a serial church burglary suspect gets a stunning surprise when police say he tried to steel from a church's collection box. take a look at this surveillance video from northeast philadelphia. investigators say it shows william sides breaking into our lady of calvary church. moments later, he was chased out of the church and arrested. the men doing the chasing, were two undercover police officers. they staked out the church after sides allegedly struck twice before. >> he was extremely surprised. he actually -- you know, attempted to run out the side door. >> we lit a candle and put money in the poor box and said a prayer we would get this gentleman. >> the church's pastor says he would have helped sides if he would have just asked. walt hunter will have more on it undercover stake-out in about 30 minutes. a tire slashing spree hits one delaware community and now more than a dozen residents are stuck footinging hefty repair bills. attach was concentrated in the

area of west 11th and juniper streets. neighbor called authorities after seeing three teenage boys slashing tires on new castle county police car. in all, 18 vehicles were vanillased. >> it's ridiculous, these people have to go to work >> makes me angry. to go around vandalizinging other people's cars then we have to pay for it. >> police tried to track the teens with help from a police dime but were unsuccessful. if caught, they face criminal mischief charges and fines. a pediatrician is facing charges this morning for allegedly growing put marijuana out of his bucks county home. garage of a pediatrician and rehabilitation center doctor. >> one of the firefighters, while doing a room to room search, found two rooms that had been converted for the purpose of growing marriage. >> there were ventilation systems, grow lights, heat warming pads. in addition to that, numerous gardening equipment. >> police say 65-year-old dr. jan wider man whose office is on bustleton avenue in philadelphia is charged with growing and distribution of pot plants. after the fire department found two growing rooms in his garage. a car caught fire in the driveway and spread to the home. he is a doctor's doctor. he is there for his patients 24/7. he treats them both medically and wholisticly. he treats the whole person, people love him. wider man's attorney says he needs to review the evidence, but the doctor has been

likely go home tomorrow. the national marian ands anderson in center city is unveil an exhibits. showcasing new dresses today, it's a labor of love from two women who loved anderson's legacy. "eyewitness news" anita o is live that now gettinging a history lesson on one of philadelphia's most treasured voices. good morning, anita. >> reporter: good morning, rahel. i'm standing in music room number one, this is the first room you see when you walk into marian anderson's home. this was purchased back in 1924. so there's so much history here and you can see this room is dedicated to the early stages of marian's life. the picture you're looking at right now is of marian and her two sisters, mother, her dresses from very early age hanging in this room and also an original violin that marian anderson used to play before she sang, of course, and an expert in all of this history is the museum's ceo jillian, she's joining us now.

can you tell the what people who show up today can expect to see at this exhibit. >> we're hoping that everyone will come today and enjoy the celebration in marian's 119th birthday. also wonderful exhibit that features great music. sheet music pieces that are very rare. have never been seen before. incredible recordings and albums and photography that matches price less one of of a kind gowns and costumes that our great marian anderson lived, loved and wore during the 20th century. >> reporter: in all you didn't know her personally you are an artist yourself and you have become an expert in really love her legacy, so what has her story meant to you? >> it's meant everything to me. marian is someone that i feel every little girl should look up to and i certainly did when i was little and becoming a buttoning artist in the philadelphia area, and her story is one of pride and one of hope. and one of determination in the

face of much adversity and because of such things, i feel that i got a chance to do so. she was denied access to attend the philadelphia college of performing arts because she was african-american. i'm a graduate twice over of the university of the arts. had is the same school. i feel that because of everything that marian sacrificed and suffered i was able to walk through those doors and succeed. it's a wonderful thing to give back at a great museum like this and let the world know that marian did it and you can too. >> that's great story and thank you so much for your time today. over here, we have ms. burton. she was marian anderson's first men ty. you will be playing live music for us and throughout the day today, if you want to catch that, which check it out from 10:00 to 5:00. admission at a special

straightening comb to like potter ri, to works of art, to clothing, ironing boards, washing board, any number of really beautiful's interestinging things. >> at the colored girl's museum, they don't two things are exactly the same, because no to perspectives are. >> all of the rooms in this house have been converted into stories and installations by artists from the community who are telling different stories about the ordinary extraordinary colored women in their lives or themselves through their work or through objects that have been submitted into the colored girls' museum. >> the founder dubois says the thought of such a museum has been with her since her college days. since the fall of 2015, the museum, which is also dubois's home, has sat in it's physical form on new hall street. while it's meant for all to enjoy, the different objects

warmer. feeling a little bit more like spring. even today, not a bad day, little bit cold this morning, weather watchers are saying you need the hats and the gloves this morning with temperatures well down no the low 20's. even teens when you factor in the winds, let's break down some of these neighborhoods for you. heading to interior south jersey, mar go simons 21 this hour, feels much colder with the breeze. chesterfield new jersey, ed is sitting at 20, peter in lawrenceville 25, even for this time of years ago these below average temperatures, lynn springer at 24, mid 20's in middletown delaware. greg mccoy in marshalton delaware 23 and bill at 22 degrees, the good news is today, the wind much lighter. yesterday we had gusts 35 to near 40 miles per hour. look at these sustained winds less than type of miles an hour. that's a good thing this morning. at least as far as the wind chills go. let's take you to berks county.

getting areed nice sunrise buy a. had a hour. it's 22 in berks county right now. kutztown with a west northwest breeze a three miles per hour. but it is late february, even with the sun it will help warm things up, a little bit of a slow warmup. temperatures only in the 40's. tomorrow we're talking spring-like temperatures, that will extend into next week. then we'll also talk about our rain chance, i'll show you that in a minute. the month of february hasn't been that sunny if you think about it. we break down the days, only three days were totally clear with mostly sunny skies. 13 were partly sunny. then we had a lot of overcast skies through the month so far. ten days, but we're going to see a good deal of sun today and tomorrow. so at least what was make some progress there. cold pocket of air, still over the ohio valley a loft in the atmosphere. some of those clouds may stream through our region. mix of sun and clouds.

the key thing is the direct, they're going to switch out of the southwest bringing back the milder temperatures for the next few days, tomorrow more of a south wind sustain at about 15 miles per hour. then even on monday, the winds turn a little bit more westerly. that's still a mild flow. after today, we're going to have a nice stretch of some above average temperatures. here's the setup. high pressure to our south, temperatures in the 40's with sunshine, the high starts to move offshore tomorrow. that brings us more of that southwest wind, now we're talking about temperatures near 60 degrees away from the water. especially from the city on south and east. then on monday, still mild, 60 degree temperatures, there will be a week cold front that comes through, maybe bringing a sprinkle north of the city small chance. let's time things out. not much happening today with mix of sun and clouds, tomorrow looks great, great way to finish off the weekend, mostly sunny skies as we head into sunday night and monday, there's the front not a lot of moisture with it. we're back to sunny skies for monday afternoon then into

wednesday, that's our next storm system. today though, temperatures struggle to get to the 40's. mid 40's at best tonight's it's no the as cold. we're down to the low mid 30's. so that's closer to average for this time of year, tomorrow, well to the 50's, even up into the lehigh valley. we're getting close to 60, but best shot to reach it will be around city on south and west. today few degrees below average in the mid 40's. 35 for low temperature, few clouds around. there you go for sunday. up to 60, 60 temperatures continue into monday. still it's not bad on tuesday, upper 50's and wednesday, steady showers at times through the day, that's pretty much almost a wash-out. you're going to need the umbrella. by the end of next week, cool back down, maybe rain and snow showers for friday, winter still holding strong. >> still a nylex little stretch. >> definitely. on the cbs3 health watch. no knife eye legitimate. nonsurgical alternatives to plastic surgery are more popular than ever and sometimes the

morning. we are seeing similar numbers in the outside suburbs, 22 mountain holley new jersey, mid 20's in quaker town as well. the good news is the windchills are less than ten miles an hour. currently on exposed skin feels like 18 in wilmington, 19 in allentown and 20 around philadelphia. stormscan 3, we have clouds thinning out. skies will be mostly sunny this morning, few more clouds will pop up during the afternoon, we're dry, we're in a nice quiet weather pattern the next few days. temperatures still below average for late february. high of friday in philadelphia. low 40's at the shore and mid 30's in the poconos. over the next few days, spots could reach 60 degrees. i'll show you where they can happen and how long it lasts when i show you the seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you. a philadelphia police officer suffers minor injuries in an early morning car crash. it happened around 3:00 a.m. at

the intersection of bryn mawr and park side. an animal ran in front of the officer's cruiser. he swerved and hit a pole. 45-year-old officer is a 20 year veteran of the philadelphia police force. this morning he is said to be in stable condition a woman is stabed in the kensington neighborhood. it happened just after 2:00 near the market/frankford el hundred ton station. investigators tell us this was an attempted robbery but nothing was taken, no details on the victim's condition. a surprise serial burglar allegedly caught in the act tries to stale from the poor. the trap was set at a catholic church in the northeast part of philadelphia. surveillance video captures the arrest. walt hunter shows us how surprise stake-out unfolded. >> reporter: you might say accused thief william sides seen on video breaking into our lady of calvary church never had a prayer. because waiting inside were sides had allegedly stuck twice

before stealing from donation boxes were undercover officers denny claire and his partner. >> he was extremely surprised. he actually, you know, attempted to run out the side door. >> reporter: claire says they quickly chased and tackled the suspect. the two officers both catholics, explaining that after spending the first night in the church without any success on the second night, they did seek divine guidance. >> we let a candle. put money in the poor box and said a prayer we would get this gentleman. >> he got a big surprise as you can see in the video. i'm happy. >> reporter: facilities manager joe worked with police setting the trap, mounting a security camera. the high fives exchanged by the officers as they took the suspect no custody, a sign of how much this meant to the police and the parish. >> it's gratifying. makes the job worth it. >> it's a relief to us, because this is an ongoing thing. he broke into poor boxes in the

upper church and lower church. >> reporter: sadly father john says the suspect who allegedly had a hyperder mic neomed needle in his pocket. need only have knocked on the door a few feet away. where not only money but kindness were waiting. >> reporter: sides had a history of at least five arrests for burglaries in the past and is now awaiting trial on an open drug possession case. police believe he was able to somehow get a key to get into the church and sources say he's under investigation for other thefts at at least one other parish in the northeast. at police headquarters, walt hunter cbs3 "eyewitness news". shocking charges against the pediatrician after a surprising discovery in his garage. 65-year-old doctor jan wider man

and in 2006, pennsylvania placed mcleash on probation two years for undisclosed infractions. a set of local police officers are in the spotlight. they're the only mother and daughter at the camden county police department. and "eyewitness news" anchor jessica dean spent time with them to find out why law enforcement runs in the family. >> this is where i grew up. this is where i rode my big wheels. >> reporter: camden county police lieutenant linda spent her childhood walking his neighborhood with one dream in mind. grow up to be a police officer. >> i do the law enforcement family, role models, and just seeing them begin their careers, it was amazinging to me. i didn't want to be anything else. >> as she patrolled the streets is, one person in particular was paying close attention. >> we're the first district officer menendez. >> what drew me in to be a police officer was my mother. >> good morning. >> watchinging her live her

dream. and she was just a big influence in my life. >> reporter: they are the only mother and daughter on the camden county police force. with different ranks, schedules and districts. they don't see a lot of each other at work. officer menendez says there's no special treatment. >> i feel like they won't look at me and treat me different because of her. >> reporter: but the shared experience means mom is also mentor. >> i believe it brought it closer. we're close before, obviously. now we have something else to connect with. we can talk about work. i can cometory if something bothering me. >> reporter: do you ever worry about each other on parole or work. >> he's not out on it street as much as i am. >> i try not to. i try not to because i guess i had that law enforcement mentality. you have to understand there's a possibility you might not come home. fact that i support mi daughter and her law enforcement career, i have to accept that also. >> reporter: in the meantime they got work to do. routine and officer.

she would have been celebrating her 1 meanth birthday today. but here, you see in this photo, that is blainch lyles. she joins us now. can you tell the looking at this photo, what kind of memories does it bring back. >> my goodness, just giving me goose pimples. it was a celebration that came for her birthday. i was so honored to be part of the company. her nephew was there, with his set of drums. he was quite a drummer at the time. in fact, he was able to play with stan ken ton awhile. jimmy was very much a part of the family. the next generation, so to speak. >> reporter: you were her only mentee. can you describe what kind of person she was?

what she meant. >> gracious, kind and thoughtful. she was so unique, unlike many other artists, she didn't have any false pretenses about her she was kind to everyone who came -- came in touch with her. wherever you are right now, this was her home she purchased in 1924. it was just a great, great honor to be in her presence. >> reporter: thank you so much for your time today. she will be playing live music throughout the day. there will be live performances as well. you can catch all of the dresses that marian wore. so much going on and so much history that you can learn by stepping through these doors from ten to 5:00.

macy's is changing it's coupon policy and will no longer accept coupe upons for clearance items. macy's long been known for it's stackable dollar and percent off coupons. newer the new policy, coupons will now apply only to full

price and sale items. macy's says clearance items will still be deeply discounted. jc penney living input to it's name. retailer is offering it's house brands for just one cent. customers can buy an arizona branded item at full price and a second arizona item for a penny. the campaign runs all year with jc penney rolling out other items for a penny throughout the year. the chain's latest effort in it's turn around attempt. the price of a first class stamp will soon go down and it's not a sale or promotion. back in 2014, the u.s. postal service was granted permission to temporarily increase stamp prices. the price hike was contingent upon a plan price drop this year. that surcharge is slated to end. cost of mail a one ounce letter will drop from 49 to 47 cents. commercial prices will also

guest friday. a deer jumped through an open window and into the building. >> reporter: this one-year-old buc caused quite a commotion north arlington middle school. squeezed it's way into the school using an open window, bust add wall knocked over a water cooler trying to get back out. >> my teacher was freaking out. i just calmed down and i see that window open with a deer. with a buc. so i just like, oh, ok. what is happening here? >> reporter: students were in the middle of being dismissed from school. teachers, patterns and students alike watching the spectacle snapped photos, a little hand-on education from mother nature. >> there was a lot of kids. basically got scared. ran right through the window over there. you can a lot of the hair on it. the prints on it. scared our staffs inside and our dean of students locked the door, closed the door when it

new jersey also in the 20's. everybody is below freezing. you factor in the wind. it is feel like the teens in some spots. at least we have a nice sunrise going on or happening right now. this was a little bit earlier in philadelphia. the clear skies maybe mid to high level clouds. we'll take you out to chesterfield. you can see patchy clouds there. that's what we're going to deal with this morning not afternoon, overall a nice quiet pattern. let's take you to the poconos, where it's actually a good weekend to hit the slopes snow guns were cranking through overnight hours with this cold dry air mass in place, they're able to throw down nice fresh snow for today into tomorrow. hit it up for some late season skiing and riding. talk about winter warmth. we're going to get in on this again over the next couple days, so far, you go back to december through february. 20 days of 60 degrees or more. that sets a new record. again, before february is done, probably have another day or two of reaching 60 again.

so so far for the month, february actually averaging above average. may have felt cold if you think about what december was like, that was really warm. overall over two degrees above average snowfalls below average for the month. 3.3 inches. we average over eight for february. february is typically our snowiest month for philadelphia. quiet this weekend. high pressure situated just to our south. still a batch of clouds moving through the ohio valley. cold pocket of air that helps produce a few clouds but we'll keep things nice and dry. i mentioned the good ski conditions. 36 to 48 inches. blue mountain. all the trails are pretty much open at all resorts. we're in a quiet weather pattern. a lot of sunshine today and tomorrow. high pressure drips offshore tomorrow. that brings more of a south to southwest wind. helping to warm us back up to 60. that warmth continues into monday. but that will be a cold front slides through upon morning. by the time it gets here most of the moisture breaks up, so maybe

you get a sprinkle. that's about it. otherwise just a few clouds, and we're back at it with sunshine for monday afternoon. temperatures today little bit chilly for late february. mid 40's at best. for the warmest spots. not as cold as we have to kick out the cold air mass, some of the warmer air starts to move in's noticeably warmer tomorrow, lehigh valley has a shot at reaching 60. especially in philadelphia. so a nice warm finish to the weekend. the jet stream still to our south over us right now. that's why that cold air lingers today. it's out of here tomorrow. the jet stream is on the move back northward for sunday into monday. we get a push of warmer air. it's pretty mild through the middle of the week. by the end of next week, there are signs of another push of colder air. at a, 45 degrees with sunshine and clouds. tonight not as cold. few clouds around life for the low temperature. then tomorrow, up at 60 degrees. same deal on monday. clouds around monday morning. 58 for the high on tuesday. that's not bad. march comes in like a lamb, nice and quiet.
