from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". the flyers and their fans are mourning the loss of long time owner ed snyder. the man who brought the nhl and stanley cup to

philadelphia. he's dead at 83. and as we go on the air this noon, our philly sport team are remembering the passing of a philadelphia legend. good afternoon, i'm brooke thomas. >> i'm jim donovan. ed snyder's death social security called tremendous loss for the philadelphia sport community, and the community at large. ukee washington remembers more than a sports owner, but a special man. >> too often words like visionary, and pioneer, are used to describe a person's effect on their community or the world around them. words like great, or revolution area, minimized by over use. when describing ed snyder and his affect on the city of philadelphia and well beyond, words like these don't even scratch the surface. ed snyder changed philadelphia and the lives of millions of people forever. a native of washington, d.c., snyder first came to philadelphia to be part owner of the eagles in 1964. that ghana over 50 year relationship with the city. often when snyder saw an

opportunity, a profitable business followed. in 1966, he established the flyers, as part of a nhl expansion. but they would need a place to play, so he created the spectrum. and had a hand in the first sports complex of its kinds in the world through the flyers, other businesses bloomed. in 1974 snyder founded spectacor, which would become a sports and entertainment power house that to do day operates internationally and in 48 state. spectacor would be the business face of many institutions today that are apart of our every day lives. snyder would have a hand in the creation of the first all sports radio station, wip, as well as one of the first regional cable networks, prism. but his first love was always the flyers. >> ladies and gentlemen the flyers are going to win the stanley cup. >> since the team's creation, there is nothing that snyder wouldn't do to make the team a contender, two stanley cups, eight conference championships, and 16 division

titles in the team's 49 seasons, they've only missed the playoffs 11 times. mostly due to snyder's determination to give philadelphia fans a winner. >> the flyers have won their second stanley cup. >> how much, snyder's love of giving back that would come to de fin him in later years. flyers charities over the years have raised more than $25 million, and contributed to organizations and causes in need. none was closer to his heart than the ed snyder youth hockey foundation, the foundation teaches more than 3,000 at-risk inner city children to play hockey, but also provides them with educational services, commitment to his community, committed to winning will always define this philadelphia icon. ed snyder, gone at the age of 83. >> the flyers are headed to the playoffs this season. they start thursday night. the team is dedicating the run to mr. snyder.

>> this is what he wanted. you know, he stuck with us through, you know, everything this year, and, you know, i'm extremely happy, that we got into the playoffs for him. >> you know, it is a sad day today. that could be very special and obviously we will be dedicated to mr. snyder. >> now the staff at our sister station 94wip has watched the flyers for decades. >> they too remember the man who brought the team and the nhl to philadelphia. >> this team was all about the culture, it was about the fans, all about the community, he did tremendous amount for me personally, and for a lot of the other players that i have played with, and really that went a long way in building what the flyers are today, and what the flyers have been through, through the last 50 years. >> ed snide is her one of the crown jewels of owners in the history of american sports. and he certainly has put a -- he certainly put a stamp on philadelphia, that indelible. >> ed snyder is one of the

greatest owners the city ever had. even though he didn't win for 41 years, he's as beloved today as he was at the first parade, and he's going to be remembered very fondly in this city. >> the snyder family put out a statement that reads in part: our dad was loved for his big heart, generosity of spirit, and dedication to his family. we are grateful for the outpouring of love from the community, his friends and all of those fortunate to have been touched by him in some way. large or small. end quote. >> eagles chairman and ceo jeffrey lurie has also released a statement. ed was a tremendous visionary, pioneer who did tremendous things for our city. that's one of the reasons i think he was so loved and respected by the fans of our city and by his players and staff. they new he cared as much as they did. >> and the sixers owner josh harris also issued a remembrance of mr. snyder. it says: ed continually

here is a list of the event it, starts at the opening day block party, the fun has already gun, outside the walls of cbp. the gates will open coming up 12:35, see batting practice on the field right after that. at 2:13 p.m., the phillies will line up on tenth street, then bring it into the park. will make their grand entrance for the 2016 season. harry kalas' son, kane, will sing the national and then, then of course fishes pitch coming your way at 3:05. what do we have to look forward to this season? for the 2016 philadelphia phillies? well, some young players, that includes herrera, mikhail franco, today's starting push err, aaron nola, we got a taste of last season, even more of a taste this season as he is the de factor ace with this philadelphia phillies team. these players are hoping to make it an enjoyable one. i caught up with cam on rough, phillies starting catch here talked about that topic and more. >> we're excited, you know, we have got a lot of young players, come out every day, and you're going to get 100%.

you know, a lot of energy, and we're having fun playing the game. you know, didn't start out the way we wanted to in cincinnati but we pulled it together in new york, hope to keep it going. >> cameron rupp talking about the start of the 2016 season for the phillies on the road, they dropped the first four games, but had a nice come back in the last two up at city field in new york against those mets, and we'll hope that they can bring some that far mojo here to citizens bank park today as they start it off at cbp with the padres, jim, brooke? >> thanks a lot, pat. the field is set. the players are warming up. how about the weather for the first pitch, at citizens bank park? let's get a first look at the forecast, with meteorologist, katie fehlinger, live on the cbs-3 skydeck. good afternoon. good morning, katie. >> brooke, definitely looking ahead here to pretty decent afternoon here in the delaware valley now that we have seen

our warmfront essentially lift north, you are still finding at least little hint of wet weather and activity on the radar. but at this point at least it is definitely becoming more removed from the delaware valley, or i should say at least from philadelphia, moving its way off to the north here the lil rounds of rain that continue to push through. but again, this is all part of a larger system, that is lifting through, warmfront now, and eventually we see the cold front move through tomorrow. so, it is getting better with time today. then eventually fresh round of rain on the way, which we will discuss as the show goes on. couple neighborhoods, low mid 50's, starting to see the clouds break for some sunshine, as that happens, that stronger april sun angle is going to help to moderate these temperatures up a little bit more readily. so, that said, the one thing i think you're really going to notice, a, some of the sun peaking through the clouds but b that is still kind of breezy. any time that breeze does blow, it does feel little chilly, to me, anyway. so i would highly suggest you break out the phillies

sweatshirts as you hit the ballpark here today, even the clouds breaking for sun, you are not going to need the wet weather gear. looking at 62 degrees, far more seasonable afternoon than recent days, feeling tad chilly specially in the con course where you don't have that bright sunshine on top of you t does feel tad cooler. and coming up, i did mention we are dealing with some rain down the road. we will track it for awe little later in the show. guys, we send it back into you. >> thanks so much, katie. well, there is much more ahead on "eyewitness news" at noon, the weekend death after cabrini college student sent under investigation. police hope to know more today pending the results from an autopsy. and, in the race for the white house, donald trump speaks out against the republican nomination process. and on the democratic side, bernie sanders is on a winning streak.

>> welcome back, cabrini college community mourning the death after student as investigators try to determine what happened to him. west conshohocken police say a 22 year old cabrini lacrosse player died sunday at home on the 200 block of more head avenue. investigators say he was visiting friends there saturday night. autopsy results are pending. preliminary findings suggest drugs may have been involved. police are not releasing the student's name until the family is notified. >> turning to campaign 2016, donald trump is criticizing the way the republican party chooses its mom nominee for president. bernie sanders picks up more delegates over the weekends to keep his winning strike alive.

sure. >> let's switch gears here, talk a little about the weather. at least looking brighter now. we do have more wet weather on the way before the week is said and done. big system, so sort of sitting between fronts right now, that's why at least things are starting to clear out for now. it is not going to stay that i way, eventually the cold front has to come through, bringing with it additional rain through our area, we will track everything for you, because there is a window of time, that definitely looks to be the wettest. so, let's get you out there. actually start things off by taking you out to side to citizens bank park, starting to see the clouds break for some sunshine, yes, good baseball weather, right? temperatures are still currently stuck in the 50's, but i promise you they will continue to rebounds now that the skies are clearing, april sunshine and the april sun angle is really going to help that along. let's talk some statistics, as well, we take you out to the month of april so far. only the 11th, guys, but we've already had a lot of extremes, april 1, we actually hit 80 degrees. we've already since that point dropped down to 29.

we've had .3 of an inch of snowfall, i mean, it's been crazy couple of weeks. that said, starting to get a little back toward average in the days ahead here. looking at storm scan, that first warmfront, lifting to the north, we look at wider zoom of everything, the whole system in its entirety, not the most organized frontal boundary but back here crossing through, before we're completely done with the system. so that is where the heavier rain comes into play, so today we had some showers early on, those are quieting down, more rain on the way for tomorrow, again, i'll get more detailed on tracking that, then high pressure regains control and here right through the rest of the week. let's walk you forward, taking it out to first pitch. about 3:00 or so, as the phillies home opener, it looks like any wet weather at this point should stay far enough north that we won't have to worry about it, just little breezy, here comes the cold front though. so early tomorrow morning we will be on the air on "eyewitness news" this morning tracking this. looks to be some pretty heavy rain, guys, so i would definitely say morning drive try to set that alarm little extra early, might need extra

ten minute or so to get where you are going, rain could come down herly even wrapping up the typical morning drive. after lunchtime, clearing out from west to east, so you still might have rain at the shore but completely clear skies into the lehigh valley region, for example. so it might be little bit after half and half forecast depending on location, but really the later or the closer you are to the shore, later all will be getting out of here which makes sensing moving from west to east. fifty-six the current temperature out in atlantic city, that southerly wind is noticeable, we are going to warm things up from here. now that we've got some of the sun peaking through, any showers are pretty much out of here tomorrow watch for the rain to be heaviest through the first half of the day. and then once high pressure gets here, it looks like it will get awfully comfortable, will hang out for couple of days, bring back sunshine, help temperatures to climb, only gets better from here, guys, just got to get through tomorrow. >> i was little worried about april so far. looking good. >> making good impression on you. >> no, no. >> we will be right
