just before the structure gave way. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thank you so much for joining us. the building came crashing down this morning on the 1400 block of south patton street in grays ferry. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh spoke way neighbor witr who saw it all happen. >> we saw the building go down boom fast, really fast. >> reporter: all that remains is rubble. >> i saw the building which youly imploded within itself. >> reporter: neighbors say a fifth generation warp we are shop and the apartment above it came crashing down around 7:30 saturday morning. >> you actually heard the bricks crack. >> reporter: gregory cooper said he immediately ran drown his third story bedroom across the street to see if anyone was trapped. >> i hardy voice from the back of the house hollering help. >> reporter: a man inside when the building collapsed narrowly escaped death. he's now recovering at penn presbyterian hospital. >> he was pretty much probably slept in the back bedroom and that's probably what saved his life because he was at the top

of the rubble. >> reporter: those on scene say it's fortunate that the building collapsed when it did in the way that it did. >> kids go up and down this block to school right there and my first thought was my god, if this would have happened on a weekday when the kids was getting out of school, you know, it could have been worse than what it is today. >> reporter: didn't collapse into the other buildings that are nearby and no one was in the barbershop or on the street at the time of the collapse except for that one victim who has been taken to the hospital. >> reporter: crews spent much of the day cutting electric and gas lines to several property and preparing the site for demolition and cleanup. licenses and inspections commissioner david perry tells me there was no history of violations at this building. reporting in grays ferry, an fleet at a oh, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, after some chilly and blustery days it looks like temperatures are at least on the way back up at the end of the weekend. meteorologist lauren casey is in the weather center to tell us all about this p weekend warmup. lauren. >> thanks, natasha. yeah, it was kind of a chilly

start to our day today, temperatures dropping down into the teens at many of our reporting sites. down to 19 degrees this morning in atlantic city, 18 millville down into the teens in the poconos and we bottomed out at 27 degrees. chilly in philadelphia, high temperatures did climb up into the middle 40's today but we had that breeze but a little bit chilly and now clear skies conditions, our temperature is 43 degrees in center city philadelphia. still dealing with that breeze out of the west making it feel more like middle 30's right now. so it will be a cold evening but so far the overall trend for our meteorological winter which constitutes december january and february, the days we've been at 60 degrees or warmer than that, 20 and that now is a record beating 16 back in 2001-2002. also in the 40's to 50 and then 15 days we had at or above 60 back in the 70's and we're going tack on even more 60-degree days and bump that 20 up as we head into the next couple of days and i'll till how many days at 60 you can expect and when they arrive coming up.

>> thanks so much. a memorial service 19 time is planned for a former miss new jersey cara mccollum. it's set for march 12th at the ocean city tabernacle hosted by the miss new jersey education foundation. meantime funeral services will take place in mccollum's hometown of florence city arkansas. mccollum was severely hurt in a february 15th car accident on route 55 in south jersey. she later succumbed to her injuries. also a police officer swerves to avoid an animal and crashes his cruise near a pole. this happened about 3:00 this morning in wynnefield. the officer was taken to penn presbyterian medical center with minor injuries. he is a 20-year veteran of the force. fiery crash early this morning in los angeles it's now left three people dead and three others critically injured. police say the crash was caused by two drivers racing each other. it happened on the southbound five freeway just after midnight. one of the cars racing hit a ups tractor-trailer. one driver has been arrested

and could face vehicular manslaughter charges. authorities are still searching for the other driver. yoko ono was released from the hospital after dealing with severe flu like symptoms. the 83 he-year-old artist and singer spent the night at mount sinai in new york city. earlier reports that she suffered stroke are not true according to her representatives. ono is the widow of john lennon. her son sean ono lennon says her mother was dehydrated and tired. the democratic presidential primary is under way in south carolina. hill shill looking to cement herself with a key voting block while bernie sanders focuses on soup tuesday. cbs news correspondent craig boswell tells us what is at stake this time. >> reporter: voters headed to the polls in south carolina's democratic primary. hillary clinton has a huge lead over bernie sanders in the polls here. clinton wants to establish herself as the favorite among black voters.

>> when you look at all the candidates that's out there, there's nobody more qualified. >> reporter: but some voters see sanders as more relate tam. >> he just seems like such a nice person, like whenever he's on tv i just see like through the screen like he seems so nice. >> reporter: clinton crisscrossed the state a you will week trying to protect her lead. she, her husband and daughter did a combined nine campaign events just yesterday. both candidates are now looking ahead to super tuesday when more than 800 delegates are up for grabs. today clinton courted voters in alabama. >> i know there are a lot of people in this state who want to continue the progress we've made. >> reporter: while bernie sanders struggled to gain traction in the palmetto state he shifted his focus to texas. he spent the day campaigning in austin. >> if all of you come out to vote and you bring your friends and your neighbors and your coworkers, we are going to win here in texas. >> reporter: 222 delegates are at stake in the lone star state, the largest prize for democrats next week. craig boswell for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, on the republican side, chris christie is quickly becoming one of donald trump's most effective supporters. the new jersey governor joined the frontrunner at a rally in arkansas today. christie dished up more attack lines against rivals marco rubio and ted cruz. rubio and cruise returned fire on the campaign trail in georgia. they're stumping to stop trump's momentum ahead of the super tuesday primaries now just three days away. >> donald trump's record is not that of a can conservative. donald has agreed with hillary clinton on issue after issue after issue. >> here's the one tweeter he put out. he put out a picture of me having makeup put on me at the debate which is amazing to me that a guy with the worse spray tan in america is attacking me. >> light weight rubio, total light weight and little mouth

street in south philadelphia hosted an open house event today. organizers unveiled an exhibit showcasing newly curated dresses and photos of the great couldn't traffic light tow. the celebration included the dedication of an oil painting of anderson that was created back in 1938. >> i came here and i knew that this was a place where it belonged. you see all the memorabilia here and the wonderful people who look after the museum and i decided that this is where it belonged at the home of marion anderson. >> beautiful. the painting has not been seen publicly until now. and the kimmel center will continue to be the home of the annual marion anderson awards ceremony and gala. officials have announced a new 15 year partnership. now the first nazarene baptist church in camden celebrated black history month with a visit from the daughter of malcolm x. a community activist and author, she spoke to a large group this afternoon. shabazz promotes higher

education for at-risk youth and also interfaith dialogue to build bridges between cultures. you may have not known this. i didn't until today. it is international polar bear day and lauren casey is excited about this. the large bears are one of the world's most threatened land predators. today it's all about raising awareness to protect them. biologists say climate change possess the greatest threat to polar bears because ice is decreasing around the north pole. 26,000 of the animals remain in the wild. they are beautiful animals, aren't they. >> beautiful animals, yes. >> i'm glad i'm not feeling like a polar bear today, i mean like it's not cold enough for them to hang around here and i'm glad. >> cold and blustery. tomorrow is going to be a big difference. going to feel nice a little taste of spring. much milder as we head into our sunday with temperatures soaring. we'll be about 15 degrees warmer as we head into tomorrow afternoon and yes, march is just around the

corner. we're almost there. and looks at this point like it will come in like a lamb but the lambness won't last for long as we head into the end of next week, temperatures are going to get a little bit colder and we do have a chance, a very small chance at seeing a little bit of snow but the focus is of course on spring. meteorological spring begins in just a couple of days and then astronomical spring begins on march 20th, that's the vernal eke quinn knocks and that occurs at 12:30 in the morning we'll ring in the new season. everyone looking forward to that. temperatures right now at 43 degrees. right around where we should be at this time of night this time of season. 38 in allentown, 39 degrees in atlantic city. but checking in on temperatures up wind extremely mild into the 50's and 60's and we go even further west up into the upper great lakes and northern plains, record breaking temperatures today in the 70's. 75 in omaha, 75 in portions of the central plains and as we head overnight tonight temperatures still cool but

not as cold as last night. mostly clear with less winds and a southwesterly breeze around five to 10 miles an hour. for sunday a beautiful day to get outdoors, bright sunshine, a little bit breezy but that's not going to bother you because of that high temperature of 60 degrees as we head into our sunday afternoon. but storm scan3 showing us the trend of the day today, high pressure in control promoting that sinking area, very stable air and very sunny air as well which really has been sparse so far this month as far as climatologically sunny days. today was only our fourth of the month. we've had 13 partly cloudy days and 10 cloudy days so another round of sunshine tomorrow i think is well deserved and future weather going to show us that as we head into the day tomorrow, really not a cloud in sight. we head into the evening hours, still very quiet. fast forward to your monday morning commute, mainly dry but we'll see a few showers starting to sneak in up into the lehigh valley. a weak cold front is going to drop in so we'll see a line of

light shower activity, sprinkle activity come through mainly in the morning hours. by midday that shower activity starts to diminish and we'll see quick clearing on the backside of this cold front with sunshine likely returning monday afternoon and monday evening before that sun does set but sunshine is the story for tomorrow as is that mild air a beautiful day all across the region. sunny breezy and mild down the shore, huge right near 60 degrees an gorgeous day in the poconos. mostly sunny and breezy well above average with high temperatures flirting with 50 degrees in the mostly cloudy notice tomorrow and then on monday, another mild day in store, 60 degrees a high temperature. see that weak cold front come through that could generate a few light showers and sprinkles mainly in the morning. tuesday is the start of man it comes in like a lamb. do have some high clouds there but 58 degrees. it's going to feel pretty nice. shower chance arrives on wednesday, breezy as well and then we do get colder in the long range, 40's on thursday, some upper 30's on friday. chance of a wintry mix. it's looking pretty slim and

villanova beat marquette and still leads the big east by a game over xavier with two games left in the regular season. let's head to temple. owls playing central florida second half owls up by three make it six. final 10 seconds the game tied up. quentin makes that three. the owls up by two. central florida one last chance. we have aj davis, his shot is no good. so, temple escapes with a 63-61 victory. sixers with the day off. they'll start a two game road trip tomorrow night against order do. last night they dropped their seventh straight 103-94 to the wizards and the phillies will kick off their exhibition season tomorrow against university of tampa. last year they did lose to the college team. pete mackanin does not than to happen again and knows exactly what he's looking for during the exhibition season.
