san diego pier. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, the threat of another round of potentially dangerous storms hangs over the mississippi valley. the worst threat of tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds is in northern mississippi, alabama, parts of tennessee, and kentucky. more than 8 million people are at an enhanced risk of severe weather. last night, a string of twisters touched down in mississippi, alabama, and louisiana. one hit in eastern mississippi between columbus and the alabama state line. damaging at least a dozen homes. one young resident took shelter in his truck. >> there was a lot of wind. a big boom. then hail was hitting the truck. and all of a sudden i'm driving and not driving nil more and then i'm in a ditch and the power line fell! >> so far, there are no reports of serious injuries.

now to politics. donald trump is trying to mend fences with the republican party while explaining his controversial comments on abortion. all this comes ahead of next week's wisconsin primary, a crucial contest for trump and for those trying to stop him. a just released poll of likely republican voters finds trump trailing ted cruz by ten points. a trump loss in wisconsin would dramatically increase the chances of a contested convention. don champion is here in new york. >> reporter: no doubt a trump loss next week would offer new hope to rival ted cruz, still dealing with controversy surrounding his campaign manager and comments about abortion. this could be one of the trump campaign's most vulnerable moments yet this election. donald trump is still trying to clarify his controversial remarks on abortion. appearing on fox news last night, the republican front-runner suggested that

msnbc edited the town hall in which he inserted women should be punished for having abortions if the procedure were to become illegal. >> you really have to hear the whole long. this was a long convoluted question and a long discussion he and they just cut it out. >> reporter: in a statement, msnbc maintained no part of the exchange between trump's chris matthews was editeded out. trump met with gop leader yesterday to discuss allocation. rival ted cruz is leading trump in wisconsin where is he counting on a win next friday. >> no doubt that if donald trump is a kim kardashian kind of candidate. he sits on twitter and makes a lot of noise but no solution to fix the problem. >> reporter: trump follows bernie sanders and hillary clinton among women registered voters. clinton bashed trump yesterday and set herself apart from sanders on women's right. >> i know senator sanders

supports the right for a woman's choice to choose, but i think they will endorse me because i have led on this issue. >> reporter: sanders is ahead of clinton in wisconsin, but still trails her by a wide with margin in the dealt count. delegate count. while a loss in wisconsin would be a big blow to trump, the next contest will happen on april 19th in new york. of course, it's trump's home state and offers up one of the biggest pries when it comes to delegates. a lot to watch. >> indeed. don champion in new york, thanks a lot, don. coming up on "cbs this morning," bernie sanders joins us to discuss his battle with hillary clinton for the democratic nomination and other campaign issues. this morning, north korea reportedly fired a short range ballistic missile into the sea. south korean military official sayed missile was fired from north korea's east coast. if confirmed it is a later of series of launch by the north

and military exercises between south korea and the united states. a string of shootings left two people dead and seven others wounded in chicago in a fatal attack. four people got out of a van and opened fire across the street from an elementary school. a man and a woman were killed. in another attack, a man was left in critical condition when he was shot. he was streaming himself online when with the attack occurs. the motive is unknown. the gunman hopped into a car and got away. virginia officials are trying to figure out why a gunman fatally shot a state trooper at a richmond bus station. chad der myer approached the suspect who pulled a gun and opened fire in a crowded

station. >> i just heard pops and i've never actually heard a real gunshot before, so i didn't really know what was going on. then i saw everyone just ducking, so i followed. >> other troops shot the gunman dead. two women sustained nonlife-threatening injuries. president obama hosted a two-day summit in washington. more than 50 governments attended. today's session focus on preventing isis and other extremists from obtaining nuclear weapon materials. "wall street journal" says it may take months for the agency to determine the capabilities of the technique. a third-party helped the fbi decode the phone used by san bernardino attacker syed farook. the agency isn't saying how it was done or what it found. the key suspect in the paris attacks that killed 130 people will be returned to france.

belgian authorities yesterday approved the extradition of salah abdeslam but no date has been set. he was arrested two weeks ago in brussels. two young mormon missionaries who were hurt in the brussels bombings are expected to make a full recovery. doctors in utah say mason wells and joseph empey are in good spirits. the homecoming overwhelmed empey's father. >> just seeing his eyes and seeing that he was okay was probably the most peace i had had in my whole life. >> a third missionary who was wounded in the attacks is hospitalized in brussels. with the backing of their team, five of the most prominent players on the national women's soccer team have filed a wage discrimination complaint against the u.s. soccer federation launching a legal attack. goalkeeper hope solo and midfielder megan rapino and

carly lloyd. as jim axelrod reports making much less than a successful men's team isn't their only issue. >> reporter: when the u.s. women's soccer team won the world cup last year, they had the highest tv ratings for any soccer game in american history, men or women! they also got a nice parade and a bonus from the u.s. soccer federation of $75,000 for each player, according to the filing. compare that to the men's team. if they won a world cup, they would get more than $390,. hope solo one of the five players to sign the complaint told "cbs this morning" that has to change. >> this is a time we need to push for equality and push for what is right and people are paying attention. >> reporter: the women's team says it generates as much as or more revenue than the men and get paid four times less.

run! >> you better get out of there. >> dockside terror. seven people are hurt when a cruise ship rams into a san diego pier. a stuck gear prevented the 150-foot boat from stopping as it approached the embarcadero tourist area. some were taken off stretchers and three hospitalized but none of the injuries are life-threatening. baseball great jackie robinson gets an official apology and the photo behind an hijacker photo. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "newsweek" reports why an air egypt flight attendant posed with a picture with the hijacker this week. co-pilot said it was relayed to authorities on what is that so they could identify the man and analyze the device he was wearing. the man said it was a bomb but it proved to be fake.

al.com reports that alabama governor robert bentley bought several disposable cell phones last year. the former state official who says bentley had an affair with a political aide says the governor changed phones frequently. bentley sent only a few messages to the aide on his state-issued phone. >> i can assure the people of alabama, there is nothing there. >> the aide resigned. one lawmaker plans to start impeachment proceedings next week. the st. louis post dispatch hires a black officer as a police chief in ferguson, missouri. he was a homicide detective in miami, florida. they found racism in ferguson's police department after a white officer killed an unarmed black teen in 2014. "the new york times" reports a budget deal that gradually raises the state's minute wage to $15 an hour. new york is the second state to make the change, following california. the pay level will be reached by

2018 in "the new york times" but rises later in wealthy suburbs. yahoo! sports says philadelphia will apologize to jackie robinson. robinson broke big league baseball's color barrier 69 years ago. some members of the phillies threatened to boycott games against the dodgers. the city will honor robinson and apologize to his widow on april 15th. ♪ run, donkey. a police car dash cam captures a donkey dashing for freedom in arkansas. a rancher helped to return the donkey to its owner. a long running battle against sea lions rages on in a story in oregon. yesterday, students came up with yet another new idea to scare them off. our portland affiliate koin reports. >> reporter: students from napa high school students brought in the railing they fabricated themselves.

sea lions warmed up to those air dancer and scared off a few initially a couple of weeks but now they are back. but the railings from the kids from napa high could be a game-chang game-changer. >> we recognize the effectiveness of the steel bars at other docks, at other boat docks and we also recognize the effectiveness of the car lot flags so we are combining the two. >> railings are a physical barrier. the kids are welded eyelets on to the barriers to stream cable and car lot flags through to add a psychological barrier as well. >> we excelled in welding before we started this. >> since we started this project literally full-scale last week, there isn't one student that doesn't have a hand in it, you know, throughout the day as we are making them. >> reporter: tim says the kids are learning a lot and they are exciting about contributing to something outside of the classroom.
