4:00 am
from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". good morning, messy snowy start to your friday morning. storm scan3 right here shows system moving up the coast bringing rain and perhaps even couple of inches of snow to our area. >> take a look at the snow falling outside. we have a live look. be sure leave yourself extra time to get where you are going today. and it is coming down in south philadelphia. the salt trucks, they're ready to roll. we'll check in on conditions across the area. good friday morning to you, it is february 5th, i'm area cane von tiehl.ing to >> i'm jim donovan, we're on extra early to help you get through this snowy start to this friday morning. let's get the latest on the forecast from katie. >> morning, everyone, happy friday, jimmy nailed it, give yourselves some extra time this morning, you will need it. so katie, what is in store for
4:01 am
thus morning? >> obviously got the action going on right over my shoulders on storm scan3 already. that's the story pretty much all morning. what's good about the storm, it is acquit hitter. will get out of here no later than noon, probably even earlier than that depending on location, further inland, the further north, the quick they are will get out of here. clearly now that we are into the coldest time of the night, leading up to dawn, you're starting to see that rain change over in a broad fashion here to snow. now, i think that this radar looks a lot scarier than it actually s because frankly a lot of this is only sticking to the grass. however, i don't want you to get too cocky here. you go out the door, you start drying down the road, you will have spray on the vehicles, definitely going to have pounding down either wet snow or rain in spots. and as it comes down it obviously reduces visibility, will naturally slow you down anyway. looking at the area temperatures, it is pretty marginal, folks. 38 degrees currently at the a.c. airport, ocean water temperature 43, mild ocean right now by comparison,
4:02 am
36 degrees, at philadelphia international airport. and again, marginal enough that you are going to see those wet snowflakes. but at the moment, they are having difficult time sticking to the roads, which is at least good news. that said, upper 30's generally speaking with northerly wind flow at this point across the shore towns. so winter weather advisory in effect until ten for the city until noon down toward the shore, that's where you will see this retreat at the latest. with wiggle room here to play with with the winter storm, we went two, 4 inches down toward the shore towns and just inland of that. we have potential for grassy surfaces for coat took 2-inch across the i95 corridor and immediate vicinity. this morning mixture every rain and wet snow. so grassy accumulation expected because of. that will just kind of some i type of morning. by midday all tapering off west to east, this afternoon, actually going to see some sunshine. looking around the region as a whole, it really is sort of tail of two forecasts here, philly, the shore, spec to go start off on kind of ugly note, let's be honest, then eventually the sun will shine.
4:03 am
we'll have a bit of a mess to clean up, also want to keep the umbrella at the ready walking out the door this morning. it will naturally slow you down no matter the type of precipitation out, there definitely coming down pretty steadily, meisha. >> sure is. i guess that's the blessing, snow not accumulating, looking like leaving damp, empty roadways, visibility probably will play issue today just because we are seeing it come down as almost horizontal, vertical, snow, sleet, you can see it coming on the windshield, on the roadways, this will no doubt slow you down even though we know's typically aren't as busy as monday, tuesday, wednesday. this looks almost to be frozen right now, where we were seeing snow, sleet, the schuylkill westbound at city avenue, one of the areas where you can really see coming down past that camera. so, if you have to take the schuylkill, anywhere around city avenue give yourself extra time. this is where we had disabled vehicle, mid-county plaza northbound, toward the northbound extension, e-zpass
4:04 am
lane, now since cleared. what we are seeing is overview, kind of good birds eye view of how wet the roadways, are see it kicking up from the tires, going out of the windshield behind the cars. give yourselves extra space from the car in front of you. also, 95 headlight moving in the southbound direction, another cam that looks to be frozen, but you can see, past the lights, on the street, all of the wetness. when i look at these camera shots every morning, i know that a day like today, morning like today, will most definitely slow you down. as we all know, wing bowl 24 starts today at six: so parking lots around the wells fargo center open 4:00 a.m. then the start time of the event of course 6:00 a.m. doors open 5:00 a.m., erika, jim, back to you. >> we have team coverage for you of this morning's snow. >> "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch live at the penndot at yard in south philadelphia where crews are busy this morning, justin? >> jim, erika, good morning, yes, we've been here for about an hour or so watching the crews get ready for the storm. as we've seen it change from rain to what's now wintery mix
4:05 am
falling out here at the south philly salt yard. i want to show you a traffic light here, so you can see how those flakes are coming down. that's a little more than rain you are seeing some weight to the precipitation, as it falls on to the highway above us here. but you look down to the ground, as you can see here, it is not doing whole lot. it is turning to water, the roads here are going to be little warmer than snow conditions would prefer to stick to this pavement here. how much, in just the past several minutes, we've seen trucks leave the salt yard here with salt. let's take to you video from earlier, so you can see, yes, they actually were here loading up with salt, making their way out into the roads and highways here, in philadelphia and in this area to get ready for this morning commute. we did see them dropping salt even as they left this area to get the roads ready for you, as you make your way to work and school this morning, as we have been out here, precipitation has been very mixed, rain at some points, wintery mix at other, has not
4:06 am
been much after issue at this point, because there is not much traffic on the roads, that we know as this morning continues to wear, that the cashing and buses will make their way out on to the roads. you will want to be careful as you do that, this morning, again, looking at the salt yards here as you can see, the salt is here and ready to go, of course, this won't be anything like that storm we had last month, where 2 feet of snow fell in part of our area. creating a big mess for penndot and other road crews to get cleaned up. we can tell you from what we have seen here, we've seen tractors come, trucks come, workers come, they are definitely cycling through to be ready for this system. however, at this point, it does appear as of right now they're on top of it. it is not creating too much of a problem for the roads as of right now. erika, jim, back over to you. >> you mention that storm last month, small potatoes compared to that. >> i feel badly every time i'm on this morning show justin is out in the element.
4:07 am
i'm sorry, justin, it is all because of me. >> meanwhile, later this morning, some brave souls will have chicken wings for breakfast, lot of chicken wings. >> today is wing bowl. big crowd at chickie's and pete's' in south philly as competitive eaters weighed in. total of 30 eat letters chow down for big prizes at wing bowl, sponsored by sister station sports radio 94wip. pat gal end is down there, live report for you with all of the fun coming up at 4:30, watching them tackle the wings down -- >> chicken wings for breakfast. >> you know what, once a year, get a little craze. >> i if you say so. >> right now it is 4:07. other big news to tell but morning including in new york, two officers have been shot. the update on their concern. >> south philadelphia neighborhood, homelands security shows up. we'll have the latest on their investigation. >> we are keeping our eye on the storm. we could see snow from a coating to several inches it, just depends on where you live. we'll check in with kate when we come right back. good morning.
4:10 am
this is the schuylkill at city avenue. see the flakes flying by the kreen. checking in with katie, to see your commute to work and school. >> the talk of one philadelphia neighborhood. undercover agent spent hours yesterday removing boxes of evidence from a home on the 1300 block of ellsworth street. eyewitnesses say they saw two people being questioned and removed from the hoist. neighbors say they lived in the house for about ten years. >> the two people who lived there, the man and the woman, they were very cordial, they were quiet, they were polite. i did not really talk with them. they kept to themselves. they kept to themselves. >> authorities would not comment on the raid except to
4:11 am
say it is part of a ongoing investigation. a police chase ends in a crash injuring a person in delaware. chopper three was over the scene last night on the 1700 block of tally road in wilmington. police say the chase began in philadelphia. it is not clear what prompted that chase or if any charges have been filed. >> now, to a story you saw first on three. two women face charges in connection with a prostitution bus on the main line. officers led the suspect away in handicuffs during a raid at the body of zen massage business in radnor township. police say they started their investigation after seeing suggestive ads on line. now, they are looking into whether the women are part of a human trafficking operation. >> meanwhile, a very dangerous night for two nypd officers on routine foot patrol in the bronx, shot after encounter in a complex stairwell. happened about 8:00 last night. officers asked the suspect for id, and shots rang out. a male officer suffered a
4:12 am
graze wound, to the face, and is in stable condition. a female officers shot in her torso, is in serious condition. >> another example of what our officers couldn't front every single day keeping us safe, now on the streets in new york city, but in the stairwells, the hallways of our housing development. >> fortunately, both officers are expected to recover. the suspect fled into an apartment and found dead of apparent self-inflict the gunshot wound. >> tributes are pouring in this morning for maurice white, the founder of earth, winds and fire passed away yesterday after battling a long illness. >> ♪ >> so many iconic songs, the 74 year old spot fought decade long battle against parkinson ace disease, had string every hit, september, also shining star, boogie wonder land, and after the love is gone. the band will be honored at the grammy awards later this

month. >> and, some news that is really shocking to a different generation, bmx wyche err and extreme sports pioneer dave mere a has died in apparent suicide. the 41 year old gained know or eye tis, rise to go prominence. went onto host real road world rules challenge, also lent his name to series every best selling video games. he is survived by his wife and two children. well, the pacific ocean is putting on real show out west, the high surf produced some spectacular waves, look at this, on the oregon coast. some as high as 27 feet, people were out getting sprayed and snapped photos, but officials did remind people never to go out on the beaches or jetties during high surf and always watch the waves from a safe distance. what a show. >> across the country we are perfectly watching that fine here. >> should be fine to watch the video here. >> whether i came in it was raining this morning. >> it has definitely switched over, but the big fat wet
4:14 am
flakes, having hard time sticking to at least the roads at this point. i had little grassy accumulation, very modest out in the suburbs, but you will run in into that this morning t slows you down, visibilities dropping, so yes, sort of its own animal when it kinds to the casino of impact it is brink to go us this morning, so we walk you through all of it, give you sense how much we end up with here. storm scan, high, meisha. hey, girl, shaking her head like darn it. it is all good, girl, don't worry, we got you. let me step on it. storm scan3, you poor thing, it is fine. storm scan3, continues to show that change over from rain over to snow here across the delaware valley. pretty much in its entirety, southeast atlantic, sussex county, still finding it come down as raindropsment like i said, finding a lot of this even snow, come down looking like it is rain. because it is those big wet flakes that don't actually stick and ac late yet. however, we take a look at storm scan at wider zoom. a loft moisture getting thrown back on shore at this point.
4:15 am
and because this is moisture rich system that just crept up on us, we likely see at least few inches out of this specially near the shore towns, we end one heavier banding toward the shore, you will have better opportunity for that. so walking through future weather, we get through the next couple of hours, whole time we're on the air on "eyewitness news", even into cbs this morning, likely still tracking some snow here across southeast most pa, new jersey, delaware, then this back edge starts to creep in. so it tape presser west to east. by the time we hit the noon hour, we should be pretty much done with it. you will actually see some sunshine before it is all said and done too. future snow ability, we peak here, wacking through at least one model's interpretation of this, perhaps we over achieve in atlantic sit which 5 inches here. but generally the rule of thumb is this: coating to inch or two, around philadelphia, the vicinity, then points off to the northwest where the cut offends. then get heavier banding across the shore points, at least closer to the shore, so may ends 12-4 inches swat around that way. meanwhile, visibility are not ideal.
4:16 am
we take a look at different map here. down to mile in trenton, mile in wilmington, i95, not all that ideal right now. and you are actually even lower than that, more like half mile in wildwood. so keep that in mind. when we go out to the palmyra cove nature park shot, look closely, snow coming down, but looks like you got to look very closely, heavy rain coming down diagonal here with the northeast wind flow. pretty light winds, all that said, but you have got enough cold air where it is just that fine line between raindrop or snowflake. again, the heavier wet snowflakes is what we are finding. 38 degrees in ac. very marginal in philadelphia at 36 at the airport anyway. northerly component to the winds flow here will keep us in the chill, and as we get closer to dawn, those temperatures will steadily drop off by few additional degrees, so we will keep the snow around. that said, it is mainly a grassy accumulation, unpaved surfaces what we will say, probably have to flick the windshield wipers to get the snow off your windshield when headed out on the road if you don't have the benefit after garage anyway.
4:17 am
next couple it days looking fantastic, flirt with 50 degrees sunday for the superbowl, as we head into monday, increasing clouds, looking for couple of snow showers late their night. also chance for it into tuesday. meisha, over to you. >> katie, new word to what i am doing to you, not a photo bomb, it is katie bomb. >> oh, i like that. >> new hashtag. >> good morning, everyone, happy true. we are so happy it is friday. the problem outside right now, though, is as you can see from this camera shot, this is spring house, 309 at norristown road. look at this. this is what you are going to be dealing with this morning, and it sounds like all our morning commute will be like. >> this you are dealing with the sleet and the snow. it is hitting the roadways. the good news is, it doesn't sound like it is turning into black ice anywhere, it is just a little too warm for that, but you will have visibility issues, 309, norristown road, anywhere around the spring house area, what you are dealing with, leave homes early today, will need to do so, schuylkill eastbound at city avenue looking good, just beyond those trees. you can see the schuylkill westbound at city avenue, coming off the roosevelt boulevard. a lot of headlights out there.
4:18 am
very, very smart indeed to leave your homes early this morning, seeing a lot of people do that, if being parks seeing volume levels build quicker thon friday than we tip he cannily do, because fridays are usually very kind of quiet day until around 6:00 a.m. so, that is actually good news, ben franklin bridge, moving in the westbound direction, from jersey, actually looking nice and quiet. it is very slick, it is very wet out there, leave your homes little early. do have speed restrictions in play, ben franklin bridge, betsy ross bridge, and the walt whitman bridge, they're all 35 miles per hour right now for slick conditions, and wet roadways, make note of. that will again i'll say it all morning long, visibility, as well. we saw how hard the snow is coming down. downed tree west bradford township glennside road all lanes blocked here. you will have to use an alternate, what i would suggest right now, is the de long drive. back to you. >> thank you. still ahead this morning, new life for old ship. we now finally know it will happen with the ss united state. >> plus, it is a weekend of campaigning in new hampshire.
