people are told they have syphilis when they really do not and they are subjected to unnecessary potentially harmful treatments. >> it happened to one philadelphia woman who says that missed diagnosis ruined her life. health reporter stephanie stahl is here now with the shocking story. >> reporter: it is, guys. the philadelphia region has extremely high rates of sexually transmitted diseases, mainly among people with multiple partners. doctors say testing and treatment is critical but test results aren't always accurate. talk about scary? watch what can happen. when he had that was three months pregnant a routine test showed she had a sexually transmitted disease, syphilis but she had been in a long term relationship with michael, the father of her other children. >> i was in shock. i was in shock. i didn't know what to think. >> reporter: michael's syphilis test was negative. the relationship fell apart, edna was an emotional wreck. >> in my hearty knew i didn't do anything wrong. >> reporter: drexel clinic treated edna with penicillin.
