all of us have tricks forget over an illness, and there's that old saying, starve a fever feed a cold. does it really work or an old wife's tale. good question. nicole brewer heads to the experts to get answer. and item temperatures already beginning to tumble as the coldest air of the season moves in coming up i'll tell when you wind chills will be subzero as we head toward the weekend. >> home sweet home. cruise ship passengers recall their nightmare at sea after a violent storm cut their trip short. those stories and more strata towed night but we begin with sickness bread spreadin spreadis a local college campus. good evening, i'm jessica dean. >> i'm ukee washington. outbreak affected at least 100 students. "eyewitness news" reporter nat that brown is on the ursinus college campus tonight with the very latest information. natasha? >> reporter: well, ukee, we can tell you that the college voluntarily closed its cap tear ya today and many students tell us that evening activities here on campus were canceled as well.

all of this while school officials and officials with the montgomery county health dealt try to figure out what made so many students so sick. >> keep to myself. >> reporter: that's the sentiment echoed by many students on the campus of ursinus college. after a fast-moving outbreak of gas tow intestinal illness on campus. >> it was mostly vomiting and some people had diarrhea and some people were like coughing and -- >> one friend did have to go to the hospital. and she just got treated today. but my other friends they were okay. just had to get some rest. >> reporter: first student was taken to the emergency room at 2:00 a.m. since then at least a hundred students have been sicken. 22 treated at local hospitals and urgent care facilities. >> started coming in more and more. 2:00 o'clock, 3:00 o'clock, 4:00 o'clock. so by the time i got to the health center, the waiting room was full of students that had been afflicted with this what appears to be stomach virus.

>> bite end of the day we're hoping that at least both of our dining facilities will be cleaned. we've also spend special attention in residential areas and traffic areas on campus for cleaning purposes as well. >> the stomach illness is carrying the same symptoms. vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. for now the campus seems unusu unusually empty while students and staff try to contain and find the root of the mysterious outbreak g people are definitely more in their rooms, and not in common areas. so they're definitely keeping to themselves more. washing their hands staying away from everything. >> it was pretty scary. just 'cause it's so easily spread between people. >> reporter: well the college is open for classes tomorrow but the dining halls will be closed. we have learned tonight that ursinus college will be partnering with wawa and wegmans to serve lunch and dinner tomorrow as well as breakfast and many of the local restaurants are helping to provide lunch and dinner as well. that's the very latest here in

collegeville, pennsylvania, natasha brown cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> natasha, thank you. we now know one of the two confirmed cases of zika virus in pennsylvania is student at lehigh university. in a memo from the university we learned that student got the virus after traveling abroad that student has recovered. health officials in delaware say the one case there is mild and the woman got it when traveling to an area where the virus is spread. zika virus spread primarily by mosquitoes and if contracted by pregnant women it can cause birth defects. >> passengers of a storm battered cruise ship are back home in new jersey tonight and sharing their frightening stories of survival. royal crib bow yann anthem of seas pulled in to port in bayonne and one of of the 6,000 people on board right there kissed the ground. the captain was forced to turn the ship around after it was damaged in 30-foot waves and hurricane force winds on sunday one day after it left for a week long trip to the bahamas. passenger from collegeville says riding out the storm was a terrifying experience.

>> the worst part was the fear and the lice because we were told over and over that we were in good shape and just relax. >> we were trapped in a room for 17 hours. like on roller coaster you can't get off of and you were trapped. >> i thought i wouldn't make it. i thought we might have to use the live boats. >> royal caribbean said in statement the wind speeds the ship endured were higher than what was forecasted. at least four passengers suffered minor injuries. calling it quits new jersey governor chris christie has dropped out of the republican race for president after a lack luster finish in the new hampshire primary. cbs news reports governor christie made the difficult decision after concluding he simply did not the financial support to continue his campai campaign. christie finished sixth in the voting last night. the governor launched his campaign back in june. and in a statement governor christie said "and so today i leave the race without an ounce of regret. i'm so proud of the campaign we ran, the people that ran it with me and all of those who gave us

their support and confidence along the way ". former hewlett pack carter ceo carly fiorina dropped out of the race today. fear or recent in a finish seven in this new hampshire and that leaves six republicans in the race. also fresh off his big win in new hampshire primary democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders will be stopping by the late show with stephen colbert tonight. that is coming up at 11:35 right after "eyewitness news". and the remaining republican candidates will square off again on the debate stage saturday night in south carolina. and you'll see it at 9:00 o'clock right here on cbs3. pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane survives an tempt by the state senate to remove her from office. the measure failed to meet a two-thirds majority and kane called it a victory for the integrity of the justice system. however another removal threat looms state house passed resolution that would create the next step in a possible impeachment process.

kane is awaiting trial on char charges she leaked grand jury information then lied about it under oath. her law license has been suspended. concern about what's in the water takes center stage tonight in moorestown, burlington coun county. the township meeting at a town hall was pack. among those in attendance members of the the moorestown water group. the residents are united in their objection to try color roane propane or tcp in the drinking water it's chemical compound commonly use the as industrial solvent. township officials say they are taking steps to improve the water and some residents are worried. >> as attacks pair i would like the opportunity to have a vote in whether it's worth it to me to pay maybe a little more money in the short term to invest in health in the public perception again, you know, of course we're all worried about our property values. >> tcp in moorestown water came to light in 2013 when would water wells at the church street water treatment plant were closed. one reopen last summer after no

washington, jessica dean, kate bilo and don bell. ♪ tonight local man is fighting for his life after crippling disease took control. his union health insurance he counted on recently changed and he's thanking complete strangers for opening their pockets to help give him another day. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt has that story. that's a live support machine that ventilator right there. you take that off i stop breathing plain and simple. >> reporter: live these days isn't easy for 66-year-old joe. the father of four and grandfather of 11 spends his days confined to a chair in the corner of his living room hoping to live another day. >> i'm pretty much stable from the neck up. from the neck down it is what it is. >> reporter: he was once an active man. a phillies fan since birth he went to spring training in florida one year with the team. his live changed in 2012.

and fast. >> i go to pick up like a pencil and i would drop it. >> reporter: he rushed to meet with doctors. >> the only thing knew i about als lou gehrig had it and died from it. >> reporter: als cripples the body there's no known cause or cure for the disease. it affects around 6,000 people a year. the news was devastating for a man who loves to build things including the room where he now calls home. >> plumbing was my job, but carpentry is my love. like a project for me. >> reporter: he joined his union back if 1979 and had full health care when he retire. when he was diagnosed with als, he had around a clock the nursing care. he and his wife donna received another below last summer when they found out his union was changing the policy for retirees and his specific skilled nursing needs were no longer covered. >> it's crushing. it's absolutely crushing. >> donna has no nursing degree but works 10 hours a day then comes home to care for her hub. >> without any nursing care, all

this goes away. because now it's a safety issue. >> reporter: they took the matter to federal court hoping to keep his plan in place. but they lost. the judge ruled that his union did nothing illegal by simply switching health plans. now the family is counting on gofundme page not just to help joe but to keep him alive. >> half the people we don't know who they are. they're just strangers donating toward this this is very humbling. >> joe needs skilled nursing care 24 hours a day. and it adds up to about $5,000 week. the 40 plus thousand dollars from the gofundme page will keep joe alive until the end of march. >> it's just not fair to have to deal with the disease and then to have this on top of it and we have been dealing with this since last july. >> reporter: right now joe is under a medicare supplement plan that doesn't take care of his specific nursing needs. i reached out but didn't hear back from the union or the attorney repping his union. joe says he is just trying to stay positive through all of this.

now we know who is responsible for the cold spell. you know what, elsa may be responsible for what we'll be feeling this weekend. it is going to be brutally cold, as much as we like to joke about things i'll tell what as we head into the weekend this is dangerous cold especially saturday night into sunday morning. check on anyone you may know that needs help staying warm. bring those pets inside they feel the cold just like we do. take a look outside right now in the poconos really capitalizing off the cold there making snow up at jack frost big boulder tonight. head out skiing this weekend double up on the layers you don't want really anything but the eyes showing. and that's going to be the case in the city as well this weekend take a look at storm scan3. you can see that westerly wind moving over the great lakes. lake effect snow showers up across new york state, western pennsylvania, into the lower peninsula of michigan for our area maybe a few flurries here and there we're seeing a few indications of flakes flying that is about it. not big deal tonight. the bigger deal the temperatures and they're dropping very rapi rapidly. 29 degrees right now in philadelphia. 25 in reading. it's 18 if you're in mount

pocono at the moment and it feels already like single digits in mount pocono feels like 16 in philly. feels like 13 in wilmington and we got to get used to these numbers. in fact, by sunday morning, put a minus sign in front of these numbers and that's what it's going to feel like. possibly 15 below zero the wind chill on sunday morning. even in philadelphia. so temperatures begin to tumble as we get into the day tomorrow. a very windy day. highs in the 20s feeling like the teens. friday a snow shower around and then saturday into sunday, this big blob of arctic air we go right up to the polar region unleashed on the northeast united states right here. there's some indications that especially up into he know we could be talking about subsere rotem hers sunday morning and even in our area some spots may head down towards zero. but when you factor the wind it feels worse. poconos feeling like 20 to 25 below sunday morning. lehigh valley 15 to 20 below. in the city and suburbs even 10 to 15 below zero. that is a very dangerous wind chill late saturday night into
