybe 4:00 a.m., 5:00 a.m., sunday. so it will be a nice long storm system, again, thankfully coming on a weekend if you can hunker down to do so, one more time here, for the greater philadelphia area, blizzard warnings take effect tonight, expecting 12-16 inches around that whole region, meisha. >> all right, so during that time, best if you can stay off the roadways, some of it is going to be inevitable, and i would pack that emergency kit, just in case, for now, though, the roads are look nice and dry. good morning, everyone, happy friday. here is a look at the boulevard. headlights moving in the southbound direction at wissahickon avenue. looking good, nice and quiet as it should right now for a friday morning. blue route taillights moving in the northbound direction before route one again another area looking very nice, very quiet. the vine, all open, westbound is open, eastbound, that's where we are starting to seat
4:55 am
majority of the headlights slowly start to build. so far the vine also looking very good this morning. accident 422 eastbound near royersford, south trap road under pass, and also, we've got this downed pole, connestoga road closed, because of an earlier accident. that accident has cleared, but we still have that downed pole here, between bacton hill road and spring valley road. construction 681, left lane is blocked, until 5:00 a.m. so any minute now that should be clearing, and of course, i'll let you know as soon that is it does. erika, jim, back to you. >> meisha, now let's get a check of some of our stories on sister station "kyw news radio" 1006 is following. penndot has just started testing a tracking system in several dozen trucks that will let you see what roads they've cleared and when. peco is preparing to handle lots of outages, when the winter storm strikes the region. and, project home is upping its outreach to the homeless, in advance of the weekend's weather. check in at two, three, four times a day, on "kyw news radio" 10660 on your a.m.
4:56 am
dial. >> hey, have you heard it is official, the piano man officially coming back to philadelphia this summer. love him. >> for the third year in a row billy joel will fill the seat at sit accepts bank park, live philly nation will announce joel will perform at the ballpark saturday july 9th, mark your calendar, tickets go on sale next friday at 10:00 a.m. sharp. >> been want to go see him for the longest time, jim. >> great concert. katie yelling yes, road trip for all every us! >> coming up in the next hour here on "eyewitness news", liver team coverage of the major winter storm continues. we'll check in with our reporters across the region and katie has the latest forecast, as we brace for the first major snowfall of the season. >> we will let you know what you can expect in your neighborhood, when the snow starts to fall. we're back at the top of the hour. stay with us.
4:57 am
4:58 am
4:59 am
>> good friday morning to you, right now the calm before the storm as we look live at storm scan3. most of the area will be under a blizzard warning tonight, as that major winter storm barrels up the east coast. before the first flakes even fall, penndot is gearing up for the storm. the salt trucks are all loaded up and ready to go when the roads start to get slick. >> and, here's what you are going to see in just a few hours, new video of the storm already hitting charlotte, north carolina, and now just making it way toward us, inch by inch. good morning, it is friday, january 22, i'm erika von tiehl. >> i'm jim donovan. we'll have live team coverage of the first major snowfall of the season, katie and justin are tracking the storm, meisha is watching the roads, and justin finch shows you how the city getting ready for the snow. let's get right to katie for the very latest on how much snow we can expect.
5:00 am
>> that's right. you know what, i have to tell you, jim, things haven't changed too much in the way of our expectations for this storm, when it comes to wind, when it comes to snowfall totals, when it comes to timing. all of that has actually remained quite consistent. which makes it a breeze, at least, to help forecast. but, that said, there are still some things that may be tweaked or be fine tuned with this, as it gets ever closer. so, let's go on out there, show you what we know right now. storm scan at the moment, at least that's empty. so you have the quiet weather, call it, enjoy, or at least prepare for the time being. but, the tell tail signs of life off to the southwest on saturday light, the clouds beginning to thicken, and here it come. the leading edge of this storm, brink withing it some heavy snow already into portions every west-southwestern virginia, so really is only matter of time, the brunt of this storm system, likely hits the baltimore-dc area. but we are, nonetheless, now upgrade today both blizzard and winter storm warnings, here in our area. not into effect yet. actually got the rest of the entire day actually, before
