8:00 am
good sunday morning. clean up begins today. that will weekend storm may be gone, but we are still feeling its effect. in south philly you see the snow piled up. oh, cars to dig out right now. >> from the city to the shore, the winter whallop sent water from the bay flooding into shore communities. we have a live look at hard hit sea isle city coming up.
8:01 am
>> and the cbs-3 mobile weather lab right now, live this morning, checking out area roads, and they're certainly slippery this morning. meisha has been warning us about the black ice, so stay home if you can. if you have to go out, definitely be careful. good morning, it is sunday january 24th, i'm erika von tiehl. >> i'm rahel solomon. let's get your sunday morning started with the latest from weather and traffic together. justin, meisha here with the conditions as everyone is waking up, guys, so excited about the sun today. even just little sun. >> we'll take it. >> right on. >> yes, like justin said earlier it, won't heat us up too much, so probably not going to melt all of the ice and snow that we're seeing, and really, right now, it is still very slip rip out there. in fact, we just saw live spin out not too long ago, happened on the 42 freeway, so dangerous conditions still, although we do have the sun, so just fin, that's our silver lining i suppose. >> we'll take it. >> we will take that. even tomorrow, even potentially tuesday morning, still, there will be icy spots. because we will get slow melt. we will get up to freezing today. areas in the sun, do melt, but then just all refreeze z again
8:02 am
tonight. so do you have watch out for the untreated surfaces over the next day or two. but the storm is gone, long gone, off shore, clear skies over the entire region, so if you can get out of your house maybe enjoy some skiing and riding in the poconos, excellent conditions. check it out, allentown you guys top the list, 31.9 inches of snow that sets all time record, king of prussia over 2 feet at 26.1, into new jersey. bellmawr, 20 inches, 14 and a half in in williamstown, lindenwald almost 14, delaware, new castle county, was hit the hard it, 16.1 at the new castle airport, west dover coming in at 14.2 inches, and officially in philadelphia, just shy of 2 feet, 22.4, that's the fourth largest snowstorm on record. coastal flood warning continues until noon. so we have one more high tide to go through. which is current pretty much about now, across new jersey and delaware. so that's an area of concern. temperatures, it is cold, there you go, teens, 20's, so it is very icy out still. and over the next few days,
8:03 am
still icy travel, as i mention, melting during the day, everything refreeze z at night, meisha earlier showing spin out, that will be a problem, black ice out, there so what's the latest? not whole lot of traffic yet. that's a good thing, right? >> yes. the problem we're seeing right now, the good thing, but the problem we're seeing rightful, because we have that sun, sometimes it gives us this misleading al your we can go out travel at posted speeds which i want to remind you we still have speed restrictions? place right now, 45 piles per hour on the highways, 25, 25, on all of the bridges right now. so still very icy. and right now it sounds like we have penndot secretary of transportation, leslie richards, on the phone, good morning, leslie, you know, the storm has now passed us by. but there is definitely a lot of snow and ice still on the roadways, so what are penndot's clean up plans for today given the fact it is still so icy outside? >> still have full-out effort, 450 trucks on the five county area, we will be working all day today.
8:04 am
as you said, speed restrictions are still in place. crews are out there. we are using more salt now that the snow has been cleared. a lot of winds last night. so we're dealing with a lot of drifting today. we will be trying to push back a lot of that snow that fell into our roadways, and off the road again. secondary routes, still snow packed, so obviously yesterday with the intensity of the storm and the duration of the storm, we really are concentrated on the interstates. then heavier volume roads, today we will be getting out to the secondary roads, and we will be working out, you know, all day today, and getting ready for our monday commute. >> speaking of today, people eager to get out, maybe runner around today, any advice for commuters hitting the roadways today? >> yes, still staying home this morning, don't have to get out, you know, roads are passable. if you can give us to this afternoon, that would be best, our equipment operators can
8:05 am
operate best without any other traffic, and allows us to do our work quickly and safely, some roads still closed so don't expect all of the roads to be open. but roads will be passable today, always drive with caution, and please be very careful conditions are not perfect that's for sure. >> keep the roadways clear, especially for today. thank you for taking time to talk with us today and of course keeping everyone safe. we do all on our end, as well. >> sound good. have a great day. >> you as well. all right, so, erika, rahel it, sounds like, you know, they are going to do all that they can do on penndot side to get these road surfaces treated with some salt. there it is. >> so the excuse, don't go out today, wait until tomorrow. thank you. >> today some of the favorite
8:06 am
resorts at the jersey shore are worried about another rounds of tidal flooding. >> oh, and high winds also knocked out power, so not just the flooding but also, turn the heat on, too, we want to continue our eye on the storm coverage with jan carabeo out at sea isle city, good morning, jan. >> good morning. all eyes on the high tide, scheduled to roll in here to shiite city right around 8:30 this morning we're coming to you liver from the corner of west jersey, central avenues. it is just a wall of water out here. so the main concern this next, this next high tide, will bring in even more flooding i spoke to the mayor. wind still how long, too, does not help. so until the high tide comes in, flood waters recede, the mayor continuing to ask people to stay indoors this morning, and to not drive-thru this water. meantime, this morning, the mayor and police chief will
8:07 am
also survey the damage to property, as well as the beach, he says, he has foot of water in his basement, a lot of his friends, and a lot of the businesses in this area have a lot of water in their businesses, as women, so a lot of clean up ahead. >> the beaches were hit pretty hard but the new do you know system did a great job, did the job they were supposed to, ocean did not breach anywhere throughout our community, so we have a lot of clean up, a loot of work to do, but we will be ready, we will be okay. >> so you heard the mayor say the dunes did their job, also an update on power outages this morning. the mayor tells us, that sea isle city, is back on line. but again, thousands of people in cape may county alone are still without power. and here in sea isle city, a lot of clean up is ahead. so again, waiting for that last high tied to roll in around 8:30, again, possibly
8:08 am
moderate flooding on top of everything. you see behind me, rahel, erika, back into you. >> hopefully high tide isn't too bad, thanks, jan. meanwhile in philadelphia still may be difficult getting around the city today on public transportation. >> yes, septa as gradually resuming services, buses and trolley services relaunch this morning. some bus routes may remain out of service if street conditions don't improve. now regional rails and norristown high speed lines, also trying to get those back on track. philadelphia international airport there trying to get back to normal, as well, after the storm. got to clear up all of those runways, justin finch joins us now where number of airlines hope it have some departures and arrivals later today. how is it looking right now? >> erika, rahel, good morning, very much touch and go here at the airport. this is a transition day, a gradual return to service here, what the airport is aiming for, if you don't believe me, take look around here. hardly anyone here, check in counters, lines, very much inch empty this morning. look at the boards here too. we've seen some progress in
8:09 am
the last half hour. many more on time flights scheduled on that board, how much, many of them seem to be leaving in the late afternoon. so as you can see, the hope is to get some flights out today. now, we're just a day out of course from the storm that blew in some 20 inches of snow here at the airport, so, on friday, all flight canceled for saturday, heavy push made to move passengers to and from their destin aces onofre to avoid being stuck here saturday. now today the work begins to get those flights back up and running again, and we do know that flights will leave and arrive on these runways at hundreds of staff through the storm to clear and ready for today. however, still, many of those flights are not set to leave on time. that is also due to the domino effect when weather affect airports across the count rip so that's to be considered here. we met family here at the airport, the russo family, bound for after rondo, but as the hours tick by, their take-off seems less and less
8:10 am
likely. >> we were supposed to go to orlando, to get a cruise ship, to the bahamas. but guess what? looks like the cruise ship may go without us. >> and we're hoping that's not the case miss russo over there at the front counter, that's her carrier, been on the phone and on loin with them throughout the morning here. she has learned the hard way that you can't always trust, she says, what you see on line, your best bet is to check in with your carrier directly to see what is happening with your flight. specially, in a situation like this one, all the carriers have hotlines going this morning, as well the, as on line service, so if you have to fly out today or arrive somewhere today, your best bet is going to be not show up to the airport instead check in first. rahel, erika, back over to you. >> justin real good advice there. not enough to just check on line. do you have directly call. do you have directly reach out. >> absolutely, and hey we can help i get around in the snowstorm. go to the website for the
8:11 am
latest information from the airport, septa, new jersey transit and beyond g to cbsphilly.com many click on travel guide. >> back in the city resident have quite a clean up on their hands this morning. >> yes, in south philadelphia, where some of the streets are narrow, it may be even more difficult. cherri gregg from sister station "kyw news radio" is live at tenth and washington with a look at the neighborhood. how are you doing? >> reporter: i'm good, rahel and erika, good morning. yes, there are piles and piles of snow here. guess what? there is no place to put it. okay? and so i'm here with mark sullivan. how are you doing? good to see you. mark has been working out here, trying to clear a path through the streets so folks can passover this mound, kids playing in, tunnels going through the mound of snow. mark what's it been like for you? it is cold out here. >> yes, it is, yes, and trying to walk through it is even harder, then, you know, helping out with moving this stuff around. trying to find a place to put
8:12 am
it like you said. >> yes. >> little rough. little colder than yelled, but travel in the snow yesterday, just like fatigue. >> yes, and so, south philadelphia is a very special place for those folks who don't understand, how high do the snow drift get here when you are trying to walk through the city? >> going from ankle burried up to knee almost depending what street you step-off of. >> now, if you look a what we are dealing with the cars, mark, come over here with me, we will show you because people have to scrape off the sidewalks, and the plows are coming through dealing with the streets, cars coming through, cars literally wedged in. so savesies a big thing over there a guy saving his space after he dug it out for over an hour, saving his space with a old satellite dish. why is that something that people over here respect? >> well, because, you know how hard it is parking in the city? specially with all of the one way streets and, you know, there is barley any parking lot around here.
8:13 am
soap, you know, when one person moves, it is like ya, you can holds that spot. >> yes. >> you can use it around here, use just about anything that people won't move. >> and all satellite dish, it fits that category. do you respect savesies? >> yes, i know how it is, especially when you can only park on one side, but houses on both sides. >> so you got a lot of residents, lots of cars, no where to park. and then you have lot of snow and no where to put it, then you ends up with these mounds that we showed you, mark is working on getting rid of this, the snow emergency in philadelphia, still in effect, stay home, you know, dig your car out it, could take quite a while, right? >> yes definitely bring water. >> so you can be ready for tomorrow. so good luck, mark. and back to you, rahel, and erika, as you can see, a loft work to be done out here. >> oh, ya, savingsies hot topic in philadelphia. >> yes, a-plus for getting creative no stool, no chair, no cone, satellite dish, god created there. >> yes, and i'll give you closer look later. really hilarious. >> all right, cherri gregg,
8:14 am
thank you. >> so coming up this morning cbs-3 mobile weather lab, out right now checking out the roads. kyla, i found your tweet you saw justin jamming mix cd. >> reporter: we did, we were jamming to his electronic dance music, my photographer jim, really addition it. hey, speaking of digging, a loft digging outgoing on. take a look at the roads, they're still not in great condition. happy to say that the sun's coming up, and people are staying off the roads. we'll tell you ball it when we come back. stay with us, cbs-3 coming right back. >> thanks, kai l then what is it about montgomery county that makes residents want it jump in the snow? we'll tell you how this polar plunge became a family affair.

check this out right now, doo bad this is in 3d. weather lab getting whitewashing in collings dale, you my say. kyla, photographer jim spearing, going all out, guys, thanks so much. cruising around, with the driving conditions, and digging out from this huge storm. my goodness. >> my goodness, and kyla, it looks like you guys had to do a little digging out yourselves? >> yes, women, i tell you, few people that are out now. but a lot of people are staying in. and the ones that you do see out are the people trying to clear up the roads. it helps them if everybody heads in. i wanted to show you, we're in haddonfield, kings highway, interesting. you see the guy here who is trying to get the snow off the street. then you see some joggers, straight ahead of me. out for their morning run, not about to be deterred by this weather. you know, i think jogging might be little dangerous too this morning. but certainly, driving is not great. as you can see, a loft these roads still need to be plowed
8:18 am
further. we're not seeing such clear roads yet. we're coming up upon our joggers here. and, you know, i think the best bet is to stay home. do you see few cars venturing out. most of them are out here, to try and clear the roads. few people have kind of come by, going very slow, that's the key to it, as well. so it is real a better idea if you just kind of stay at home, keep the hot cocoa going, get the fireplace going, chill out for the first part of the day. let those crews get out there, clear out the roads. not whole lot of fun to be out here, right, little icy, it is very chilly, and it is just kind after mess right now. but i think things will be getting much bet they are afternoon. guys, back to you. >> all right, kai last hopefully a loft people taking your word for it and staying home, yes. >> so if there is a day it skip the morning jog, justin, today is the day. you're loud not to run today, do you think? >> if you're used to that, you skip the routine, you know, funny, ed connor our weather watchers say good morning for a jog, what are you talking about? he said when it is this cold, the snow just crunches under your shoes, you actually have
8:19 am

8:22 am
