only matched by his business proes and charitable efforts. >> reporter: too often word like visionary and pioneer are used to describe, a person's effect on their community or world around them. word like great, or revolutionary, minimized by over use. when describing ed snider and his affect on the city of philadelphia and well beyond word like these don't even scratch the surface. ed snider changed philadelphia and lives of millions of people, forever. a native of washington d.c., snider first came to philadelphia to be part owner of the eagles in 1964, that began an over 50 year relationship with the city. often when snider saw an opportunity, a profitable business followed. in 1966 he establish the flyers, as part of an nhl expansion, but they would need a place to play so he created the spectrum and had a hand in the first sports complex of its kind in the world. through the flyers, other businesses bloomed, in 1974, snider founded spectacor,

which would become a sports and entertainment powerhouse that to this day operates internationally, and in 48 states. spectacor would be the business face of many institutions, today that are a part of our every day lives. snider would have a hand in the creation of the first all sports radio station, wip, as well as one of the first regional cable networks, prism. but his first love was always the flyers. >> ladies and gentlemen, the flyers are going to win the stanley cup. >> since the team's creation there has been nothing that snider wouldn't do to make the team a contender. two stanley cups, eight conference championships and 16 division titles in the teams 48 seasons. they have only missed the playoffs 11 times mostly due to snider's determination to give philadelphia fans a winner. >> the flyers have won their second consecutive stanley cup. >> reporter: it was snider's love of giving back that would come to define him in later

years. flyers charities over the years have raised more than $25 million, and contributed to organizations, and causes in need. none was closer to his heart then ed snider youth hockey foundation. foundation teaches more than 3,000 the at risk inner city children to play hockey but also provides them with educational services. commitment, to his community, committed to winning, will always define this philadelphia icon. ed snider gone at the age of 83. mr. snider's impact on the philadelphia sports scene, is unmatched. >> sports director don bell joins with us more on the life and legacy of the flyers chairman. >> yeah, what a day, right. >> yeah. >> just something. the ed snider has a resume in philadelphia that spans five decade. it is impossible to run down risks of the the great things he has done but his peers who owned teams in the city fully recognize what has been lost.

>> when you you think of the philadelphia flyers and everything that we're about, every trait, we're passionate, we work hard, we're gritty, we're tough, we have a lot of will and you think of all have of those traits, that is what is ed snider. >> reporter: ed snide shore brought hockey to philadelphia 50 years ago died today after a long battle with cancer. other pro sports teams in town paid tribute to the trailblazer. eagles owner jeffery laurie said ed was a visionary and pie mere who did tree end us things for the city and sport of the hockey. what he is driven by winning and his passion for the sport, was genuine. sixers managing general partner josh harris said, ed continuingly poured his heart in making the difference in the lives of those around him and stopped at nothing to make city of philadelphia a better place for everyone, phillies charity man dave montgomery

question. tweet us using #cbs-3 good question. morning rain moved out and gave way to clear sunny skies but our weather department is tracking some additional showers for this evening. meteorologist justin drabick is in for kate bilo outside on the sky deck, j.d. >> real nice evening shaping up, lucked out for phillies home opener. picked a good day for. that temperatures surging in the 60's with some sunshine but we will be dealing with some showers north and west of the city throughout the evening hours. check it out on storm scan three. real light stuff. traveling up the extension over the next couple of hours you may run into light rain in northern bucks, montgomery and southernly high valley. that is bit. steadier rain arrives later through the overnight hours. look the a the temperatures in the sunshine, mid to upper 60's where we do have the cloud in the berks county, lehigh valley. we are stuck in the 50's. compared to this time yesterday, 12 to 18 or even 21 . that is a sign of the nice springtime air mass, moving back inside. little breezy today with that south wind, gusting still over 30 miles an hour, in dover, delaware and stays breezy

tonight. that keeps our temperatures on the warm side. through tonight a few scattered showers mainly north and west of the city, stays mild and breezy. we will talk about better chance for rain though tomorrow, that will impact one of the commutes. we will break it down in a few more minutes, back to you. >> justin, thank you. a robbery suspect shot this weekend by an off-duty philadelphia police officer has died from his injuries. we're now getting a closer look at this video which showed the moments after the suspect was shot. as our rahel solomon tells us the video has now gone viral. >> it is cell phone video now spread ago cross social media, and prompting criticism from some this video just one of the several circulating, capturing the moments after an off-duty police officer shoots a reported robbery suspect. >> i heard the guy hollering. i seen him look out window and he was trying to rob the old guy. >> reporter: it happened saturday afternoon around 2:30 near busy intersection of the broad and olney.

>> i seen him running out. he told him freeze i'm a policeman. he pointed the gun at the police officer but police officer shot twice, and the guy took off and ran around here. >> reporter: philadelphia police spokesmen lieutenant john stanford said he has seen the video but that the off-duty police officer witnessed the suspect attempting to rob victim and identified himself as police. >> again, he did what we told him to do in terms of the taking this job whether you are on duty or off-duty if you see a life is in danger, you act and that is what this officer did. >> reporter: for some that day explanation comes as little consolation. >> i just don't think he had to kill him because, you know, he is so young, still had a long life ahead. >> reporter: for those not there relying on video, philadelphia police warn it is not always a complete depiction. >> unless that video captures the incident in its entirety we will have whatever image is in front have of you. >> reporter: philadelphia police say their standard procedure the officer is on

west, bethlehem, live look from the hotel bethlehem, main street where we have cooler temperatures because they didn't get the sunshine. you guys are still dealing with the cloudy skies, with the chance for a couple of late rain showers this evening toward lehigh valley and into northampton county but best chance for rain will happen later on tonight mainly after midnight into tomorrow. and now so far for the month of april it has been on the cold side even though we did hit 80 degrees earlier in the month, so far averaging two and a half degrees below average. officially at the airport .3 of an inch of snowfall. we will average .5 inches of snow for the month of april. so, we're right there, and then again high temperatures 80 degrees. cold is 29. no below freezing temperatures coming at us any time soon across philadelphia, and even in some of the surrounding suburbs. all about the sunshine this time of the year. where we have sun from basically central bucks, montgomery county on southward that is where we have warm temperatures, stuck in the cloud, still north and west of berks county up through poconos and there is that

difference with the sky cover, 59 in reading, and allentown. sixty-seven right now in philadelphia at the airport. upper 60's in dover delaware. not a bad afternoon phillies game, perfect baseball conditions, and then it does get cooler though in the next couple days, another cool pocket of air. nothing like the weekend. that will track east behind this next cold front, still to the west, we have a mild night shaping up, maybe a couple light rain showers north and west this evening, the steadier rain holds off until after midnight into tomorrow morning. this evening we have spotty showers north and west, overnight that steady rain starts to move in. so tomorrow, watch out for generally just morning rain, and slow down morning commute, it is all because of the cold front that knocks temperatures back to the upper 50's tomorrow. still in the mid 50's on wednesday but we have mostly sunny skies and nice warming trend starts to develop on thursday. we're back in the 60's. the let's time it the out, travel plans this evening, most areas dry, cannot rule out that shower north and west. is there steady rain moving in at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.

start of the morning commute, it will be slow, really throughout the entire commute we will be dealing with those showers. by the afternoon we are back to some sunshine but just noticeably cooler. as far as how much rain we're talking about? it the looks like south jersey could dot best half an inch. less from the city north and west. overall not a big storm system coming through. temperatures tomorrow, again maybe up to 60 if we're lucky. cooler though on wednesday, upper 50's a few degrees below average. for tonight dry this evening, showers overnight, breezy, milder, lows in the lower 50's, tomorrow, morning rain and then afternoon clearing in the upper 50's. the here's the three day forecast. we have sunshine coming back tomorrow afternoon, it sticks around for a while. temperatures in the upper 50's next few days to the the lower 60's on thursday and guys, i got 70's coming up in the seven day forecast. >> hey now. >> yes. >> that is good. >> thanks, buddy, appreciate it. still ahead on "eyewitness news" fall out from bruce springsteen's canceled north carolina concert will other performers follow suit. plus wasting food?

new at 5:30, elevated levels of lead surfaced, in one elementary schools in mercer county, last week we told but elevated levels of lead in the elementary school in wynnewood. donovan looks at some things you can do to stop throwing away food and money. >> reporter: food scraps add up fast according to the the most recent estimates from the epa, americans waste 37 million tons of food and that is just for one year. money you spend on that food could be considered trash too, to help environment and your wallet, shop smart, before going to the grocery store check out what is in your refrigerator, cook or eat what you have, before you buy more, make a shopping list and plan menus. buying in bulk can help you save money but only if you use what you buy. before produce goes bad, freeze it, be mindful at restaurants. only order portions you can realistically eat and take home your left overs, you maximize your spending and cut down on waste. before you clean out your pantry thinking about donating untouched non-perishable food that can help a food pant try keep it shelves stocked. instead of tossing food in the trash bin start a compost pile
