>> reporter: and investigators say that william sykes had spent a lot of time inside churches in the northeast recently but he wasn't there praying, police say he was there stealing. that came to an end thursday night when sykes broke in the our lady of calvary church and inside waiting were two under cover officers. you might the say accused thief william sykes, seen on video break nothing our lady of calvary church never had a prayer because waiting inside where sykes had struck before stealing from donation boxes were undercover officers, dennie claire and his partner. >> he was extremely surprised. he actually, you know, attempted to run out of the side door. >> reporter: he says they quickly, chased and tackled the suspect. the two officers both catholics, explaining that

after spending the first night in the church, without the any success, on the second night, they did seek some divine guidance. >> we lit a candle and we put money in the poor box and said a prayer we would get this gentlemen. >> he got a big surprise as you can see the video. i'm happy. >> reporter: facilities manager joe oliveri work with the the police setting a trap, mounting a security camera. high five's exchanged by officers as they took suspect into custody a sign of just how much this meant to the police, and to the parish. >> it is gratifying, you know, it makes the job worth it. >> it is relief to us because this is an ongoing thing. he broke in the poor boxes in the upper church and lower church. >> reporter: sadly father john says that the suspect who allegedly had a hypodermic needle in his pocket, instead of breaking in, needed only to have knock on the door of his rectory a few feet away where not only money, but kindness and mercy were

waiting. >> all he had to do was ask and we could have helped him. >> reporter: now court records show that sides has had a history of five prior arrests, at least for burglaries, and has one open case awaiting trial for possession of drugs. police say's parentally was able to get the a key to the church somehow to allegedly allow him to break in and sources also say he is now under investigation for other poor box thefts and one other northeast philadelphia parish. live from police headquarters i'm walt hunter for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thanks for that. tire slashing spree hits one delaware community, and no more than a dozen residents are hefty repairs bills. damage was concentrated in the area have on west 11th and juniper streets. neighbor called authorities after seeing three teenage boys slashing tires, on a new castle will county police car. in all 18 vehicles were vandalized overnight. >> it is ridiculous. these people have to go to

headlines, coming your way next on the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley right after our broadcast. shocking charges against a pediatrician after a surprising discovery in his garage. six five-year old doctor jane wilderman is accused of growing and distributing marijuana. the fire department stumbled upon the pot after a pickup truck caught fire in the doctor's driveway on brookside drive-in holland. >> the fire fighters while doing a room to room search found two rooms that had been converted, for the purpose of growing marijuana there were ventilation systems, red lights, heat warming pads in addition to that numerous gardening equipment. >> doctor wilderman who has an office or bustleton avenue in philadelphia is free, on bail tonight. we have learned new information about the the suspects charged in the health scare at shore medical center in south jersey. authorities say that the pharmacist accused of stealing

pain medications, and putting more than 200 patients at risk for hiv, hepatitis, has been in trouble before. in 2002 the state ordered fredrick mcleash to surrender his license for stealing pain medications from a cvs. his license was reinstated in 2004, and in 2006, pennsylvania placed mclesion probation for two years for unspecified infractions. >> as we near end of black history month and approach woman's history month a germantown museum is celebrating lives of ordinary, yet extraordinary black women and girls. and about dinner and a movie perhaps at 11:00 it will feel like the teens in a few spots. certainly bundle up. temperatures climbing, 40's tomorrow and then we will jump to 60 degrees on sunday. monies mild as well, just a chance for sprinkle. temperatures may get higher then this the lower 60's in the 62, 36 rake perhaps as we await arrival of that weak cool front. it has been a cloudy month. the feels like we have not seen the sun we have only had three days this month that qualified as full sunshine. twelve partly cloudy days and ten, completely cloudy taste, it has been a wet, kind of messy february but it is a warm winter. we have had 20 days of 60 or above this winter that is most on record for december through february season and it looks like we may add at least two more to that total before we finish the month. overnight gradual clearing, gusty wind, brisk cool saturday but mostly sunny not a bad day but save your big outdoor plans, golfing plans, bike ride plans, things like that save those for sunday.
