4:30 am
turn over to snow. the thing is radar definitely looks a lot more clear cut than what you will find when you walk out the door. it is these big wet heavy snowflakes that could be mistaken frankly for rain as you are traveling around, at least for now, and actually the fact that this is having difficult time for the moment anyway. sticking to anything but grassy surfaces, you mainly just got wet roads to contends w that said, i don't want you to go out there thinking this will be, you know, a really easy drive. we have winter weather advisory lasts until 10:00 a.m. for the city and immediate vicinity, up until noon down toward the shore towns, for the amounts that we're showing you here. expecting anywhere from two to 4 inches to fall across that sort of light blue shaded area, more like coating to 2 inches, again, primarily this is on grassy surfaces, and we will just call it unpaved surfaces, may end one quick coating walking out the door here on your car windshield. might need couple of extra minute not only to be thawing out but clear things off your vehicle. right now the temperatures as they stands are in the mid
4:31 am
30's, generally around the board, 31 mount pocono, the colds he is spot at least on this particular slew of observations, but the temperatures are very marginal. soap, while the grounds may at least be a little bit warmer, where you're not going to see the snow, initially, stick to the roads, you've got the coal enough air in place to see the change over. so it is one of those mixed bag type of scenarios there is morning, heavy wet snow falling down. and it will have a chance to accumulate. but again, not necessarily on the road. although if at some part it my have a chance it leave a coating specially through the side street. through the afternoon windy, but actually dry out quickly here. you will see some sun before it drops over the horizon, but later tonight temperatures are set to drop off once more, so i expect you will see some icing take place once more. meanwhile, we expect temperatures to hit the low mid 40's recalling around the region as a whole, i call this earlier, tail of two forecasts, where you start off with a mess in the morning, and frankly, a much nicer second half of the day.
4:32 am
so, this time around, meisha, a looks like the p.m. commute actually winning for the best commute. >> yes, i was just going to say, that lucky for them, not so lucky for our morning commuters. good morning, at least it is friday. but what we are seeing is some very slippery conditions. not so much black ice. just because of all of that sleet and that snow, that is coming down, and i mean it is coming down pretty hard. here is a look at the airport area. ninety-five south, at the airport, you can see the wet roadways here. plenty of headlights already for there is doesn't really look like it, but when you take into consideration how earl at this still is in the morning, we tip beingly don't see this. also the droplet on camera lens letting you know how wet it is, snow coming down but not sticking as snow, melting right away, leaving us with very wet surfaces which can be slippery. do not under estimate that. slick conditions for sure wet outside, but the fact the snow is coming down so hard, what happens then, visibility issue. so you kind of expect what's going on this morning. again look at this, schuylkill eastbound at city avenue, one of the areas that will heat up quickly, already is, for being
4:33 am
still in the 4:00 hour, plenty of headlight and tail light out there already and you can see this snow is just whipping by this camera lens. again, visibility, visibility, visibility. it is an issue. take a look at the vine, westbound, eastbound, visibility playing issue, still very wet right there. it is looking so quite he on the vine, good news, those it every you at home listening to there is try to get out there as early as you can. speed restrictions in place on these four bridges, ben franklin, betsy ross, walt whitman, commodore barry bridge, down to 35 miles per hour there. and also, too much salt on the roadway. we don't tip he cannily hear that when it comes to snow. doylestown pike eastbound at county line road, large pile of salt here blocking some of the roadwayment make note of that, as well. it will be a busy morning, jim, over to you. >> thanks, meisha, a very much. let's get you out to the street level for real time look at conditions as you head out the door. >> "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo cruising around in that cbs-3 mobile weather lab, i think you're in pennsauken now jan. what are you seeing?
4:34 am
>> we made our way from center city philadelphia over the ben franklin bridge route 30 east pennsauken, you see that shine, that's a lot of moisture, it is snowing pretty steadily right now but not sticking on the roads. so, seeing a lot of moisture, some puddles out here. but by and far not a bad commute right now. as katie and meisha have been saying, snow may not stick on the roads in your area. but do you want to take it very easy out there this morning. >> we are expecting little bit more snow. but it is pretty easy going out here this morning, just be cautious, because, you know, that in some places could look a little worse than this turning to water easily this morning, but we could see some changing conditions, so you want to keep an eye on the forecast, and of course on our
4:35 am
road conditions. we'll continue to bring them to you throughout the morning. but for now live in pennsauken, in the cbs-3 mobile weather lab, jim, erika, back in to you. >> certainly busy morning for the penndot crews, out salting and clearing the roadways. >> justin finch continues our team coverage. live at penndot salt yard this south philadelphia. good morning, justin. >> reporter: jim, erika, good morning, within the hour, weaver seen several penndot trucks leave here from the salt yards here in south philly. we have video of those guys leaving from just a few minute ago, they were all lined up here, salt in tow, about to go out here and salt the area roads, i can tell you that they did look as though we have places to go already, dispatched to certain areas, to get to work right away for the morning commute. we can tell you that here, i kind of want to jump back out live to show you what we are seeing here. on the ground, the actual gown here, snow snot sticking as you can see, just water at this point. they did drop some salt in
4:36 am
this area earlier perhaps, this is a result of that, you still want to be very cautious when you were driving this morning, just in case the conditions are changeable, where you are, of course, we know strong start and conditions like this will lead to good finish tonight as weather continues to transition. dow want to show you the traffic light on the 95 over paths you can see the flakes being whipped in the wind there, traffic on the highway there, seems to be moving at regular speed at this time. we know the conditions can change out here, and that it is cause for you to be safe and cautious, as you make your way out on to the roads to school and work this morning that's the latest from south philly. jim, erika, back over to you. >> thank you very much, justin. we want to see how you're handling the snow this morning being sends us your pictures, on facebook, twitter and instagram. be sure to use the #cbs3 snow.

4:37 am
we may use them here on "eyewitness news", meanwhile, truely unique philadelphia interested significance about to go down at the wells fargo center. >> wing bowl 24. >> "eyewitness news" sports reporter pat gratten joins us now at the wells fargo center, pat, your first wing bowl. what do you think so far? >> crazy necessary hasn't started just yet, guys. i haven't gotten the full force of wing bowl. it is wing bowl 24, the 24th installment of just a crazy morning, basically, culminate with eating wings, but it is much more than that, as you can see around me, we've got a ban set up, we have the stage behind me, there is a band over here, people are starting to slowly file in. and whether it does start obviously there will be plenty, plenty going on. we will run through the time frein just a minute, but last night, that is when all of the wings were being put together. pj wheelihan's is the official
4:38 am
wing sponsor and wing maker. they were busy cooking up 10,000 wings. jim, the coo of pj wheelihan's, and he talks about getting everything ready for wing bowl 24. >> a loft it is practice, as we've done this nine times now. and we hopefully get better at it each time. but the key is, you know, it is all about timing, it is all about getting these wings cook off, getting them loaded in a hot pocket cents, get the hot boxes load intoed our truck and get our truck over to the wells fargo center. >> right around 6:00 they'll all file in between 6:00 and about 7:45. the eating self will take part right around 7:45 to 8:00ment and there is a special guest, former nba superstar dennis rodman will be here as one of the main guests every wing bowl 24. so we'll get a chance to talk to him little later on as well as some of the contestant, it will be mayhem, it will be crazy, and already starting.
4:39 am
live from the wells fargo center for wing bowl 24, i'm pat gallen, erika, jim, save me, help! >> hey, before you go, pat, i know it is loudoun there, but we understand that the parking lot opened up at four # a.m. what did you see out there in the parking lot? >> it wasn't that crazy in the parking lot. i think the weather held some people back. >> we did see some yellow buses filing in, people getting little rowdy but wasn't too bad. i think if the wet her been little nicer it, may have been a little crazier. but, i think in about an hour or so this place will be hopping. >> pacing themselves. super bowl ooh is this sunday. thinking about calling out sick, think you will be sneaky? may want to rethink that plan. what bosses are saying about the day after the big game. >> also ahead, local youth football team.
4:40 am
>> taking up a collection for a good cause. >> tracking snowfall, over achieving, quick hitter. we'll break down the detail when it get out of here, what are we looking at, what's it do to your commute. all of those details and much
4:41 am
4:42 am
>> welcome back everyone, another look from the mobile weather lab at the roads in south jersey. leave yourself some extra time this friday morning. the roads are definitely slick. >> and, check this out. another milestone from one of america's favorite panda bears. if you can, take a glance at your tv screen. baebae takes his tip trip outside with his mama. no surprise there is went viral almost instantly. the caption, look who is stepping out hashtag baebae. that little panda, too darn cute. >> i hear katie over there. >> oh, so cute. >> i mean, panda, making baby panda, just stop right there. >> oh, so sweet.
4:43 am
how is the forecast looking for today? i know talking snow? >> how come we always have to leave out every panda stuff to weather i never like following these kind of stories. okay, so, we expecting to end up here guys with a little bit more afro bus expectation in terms of snowfall here. on storm scan3, we take a look at what's happening locally right now, you can see pretty much everything that is had a chance to change from rain over to snow indicating of course that temperatures have fallen enough, that you are seeing that change-overtake place. the good thing is that it is having difficult time sticking to the roadway. now, you will likely have on your car windshield, certainly on the grass, and even unpaved it, will have chance to stick to it, however, at this point, it is not terrible on the roads. dow not, how much, want you to think that that means you can get cocky about this and go flying down the highway, you will get slowed down from other impact like poor visibility. meisha will go through all of that, but regardless with the system, more than meets the eye, essentially here, and we will continue to watch this basically this move out from west to east with time.
4:44 am
so our morning drive, completely impacted by this, we will be tracking this while on the air with you all morning here on "eyewitness news". and then, by noontime, it is pretty much done. what do you need to know region by region? take a look at the spot, here is what you got. snow showers the worse of it, up in the poconos. so just a light little dusting up toward the ski resorts, but lehigh valley pick up coating to 2 inches as will the city and subs. call it heavy in terms of the fact that it is the big fat snowflakes. it is not going to fall heavily, and pile up, that's not what we mean by. that will south delaware, southern new jersey, same story, two-4 inches for you, because you will be stuck with the system for few additional hours, and coastal delaware and new jersey, it has started as rain, it is basically turn over to wet snow at this point, for most of you. what we spec from now, but another disturbance headed our way early next week. put our european model. actually large storm will develop off shore thankfully
4:45 am
stay off shore, as we head into the weekend, but then, this little guy starts to nudge in on monday. so couple of rain or snow showers from that specially monday night, and tuesday, will likely also touch off few light snow showers. so that's something that we will be watching for, meantime, if you are lucky enough, maybe i'll stow-away in your suitcase here, if you are lucky enough to have scored superbowl tickets, headed out to california, it is looking beautiful for the game at lee sly stadium, 68 degrees under sunshine. that's classic california, right? looks beautiful. here back at home, no 60s in the forecast, but we keep it above average for the upcoming weekend. see some sunshine out, there then as we mentioned moment ago, monday into tuesday, fresh round of some light snow on the horizon. meisha? >> katie, can leave me behind. you go to the superbowl, you are jumping in the carry on, i'm jumping in the suitcase. we're going together. yes, superbowl sunday is coming up. but first we have to tackle this friday morning commute. good morning, happy friday to you, it is messy outside.
4:46 am
all of the snow coming by the cameras, what you will be driving through this morning, sounds like linger through the entire morning commute. those of you at home listening to the message give yourself couple of extra minute, because you will be driving slower than normal. the good news, this is not turning into black ice. no where we see, not seeing so much slippery conditions, in terms of black ice, but we will be seeing slippery conditions in terms of wet roadways. this is a look at the schuylkill westbound city avenue, another great shot, letting you know not so much accumulating like we have been talking about just coming down fast, furious it, will slow un down it, absolutely will. new jersey 42 freeway northbound creek road looking good actually just looking wet in the area. we do have down tree, west bradford township, all lanes block, going to have to use the alternate, de long road what i would suggest right now. this is where we had debris in the rodeway inn fact, you don't normally say that in terms of snow, too much salt on the roadway, all since been cleared, do have speed restrictions on the bridges, more coming up. first we take quick break, stay right where you are.
4:47 am
cbs-3 "eyewitness news" will be right
4:48 am
4:49 am
>> we have our eye on the storm bringing snow to much of our area. live look now at the schuylkill at city avenue, be careful out there. >> high ranking officials new about the air break every legionnaire's disease and its possible connection to the city's polluted water system long before the public was informed, when rick snyder disclosed spike? january, snyder said he learned about it just couple of days earlier, but emails obtained by the liberal group progress michigan show snyder's office was aware of the outbreak in flint michigan since last march. spokesman says snyder did not know about the outbreak despite an aid knowing ten months earlier. >> local youth football organization is launched campaign to help flint resident get clean drinking water. members of the whitman park tiger youth football organization, they are work to
4:50 am
go collect 100 thought bottles of water, they're also excepting monetary donations, to buy additional bottled water. the group's chairman says we all have a moral connection to this situation in flint. >> we were fortunate to have clean water, and we didn't want to sit back as an organization and turn our blind eye to the situation that's going on out there in flint. >> if you would like you can drop off your donation nightly at the rear entrance of the teamsters union hall, that's behind the collingswood diner, that group will then drive out to flint with those donations on march 4th. what a great idea to have youth football organization also doing community service. >> exactly, good for them, good for the folks in flint. >> it is 4:51, time for check on business news. >> money watch's jill wagner joins us from the new york stock exchange, mcdonald ace all day breakfast, we're fans, helping turn around the business, but hurting another business, though, right? >> that's right. all day breakfast at mcdonald's could be eating into dunkin' donuts bottom line. the chain reported a surprising drop in sales in the past quarter, a mid more
4:51 am
competition, now, dunkin says it also lost customers when franchises raised prices cents to off-set rising minimum wages. erika, jim? >> well, jim -- jill, sunday of course the big game. everyone is watching. anyone thinking every calling in sick monday, do you think their boss could be onto them? >> ya, looking like that's the case. an office team survey found that three in ten managers think that their workers often call in sick or make an excuse to skip work after a big sporting event like the superbowl, and four in ten workers say they've either done that or they know someone who has. so, erika, jim, i expect to see you guys back here on monday. >> i just oh, i know someone. it wasn't me, but a co-worker called in glike who could it have been? >> not i. jill, thanks so much. see you monday, take care. meanwhile, coming up after the break, another check on weather and traffic. >> we'll be right back.
4:52 am
4:53 am
4:54 am
>> we are of course tracking a system as you can see over my shoulders, a lot of juice with this, as i like to say, so lots of moisture to work with, as a result, you will see what really looks at this point like pretty robust storm system, right? when you go out the door it, will look more like it is rain falling, even though we've generally seen the rain turn over to snow, it is that heavy wet snow, in other words, it looks more like it is rain since it is falling with such weight to it. that said, i don't want you to worry about heavy in the sense it will accumulate at times, more than anything, talking coating to up 2 inches max around i95 in the vicinity, and maybe up to 4 inches total as go closer to the shore towns. but the other issue that comes into play is down the road. by tonight, even though this system will be long gone, we should drop down to easily just below the freezing mark in most spots, and because of that, anything that is damp or wet will easily refreeze. icy spots as you know this time of the morning and overnight it, can be difficult to see, so i would say that by
4:55 am
tonight, when the sun goes down, if it looks wet, expect that it has since iced over. good rule of thumb. later on this morning, heck, i would say as early as noontime at the absolute latest, in fact, you will start to see the sun coming through here. so we start off with snow, we ends with sun. and then that sun will stick around right through superbowl weekend. another round of snow potential already by monday night leading into tuesday. but it looks like it would be pretty light accumulation out of whatever is on the horizon there. and meantime back to the here and now, snow is going to trip you up here for this morning drive. we are going to be tracking it actively on storm scan, meisha, right through our entire show. so it is with us for few more hours. >> it is certainly going to affect our morning commute. there is no doubt about that, so plan accordingly, leave your homes early. good morning, everyone, happy friday. don't like to be the bearer of bad news, i know katie and i are working hard on trying to get through this. 945 south at girard, see the droplet on many camera letting you know it is wet, other camera shots, especially around the schuylkill at city avenue, you can just see in fact you just saw that just
4:56 am
that breeze, that snow coming by the camera. what that will do it, will give you visibility issues and wet roadways. that's going to make for a mess as we progress through the morning. this is 95 south at girard, plenty of heed lights, for not even have cracked into the 5:00 hour yet. looking at the blue route little bit ago. northbound past route one, looking okay there. this is the ben franklin bridge westbound toward philly. it zoomed in on that speed censor, letting you know 35 miles per hour on the bridges, there, a look at the blue route, looking okay, there droplet on the camera. 35 miles per hour, restrictions on these bridges, betsy was, walt whitman bridge, and the commodore barry. >> coming up necessary next hour, continuing to keep our eye on the storm, as snowfalls across the area this morning, to could reek havoc for your morning commute. >> we'll check in with our reporters across the region, katie has the updated forecast. we're back at the top of the hour. stay with us.
4:57 am
4:58 am
4:59 am
>> good morning, you made it to friday. the bad news you have a snowy commute ahead of you. the mobile weather lab is on the move, checking conditions on the road as you get ready to head out the door this morning. >> and taking a look at storm scan3, you can see the rain has turned over to snow, across most of our region, katie lets us know how long the snow sticks around. and those salt trucks, they're ready to roll, too. they probably won't have to do much around philadelphia in terms of plowing, but the timing of the storm that's really the main issue. going on early this morning it, will affect your morning commute. good morning, it is friday, february 5th, i'm erika von tiehl. >> i'm jim donovan. could be messy ride on the roads this morning, we have team coverage as the day gets off to snowy start.
5:00 am
lets get right to kate toy see how much snow we can expected to. >> jim, system decided it will be a sneaky bug err, actually over achieving in terms of what we had originally expected out of it, throwing a loft moisture in. and it looks like it will hang out for about the same timing that we had originally expected, but so much moisture, and now, a bit further after westward edge to this. means that we have our expectations somewhat. not terrible. but it is enough that, again, the time something everything here. coming at a bad time. it will mess with us. storm scan looks i would say frankly a lot worse than it actually s it looks like heavy pounding snow it is the wet snow variety, sort every just melts on contact on the roads, and generally speaking here you won't have too much accumulation on the roads unless it is untreated but it does mess with your visibility out there. and, it will eventually just because it is coming down so heavily see modest accumulation, but winter weather advisory posted for at least these counties in southeastern pennsylvania, most new jer a
