well, it is a big excitement in center city this morning. the broad street run is getting underway right new. lets get right out to the starting line at broad and west fischer where cherri gregg from our sister station kyw news radio is standing by. cherri, good morning. it is go time for these runners. >> oy, yes, good morning, rahel. i'm here at the starting line with lots of anticipation. folks have been lined up, they are ready and waiting to go. at any moment now the broad street run will be beginning. the runners will, start to pound the pavement for 10 miles. start and beginning here the at broad and fischer a and they will run all the way down broad street, to the navy yard. just a couple moments ago wheelchair participants just rolled over the start line and now you can see, thousands a and thousands, 40 plus thousand runners to be exact, they will be beginning in waves as soon as a you hear that starting pistol go off. folks are standing there,

jumping around trying to stay warm. many people have shed the out are garments which was keeping them dry. that was the big issue how to stay dry before the race. so they have, punchos, some people wore trash bags, putting tape on their sneakers trying to make sure that their feet do not get wet in all of this rain. now, it is all going to start. they have taken off those clothes. a lot of them have water repellants hats on because key is not to get over heated as you run those 10 miles. again, they will be running all the way down broad street 10 miles to the navy yard, lots of detours, along the race route, and the race will begin any minute now, 10,000 runners, they all have race bins with a -- race bibs with the special chip to allow them to determine their time during this race. now all of them have their bibs on. people have thrown their clothes to the side. as you can see they are jumping around in

anticipation. we have had cheers earlier. lots of different teams. people running in groups. and they are all looking to run at different paces. i have been told by race organizers that it can take up to an hour to get all 40 plus thousand runners over the starting line. because they are going to be running in waves. yes. so this is all going to be happening any moment now. they are going to be racing, through the starting line. i hear some folks talking. you can see the officials chattering over there. but we can the not -- we can't tell exactly when that start, start of the race will happen. but people are anticipating, as you can see, they are rubbing their hand together, folks on the motorcycles are ready, the truck is geared up. the truck has the clock on it and it runs in front of the folks, that they race down

broad street and all this can be happening any moment now. we will bring it to you live, as soon as they begin to, as they hit the pistol. live from the starting line, cherri gregg for cyw news radio for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> do we know it will be happening in waves. do we know, you know what sort of time we will see between first wave and second wave, how long will that take normally. >> reporter: it could take up to an hour. we have been told it could take up to an hour to get the first wave through. the second wave, third wave, all up to 40,000 people that will be participating in this race. >> cherri -- >> the folks are still just standing there. >> cherri, we know at boston marathon you have to place to be able to run the race, is

that something similar in the blue cross broad street run or is this just something you have to register and you can parities pate. >> reporter: you do to have register. the thing is they had more than 50,000 people try to get participate in this race but, of course, the race has a cut off at 40,000. but you know, because of the rainy was told by race organizers that 4,000 people did not show up to pick up their bibs. so i'm sure there is a lot of people who didn't make it through, that they will be upset that they didn't get a chance to race and run this broad street run. it is one of the most popular races in the the city in large part because you don't have to be an experienced runner to participate. you can train in just a few weeks or most people do that and then they participate and they just, they just, it is a big community thing. one of the things i want to mention is over the past several years, over three million-dollar has been raised

for cancer, the american cancer society has a thousand runners. oh, there it is, there they go, it kicked off, as you you can see, they are running, going, go ahead. the fastest follow accounts are in the front. the these are people that have done it year after year. after you run broad street run about ten years in a row you automatically get in and all of those are running, they are not, they are, hello, they are waving the at camera. their spirits are not dampen at all by this rain. you can see people wearing shower caps, just trying to keep their head warm, they are wearing punchos, they are running, some people have tape on their shoes, they are wearing waterproof hats, how are you doing, good morning, good morning, good morning. that is first wave of runners and new we will see another wave, and this will continue, on for the next, i guess, almost an hour, i have been told by race organizers that

though. >> i didn't say it, you said it. >> lets talk about the forecast. rainy morning for sure, the showers kind of break up a little bit. it gets better but we will be under the gun for wet weather through tonight. it is chilly, check it out, temperature 47 degrees at the airport. east winds at 7 miles an hour. that justin to bring in cooler air. you you can see a lot of moisture out there on storm scan three again, next two or three hours is steady yes, sir rain and we will see pockets of rain at times throughout the afternoon and then tapers off to scattered showers later tonight. rain at times, steady yes, sir this morning, half inch to maybe three-quarters of an inch of rain before this system is out of here late are tonight. that is good news. we do need the rain. mid 40's in allentown at this hour. thirty-nine in mount pocono. near 50 in parts of the south jersey, ease wind 10 miles an hour or less, continues, with that cool flow, that ocean water only in the low 50's. temperatures will struggle to

make it back to the upper 50's today for philadelphia and shore points and in the poconos, you guys will be stuck in the 40's, with periods of rain at times. good news is we do have some milder temperatures, trying to return tomorrow but still the overall pattern stays unsettled for tomorrow, we will talk about several rain chances, we will break it down in a few more minutes, rahel, back to you. >> a lot of people will appreciate those mild temperatures. >> i think so. >> something to look forward to. >> justin, thank you. an suv slams in the building in north philadelphia, the suv hit a parked car and then ran straight into a garage at fifth and venango. it happened around 6:00 this morning. first responders on the scene tells us in one was injured. licenses and inspections are on the scene checking the stability of the building, no details if the slick road played a role in the crash. police are investigating an armed robbery at a 7-eleven in mayfair. it happened in the 3300 block of tyson avenue around 2:00 this morning. the investigators tell us that the armed robber was wearing a

t the shirt over his face when he tea manned cash from the clerk. the robber did getaway with hundreds of dollars in cash but thankfully no one was hurt. a police car chase end in a chain reaction crash in point breeze, it happened at 16th and dickinson, investigators tell us that officers were chasing an suv when it hit a chevy malibu traveling on dickinson street the causing the sedan to hit another car. two people jumped out and tried to run. officers caught one man and they are looking for another. five cars in total were damaged in the crash. police are investigating a body found in the parking lot of the target store in king of prussia. "eyewitness news" outside the store in the dekalb pike where the body was found inside of a car. upper merion police say they are handling the case, but do not the belief that the death is suspicious at this time. funeral services will be held today for amy joyner francis a at the st. paul uame church in wilmington. police say the sophomore died

philadelphia. a lot of moisture to get through our region and still under the gun the next several hours for steady rain, it is not real heavy, heavier rain is well to the south and west over southern west virginia and that probably misses us but notice a little bit of the break in the action in western pennsylvania. that should be here by the afternoon. still not totally drying out but we will have periods of rain at times for second half of the day. april ended up cool or all cool, but still above average with half degrees when you average temperature up. rainfall almost 2 inches below average. high temperature was 86 degrees. that happened last tuesday. coldest temperature was 29. we did pick up half inch of snow earlier in the month. why has it been so cool lately? well, we have overcast skies, that is trend for last several days, we do not have the strong mid-spring sunshine. then we have a wind flow right off the ocean, easterly wind as high pressure remains park well to the north and get that flow around the high. ocean is at 51 degrees.

that puts air temperatures down. discovered the front hang ago cross the carolinas, as we go south of the front we are in the 60's but eventually it does move northward tomorrow and brings in the brief push of milder air but still plenty of rain in the forecast. today will be worse of the rain, 100 percent chance. we will see most have the rain today. to still tomorrow can't rule out 40 percent chance of the few showers early in the morning and in the afternoon as cold front moves through, we will to have watch, tuesday, still dealing with more showers, wednesday looks better, wednesday is probably the best day of the upcoming week. storm itself is well to the west over ohio valley. warm front pushes through tomorrow. still chance for a few showers as actual cold front passes by monday afternoon, and then the front may get hung up a little bit off shore. some rain could creep back northward and stick around our region on tuesday. so by noon time, we are still dealing steady rain for much of the delaware valley and then later this afternoon that

everyone as well. what you're looking at now in the traffic story is broad street run that has kick off at broad street officially shut down from here spring garden street in philadelphia, broad and spring garden but it is shut down in north philadelphia between olney avenue an all the way to the naval yard in south philadelphia. 10-mile stretch there for the run today. now broad street is shut down but this is also affecting vine street expressway. we will go to that next. vine street expressway at broad street, broad street exit is officially closed. you have to exit at eighth street. traveling on vine street expressway. also we will move traffic cam here to 76 westbound at broad and again, off ramp to broad street are closed here and one more time we will move traffic cam to i-95 southbound at broad street and northbound, off ramps are closed for broad street run. drive very carefully, rain in the area slippery roadways, that is latest from the cbs-3

still the steady rain, right on top of us, a few more hours to go as we hit the afternoon that should begin to break up. so it is more pockets of rain at times. so through the day, period of rain with the steady yes, sir happening over the next few hours. overall amounts, before the storms system out of here later tonight, half inch, maybe three-quarters of an inch in some locations. this would be most rain we have had since middle of march, so we do need this rain. forty-five in allentown. forty-seven in airport. fifty in wildwood. breaking down your morning, steady rain, temperatures in the 40's to 50's this afternoon. period of rain at times. we will get some breaks. those temperatures do climb slowly through the 50's. getting up to 58 for philadelphia similar numbers along the shore, only in the 40's in the poconos. there are chances to hit 70 this week but as i said we are talking about more rain so you need that umbrella time it out in the full forecast in a few minutes, rahel, back to you.

thousands on their way down broad street right now for 37th annual broad street run, philadelphia tradition, of course, the 10-mile journey kick off half an hour ago in less than ideal weather conditions. lets get outside to olney where cherri gregg from our sister station kyw news radio has been all morning. cherri, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rahel. forty plus thousand runners, all coming through this starting line here at broad and fischer. as you can see there is a lot of excitement, despite this rain, people are wearing trash bags, they are wearing punch os, wearing waterproof jackets, waterproof hats, there is tape on shoes, bags around shoes trying to keep their feet warm, and dry as they take all of these 10 miles down broad street. hello, lots of smiles, lots of

cheering. all at the race began less than 30 minutes ago. the it began with the wheelchair participants and then wave after wave after wave after wave of runners. so the big challenge, of course. all right, we love you back. the big challenge, of course, has been trying to stay dry, before the race. now the challenge is to make sure they don't over heat using some of the layers and the trash bags and the punchos that they are using to stay dry. but the weather itself, the temperature out here is perfect for running. this is such a community event. there are people wearing costumes and doing all sorts of things to keep their spirits high for this race day. this is first time in recent memory that it poured on this way. i remember being here last year the weather was great. we have a lot of people from our station including walt hunter, kyw christian johann

farm in the warehouse. >> yeah, it is a cool thing. think about how many empty warehouses there are in the philadelphia region that could be creating jobs, creating, food for our local population. >> reporter: city council recognitioned metropolis with resolution toss make the city international hub for vertical farming. >> establish the city of philadelphia has one of the world's prominent training centers for this type of farming. >> we do not have weather. when it snowed this april, we were growing inside. we were growing food in january. >> reporter: here's how year round inside farm works. is there artificial light and plants are grown in a nutrient rich water that is constantly recycled. >> it is pretty much the same thing you get in soil. same nutrients that you would get otherwise. it gets in the much cleaner fashion. >> we are vegan certified which means we have no pesticides and i mean zero, not any, no herbicides, and no manure being the number one cause of food poisoning. >> reporter: they can grow lettuce, basil, peppers and

philadelphia but getting there. .2 in gilbertsville and perkasie tenth of an inch so far. we will be dealing with the most rain we have had since early march. that is impacting run tours day on the broad street run. lets look live from chopper three check it the out, i don't think rain will impact this race too much. the these are some hard core people out there. they are enjoying ideal running temperatures. in the the 40's to around 50 degrees. i mean this race started at 8:00. the course record is just over 45 minutes. so you could have a winner, i don't know if that has happened yet but 10 miles, 45 minutes, i certainly could in the do that. as far as rain goes, under the gun the entire event, is still going to be dealing with steady rain. this extend back toward harrisburg and lancaster. a few more hours to go yet and then we may get the a few breaks this afternoon but still period of rain at times later this afternoon, even still some showers around tonight. so it is a slow moving storm system that will bring rain to the region.

69 degrees is where we should be this time of the year for daytime highs. today well below that tomorrow, and we are going to make a run at 70's if we see sun, however, still threat for a few showers, rain chances, continuing on tuesday, and wednesday we're back up to mid 70's. that is the best day of the week with more sunshine, and as we should keep things nice and dry. good news for allergy sufferers with the the rain helps cleanse out atmosphere so we are dealing with le pollen counts today, they to creep backup to the medium high range tomorrow and pretty much stay at medium levels through the rest of the week with threat of rain. the rape comes through this morning. gets bet they are afternoon but still unsettled. tomorrow we will have the coal front coming through and still chance for a few showers not everybody sees it. even tuesday as this front hangs up to to the south this rain could creep further northward. we will keep a watch on that for a few you days of rape. today though morning is steady yes, sir rain. still a few pockets of the rain at times later this

the 37th annual broad street run is underway, right now, first the runners started about 50 minutes ago and they are now just about done, fastest runners normally complete the 10-mile course in less than an hour, this is a live look from chopper three as runners make their way down broad street in this chilly wet weather. we feel for them. every year people come near and far to compete in this philadelphia tradition. and right now lets take a live look at the middle of the course at broad and spring garden, steady stream of runners coming through this intersection and we will have complete coverage of the race coming up on "eyewitness news" later tonight. justin you know those runners are tough but you have to feel for them, chilly wet not ideal. >> it takes an hour to get everybody through the starting line new just waiting back there in the rain and then people were finishing before you even start in the front of the pack. >> yes. totally more than we can do.
