tv   Eyewitness News at 430  CBS  April 8, 2016 4:30am-5:01am EDT

4:30 am
this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. it is parade day in philly. in just a few hours our national champions, villanova wildcats, will be marching down market street. what you need to know if you're going to the parade or just looking to avoid the gridlock. >> but will the weather hold out for the parade? snow coming this weekend, katie times it out. >> amtrak demanding changes right now. we'll tell but them, plus, new details about sunday's deadly crash. >> today is friday, april 8th, good morning, i'm jim donovan. >> i'm brooke thomas. we're getting your day started with a check on weather and traffic with katie and meisha. >> happy friday. serious accident on christopher columbus
4:31 am
boulevard. i'll touch base on that coming up in just a moment. >> thankfully the weather is quieting down for a time. yes, the s word is in this forecast, snow on the horizon for us, eventually we have to take the dose of winter as it comes. but, for now, yes, cooler day by comparison to yesterday, heck of a lot quieter. take you back out to the wide zoom on storm scan3, actually the same system trying to retreat. you can see how it is cleared out at the local zoo. very quickly we check on the winds speeds. that will continue to be running theme from yesterday. the wind, notice, though, it is starting to turn more westerly. yesterday it was much more southerly after winds flow. now, as it turns more westerly, eventually northwesterly, chill will settle in, then comes along the next system tomorrow. here's where we stand temperature wise, if you recall, this same time yesterday, many of you were still sitting in the 50's, well, that is definitely a nice distant memory at this point, 45 at the airport, pair of four's in dover, trenton, so it is colder and again, with the breeze out there, you notice it, especially if you're out in center city
4:32 am
where the skyscrapers essentially act as winds tunnel. so despite the return of some sun for the villanova parade, low to mid 50's, cooler than average by about 10 degrees, and with the breeze it will feel cooler. so i highly suggest you, a, come out to the parade, b, have the appropriate gear ready, sweatshirt, fleece, it will be a cooler day. >> no t-shirt. but always that one in the pack that has the sleeveless, tank top. >> usually 20 something college kid, right? >> they're out there. we'll see it today. good morning, happy friday. we made it to the weekends, now wasn't to switch our attention, already this morning, it is early, yes, but already we have few accidents outside, so i start with this one, very serious one, if you are anywhere around south philly take note of this, where we have serious accident of vehicle that went into a building, this is christopher columbus boulevard, both directions, all lanes are blocked at oregon avenue. so what you will want to do in and around this, stay on broad street, the schuylkill or 95,
4:33 am
that's going to be your best bet right now as they are work to go get this cleared out of the way, again, very serious accident here with a vehicle that went into a building, hearing reports that this could be a fatal accident. we also have an accident on the platt bridge, looks like this might have just went dark, mid-span, all lanes blocked between penrose and highland avenue, no one is getting on the bridge right now, make note that far for those of to you use the platt bridge, i'll let you know as soon as it clears, no one getting on it because of the accident. construction 95 north at girard, dealing with this yesterday, you have lost that right lane, not causing too many slow downs yet, we certainly know it will if it doesn't get moved out of our way, jim, back over to you. >> today is the day that philly honors the national champion villanova wildcats. >> we're just hours away from the parade of champions, through center city. as "eyewitness news" reporter pat gallen joins us live with the last minute preparations, pat, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jim, brooke, yes, here at the end of the parade route, outside of city hall at dilworth plaza, where everything is going to wrap up
4:34 am
little later on today as the team teamed up with the city to throw a big celebration for those villanova wildcats. certainly, they deserve t yesterday some preparation getting ready for. >> this you can see the barriers behind me, barriers up and down market street. these kids, as i said, de is dee it, wildcats will take over, just small piece every center city starting at 1:00. get to see ryan arcidiacono, chris jenkins, entire nova crew. so as we take a look at the parade route itself, it is not very long. it is not a large parade route, not talking philly's 2008 here. the fun begins at 20th and market street, and we'll move down to the west side of city hall where we are standing at dilworth plaza that means little foot traffic in the area as you might imagine, and it will cause some delays, as well, as you try to get in and out of town. i'm sure meisha will be keeping you a breast that far situation throughout the day. you know it gets little crazy down here, outside every city hall anyway, but with the
4:35 am
parade, give yourself little extra time trying to get out of the city if you work down here, i know some of the city employees are getting out as early as noon today. some other city employees we're told to stay little later in the day to avoid the traffic. so that of course is always fun. yesterday i got a chance to talk to ryan arcidiacono. he was getting a fresh haircut yesterday, and he was getting himself ready and prepared for this parade. we had nice little sit-down. few of the players were there, with ryan arcidiacono. you'll hear this entire interview coming up around 6:30 this morning, it feels like tonight out here, 6:30 today, he was awesome. he's just so cool, calm, collected, taking it all in, taking in the new found celebrity. you'll be hearing that come up around 6:30, liver outside of city hall, pat gallen for "eyewitness news", jim, brooke, back into you. >> i can't wait to hear that. >> looking forward it. >> we're kicking off our parade of champions coverage
