lot more moisture witt further south you go. heavy rain into the the deep south tonight, showers a little bit more spotty heading up into virginia and for our area showers around but few and far between this evening but not a lot of moisture to work w as we zoom in a few spotty showers heading toward the city, into chester county, montgomery couldn't i and if you are going out flip the windshield wipers a couple times tonight. as these showers continue north and west, cannot rule out snow flakes mix nothing but no accumulation anticipated tonight. they are mainly off to the south and east for remainder of the evening where it is warm enough where this is all rain. overnight that moisture continues to stream from the south. we have a few showers around 11:00 mainly down the shore and into the overnight hours, two or 3:00 a.m., notice a little bit of snow around d.c. snow shower cannot be ruled out. mostly talking about rain tonight and then it clears out by tomorrow morning, sun comes back, and it will be colder, not for long though.

we are tracking a warm up toward weekend. we will have more with the seven day forecast, coming up, jessica. kate, thanks very much. turning to our other top stories tonight, this evening many are blasting governor chris christie for miss response to the severe flood ago long the jersey shore. we have live team three coverage of the clean up and controversy. we will begin with new jersey reporter cleve bryan in hard hit wildwood, cleve. >> reporter: good evening. people felt that governor christie should have come to the area to see the damage for himself, but he didn't come, and they don't like what he had to say, about what he saw. >> well, members of his cabinet were toring storm damaged areas of new jersey on monday governor chris christie was out of state on the presidential campaign trail but even though he didn't see the situation firsthand, his assessment was less than sympathetic. >> i don't know what you expect me to do do you want me to go down there with a mop. >> reporter: today hard hit wildwood had a rebuttal. outside this bike shop

christie got a reserved parking sign, mop and a box of doughnuts as an invitation. >> it is bullying. it is very offensive. no i'm's not expecting him to pick up a mop. nobody down here is but he is just blowing it off like there is no damage. >> reporter: victoria who lost thousands of dollars worth of property from 3 feet of water in her home wants governor's help but not humor. >> i was a little upset, because a mob will not take care of that. >> reporter: christie got himself in the trouble with the the mayor of north wildwood who said he was crazy for comparing flooding over the weekend to super storm sandy n several towns damage and storm surge were worse than sandy. and with widespread power outages, first responders rescued hundreds of people from their homes. after rosenellie voiced his displeasure on social media, the governor called to a apologize. >> a lot of elect officials don't typically apologize. i appreciate the fact that he did that and, you know, i have

been saying for days we just need to get work done here. >> reporter: he says that he wasn't so much offended about being crazy, he just didn't like the idea that people who have lost so much felt like the governor was making light of their situation. he also felt like perhaps a little disrespectful to the first respond hours left their families, to go out in dangerous conditions to make those rescues. we are live from wildwood, cleve bryan, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". our team coverage continues now with "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt in trenton. as we heard the governor apologized to day. >> reporter: yes, he did apologize back here in trenton at the state house. he usually is in new hampshire where he has been lately, campaigning for the presidency of the united states but this was his first public apology, he said, the the entire thing, ukee was a joke. >> i don't know what you expect me to do go down there with a mop. >> reporter: just a few word governor chris christie

started a fire storm after insisting on the campaign trail that he didn't need to physically be on the jersey shore with flooding victims. he then used the word crazy when he talking about north wildwood mayor patrick rosenel lo but governor took a different tone tuesday at the capitol in trenton after i asked him about his comments in new hampshire. >> i got carried away at a town hall meeting. it is not first time i have said something that i late's pol guyed for. the it doesn't happen often but it happens. >> reporter: christie called the mayor earlier this morning. >> i called and apologized to him. he accepted my apology. i understand he told the press, i apologized, that is fine for me. my apology was because i felt badly about it. >> reporter: while christie may not be the governor says his team is on the ground helping anyone affect by the winter storm that hit over weekend. christie says he is frustrated , several mayors called the storm worse as sandy there was in the a thing about what happened on friday and saturday that even resembled sandy.

philly.com. classes resume tomorrow for all philadelphia public and archdiocese schools. you can check bottom of the screen for latest closures and delays as well. meantime fill will a water department workers hit the streets today. "eyewitness news" at the broad and carpet inner south philadelphia. workers cleared packed snow from storm drains so as the the snow melts, it has somewhere to go. >> a all this water will start backing up, and it will be all over the intersections, and citizens will not be happy. >> reporter: update on the plowing operations in philadelphia sit officials say 80 percent of the roadways are passable. their goalies to have remaining 20 percent finished by tomorrow night. chopper three spotted plows clearing lanes in pottstown, montgomery county this was on route 422 westbound near arm and hammer boulevard. penndot briefly halted traffic so that work could continue. take a look at the icy delaware river from chopper three, along some sections of the river, chunks of ice, stretched from the pennsylvania side to the new jersey side. the the coastguard has gone

out dale toy break up the ice and keep channel open to passing ships. aftermath of the storm brought problems other than snow covered streets and transit delays. with philadelphia schools closed now for two days, it is feared thousands of children are without food. "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos joins us from district headquarters with the details, greg. >> reporter: estimates show some 4,000 children here in the city of philadelphia who are considered home less. for many of them, no school means no food. as many children throughout philadelphia, enjoyed that one last drive down the hill before class resumes on wednesday, advocates say some less fortunate students may be suffering. >> the day of where willie go and what willie eat. >> reporter: the the homeless add row castcy group estimates that there are at least 4300 homeless students in philadelphia a. some of them end up in the covenant house for shelter and a hot meal.

>> schools are closed, that could be the only meal that person will eat that day. >> some kid have problems at home and they can eat at school and have regular communication with regular people. >> reporter: so now graduated diamond, says that the free three meals provided by philadelphia school district are life savers for many. but for the last two days schools here in the sit the eye shut down, and despite emergency kitchens opened up at ten washington d.c. schools to provide those in meals there, here in philadelphia that is apparently not possible. >> why not so in philadelphia. >> we don't have the the infrastructure to do that and we don't have the ability, streets are not safe enough for students to actually walk to the school itself for the meals are. also, the staff. >> it is a real lost when schools close. >> reporter: kathy fisher with the greater coalition of hunger says her organization phones have been ringing off the hook since the storm. families looking for food, and philly schools can learn a lesson from the d.c. school

district. >> we would love for philadelphia to consider that. >> reporter: now school district officials do tell me they will look into this for the the possibility during future storms, they say, it is very unlikely due to two reasons safety concerns and staffing issues. we are live here at philadelphia school did it trick headquarters i'm greg argos for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". children we should remember, greg, thanks very much. new jersey governor chris christie announced a plan for the the state to take over atlantic city ace finances. the christie says take over bill is needed after atlantic city, fears of casino closures. he said city's government has too much debt and too expense turf run for the tax base. governor asked for the bill to be introduced and passed by the end of february. new jersey man files a lawsuit against amtrak over the deadly derailment in philadelphia. the suit claims joshua pearl stein of livingston essex county suffered injuries that quote harmed the quality of his life. when train 188 jumped the

tracks last may. authorities say that train was traveling more than 100 miles an hour, at the time, eight people were killed more than two hundred were hurt. tomorrow will be one year since shoppers at lulu lemon in center city were injured during a partial roof collapse. one of the victims is filing a lawsuit against the owners of the adjacent property. the lawyers for allison friedman, the most seriously injured victim, said she was crushed by parts of the store caving in and falling debris from the adjoining office building. she's set to have major spinal fusion surgery for tomorrow. as we continue tonight a class pet in new jersey has become a social media sensation. coming up next on "eyewitness news" at 6:00 meet lizard who was brought back to life after he was found near death in a kind gar even student's salad. talk about how this weekend's snowstorm turned one philadelphia man into an instant millionaire. kate? no snow on the radar tonight but we have some rain

a gash beige truck explodes in the neighborhood streets and captured on camera. this video captured by cindy, it happened on fitsrandolph avenue in hamilton township, new jersey. we're told there were in injuries or evacuations. we're told the fire started in the battery compartment in the engine, and spread to the gas tank. two homes were damaged. well, unusual find in a kid school lunch is all of the craze on twitter and facebook. a lizard was discover in the student's salad, that had been in the refrigerator for a few days. this happened at riverside elementary in princeton. lizard had been cold, lifeless after all that time in the fridge but after warming up, he came around and is now the class's new pet.

getting down this street. that is the story. check this out, in the middle of the road we have he's got snow all over the place. it is slush toy day because finally we have got these temperatures above freezing. we got up to 50 degrees. again the next few nice it will get cold and it will refreeze. you see cars plowed in, some people haven't even dug out, just yet and some of the neighbors around here are frustrated about this. good news is we're going to get a slow warm up, but it will take sometime. hopefully we can get some help here and get on this. talk about snow, we might have heard about a rumor about another east coast snowstorm? well, sorry, let me squash that. we will get to the weather graphics. i want to talk about what is happening. we will take you to the upper atmosphere. there is two pieces of energy. one over northern plains in canada and deep south over gulf of mexico. as we go through time those two jet stream pieces of energy remain separate. if you want a large storm you need them to come together.

that is not going to happen. they stay separate on thursday, finally on friday, a little bit late inert day they start coming closer to but by that time the storm is well off shore. at this point in threat for major east coast snowstorm. sorry snow lovers. if you like mild temperatures, check this out. this is a temperature outlook as we head toward february, first week, forecasting a above average temperatures for much of the east coast. well above average for the delaware valley. we have to find cool temperatures out in the western part of the u.s. through go, so signs of mild air coming in, as we head into february. back here again west oak lane it is a mess and like i said just watch out for more freezing conditions at nighttime, so beware area of black ice for next few nights. we are live in west oak lane we will send it back in the studio to kate with the check of the forecast and warmer temperatures, good evening, kate. >> good evening, justin. those road still looking terrible. >> yes, yes. >> and once it all freezes up

and ices up we have to chisel it out with a sledge hammer out there. >> it is pathed down too. >> elbow grease. >> gist turns into solid ice. >> black ice, for sure. >> we will have a black ice threat again for north and western suburbs overnight in the city temperatures stay close to the freezing mark. the south and east above freezing but north and west we are sub freezing again tonight. anything that melt today and a lot did, mild day to day, we will see patches of black ice. not only on the road be careful when you walk outside your sidewalk could be slippery as well. the here's a live shot northampton county road looking shiny there right now. everybody getting bio kay but do you see that sidewalk on the side there definitely could be more slow downs as you walk around and you don't want to slip on the icy spot. be safe. if it looks wetest specially tomorrow morning and in towns like bethlehem, allentown, easton places like that got snow we will see sub freezing temperatures tonight, take it very slow on the roads.

it looks wet right now. that could start to get icy quickly. taking a peak at storm scan 3a front moving through tonight. we have no moisture at least not locally producing a good deal of rain in mississippi, alabama. for us we are seeing a few showers here and there these are pushing south east which is good news because area north and west which have a thick snow pack we will see temperatures drop below freezing faster. by that time it looks like showers will be out of here. we don't worry too much about freezing rain or anything like that but any snow melt or wet road will be freeze. we are above freezing in allentown, 37. mount pocono 44 degrees there they have quite a bit of snow. forty-six in philadelphia a. it is still in the 50's, in wildwood so what to expect overnight? just a stray shower watching for patchy ice north and west. for tomorrow cloud break for some sun, temperatures around 40 degrees, not as warm as day but still seasonal for this time of the user. today was a mild day especially by january standard. we will hit 50.
