hundreds gathered that pay tribute to a popular school superintendent killed while on his morning run. how students and parents are remembering the beloved leader. and victory on home turf. a huge night in new york for presidential frontrunner donald trump and hillary clinton. what they're saying about their primary wins plus the candidates who stopped by philadelphia tonight. and temperatures dropping a bit tonight. but another dry day tomorrow. rain however does return to the forecast. i'll tell you which day you need to grab that umbrella. >> we begin this evening with the sudden loss of a new jersey school superintendent. good evening everyone, omega's dean. >> i'm ukee washington. robbinsville superintendent steven mayer was running this morning when police say a 17-year-old driver struck and killed him. "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos was at a vigil tonight where hundreds gathered to pay their respects. i'm not going lie. i don't have the words tonight that can make the pain go away. >> reporter: but this robbin

robbinsville, new jersey, community sure has the connection to get through this most difficult time. >> i know that he's looking down right now and he's smiling. he knows that robbinsville is strong. >> reporter: hundreds from all corners of this town gathering at the fox moore pavilion to remember robbinsville superintendent dr. steve mayer. >> hit and kill this morning as he jogged before work. the driver a student at robs binsville high school. >> accident remains under investigation. no summonses have been issue at this time. no criminal charges have been file at this time. >> be with one another. talk with one another. keep the familiar unless your prayers. >> reporter: through tears, hugs and reflection -- >> we just ask lord that you bless this community, that you will draw us closer together. >> robbinsville began the healing process with vigil. >> just his presence about being around everyone, how he's always like happy and towards everyone. he was just always positive.

>> reporter: even though the vigil officially now over you can still see hundreds and hundreds of people gathered here really a testament to the impact superintendent steve mayer had on his community. >> it's just amazing that not just in the school. it's just so many people around the community that possibly didn't even know him but are still affected. >> reporter: in robs bin binsville, greg argos, cbs3 "eyewitness news". as we continue tonight and developing right now major traffic backups headed to delaware. chopper thirty four the delaware memorial bridge tonight where emergency cable work is underway. three of the four lanes heading into delaware are closed. the work is expected to last for a few days so keep that in mind, please as you head out the door tomorrow morning. you can get the very latest traffic updates tomorrow morning on "eyewitness news" starting at 4:30am. turning now to a big night in campaign 2016. the vote count is underway in the new york primary. and it's one of the biggest delegate prices up for grabs in the race for president. on the republican side donald

trump won his home state tonig tonight. the frontrunner has 60% of the vote well ahead of john kasich and tow cruz. on the democratic side hillary clinton also won her home state with 58% of the vote. bernie sanders a distant second. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is live in election central tonight with more on the battle for delegates. david? >> reporter: jess carbs it's interesting because normally this time of year we don't expect states like new york and pennsylvania to be in play like they are this election season. but not many people expected to have five candidates in the race on april 19th. all candidates insist they're going to their party's conventions this summer. >> new yorkers, you've always -- you've always had my back. (applause). as predicted in the polls senator hillary clinton claimed victory in the state. in philadelphia, a crowd showed up for a hillary clinton watch

party. she cheering on the democratic frontrunner her rival bernie sanders moved past new york and spent most of the evening in front of a large crowd at penn state university where he took a dig at clinton. >> i am keeping my my cell phone on because i am waiting for that call from jp morgan chase or goldman sachs saying bernie, we want to you give a speech to wall street. >> reporter: donald trump started the day voting for himself on his home turf in manhattan. by nightfall he greeted supporters with excitement. at trump tower. >> we don't have much of a race any more based on what i'm seeing on television. senator cruz is just about mathematically eliminated. >> reporter: trump has to win several other states to secure the tom nation. kasich and cruz say they're in it until the republican convention in cleveland later this summer. cruz was in philadelphia at the national constitution center tonight where he took his focus

national convention will be in philadelphia. but before that there there will be special visitors. 57 large fiber glass donkeys will be placed around the city by the democratic national committee to welcome convention goers. each will be painted to represent the 50 states, 5us tea territories, washington, d.c. and democrats abroad. after the convention each delegation will be given the chance to take their donkey ho home. house speaker paul ryan urged republicans to tandy their party's convention in mid july and to stand united behind whomever delegates choose as their presidential nominee and tonight on the late show with steven colbert ryan is asked again about his political future. >> yes or no, would you accept the nomination? >> no, steven i've said i do not want, nor would i accept the republican nomination. >> got it. >> so you're considering the nomination? >> you can watch the entire interview tonight on the late show with steven colbert coming up at 11:35 right after "eyewitness news" at 11:00. flyers fans buy behaving

bald and it's getting national attention and stealing another blow to the reputation of philly sports fans. it was a disappointing loft last night and the fans let it show. some of the crowd through their wrist bands which were distributed to help memorialize the pass of of owner ed snider on to the ice. trash cans and shovels were used to clear the mess and things got so bad the flyers were assessed two minute bench penalty for delay of game despite the announcer warning fans. >> unfortunately a couple of individuals misbehaved and did -- through the bands on the ice which is something we can't tolerate or accept. >> the flyers dedicated their post season run to snider who died last week after a two year battle with cancer. we'll be hearing from the players about the controversy that's coming up just a little later in sports. philadelphia is the place to be for first time home buyers according to well-known website. >> philly is in the coveted number two spot on realtor.com list of top cities to purchase a starter home.

>> stressful getting through security stressful. >> longer weights. i always feel like rushing in if you thought getting through airport security was bad it's gotten worse with airports nationwide seeing security lines double in size. >> we've been working with the tsa airlines here at philadelphia international airport to troy to arrive at a solution. >> mary flannery is the public affairs manager at philadelphia international airport. she now recommends passengers arrive two hours before domestic flights. three for international. so war the busiest times at the airport? >> i think monday mornings and midday or like, um, late morning. >> probably rush hour in the evening. >> fridays at 6:33. >> wow very specific. >> early morning. 4:30 in the morning until 8:00 a.m. is the very busy bank of flights. >> then in the late afternoon into the early evening is another big bank of flights. >> guess i was wrong. >> i stand corrected, guys. >> american airlines says just one week last month nearly skate hundred passengers missed their

center. vittoria woodill shows you how this piece of art comes alive. >> well tum to the kimmel. here's the big tree. >> philadelphia international festival of the arts continues with the connected tree inside the kimmel center. >> we thought bout things that humans built through the centuries. we build pyramids, sky scrapers. we made an iphone. but we can't really make a tree. >> artistic director jay wall tells it's an installation designed by 2015 mimi liam two by fours have been constructioned into roots to hold on to to, play in, to sit in and look up at 22 barges. move and grow in grand you're. >> branches are held on weights and pull piece like sailors hell together to hoist the sales and -- >> you want to see how the barges move. >> yes. >> slowly pull it. that green line you're coming to right here you can see that one

the birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming and the weather is beautiful. and the good news it's going continue over the next couple of days at least although we are tracking a little bit of rain returning to the forecast after a pretty long hiatus here. let's take a look at a time lapped video to start you off. start off at bishop eustace in pennsauken. 57 degrees there right now. but you can see how the day started out with sunshine watch what happens right about now. midday, clouds start to roll in. then they clear out end the sun returns in the afternoon those clouds moving in that was the result of this back door cold front we've been talking about that since last week. it did knock down the temperatures a little bit this afternoon and this evening and kicked up that strong gusty wind. turn out to be beautiful day despite the increase in wind despite the increase in cloud cover this afternoon. and storm scan3 shows that all those clouds drifted off to the south and skies are clear for now. as we widen out you can see scattered showers and even a line of thunderstorms moving through portions of the kansas and oklahoma. that is going to continue moving eastward. as we go through the end of the week and that's what will bring us the threat for showers and

storms on friday. but in the meantime, we've got a couple more nice spring days to look forward to. right now 59 in philadelphia. pretty mild out there still. 55 in reading. 53 in allentown. little bit colder mount pocono at 44 and chilly in wild add at 46 right now. you can see the colder air off to the north. nice and warm down to the south richmond at 67. so it was just the influx of those north winds that dropped the temperature just a bit this afternoon and it will be cool again tomorrow but it's been dry for about week now. april so far we've had 1.36-inches of rain since the start of march march 1st the start of meteorological spring we've had 3.37-inches. that's almost two and three quarters inches below average and the dry stretch continues tomorrow sunny and breezy with highs in the 60s. a perfect spring day. thursday clouds increase in the afternoon but it's still nice. then friday, clouds, an few more showers here's wait looks like as that system pushes in from the west. again you can see clouds increasing thursday afternoon. but the rain should hold off

until friday afternoon. scattered showers and thunderstorms threw p.m. right through the friday evening commute and then we clear it out fort weekend. one thing to mention though allergy sufferers you'll be suffering through the rest of the week pollen levels in the medium high to high range right through friday. overnight it's chilly. cooler than recent nights down to 48 degrees. so you'll want the light jacket or sweatshirt tomorrow morning. tomorrow is beautiful in the afternoon. mostly sunny 68 degrees. so not as warm as today or yesterday. we actually hit 78:11 o'clock this morning before the cooler winds in. tomorrow is seasonal. thursday looks great. showers and a thunderstorm friday but then the good news, the weekend clears out again near 70 both days. sunshine both days and another perfect spring weekend. >> loving it. thanks kate. >> lesley what's coming up next in sports. >> the flyers with big game tomorrow on the bring of elimination. they're going to have to change things if they hope to avoid a sweep. plus after 16 strike outs last week the crowd expecting big things from phillies pitcher
