♪ now at 11:00, a baby was kissed by the pope during his philadelphia visit and her rare condition has now disappeared. tonight that baby's dr. speaks only to "eyewitness news" for the very first time. also as we dig out from this record winter storm, some people are getting very creative with a mountains of snow in their backyard. vittoria woodill goes flying down a luge course created by a local family. >> with philadelphia still

overwhelmed by snow the city is forced to cancel school for another day as the clean up continues tonight. good evening, i'm jessica dean. >> i'm ukee washington. in closing effects public and arch diocesan schools. hundreds of other delays and closings for tomorrow as well you can see those at the bottom of your screen. in the meantime crews working around the clock to clear roads but they still have days of work ahead. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco in center city right now where many streets are still untouched by plows tonight. diana? >> reporter: ukee, still a lot to do tonight as these snow piles start building up big trucks are coming in and moving all of this snow out of here, but in lot of neighborhoods in the city tonight, day two of cleanup still looks a lot like day one and that has frustration mounting. nearly two daze days since the blizzard of 2016 stopped dumping snow and the cleanup may be underway. just not fast enough for many in south philly. >> can't go to work. can't do anything. can't go nowhere. >> reporter: sea of snow has

trapped cars and stranded entire blocks south of washington. >> the city always for gets about us. that's the way it's always been in south philly. >> the streets are terrible even walk dag, you know, to doctor's appointment it was terrible -- streets are terrible. horrible much this is the worst we've seen it. >> kathy heller got no response from 311 so neighbors on door four street spent $600 and hired their own plow her car stuck halfway down the block and her husband has to get to work in the morning. >> a lot of are people angry with the mayor. >> the city has been moving snow off main roads for more than 24 hours. the mayor says he understands the frustration. >> it's important to you and if you're not out yet you're frustrated and i recognize that. but we have to -- we have to go through this methodical way to make sure the city gets back to work as soon as possible. >> reporter: front end loaders are philly the dump trucks with snow and bringing it to five locations citywide this one broad washington. fairmount most roads are waiting for those trucks.

so in the meantime dan elliot grabbed a shovel. >> i have work on wednesday and kind of tired taking the subway already. >> instead of tossing it in the street he's using garbage can to unload out of the way of cars or the employee he hopes is coming soon. >> i was going to go to the gym after this but i got my workout in. >> reporter: he certainly did like a lot of people around the city tonight. the mayor is asking everyone to have patience with the plowing he says they will get there. they're concentrating on the mape roads and they're going to the secondary and side roads also the parking authority will not be charging at meters and kiosks again tomorrow. we're live in center city tonight diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you diana. septa says several region rail trains canceled tonight due to manpower issues but most bus routes are back on track many of them are work wig detour in the aftermath of the storm. broad street and market frankford lines are running on or close to schedule. septa does warn there could be parking issues at some rail

stations from all the snow. operations are largely back to normal tonight at philadelphia international airport. most flights arrived dean parred on time today. that was not the case over the weekend. on saturday, american airlines canceled all flights and scores of flights were canceled at other airports on the east coast affected by the storm. amtrak says service between new york and washington is about 80% restored this evening. the rail system is still operating on modified schedule and travelers are urged to check their train status on amtrak's website. massive cleanup effort underway at the jersey shore. this weekend storm brought not only snow but also coastal flooding and beach erosion from many much of cape may county. several shore experienced record flood levels in north wildwood as many as 150 people had to be rescued from their homes and for some it was like reliving hurricane sandy. >> we got hit in scene little bit, and we just got hit a little harder this time. so the rugs that were new and the floors were new are coming

back up. >> it's de ja vu, because, you know, do you it and you get it back together, and no one anticipated that it would be this bad. so it's kind of heartbreaking. >> new jersey lieutenant governor kim, and commissioner bob martin from the department of environmental protection toured several beach towns today to assess damage. in the meantime governor chris christie who's campaigning for president in new hampshire was asked tonight why he did not stick around in the aftermath of the storm? >> there's been one county that's flooded in the state. one county that was cape may county. the one county that flooded i don't know where from all over the state since we have 21 counties where that's happened. second, i don't want you expect me to do. you want me to go down there with a mop. >> christie's approval rating among new jersey voters limited since he began his presidential campaign. a recent poll shows his approval

rating is at 31%. >> the circumstance tonight is temperatures are dropping and that means some of the snow that healthed is now freezing that could make for a tricky morning commute. meteorologist kate bilo on the sky deck with more on the icy conditions. kate. >> that's right, ukee. we're seeing a lot of damp spots on the roads i was just looking down in the parking lot you can see some areas glistening looking like melted snow it looks wet but when temperatures are this close to freezing and in many spots below freezing, that's not a wet spot on the road that is more than likely going to be ice and it can cause not only a has czar on the roadways but a trip and fall hazard or slip and fall has czar as you step out the door early tomorrow morning. temperature wise 29 at the morning in the city. 26 in allentown. 27 in reading. not as big of a concern in our south and east suburbs down the shore temperatures well above freezing it will be cycle we'll be seeing through the next several days. temperatures in the afternoon get above freezing the snow begins to melt but we go back below freezing pretty much every night this week. so any of that snow melt

refreezes and causes black ice and concerns on the roadways. in addition to that we've got fog to tell you about and here comes our next system. not a lot of moisture those showers over the midwest get here tomorrow. coming up we'll track them and when to expect the showers and any truth to the rumor more of a potential system late in the week? more on that coming up as well. back inside to you. >> kate, see in you a bit, thank you. pennsylvania turnpike commission has lurched a review of its response to the total standstill on the road during this weekend's snowstorm. more than 500 cars, trucks and buses were stuck on a 16-mile stretch near pittsburgh when that storm hit. vehicles there did not move for more than 24 hours. the turnpike chairman has apologized and says all tolls for stranded drivers will be refund the. the snow took a heavy toll at a church in downingtown causing the roof to cave in. chopper three over the scene. >> this happen at the calvary fellowshifellowship church. the pastor drove flew the blizzard after learning the sprinklers had gone off inside the church.

when he arrived he found the roof collapsed and the church's 1100 seat auditorium. crews are working to secure the structure while repairs can be made. and the pastor says it's just a minor set back. >> to me, how we respond and enter act with each other and how we interact with god is way more important than a hole in the roof. >> fortunately no one was injury in that collapse. the elmwood park zoo is dealing with significant damage from this weekend's snowfall. chopper three over the scene in norristown the birds of paradise exhibit has partially collapsed. the good news all the animals were in a separate building and were not harm. and the big dig out continues tonight in allentown. officialing the city got nearly 32-inches of snow. that's a record breaker. all of that snow, though, is pose ago real challenge to road crews trying to clean it all up. secondary roads are still under feet of snow. allentown's mayor asked for patience and also help urging

contractors who want to help to contact the city. other parts of the east core are digging out as well n washington, d.c. huge mounds of snow are piled next to the roads conditions are still so treacherous that schools and federal government buildings will remain closed until wednesday. the district is warning residents to be patient and stay safe. the nation's capitol got 24-inches of snow and the cleanup could take days. in new york city, crews are so overwhelmed that the city is now hiring people to shovel. they're looking for anyone 18 years of age or older whose able to work and paying 13.50 an ho hour. the snow certainly causing a lot of problems but it was an oil spill that prompted officials to shut down a portion of the schuylkill river trail in philadelphia. chopper three over that scene near market street. authorities say more than 4,000 gallons of oil leaked from a generator here 24th and mark. of that, about 250 gallons actually made it into the river. the icy water helped contain some of the spill which did not affect drinking water.

crews hope to have the mess cleaned up later this week. a little girl from buck county continues to inspire four months after a surprise kiss from pope francis put her in the spotlight. >> tonight we are hearing from her doctor for the first time. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt has been following the story and has the latest on the little girl who will not give up. >> reporter: it was happen penn stance pope francis blocks from independence hall stopped his motorcade to kiss little gianna on her head. little did he know that now famous kiss was just centimeters from a brain tumor she's fought since birth. >> i cried. >> that was the parents telling their story to "eyewitness news" a day after the kiss. we met them again in november after they learn her tumor slang so much it's barely visible on her latest mri. >> gianna continues continues to make progress every day. we're just trying to maintain

the normal life. >> the family feel positive energy as they approach another mri. scheduled for neck week. >> hopefully we'll continue to see more progress. there's no magic bullets when you're going through this kind of stuff. as long as you're going forward and it slow steady progress. >> her brain tumor isn't a typical brain tumor. >> how rare is her condition? >> her condition is really rare. >> dr. shaw is her doctor at children's hospital of philadelphia. gianna suffers from a blood disorder that typically causes lesions on the skin. hers is not only in her brain, but on the brain stem. making surgery impossible. dr. shaw says gianna is one of about 40 people ever recorded to have this specific condition. right now her treatment is chemotherapy. once a month. >> i see her with a smile on her face and playing with her parents and really just a very very loving child.

>> reporter: the family almost didn't go see pope francis worrying gianna might get sick they called dr. shaw who gave them the go ahead. >> i don't think any of us realized that this was going to be the out come. >> an out come that played on television screens across the globe. >> i think francis is a living saint to us he gave a sign that god is with us through this entire journey. >> journey the family hopes to turn into something positive for other families. >> they're in our prayers every single day but we just -- we want to do more. >> now the family is doing more. they set newspaper foundation in gianna's game her middle name is grace and for the love of grace foundation is a non-profit aimed at raising wearness for his tee yo sigh ptosis and brain tumors. >> everyone says, you know, she's blessed to have us but i think we're blessed to have her. >> i have met gianna three times in four months and i've seen so many positive changes with little gianna. her vocal cord is working again much she started to hear again.

new developments tonight in the cocktail waitress controversy at one of atlantic casino. new jersey state supreme court ruled today against cocktail waitresses at the borgata refusing to review their case. in 2013 appeals court ruled the casino can regulate how much the waitresses weigh and the cassone know's personal appearance standards were lawful. two waitresses have been fired over the years for violating cass zen know policy which prohibits servers from gaining or losing more than 7% of their body weight. as we all hunkered down for this week historic storm a local hospital delivered a roar number

of members. the hospital of the university of pennsylvania had 44 babies during the snowstorm. nurse at hup talked with health reporter stephanie stahl about all the special deliveries. >> i don't know. i guess just the blizzard and it being a full moon we're always busy when there's full moon. it just created crazy combination and we had a lot of deliveries. >> there's no direct scientific evidence to explain why this happened but there is some limited research i'm told showing a lower barometric pressure associated with a storm can instigate labor. there you go. how about that? they're beautiful. sport you used to see in the olympioh limb wint olympics andt around here. vittoria wood sill live in a backyard that has everyone coming out for fast fun. tori. >> reporter: well, everyone is coming out because tomorrow is -- snow day! >> that's right. it's a snow day tomorrow. the kids have off and they're

can see they had whiteout conditions as the snow just piled up right through saturday and that snow still of course blanketing much of the northea northeast. take look at that sharp cut off not much in central new york state even as many spots got over 2 feet of snow just north and west of philadelphia with the lehigh valley being really the big winner and berks county as well. reading actually got .1 more inch of snow than allentown. 32-inches in reading. 31.9 in allentown. here's the neck front that will impact us a few showers lurking off to the west right now. they won't get here until tomorrow afternoon and temperatures well above freezing when the showers get who are. we're not talking about freezing rain or freezing drizzle. just some showers, some clouds and fog tomorrow. right now 32 at the airport. 19 in allentown. 26 in reading. anything that looks wet on the roads tonight or early tomorrow morning that's going to be ice. please take it slow out there tomorrow and watch out when you step out the door on your walkway or sidewalk in front of your house as well. on wednesday it's quiet, chilly and breezy those showers move on out.

thursday is mostly sunny and a lot of chatter about a storm that will form off the coast of the carolinas. models over the weekend try to bring it into the area but now it's looking more and more likely that once that storm forms right about here, this is advancing trough to the north will christ out to sea and while we may pick up flurry from that late thursday into friday it should not be an esche issue for the area. there's good news. i'll continue to waist and bring you any updates. no to go worry about. patchy clouds tonight. patchy fog as well. 29 in overnight low. tuesday are clouds, fog, not the nicest looking day watch for stray shower in the afternoon. not a lot of moisture with this front so there's just really stray showers nothing more than that. wednesday 39. thursday at 36 but notice those overnight lows in the 20s through the end week. that's a refreeze. anything that melts will freeze up again. icy spots through the end of the week. flurries friday but take a look at the weekend what a beautiful weekend. mid 40s with sunshine both
